yeah, the post hw and post sb quests aren't AS much of a slog though as post arr since they're only 40ish quests as opposed to the 80ish of arr, or 100 quests back when I went through it in 5.2

    • @Xahaka1986

No worries, it happens ^^ You should also look into wonderous tails that you can unlock when you get to 60. Its a weekly that is also a good way to get some experience along with some other bonus stuff. If you play your cards right, someone can be halfway to level 81 in less than a minute after they log in when endwalker is out. Turning it in gives you exactly half a level for your current job. If you get lucky with it you could also get a mount that is worth around 10 million gil last I checked, may be a little cheaper nowadays. Just something you can hopefully not miss by the time you can use it :p

An important couple of things to note: ARR had a long period of patches before 3.0 released. The patches were also more heavily story focused than other expansions. This is the reason for as many quests as it has before heavenward. The other important thing is on the exp. In their original release, these quests didn't give any exp. It wasn't until storm blood that they went back and gave a small exp bonus to them. It was at the same time that they gave the 50/60 dungeons an exp reward from the mob kills. They kept this reward small in order to prevent severely overleveling the upcoming expansion by going through that mandatory story.

A lesser known EXP tip: Level sync will apply EXP bonuses from rings, earrings etc. So if, for example, your job is level 55 but you're in a level 25 dungeon, you can put on the brand-new ring and get 30% more EXP because you're "technically" below level 30.

5:35 Actually...no, it's not any different with any of the expansions. As soon as you hit what is the cap of that expansion, you get about 10% of the experience you had been getting before until you get to the next expansion. There is also a good reason for it, it keeps you from being +5-10 levels into the next expansion before you even get to it. And its not like you need that experience since the game is good about keeping you up with the msq better than it use to be.

Once you were 50 when ARR originally came out, there were no exp gains since you were max level. After the first expansion was released they introduced exp rewards for 2.x quests since the cap was raised to 60 and like Xylira said was kept minimal so you didn't get your character to say lvl 55+ by the beginning of HW. With daily roulettes however, you can easily get past that by the time you step into Ishgard.

    • @Gurnicus

Just a tip for new player or not so new players as well:
If you get a message saying: "You feel the presence of a powerful mark" this means there is an S rank mark in the area that someone spawned. These are incredibly difficult to spawn and people will wait until everyone who wishes to participate in killing it is there. They are usually max lvl creatures (for their respective expansion) marked with an orange mark. However for characters who are lvl 60+ soloing the ARR Version of such is incredibly easy and you may unknowingly kill one, thus pissing off the whole hunts community. Which is pretty much everyone who reached end game and is not a raid only player lol. So keep that in mind :P!

Many of them are really good VAs, it's just unfortunately like he said in the video, that there was either bad direction or a near complete lack of it. It doesn't matter how good you are at your job if you don't actually know what the boss wants done, and even worse when everyone else is in the same boat. Or more accurately for the discussion at hand: everyone else was in their own separate boat going their own ways.
That's actually sort of the same problem they had with 1.0 - no one knew what everyone else was doing, so they ended up making all these individual parts of a game that didn't really fit together well when all was said and done.

    • @rptrrwr

The directing I think wasn't really there. Keep in mind that as 2.0 released, they had very little budget as SE wasn't expecting it to do as well as it has. As soon as the decision was made to continue the story with HW, that's when you start to see things like the voice acting improving.

The thing about the patch content being a filter is really just leftover wounds from old players. That was by far the worst content in the game. Everyone who has played will agree. There were large swaths of game and quests that made the crystal hunt before Garuda look like a John Wick action flick.
In fact, this was so bad that Square eventually just cut all of that from the game. They removed hours of meaningless quests and filler and running around, because it added literally nothing to the game except to pad its length. Since it has been removed, us veterans need to stop talking about how bad the patch stuff is now, because it just isn't that bad anymore.

I'm genuinely curious which main story quests you think are worse than the Garuda crystals because for 8 years that has been literally my single most despised part of the entire story so far. Other bits might be tedious, but at least they had some sort of minor character moments or lore substance. This was literally just "lol, wrong crystal, you're wasting your time with irrelevant NPCs". Even the minor aetherology lore is stuff we've seen elsewhere in the game. I was astounded it got left in in its entirety after they trimmed things down instead of just slashing everything except the siren fight.

