My First Harley Transmission Rebuild: Part 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 бер 2024
- I felt like I was going to be waiting forever to get this old 4 speed back together! But it’s finally done and, other than waiting for parts, it went relatively well. If I learned one thing through this process, it was to ALWAYS thoroughly check which parts may need replacing before going ahead and placing an order at the parts shop 😅
And, anyone who want's to send me pictures of their bikes, you can email me at:
redrider.canada.bc@gmail.com
PLEASE SEND LARGE CLEAR PHOTOS!
1080p x 1080p is the MINIMUM we can work with, so please do your best at making sure your photos are large and not blurry 🙂 And send more than one if you can as well!
Only motorcycle related emails please - sorry, but I just don't have the time to engage in personal conversations.
Thank you for your understanding.
If you DON'T want your bike highlighted in a future video showing viewers bikes then make sure to mention it in your email. Other than that, expect to see your bike in one of my videos!

Thanks for coming around, and I will catch ya on the flipside!
I am impressed by your work on the gearbox, everything assembled properly, and to spec. That transmission should now last a long time, a thing of beauty to behold!
Thank you! I hope it lasts a while haha
I’m in awe with your adaptivity with using basic materials for pressing on bearings. No need for expensive tools for one time use. I just learned how to use copper plumbing pieces to install the c clip on my piston wrist pin ends. Adapt and overcome. Patience is the most important skill when performing close tolerance jobs. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching!! And yes, sometimes we just have to improvise to get the job done ✅
Congratulations Angel!! That's a big job done, and the experience is yours to keep! Awesome!! 😊
Thank you so much!!
Awesome job Angel always enjoy watching you work on your motorcycles. Also learning from you. 🙏🏻👍🇺🇸🇺🇸💯
Awesome! Thank you!
Great job! Takes a lot of determination to accomplish a rebuild like this. I am doing a WL transmission while waiting for parts for the Panhead. It has all the little needle bearings. Fun stuff..........
My friend was talking about getting me to do his WL tranny, but still hasn't got it to me haha.
@@RedRiderCanadaBCLots of needle bearings...........
Hi 👋, Angel, that was a great job, checking through each stage of the preparation before assembly, is the right way to go about it, You check and doublecheck, great job, the only Time you want to start worrying is when you start having nightmares, thinking you have put things in backwards or you have left things out, 😂, and as they say practice makes perfect, 😂, I have rebuilt two gearboxes many many years ago one triumph, Bonneville, and the other one was a Norton dominator, And if I remember rightly ha ha, they took me two or three weekends,
Great job Angel, hopefully somebody will send you some lovely gloves, the right size, 😂
The worst part about this whole job was all the time I spent waiting for parts!
@@RedRiderCanadaBC I have heard that wheel through time sometimes have waited years for parts to come along,
A friend back in the uk purpose goes to swap meets and buys up parts for old Norton and old BSA, Because he knows at some point that he will need them, or he will know somebody that does, in his area, there is a load of people that ride vintage bikes,
Somebody that we know through another friend sold a bike about two years ago. I think it went to Sotherby London auction house and fetched over £200,000 , I can’t remember the model of it,
Great job Angel... Wanted to tell you I was very pleased with your interaction with your dad in the live feeds during your visit to the U.S. Any man would be lucky to have such a caring child... It was also great to see him reply to comments of VR16, maybe he will continue to be involved in that way... Thank you...
Thank you Cobar 😊 I think my dad is more active in the comments lately!
Most excellent... I like your honesty.. The humor is good to
😁😁😁😁
You did a killer job Angel way to go. I know those are fun to rebuild and frustrating! 🤘😎🏖🌴
Hey this is Lloyd from the camp out, thanks for the magazine, love it ❤❤❤
You're very welcome! Glad you love it 😊
That "tight but not too tight because it's going into aluminum" is a gauge I've never had. 😂 You did good.
Your bloopers crack me up too! Keep it up!
Hahahah glad you liked it

