  • In this tutorial, I will address the following printer errors you might be receiving on your Windows computer: "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running." or "The Dependency Service or Group Failed To Start". There are two methods explored in this tutorial, and the 2nd one applies only to users of 32-bit versions of Windows.
Some users may get a “print spooler service” error when you trying to install a printer in Windows that says:
Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running.
To solve this error, try the following steps.
Press “Window key” + “R” to open the Run dialog
    Type “services.msc“, then select “OK“.
Double-click the “Printer Spooler” service, and then change the startup type to “Automatic“. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer. Select “OK“.
Restart the computer and try to install the printer again.
If the Print Spooler service keeps stopping after your restart it, the problem is most likely related to corrupted printer drivers that are installed on the computer. Try uninstalling all printers and printer software from the computer and start from scratch. This may include PDF writer or faxing software as well. Anything listed in the Control Panel under Printers & Faxes I would do away with. If there is any software installed for other printers in Add/Remove Programs I would uninstall it all. Obtain updated software from your printer manufacturers and reinstall only the items you need.
Are you seeing an error similar to this: "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running." or maybe "Windows could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer." Is your list of printers gone or you get an error when trying to add a new one? Here are a few solutions that have worked for us!
    Solution 1:
    PRINT SPOOLER BASICS
    1. Start - Run - services.msc
    2. Find Print Spooler and make sure it's set to start Automatically and try to Start it.
    3. Check the Dependencies tab.
    Solution 2:
    LEXMARK SERVICE
    1. In the Services list (see above), see if you have "LexBce Server."
    2. If you do, set it to start Automatically and press Start.
    Solution 3:
    EDITING THE REGISTRY
    1. Start - Run - regedit
    2. Located the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler
    3. On the right side, double-click on DependOnService. It should have only RPCSS and HTTP. Remove anything else, including LEXBCES.
    3. Click OK and then exit the Registry Editor.
    4. Restart your computer.
    Solution 4:
    DEP SETTINGS FOR SPOOLER
    1. Start - right-click on Computer and go to Properties.
    2. Click on "Advanced" (it's "Advanced System Settings" on the left list of newer computers).
    3. Click on the first Settings (under Performance).
    4. Click on the Data Execution Prevention tab.
    5. Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select."
    6. Click on the Add button and choose spoolsv.
    7. Click Open and then click OK when you get the warning.
    8. Click OK and restart your computer.
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education).