    • @azureskeith8643
      @azureskeith8643 2 роки тому

@@cariandi They only changed the patch content, everything in the actual game is left as is for pacing and XP gain reasons. Those crystal quests were terrible, I remember in particular the npc you got the quests from knew exactly what you needed but went out of their way to not actually tell us the crystal to get or where to get it until like 3 quests in. But all things considered that was short. The stuff with the patch quests just kept going. It never stopped, and you get no xp from it. Which is a minor thing all told, but at least knowing you are making progress towards max level helps to make it feel like you are doing something. I started skimming and outright skipping dialogue until something interesting started to happen and it still took me hours to get through. So it's just the fact it took so much longer than the crystals for me.

yes, the post-expansion patch content doesn't give much xp, because at that point you are supposedly "max level" for that expansion, and they don't want to over-level you beyond it. that's because the next expansion's x.0 content continues from there. makes it more consistent for ppl who play only one job. as for leveling alt-jobs, post-expansion MSQ wouldn't be good, because the minimum required level is supposedly your main job's max level at that point. so it makes perfect sense to "stall" your xp gain in MSQ.

If you're on a preferred server with ''Road to 70'' do not ever worry about XP, you will easily be 60 before you even finish 2.0. My alt character is right now at the very first quest of HW and has at least 3 jobs sitting at or above 60.. without me having even tried to make that happen. This has advantages and disadvantages, as often you'll level so fast that you're consistently fifteen or so levels above your MSQ progression.

What I find that many sprouts don't know about is that their chocobo companion has special skills you can assign to them each level they gain. They can start out being Healer, Defender, Attacker and eventually do all three. You can choose which abilities you want them to start out with. There is also special foods other than the standard Krakka root. Curiel roots give them an experience bonus for example, another gives them a healing boost etc...These foods can be bought of the mb or if you have access to garden plot they can be grown. They also have certain commands too that are useful. Such as away, follow, withdraw and more.. Chocobo's level cap is 20 and they are useful when you are fighting in the world solo

Another thing new sprouts should know and start early as it takes time. Build up your grand company squadron. You need to get yourself promoted up to a certain rank to start but it doesn't take long if you farm a bit of the grand company hunt log. You can use the squadron to help you solo ARR dungeons, which helps for future alt jobs.

Couple notes about the exp bonus. There is also an earing you can earn from a level 80 area that does more or less the samething as the endwalker pre-order. Any of these bonus keep getting applied even if you are sync-ed below the effect. So if you are level 60 and get sync-ed to level 24, the hall of novice ring will still give you its exp bonus if you put it on.

Zepla has a good video on which unlock (blue) quests are important to do while leveling; check it out. A couple other things I wish I'd known sooner:
First, don't just get your retainers, start leveling them early. Like the battle chicken, it takes awhile. If you craft, you can send them on ventures to fetch mats for you. Even if you don't craft, you can send them on ventures to fetch random things, some of which you can sell for good gil on the market board. It might feel hard to get enough ventures for this initially, but you'll be able to buy them with Grand Company seals eventually.
Second, rank up with your Grand Company. You can use GC seals to buy handy things like glamour prisms and venture coins. You can hand in unwanted gear for seals. You eventually get a "squadron" of NPCs with which you can solo run some of the ARR dungeons, which is nice if you're leveling a DPS alt job and don't like the queue times. However, just like retainers, you have to level these guys, and it's slow, so start early.
Third, the crafting is amazing, but I wouldn't rush into it. It's a big inventory and time sink, and can be a huge gil sink. Also, it's faster and easier (IMO) once you open a special crafting area part way through the Heavenward expansion. It's really fun, though, so do check it out eventually.

