I'm in a college Ceramics course and the cylinder has been kicking me in the pants. I've looked for multiple videos describing the process in-depth and the way it was done in my class. This is absolutely the best one out there.
I'm a self taught potter, and I've been getting a bit down on myself as I've been really struggling with cylinders. This video has changed everything though. Feel like I've come on leaps and bounds after these instructions. Thank you!!!!!
I'm an early learner in wheel throwing and I've been struggling with pulls for six straight weeks of class! I still can't get a proper cylinder after all this time, so the handful of items I've made are (rather thick-sided) bowls and spoon rest-type things. I'm finally realizing one stumbling block of mine is that - despite the fact that I am a righty - all the instruction to do all pulls from the right side (4-5 o'clock) hasn't felt natural to me at all: I can't get the pressure-counterpressure right, starting with the initial pull. Seeing you do the first pull to the left just blew my mind because I keep wanting to pull from that side! I'm going to have to try that next time I'm at the wheel, and I would bet that will finally allow me to make progress on my pulls. Thanks for sharing this!
I'm in college at 49yrs.. Studying art and design.. Pottery and ceramics is my goal.. However, i have no tutorials for throwing... I find again in life, the over intellectualisation of everything robs the fun creative skill building aspect of the art form. I patiently teach myself with videos like this.. I will master the cylinder and pulling walls properly and nicely. Thanks for this channel ❤️❤️🙏
THANK YOU, CLAY LADY!! You are very talented and it is so kind of you to share your knowledge. You make the best instructional videos that I have seen. I am learning so much from your teaching. Thanks again.
I greatly appreciate that you explained where the clay is coming from that builds the wall up. Til now it seemed just a little bit magical - as if clay were coming from nowhere. But now I see that it comes from narrowing the width of the base, mostly, and only ha bit comes from reducing the thickness of the initial sidewall. Getting this bit by bit...
Love to learn from you! You are really stunning with clay! And such a Nice, great way of teaching! Thank you SO much for sharing on you tube SO i can see this also in Amsterdam!
Clay lady I have a question- when I’m pulling the clay on the outside that I’m supposed to pull ends up becoming a ring that gets removed once I get to the top. What am I doing wrong?
Personally, I feel like some of us have to make the mistakes before we learn how to fix them. I look forward to making mistakes. Maybe that's sometimes the harder way to learn, but there is no wrong way.
ashwater skydust Just don’t accept the mistakes as normal... That’s stubborn and redundant to learning... Learn now the right way so your mistakes don’t become bad habits.
Do you always have to use your left hand on the in side of the pot I'm in ceramics 1 and we are getting on the wheel right away after winter break is over so if you could please explain anyone thank you
Danielle i absolutely love your videos, but i keep having one problem. I think im using too much pressure from my right hand when pulling and it ends up creating so many wobbles. Is that the reason? How much pressure do you use when you pull?
I find wobbles can happen from collaring too often and if your inside hand and outside hand stay together. Like she said in the video and my teacher told me, the inner hand goes above the outer hand. Adam field did a video on ceramics daily that really helped me: ua-cam.com/video/UDH_QnNNA3k/v-deo.html
Hi.... Please guide me, how do i control cracks in clay object. if there is anything i mix with the clay or any other treatment to stop those cracks, so please guide me. thank you so much.
If it''s at the bottom of the clay pot/bowl you need to use a sponge and compress the bottom of the pot/bowl early in the wheel throwing stage. After you have pulled up once or twice.

I'm a teacher of 40+ years. You are an excellent teacher!!
Your visual and verbal instructions are so spot on!
Thank you Danielle,
You are a great teacher here. I am taking a 6-week pottery class.
I wish we lived in the same city.
You are so good, partly because you don't just say what to do, you explain why to do it. That combined with clear concise dialog does it. Brilliant
Hi this is one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever seen for throwing. Thank you for your time.
Glad it was helpful!

Shimpo/Nidec is my favorite wheel!
Good tips!
Wow!!👌👍❤️
: ) Thank you... everything I make so far IS a bowl. LOL...
Clay lady I have a question- when I’m pulling the clay on the outside that I’m supposed to pull ends up becoming a ring that gets removed once I get to the top. What am I doing wrong?
So great!
Am loving and learning lots from your videos, thanks. Is the wheel you’re using the same as the Shimpo ones behind you ?
I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Yes, I use a Shimpo wheel and I love it!
Personally, I feel like some of us have to make the mistakes before we learn how to fix them. I look forward to making mistakes. Maybe that's sometimes the harder way to learn, but there is no wrong way.

my goal is to make a 12 inched cylinder. right now i’m at about 6 inches. How much clay do you think I should use for 12 inches?
Thank you 😊
I need a hush puppy batter bowl. It is a tiny bowl inside at the top of a large bowl. Do you know where I can find one?
An excellent video! I'd love to know what clay you would recommend
I use my own clay, Clay Lady Clay manufactured for me by Standard Clay. You can purchase it at www.midsouthceramics.com.
Thanks

Thank you but can you also teach us how to trim a cylinder ☺
please please share more videos...
That's how you throw a cylinder. But how do you throw a fit? That's the dilemma I face every time my cylinder starts twisting from too much torque.
ha ha!

Thank you so much, but I do slab sculpture, like high and low relief. So sometime crack starts from top and sometimes from the bottom.
You might try putting saran wrap or some other covering onto the clay while it is drying. Drying the piece more slowly makes it less likely to crack.

You should take that ring off your finger when doing a job like that!
Great video!