You have totally amazed me young lady I Would have never attempted to do what you just did I do have a good transmission guy that lives close to me and is very reasonable when it comes to fixing things for me obviously you had a wonderful teacher give your dad a well-deserved big hug
Thank you 😊😊😊
I have a small lathe and make brass fittings to press bearings in etc. That way it is also easy to get the depth of the bearing exact, I just machine a piece with a flange.
Good idea! I need a lathe though.
I love how troll edits the beginning of these vids....lol great stuff!!!!
Hahahah yeaaa lol
Great job you know what you are doing I was so happy to got too meet you have a great evening
Thanks! You too! 😊 I'll be back
You may wish to look into the DJI Cameras in the future. From what I understand from others videos the GoPro has at least 12 flaw’s when attempting to run and they have all been there from the very first GoPro Camera to the present one. The DJI Camera on the other hand has 2 flaws if you wish to call them that, 1) $100.00 cheaper American and the 2) is you loose all the GoPro faults. I hope this information is helpful to you.
Thank you!! I definitely will be investing in DJI when it fits my budget.
Love that MACK shop stool.
Not bad eh!
WOW 😮 this video was way over my head.
How do you remember all that stuff. Good 👍 job of pushing through. 😎Dave H
I read that section of the manual soooo many times by through the course of this job lol
Nice! That was a real journey. I hope it shifts perfectly.
Meeee toooo!!
Great job, i definitely have some work too do on my 4spd sooner or later
You can do it! 💪
Finally done great job, on the spirolocs i always install with direction so the edge cant catch with rotation and love the chain wrench your Dad made, safe travels home after Florida
😃😃😃😃
Red, you have done an excellent job with this video !!!!
Thank you!!
Killer trans build! I love these old four speeds ❤
Thanks!!
That was a great video. I'll be digging into my first 4 speed soon. Now I know what I'm in for, thanks!
Awesome!!
Make everything slimy. That's some great advise😊
Lol got get greasy with it sometimes
I'm glad you are done with that, you really looked frustrated with that transmission. But I got to tell you as one technician to another, you will run into crazy crap like that more often then you can believe. It's just the nature of the game. But you handle it very well. Keep turning those wrenches little lady. 😊
Thanks for the encouragement 😁
Celebrate 🥳🥂
You did a great job ♥️ Red
🪶 Loved the video!
Thanks!!
You’re doing a great job Red Rider I’d like to see it when it’s on the bike and running like to hear what it sounds like so good luck. Have a great time.
I’d like to see it running too!!
Cool red rider

Thanks!!
That dam seal nut that goes against the sprocket was too fat it hit my inner primary had to remove it on my 82 flh nice work well done.
Thank you 🙏
I was going to try and be funny and say "not bad for a girl", but you blew my mind!! That was an !AMAZING! assembly video, that was like a Master Class in HD vintage tranny rebuild.
Hahaha well thank you 😊
Patience is the name of the game when working on anything dealing with motors or trannys. I start out with patience but that usually goes right into frustration. I do admire your calm spirit when working with those measurements. I bet you did well in math in school! Glad you are back home safe and sound and had a great trip to sunny Florida and got to meet all those other YT's there. Keep wrenching and hopefully the weather warms enough to start riding! Stay safe! Peace!
Math was actually my best subject! And I still enjoy it now 🧮 And thanks! I had a great trip and cannot wait to go back!
Thank 's for the rebuild , was doing mine at the same time isn't that a peach ! Good vid though and got part of my shovel together on a new frame ! Thank's
Glad it helped!! Thanks for watching 😃
Buy small , my wife has small hands n the small disposables fit her good
I can never find anything smaller than medium for some reason 🤔

Great job Red. BABY UROCK.

ANGEL THAT IS VERY NICE AND YOU DID VERY GOOD
Thank you!
Angel great video I want to go thru my 4 speed and just make sure it’s up to snuff. What you call ready rod is called all thread her in the US. Like I told a guy in the comments the other day you have forgotten more about Harleys than most people will ever know. As always you take care and stay safe.
Thanks John ☺ I definitely still have a lot to learn!!
I love your videos keep up the great work!
Thank you ☺️
Yo Red, 👍👍 Love the tail end of the video😂✌️😘♥️😎🇺🇸
😁 Haha yea things get worse as I get tired
Bob was the culprit peddling washer sandwiches for four speed transmissions (sadly some people came to the hard conclusion that those washer sandwiches weren't edible).... and THAT is how Bob became so popular in everyday sayings. 😁
Bob was the name of my Dodge before he quit starting this winter. His name privileges were duly stripped and he got donated to a flatbed truck.
😂😅
Awesome JoB!!❤🎉
Thank you!! 😁
Thank You Very Much For Sharing 👍 🇯🇲

perseverance paid off, well done.