Retainer ventures are a HUGE asset to crafters. Training one in any combat class allows them to hunt monster parts far more efficiently than you can, especially parts with low drop rates (*cough, Night Milk, cough*). They can also be trained as gatherers, and a fisherman retainer can use a venture to gather specific fish, rather than sifting through an ocean of trash for a half-dozen edible sardines.
If you are interested in crafting, you can try them easily at level 10. You can buy all the mats you need from vendors for the first 15-19 levels of recipes, after which you will need to farm them or buy them off the market board. Some crafting/gathering traits are universal, like Quick Synthesis; as long as one class is a high enough level to unlock the trait, all the other crafting classes can use those traits from level 1.
For gatherers, some abilities can be shared between classes. For example, at level 50, the "Truth of Forests" ability can be applied to your miner, letting you know when ephemeral/unspoiled/legendary herbalism nodes appear while you're mining.

and... /cpose changes your pose between a few options when sitting or standing. And the facial expression emotes do work during many other emotes. For instance, you can use the expression emotes while doing any dance emotes. /gpose of course is a wondrous tool in general. Also for inventory management, note that a lot of the class quest reward gear as well as many quest reward gear in general can be re-purchased (for not much gil) from an npc.. calamity salvager I think? But take note as not all sets can be repurchased from them.
Also know that the item search function works great for figuring out where you put something between all the various inventory systems. And once you start gaining enough grand company currency, it can be an easy place to buy tons of glamour and unglamour stone things (once your GC rank is high enough to buy them).

With the ‘more exp than you know what to do with’, I noticed that by the time I’d finished Heavensward my main job was somewhere like level 64, and I was getting so much exp that I levelled to 65 before even getting out of the first zone of storm blood. So I decided to powerlevel up an alt job to 60 so I could play through with it and alternate for quest hand ins. It worked out quite well- so well in fact that I was out-levelling quests on the alt job before long. So, over the course of Stormblood, I actually ended up levelling 4 jobs to 70. There’s enough exp in Stormblood MSQ to get 4 jobs from 60 to 70. HOWEVER, there is NOT enough exp in Shadowbringers to do that because the Road to 70 buff turns off. My mistake was my hubris to level cap 4 jobs to 80, I hit a point where the MSQ quests required level 74 and I had to go grind out some levels before I could continue the MSQ.

The blue quest marks vs the regular quest marks is probably one of the best advices for new players. Some of those quests, like the ones that unlock the first few Alliance Raids, are actually required to continue on the story.
In particular, you should be doing the blue quests related to the classes and jobs since they unlock some abilities that become key to playing the jobs propperly.
And also, you must equip the crystal you get from the job quests at level 30, otherwise you will be stuck with a less powerful class and won't make progress.

You have nailed so many features others either miss or dismiss. I'm so glad you pointed out Hall of the Novice and Guildhests in particular. Those are designed largely for players new to MMOs in general and FFXIV in particular and more experienced players will dismiss them -- and then dismiss Sprouts who miss mechanics that get taught in these two areas. Joonbob's video is great for those experienced players, but even as someone who has played the game since ARR's launch I still run Hall of the Novice and Guildhests for the exact reasons you bring up.
One other thing tho, from a historical perspective, that people new to the game may not realize is that the XP in the quests during the X.1-X.55 updates is largely nerfed because when you are in that expansion, you're already at level cap (and usually on several classes) by then. I'm not sure what's worse -- getting a tiny bit of XP that's mostly useless or getting a ton of XP that is completely useless -- but quite frankly there are better ways to level alt jobs and those options have only grown over time.
I think anyone in this latest expansion -- in Shadowbringers -- will tell you they blew through the post 5.0 MSQ content as fast as possible. Most people just don't use it to level alt jobs, and I think we can all agree there are better things for the devs to focus on than going back to previous expansions and rebalancing XP awards for quests.
Thanks so much for bringing your perspective to FFXIV, and I hope a lot of new players get a lot from this video.

should be worth noting with chocobo companions is you can assign them to heal, tank or dps to compliment your job as you level

    • @KotCR
      @KotCR 2 роки тому

Don't level the Chocobo's Tanking trait line beyond the third skill until you can purchase the entire line, else it will not be able to hold Emnity.
For a quick explanation, this is because if you only give it the first three tank skills, on tanking/defensive mode the only skill it will be able to use is the +Emnity one. However if you unlock the fourth skill (a slowdown I believe, that doesn't generate any extra Emnity), it will alternate between the two skills and lose Aggro when casting the slowdown; Assuming you yourself are putting out decent DPS.
Once you've got enough skill points to purchase the entire skill line, I think you can do so though as the final skill is also a +Emnity skill.
I learned this the hard way when levelling Healer classes (after already maxing my Chocobo's Offense and Healing lines), forcing me to use an expensive Chocobo Respec item to simply unlearn the extra skills on the Defense line.

