I love watching this channel. I know nothing about forging but he has such a great attitude towards everything he does. Keep up the good work and great videos. Also props to the editing.
I love watching people who aren't complete pros at what they do. You get to see them go through the process of learning and improving upon their past works. I find it really cool to look at where people have come from in terms of their skill level. Alec admits that he still has things to learn about what he does, and acknowledges his mistakes that he made in the past which I think is cool.

Great that you have Dollar shave club as a sponsor, been using their products for years. Once u swap u never go back to the store bought stuff! great work as always looking forwards to see the finished knife! much love!
Honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen someone so well mastered in the art of black smithing and video editing, as well as photography all in the same. Great b-roll shots and excellent video.
I deeply enjoy your work and you have inspired me to get back into forging and smithing, but more so I like you're up beat attitude. It really shows how involved you are with your art and how rewarding it can truly be. Keep up the great work Mr. Steele.

randi watson that is awesome! I'm glad to be of inspiration and counted in the same manner as Alec.. I hope that you will keep continuing in the craft and have many successful projects!
You can tell this guy really loves and enjoys what he does, I bet a good portion of what he makes from youtube is reinvested into his setup. Really nice content.
You need to go back further than that, I would suggest maybe a crash coarse and start about 1 1/2 years ago. Alec does some awesome blacksmithing/tutorial videos, then progresses into sword and knife making...
When quenching in oil, make sure to keep it longer than you did in the video. Oil cools about half as quickly as water, so it's important to keep it long enough to ensure it cools down enough. We've tested improperly quenched steel and its hardness and mechanical properties are negatively affected. especially on thicker pieces the centers don't form the harder phases of iron. Good editing, very enjoyable to watch. keep it up:)
2 questions. Why didn't you make it a full tang? And second why don't you use a infrared thermometer to check the temperature of the steel between normalizing and quenching sessions. That way you would get very accurate results.
My only assumption is what he touched on in the first part. Damascus is incredibly inefficient to work with and the amount of material he had didn't allow for a long enough tang.
I love your videos and I’ve been watching them forever you’ve just had such and improvement in editing and smithing since I watched my first of your videos “Beginners projects forging a leaf wall hook” 2 years ago I still remember the notification popping up keep up the good work Alec and best of luck with the new knife and to be honest I kinda miss the old shop
Hey Alec, Just a comment on machining. You can get a more accurate fit if you don't hit it with a hammer when you put it into the vice. The hammer strike can cause it to bounce up and off the parallels and end up slightly crooked. Its more accurate to simply hold it in place with finger pressure. You can also feel anything that is out of square with your fingers much better. Keep up the good work man! Sure love your videos!
I have watched only a few videos of yours and the video angles and compilations always keep me amazed!! when watching this channel you can tell how much effort he puts into a video.
Your earlier work isn’t terrible, neither is your current work, it’s all on the way to being better at what you do. No need to be so negative about our past experiences or work, it’s what makes us better at what we do. Yes we have to be critical of our work, yes we have to appraise what we can improve and yes we have to learn lessons but without those important stages along our path we would never improve. You have a body of work to look back on and you’ve continually stretched yourself, so you should be both proud and pleased with your development. Keep on keeping on!
At about 4:20 I got crazy excited that guy is awesome loved watching him on forged in fire awesome that you got to talk to him and get tips. You guys are amazing
Love the ultra smooth loveliness that dollarshave club gives me. Also Alec I saw the end of the fuller shame shame you need to clean it up and the floor of the forge is a bit messy to. The shop looks great

My understanding is that trying to forge something as complex as a knife without prior knowledge will only lead to frustration. And a whole lot of wasted steel. There's probably a reason why apprentices to a medieval blacksmith started by practicing how to forge nails (after working the bellows and cleaning the forge for a year or two, then swinging the sledge hammers for their masters once they were old enough). They usually also had to craft their own tools (hammers, pliers, chisels etc), furthering their knowledge. I'd try that first before moving on to more difficult items like knifes or (heavens forbid) swords. After all's said and done, blacksmithing is *not* a hobby. It is a craft that can take years to master, even with the aid of modern technology.
@@prsm3 I think what NaHCO3 is trying to say is don't expect even recognizable progress to happen quickly. It's something that takes a lot of fundamentals.
