Now you've made me want to try again, but I don't have this mold. Is there one similar to this except maybe small butterflies? My kiln interior is about 6"x6"

Can you uses colored art sand or does it have to be a special type of colored processed sand? (have you ever tried in your kiln what art sand would do)

And how would coloring sand by food coloring or other dyes hold up interms of adding color to the glass cast... as i not so sure where you can get the powders your using , varieties of colors , and for a reasonable cheap price.

So i have a sea conch, and it has two major broken pieces (front // back part) I want to fill those pieces in with a layer of grit so that it is see thru and sealed. Any ideas with going about doing this?
Curious in your opinion does frit = recycled glass broken down of the same color? I get the size of the recycle glass broken down is defined by what grain sizes your grinder can grind to. Do you know who would grind glass down or where you can get a grinder to make your own frit sizes.
Hello, I love this, but question? Is the mold just a regular ceramic slip mold? do you only use the half of the mold and set it into the kiln to fire or do you put the other part of the mold on top of it? Just not sure.. Joe Ann
+Joe Ann Hancock It is a mold made of fired earthenware clay. It is not a plaster mold. Frit casting molds for glass are typically open face like this one.
Can you grind up church glass or stain glass from an old project and uses it as frit? Art people that are familiar with stained glass cutting/piecing/soldering may wonder if its possible to grind that left overs and use as frit.
No, you need to use glass that is specially made for fusing. It will be listed as either 90 COE or 96 COE (coefficient). Use one or the other, don't mix 90 with 96.
The more i watch this video the more i think one can just smash up recycled glass of different colors into powder and shards to do the equivalent of the brand name colors/glazes...but not completely sure...i have to say the brands have much more color selection.... so i am curious on also how they make the different color glass powder/glazes you have...maybe you know / want to do a video on that... nice nice nice art.
Iridescent coated glass made into frit. The irridecent effect is made by coating the glass in a chemical at the manufacturing stage, giving it a silvery coloured finish like mother of pearl.
Check out the Crucible Guide to Industrial Art. It deals with much larger work, but they give the mold recipe. I just googled "materials need for a glass mold and they came up.

Should frit be piled up higher in the middle of the mold to account for shrinkage? I don't have a scale to weigh it. Thanks.

Mix a 1:1 mixture of plaster and silica with water until it has the texture of heavy cream. A gram scale is needed to get your amounts right.