For the Chocobo Companion, if you're in an FC and going to take a day or more break from the game, it's also usually worth putting your Chocobo in your FC Stable. While in there your FC Members can feed and train the chocobo inside, giving them exp. They can only bring your chocobo up to 1exp away from levelling, so you still have to withdraw it and fight at least 1 mob for it to progress, but it's a great way to give your chocobo some extra progression while you're out of the game. It does require your FC Members to actually interact with the stable though, so your mmv. Oh, and while in a stable, you can't summon your Chocobo to fight with you, so if you put it in and want to summon it, remember to take it out before you go adventuring!

As a vet since ARR and currently playing with over 2000 days subbed, I suggest taking breaks at the sign of the feeling you get when you'd say "I have to get on with it" for MSQ. You can burn out real quick if you just hyper focus on MSQ or even just the game entirely. I burned myself out 3 times, 2 of which I thought I'd quit but I came back for the expansions.
Also for leve quests, I suggest saving the allowances (you need them to obtain the leve quests and caps out at 100) for crafting and gathering classes if you plan on leveling them. Back in HW, I used them along with grand company turn ins for massive exp boosts and capped out 2 classes from 1-60 (was the cap at the time of HW) in a day.
Preferred servers exp bonus along with the exp boost from FC buff, earring buff from pre-order bonuses can net you about +500-600% exp from killing mobs. With this amount of exp bonus, I suggest you level other jobs you think of playing at the same time and alternate every couple of lvls. For example you can get your class to lv30 but still be on lv20 MSQ so I would then lvl another job to 20 then continue with the MSQ until I get to 30 with that class then hopefully you'll get to unlock the jobs by then because you cant really unlock jobs until you reach a certain MSQ quest thats around lv25 or 26 irrc, even if you're already lv30+.

3:55 I can't agree with that hard enough. Post-Titan is the moment where the story really clicked as something truly special for me, that despite what things might have felt like up to that point this wasn't just some "excuse plot" to keep me ferrying from points A to B to C. If anyone says they don't care about the story, I can't recommend hard enough to just...not skip it up to that point (it happens at level 35, no just about the halfway point through ARR's story), even if you're just speedreading and glancing through the dialogue.

You don't need the FC boost. Do the GC (Grand Company) quests, you will get a NPC squadron to sent on missions or do dungeons with them (AI Controlled). You can get better buffs scrolls from there than the ones from the FC, including manuals for extra exp for DOL and DOH, and you don't depend on your FC activating the buff you need.

