Mike has heard people in the golf industry talk about “throwing a ball.” They want you to feel the golf swing and feel like you are throwing the golf ball way out in front. Doing this causes your right elbow to go in front of your hip, an exaggeration you don’t want to happen. Your right elbow should work on your right hip. Ben Hogan kept his right elbow even with his hip when he swung a golf club. It never outran his hip.
Mike says you don’t want to feel like you are throwing the ball out in front of you. Instead, try throwing a ball at another ball placed where you would set it up on a tee.
Mike demonstrates this and says that if he practices enough, he can hit the ball anywhere on the surface of the target ball. This drill helps you to direct momentum down towards the ball and, in this case, a golf club. When you swing, you are directing the momentum of the clubhead down to the ball.
Mike also shows us if you follow what others are saying and want the clubhead to run into the ball, you will miss the ball on the swing.
Again, Mike says you are throwing momentum into the back of the ball with the golf club. Get a feel for throwing a ball and feel how loose your wrist is when you do this. This is the same feeling you have in a golf swing.

This may be the best video for amateur golfers anywhere on the internet, if you know what you are looking at. The big mistake for the average golfer is that they look at pictures and try to duplicate the picture of the right elbow in front of the right hip, and not beside the right hip and on the side of the golfer. They don't use their arms correctly, and throw the club head first and foremost. Just moving the elbows from right to left for a right hander does not cut it. You must instead use the upper arms correctly to throw the club head from the inside to out directly at the golf ball. Mike describes exactly how to do this, and then tells you what not to do! Don't just move you right elbow to in front of the right hip, the big extremely common mistake!!

This is a great one Mike. Padraig Harrington recommends doing this on his channel as a warm-up on the 1st tee if you're short on time.

Absolutely! Throw the club head at the ball, from the top. The way to throw the club head, make a throw of the club head, is to drive the right elbow to the right side of the golfer, upper arm down to body, as this is what gets the club head thrown. The hand and wrist are along for the ride and the elbow is allowed to extend. It will feel like the club head is thrown inside to out directly at the ball.

    Thanks mike...
I feel like this will help with feeling my release point
One question, its at the ball in the centre for irons...
where would you aim to throw and release the ball with driver...

  • @steveng8727

Tom Watson would agree- he recently said 'throw the clubhead at the ball' & '80% of the speed is from the hands'!

Makes sense as you suggest, this creates lag and power from the hipps. Doing this will help avoid using arms.

This is all well and good, for right handed golfers playing right handed, or vice versa. However, I'm left handed and play right handed. Poorly at best. I cannot even throw a ball anywhere with my right hand, let alone swing a club with my right hand.
For once, I'd like to see a golf instructor, whether a youtuber or in person, take a poor golfer and transform them. Still waiting....

Doing this drill and practicing a bit at the driving range reeeally made a huge difference for me. I think it would be worth it for you to make the switch to left-handed clubs. My buddy made the swtich so he could take advantage of using his dominate hand (his left hand), to throw the ball/club at the ball....and now he's playing waaaay better than he did when using right-handed clubs...just some food for thought.
There's no "silver-bullet" when making a swing change, you need to practice the ball drill and then use that thought with the club. Once I got used to it, I never went back. Now it's my one and ONLY swing thought...just throwing the club at the ball. Tiger Woods, who had one of the most legendary runs on the PGA tour, said the same EXACT thing himself...the power and control comes from the trail hand, and the body will follow naturally.