Red you did great on this rebuild, I look forward to the next one!👌

I be willing to bet money that this is not your first time inside a Harley ratchet top tranny . Well done And a well done video . Congrats to your Dad whom I would think is your mentor and to you being an excellent student .... And as us old guys say you have excellent shop skills and what is called good shop practice ....
Thanks!! It actually is my first time inside any transmission!
Well you could have fooled me . Maybe it's your first one by yourself but anyway good job .. @@RedRiderCanadaBC
Thought you were in :Flordia. Amsoil, Granger, Harbor Freight all have small work gloves. HF dont last very long.
Thanks! And I was in Florida, this vid was on a scheduled release
I approve this message…

Hello from Nj great job
Hello there! And thanks 🙂
I have a Sportster 883 1999 . Everything on a Sportster lasts forever compared to the big twins and I love it . Be proud of your motorcycle knowledge. You are a rare bird. Hands on is how you learn. Plus the busted knuckles.
😊😊😊
Love your hillbilly ingenuity angel😊❤

I built motors before but no transmission, I bet you are glad you are done with it, Have a great day.
Such a relief to be done with it haha.
Jimmy rig ? Is that Bob's cousin ? Thanks for the laugh. Made my day !
No it's Jerry's cousin ... LOL
😆 😆
Man, that was amazing; I know you're glad to finally have that out of the way! I couldn't begin to do any of that without detailed instructions. I better learn quick, though, because I'm gonna change the shift drum to an N-1 (neutral below first gear) in my new Baker 6OD before I install it. Looking forward to the Florida videos!
I read the manual like 6 times hahah
Woohoo 🎉
By the way, I don't know if you have tool trucks in Canada but if you see a Snap On or Matco tool truck you can get small and extra small work gloves. 😉
Cool, good to know! Thanks.
Great job Ms angel. I guess Lurky didn't come back.( black crow)
Nope, lil guy is still gone 😔
First! Try a box of latex gloves maybe? Hope your trip home was a good one!
Made it back to bc! Just have one more layover then home.

This was definitely more entertaining than watching brain surgery . . . I think! Certainly more relatable. Great job, Angel!
Thank you 😊

Yaaaaaa !!! 🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉
🤩🤩🤩🤩
heat case freeze bearing , seals can split so do not freeze
👍👍👍👍
Entertaining? More like amazing, little sister! You're obviously pretty smart but how do you know all of this? Just read the service manual? O.U.T. standing by telling you step by step? Grew up helping O.U.T. fix loads of them?
Fascinated to watch you do it but gladder than ever that Thunderchief Garage is a few blocks from my house.
I read that’s section in the service manual like 5 times during the process haha. And if I got stuck on something that was being a pain my dad would give me a hand.
👌🏻

Sometimes having patience is the secret. Apparently you have more than l do. I did find if my patience tank run out l just walk away. Come back the next day or two and things just seem to fall into place . Go figure. Take care Angel. 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Yep, I definitely feel ya there.
It must be wonderful to know how to fix hogs.
It is
mine looks like it's going to be 3 weeks of time, waiting on shift fork bushings and that should be it. 3 weeks... can't complain
The waiting always sucks a little...

Chinese gloves ,that should do the trick

Well that was powerful....🤘❤💯
What kind of oil do you put in this gearbox?
I normally run an 80 weight Lucas gear oil.
Third on wooooooo
🎉🎉🎉
Tiny hands on a woman can do very delicate work in the mechanic field . Hey Red I've been through my ratchet top a couple times and when I rev out the engine in first I seem to find a false neutral attempting to upshift to second what could I be missing here?❤
I honestly don't know these transmissions well enough to diagnose an issue without looking into it personally. But I do know that these 4 speeds have a habit of going into a false neutral...
@@RedRiderCanadaBC ok thanks
Are you back from florida already
I am now!
Napa has small groves.
Oh thanks!
Just. Watched ur video it was great, ur beautiful.
Thank you 😁
Shouldn't the "shield" be removed from the inside of the bearing?
The main shaft bearing is sealed and all one piece.
the main shaft bearing is shielded, not sealed. oil can still pass through the shields.
@@o.u.t.olduglytroll3712
The shielded bearings that worked with were shield and sealed to outside trash from abusing the seal. The pumps that I rebuilt did not need that protection so I removed the inner seal/ seal.

Who is Jimmy Rig lol

I haven't been watching but 30 seconds and already need to comment before I forget, since I am olt like that... I like that phrase "I will be right back... Not "we", just me..." That drives me crazy when a single person suddenly become "WE" when they get in front of the camera. I'm always wondering who in the world is "we"... Bruh, you are ONE PERSON!... Maybe all those "We" people identify as They/Thems :)
😂😂😂😂😂 Same here Tommy! I am me, not we. Lol
You have good taste in clothes. If I weren't on the other side of the world, I would definitely buy (Выкупил бы) this warm jacket with a square pattern in a green-gray-dark print "Army print" from you. I love things "Like the wool of young lambs" 😯🤤