    Advice on Hunting Log:
On your first run of each class, you'll want to absolutely use it until Level 30. The XP granted by this point is nearly vital to quickly level without Dungeons and Guildhests. This is ESPECIALLY useful if you are a DPS and your queues take forever.
Completing each log grants a Level 50 ring for the class that is pretty useful up until Heavensward. If you've already been that far... you've got better. But, you also get achievement points, which give you certificates, which you can use to buy things. The level 50 ring is fairly useless once you're into Heavensward as you're just going to have access to far better gear. But, completing the Hunt Log for each character is pretty useful regardless. Do it for the achievements.
An added side-effect of the Hunt Log is that it basically trains you where some of these mobs spawn at. You'll spend a bunch of time looking for them in the area and find places in your map that you didn't see before. If you're doing ARR Hunts, having this knowledge of where these mobs can spawn, can make those hunts much faster and not require a guide. Likewise, if you decide to do the ARR Relic Quests, some of the monsters required by the Braves Books are actually ones you've already killed via the Hunt Log.
Many of the Hunt Logs are actually easier to complete when certain FATEs spawn up. I recommend sometimes waiting for those FATEs as they give significantly more XP for completion and make finding some of the more rare mobs much easier to find.
    My Advice for sprouts:
    1. ROLL ON EVERY PIECE OF GEAR. I am not kidding. Do this. Even if you don't need it. You can trade it in at a certain point for Grand Company Seals which can then be traded in for the useful Ventures for your Retainers as well as a number of other very useful equipment/gear/items. I can't count the amount of idiot players who DO NOT ROLL ON GEAR. Roll on all of it. You want it. Yes, even if it only gives you 23 Seals for turning it in to your Grand Company. Every little bit helps and every Venture is only like 200 Seals or something. They're super cheap.
    2. RAISE YOUR RANK IN THE GRAND COMPANY YOU CHOOSE. I am not kidding, you want to do this. DO IT. Trade your early Seals for rank in your Grand Company. You want to do this in order to unlock easier ways to gain levels in Gathering/Crafting classes as well as to get access to "Squadrons". You WANT squadrons. Why? If you're leveling up DPS classes, this is a guaranteed INSTANT QUEUE for you. Granted, your team will consist of Bots and your choices of dungeons is EXCEPTIONALLY limited... But, this is one of the fastest ways to level. LIkewise, you can get some of your exploration achievements this way and get a substantial amount of loot. You can also use Squadrons for any "run a bunch of dungeons" grind you need to do. There is also a final rank in each Grand Company (maybe more?) you get from doing enough Squadrons content. Now, running each dungeon with your squadron WILL cost you some Seals to do. But, if you've been doing number one... Or looting everything and killing everything... the price of admission isn't much for the excessive XP you can get.
    3. While it is tempting to just "run to the end of the dungeon" as quickly as possible, you may want to avoid that. Not sure if you've noticed, but the XP you get from every single kill is VERY significant. You can easily gain 3+ levels BEFORE a boss fight if you're killing everything. If dungeons are particularly long, you also gain a lot more XP from the kills than you would from "fast dungeon clears". One of these is just "fast dungeon clears" for a small XP reward, which leads to needing to clear a dungeon multiple times (which can be a problem as a DPS and needing to queue). The other is "maximizing XP gain per run". Generally, most people are playing to level up. It's honestly better to be efficient about your time. Namely, if you've gotta spend more than 20 seconds in queue... you should be killing everything to maximize the time you've spent. That's less queueing you'll need to do later for leveling.
Of course, the exception is going to be the MSQ Roulette. It's way too long for how little XP it gives you. You're best off just running that one as quick as possible.
    4. The earliest mount you can get, I think comes from the CNJ questline. I think you can obtain it at Level 20 or something. Once you have CNJ to level 20, you can take a random sidequest nearby where you would take your class quests and get awarded the Unicorn Mount. Far earlier than any other Mount you're going to have access to.
    5. Fight alongside your chocobo nearly every day. It is VERY LONG and VERY TEDIOUS to level up your Chocobo Companion. Leaving it in the FC Stable is going to SEEM faster, but it may not be. You are going to forget it is in there. You are going to forget to actually level it up in there. And it can't actually help you in combat at all if it's in there. Put it in the stable to change it's color and then take it with you everywhere. I promise you, as long as you're doing "current content" for your class, it will level up quickly. Especially with the "Bosom Buddies" challenges in the log, which give your Chocobo a TON of XP.
The ideal leveling method for your Chocobo is to put it in the stable, let others train it, then bring it out with you everywhere and run "the highest content" you can. Namely, a ton of FATEs for your current level. Your Chocobo will level up VERY FAST if you can do this. Especially since they can only be trained so many times a day. Basically, if you're logging out for a while, stable it so it can be trained while you're offline. If you're online, pull it from the stable and travel with it to level it.

I want to mention that Controller isn't just a narrative control scheme. You can 100% beat the hardest raids with a gamepad and be just as comfortable as KBM.
I know this sounds like insanity to people who are used to WoW, but it's just true. All your spells and abilities will fit on a controller, and the game is designed to be really smooth when you use it. For example your character will auto-face your target in this game when you click an ability, which means you don't need to finagle your orientation in a fight - just your positioning.
I personally recommend something like a PS4 or PS5 controller, because it has a touchpad. Not only is it useful for chat, but you can also use some 3rd party software to bind gestures to it (for example I have my "blink" ability on swipe-up, and mount summoning on swipe-left, freeing the more useful buttons for combat abilities.

But still, I wish I had started the process of leveling them up, because there's this thing called "ventures" that you can send your retainer out on every hour (real time), which will help your retainers level up. This is important so that they can do higher level missions and bring you back better goodies. If you wait too long, you'll be playing catch up for a while waiting for your retainer to catch up to your own main job's level, which kind of sucks. So yeah. Unlock early and start using ventures right away. You can also spend your grand company seals that you get early on, on venture coins. This is also one of the best uses for company seals if you're looking to make a lot of gil later on.

