Young man, I am a retired HS Chemistry teacher, now working as a facilitator/teacher for a homeschool organization. You are my go-to guy (a superb teacher) after I teach my kids for a day. I'm glad you do what you do!
For someone who knows absolutely nothing about chemistry (ME). And listening about in our classroom lectures and reading the text book, I've still get mixed up to a degree about how all the mechanics work together and why. So Hallelujah for You Tube and your many different presentation! You've made it easier for me to understand how all this is put together. Thank you for your time, passion, and your great teaching skills. You will be the place I go to in getting a better understanding of chemistry. Even though I am taking a biology class, we have chemistry mixed. Again, Thank you. you've made this so much easier for me. Keep up the great work. I will for sure pass your name around for those who are or may be struggling with the terms and functions of chemistry.
I've just read eight different explanations of what an ion is, and none of them made complete sense. Well done for your excellent explanation! Also, I love the way you use notes/drawings on paper for presenting it, it's refreshing and visually very interesting. Thank you for your excellent work!
My science teacher is literally in love with you and makes us watch all your chemistry videos lmfao, I'm not complaining bc your video explains very well and I actually understand what you're talking about.
English is not my native language and i dont have vocabulary when it comes to this staff like physics, mathematics' or chemistry. But thanks to you i understood it really fast and didnt even had to rewinding. Thank you !
I took Biology 101, I did not understand to the professor about Bio or Chemistry. I am learning a lot with your videos, even laughing in the middle of the learning, because how natural you teach and give vocabulary and how not forget the words. you are awesome. Thank you really are helping students who do not learn with the professor who are not any good.
I have never taken Chemistry and I am a sophomore in college. My first Chem lesson hit me in the face on my Anatomy and Physiology class. I am completely lost due to no Chem background whatsoever, but thanks for your videos !! They really helped me a lot!!!!
Thanks, Tyler. There are so many videos out there that complicate the definition of an ion, but you gave the concise simple version. I want to understand batteries, and this is a topic that comes up a lot. My goal is to get a fundamental understanding of batteries. I don't want to become a chemist.
I didn't think it was possible to ever understand Chemistry. OH MY GOD, THANK U SO SO MUCH. I took a chemistry course in my junior year of college and learned nothing. What seemed so hard is now easily understood. The value of a good teacher is PRICELESS!!! THANK YOU!!
The thing I don't understand at all: Is why the !#@$ is classroom chemistry made SOOOOOOO much more difficult than it needs to be? This is more than enough theory for the average science non-chemistry major. Why is every chem class, including basic general chem, taught to the idea that everyone in the class is going to be chemists? Also, why can't chem professors teach more like this guy?
Two reasons 1) It is a screening/weeding out course (I didn't say I agree, but at least that's the way it used to be, and 2) Many people who are good at understanding science don't have the skills to teach it.
It's definitely not taught with the idea that everyone's gonna be a chemist. I think it's more so taught with idea of "Most of you are gonna fail anyway. So I'm not gonna waste my time dumbing it down for you."
I'm taking Anatomy and Physiology as a General Education course after many years and returning to school. Your videos are tremendous. I'm a visual person and learn best that way. Your presentation, explanations, added examples, and clear description are a great help to my class. Thank you so much for taking time to present these.
Thanks a lot to this brilliant Teacher, who can make complex matters so easy by his simple and impressive presentation, especially for those who feared and hated Chemistry because of the unskilled teachers who could only reproduce the sentences in the book without the creativity and imagination to break into smaller chunks of chocolates. He is indeed a blessing to all the Chemistry students, who were taught by boring teachers who just fly through the explanations, without the proper skills.
Professor Tyler, I don't understand how transition elements have multiple charges. For example, how can iron have a 2+ and 3+ charge? And what do the Roman numerals mean on the periodic table of ions? Your help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.
I just want to thank you for doing these videos. You have really saved me. I find Chemistry to be so intimidating and you have made it understandable for me. I literally don't know what I would do without these!
I love the teaching that you do here, let me first say that. But the representation of an Atom, with the Nucleus being orbited by Electrons, is such a distorted picture of what an Atom really is that I'm afraid it gives people the wrong idea of what an Atom really is. I know that it's fine for educational purposes, but I wish educators would use a different way to represent a simple picture of the idea of an Atom that does't misrepresent the truth about Atoms and doesn't give people the idea that electrons can even be seen in there orbitals, as opposed to being in probability clouds. Again, not your fault, but maybe you should at least remind people that this is a simplified picture of an Atom, and is not drawn to scale.
These are all good points. Usually when I show a Bohr atomic model, I mention that it's a very simplistic model of the atom and not entirely correct. I'm sorry I forgot to say that in this video. Still, I think it's important to remember that we can always add detail, nuance and precision to students' technical understandings later on, but we have to initially present material in a way that is fundamentally understandable to young learners. Because at the end of the day, every explanation of science is a simplification. The common conception of a quantum mechanical model of an atom is a crude representation compared to the more sophisticated model suggested by, say, the normalization of electron wave function eigenvectors. Even that model is a simplification compared to what is known by the actual scientists performing the experiments, and the model changes with each new piece of information that is discovered. But the point is, I feel we each rely on the simplification that is appropriate for our needs. A nuclear physicist needs to rely on the most sophisticated of models, and she is well equipped to understand and reason with it. But for students just starting out in Chemistry, who can barely comprehend the concept of an atom, I don't know how much precision is needed. I'm not saying that it's not important, I'm honestly saying I don't know how much is too much or not enough.
UA-cam and all college students are so blessed to have you! We will be getting to know each other for the next six years of my life. Thank you so much for your videos i hope you know how much we appreciate you taking the time!