You missed the Grand Company Squad - nice way to get exp and a possible way to get a Battle manual that boost exp too (they can do doungens with you... quing as DPS can be slow and the squad can cut that down)

I wish the Squadron was a bit more robust, but I understand the devs fixed that for Shadowbringers with the Trust system. But Squadrons are a great way for a new player to get comfortable with the roles before queuing up for groups!

Rested exp is accrued whenever you are in any sanctuary. You'll notice entering and leaving cities and outposts that you get a chat log message that says "You have entered a sanctuary." As long as you are in there, you accrue rested exp. The amount you gain is much higher when you are logged off, but it accrues regardless of being online or not.

Glad you mentioned it. This was one comment if not in here I was going to make. Also note that you can tell if you are in a sanctuary if you see a crescent moon symbol next to your xp bar

While general sidequests don't offer amazing EXP, they often do offer a piece of gear as a reward. For people running the MSQ for the first time, especially if they switched jobs right before starting a new expansion pack, they might find their gear lacking, and doing a few sidequests here or there can supplement missing pieces. ALTERNATELY, starting in Heavensward, these pieces of gear are HQ (High Quality) and can be sold on the market board, often for pretty hefty prices, due to them being required turn-ins for crafting leve quests. Imagine getting a piece of gear for killing 3 easy monsters that rakes in 80,000 gil. It's entirely possible to end up a multi-millionaire by the time you reach Shadowbringers simply by doing the sidequests that give gear and selling it. A lot of people will tell you to take the Allagan Coins options, but those are almost always worse. Even shitty ARR gear still rakes in about 1000 gil or more, which is a better conversion rate than Allagan Tin pieces.

Something to know about the ARR patch quests: in 5.2 (I think) they trimmed it down A LOT. about 20%-30% of the quest content has been cut entirely when they revamped ARR to streamline the leveling there. Before 5.2, there were a few level walls and a loooooot of clearly garbage quests. Older players remember the feeling of those still, and that heavily colors their perception of that slog, because back then it was. Now it's pretty smooth but it used to be very, very rough.

Palace of the Dead followed by Heaven on High, seems to be a popular way of levelling alt jobs 1-70, no armour required.

ARR by and large is a giant introduction to the world and characters. From Heavensward on, the story picks up in a big way.

A little off topic but There is at least one standard quest that I think deserves to be elevated to a blue one.
It unlocks an emote where your character adjusts their glasses and each race will do so slightly differently. You also get a robe/ jacket thing and a pair of glasses in the style used by a character involved in the level 50 Hildebrand quest chain.
It can be started in the markets in ishgard once you get into its Endgame. Not sure if you need to have done the Hildebrand 50 stuff to get it to appear or not but those quests are worth looking into anyway if only for a laugh and some emotes.
To clarify Hildebrand quests are a laugh. There is a separate one for heavenward too but the glasses quest is more serious

More for the chocobo, as this comes in real important for soloing for many jobs, get its healing tree up pronto. While it is no full fledged healer, for those jobs without much in the way of self heal it is invaluable for keeping you alive, especially if you want to solo fates with bosses.

People seem to often overlook the main use for the Chocobo: You can give it healing abilities which increases your soloing potential and saves you when things go south.

Just started last night and really enjoying the storytelling of the game. I’m a hardcore mythic player and raider but this casualness is a nice touch. I’m going to play both game as I love love WoW my fist true love in gaming. I will enjoy both to its maximum. Both amazing games for me.

We did a lot of side quests instead of understanding the true importance of MSQ. At 18 we watched a video and changed our strategy. Our goal was to be at Endwalker when it released. After finishing Shadowbringers, we have the options to have some fun opening up the dungeons at our leisure as we work on other jobs. It's good to know that the MSQs and food (and earring) will handily get through through an expansion. There is so much to do at any time, the luxury of doing what I want for side quests, apartments, glamour, Golden Saucer, etc., when I want, after the forced WoW grind, is amazing.

Heads up. Hunting log is only for ARR and is kind of meh xp wise comparatively to other systems. It's not a bad thing to do, but it's not something you'll rely on past 50. There are weekly hunts in each expansion you can do, but Hunting Log just sort of falls to the wayside.
OH, and another huge tip, keep up with your class quests. It's a quest that shows up under your MSQ button that shows up every time one is available (ARR - every 5 levels). This is how you'll unlock job abilities through ARR.
