    Also him: No we don't tell the manager is laid off, we tell other employees that the manager leave for a personal reason.

      That's what business are nowdays... there are no guarantees whatsoever.. it starts with the culture from GM in the 80's and copied to any Fortune 500 Companies and now in Asia.... well.. it's all always about math... it means if you are expenses, you are disposable item for the company now days... that's what it's..

      I don't get why anyone would lie about them getting layoff. Getting layoff is nothing bad, getting fired on the otherhand is something you should never lie about and if you're honest about it some company would actually give you a second chance to work with them just for being honest and true.

      @@marinekong235 Yes a company may lie, and that means it has an integrity issue. Knowing that fact, you should make everyone aware and you should be ready to leave when the time is right. In other words, you can choose to leave as well.

      It’s probably why some companies are changing titles from HR to People operations.
      I worked as a global talent partner for a few years and a recruiter. All “HR” teams were considered people teams.

      I once made a mistake trusting an HR about the problem in my company but words got way to the head of HR and then head of division, thanks to him. And no, don't do more than you are instructed if you sense something wrong within your company. Do the bare minimum & go home, avoid office drama.

      Not only that. It seems job loyalty died the day HR departments were invented. Because their existence provided a crucial buffer between management and their workers, which they could then more easily just see as digits on a sheet to balance out like a perfectly rational math equation.

      @@Nelsonwmj When my father was still in the corporate world 20 years ago, there was no HR Department.
      The function of taking care of the employees well being was under the Personnel department.
      Restore the Personnel department.

      Funny how HR expected integrity, while at the same time they don't exactly value honesty from candidates and from their own employees. Funny again because companies are often lying about the jobdesc & employment contracts.

    Don't be loyal to your company. You can also "lay off" your employer. Follow your what is good for you, money, same as every company will do about you.

    HR man dislikes an applicant lying about being laid off.
    But HR man or HR LIES about not telling ahead or giving enough certain time for employees to get another job.
    HR man discusses layoff as part of management measure to save like $1,000,000 million. Sure. Right.
    But HR man should change layoff announcement to earlier stage since its initial action. Coz 1 month lay off grace period is not applicable to all or enough to all to get another job.
    How about submitting these changes to Labor Law?
    Applies to all countries.

      There's some truth to this, I've seen scenarios where sales dept has to undergo cost cutting measures but HR personnels are continuously getting promoted and still entitled to hold large annual events when other depts have to scale down.

    Companies dont have compassion.. be it rain or shine.. good or bad economy.. always constantly be on a hunt for jobs and passively apply.. you never know what can happen tomorrow

      Don't go for a job at multinationals or big public companies.
      Look for a job at a privately owned company. The owner may not be able to pay you that much. But there you more often meet bosses who take pride in their company, and feel responsibility for company and staff.

      Treat working for a company as a business transaction with yourself as a business. You are selling them your service for monetary reward.
      Your first mistake would be to think of your company as your parents who have been taking care of you since young.
      Think positively and in the shoes of the business and as a business and you will go far.
      You will never hear successful CEOs complain about their companies when they were just at entry level. They see themselves as someone higher... Who takes charge of their own life. Not children.

      @@krollpeterThat might be fine when economy is good. When I left my previous company, they asked me to work part time for them. They were small. When economy get worst this year, they closed their business and everyone got let go.
      Basically you are willing to get pay less for some love and stability in small company. But stability may not be realistic. When company need to save costs to survive, lay off is one way. Small companies have less funding to survive bad economy

      Not only that, but it doesn't matter how much you've done for the company in the past, or if your past work is worth a lot more than your past pay, as soon as you are no longer useful enough in their eyes to justify your salary that's it. For example, did you hear about the woman who donated an organ to her boss at a car dealership and saved her life? She needed a few days to rest after donating that organ. Her boss fired her when she asked! Imagine firing someone who just saved your life. I guess she figured she already got the organ she needed, why do anything in return if no one can take her kidney back? I just could never do that.

      LMAO, I also left a comment about that. Honesty and integrity are two different things. Lack of honesty is always present, in fact it is important for interpersonal relationships and maybe a skillset for some professions. That is why I don't like HR, they are usually very political, contradictory, hypocrite and think they are smart.

    So, laying off employees at the lower level as part of a cost cutting measure...
    How about...
    Reducing the huge annual bonuses those CEO's, COO's, CFO's etc receive at the higher management level? These top management people are far removed from the situation at the bottom line; simply because "it is not me, therefore not for me to care".
    I do believe that there are HR personnel who are empathetic enough to support & encourage outgoing employees during the layoff transition. But in my 18 years of being in the labour force, I have learned that HR is "never your friend", and the irresponsible HR types can go as far in gaslighting employees; by telling them they are not of value to the company.

      If you hire a worse CEO, how is that going to help the company? By your logic, a mega-MNC on the Fortune 500 should not implement layoffs, but instead pay the CEO just 1 million. After all, 1 million salary is plenty of money, right? There is no need to pay more compensation

      @@John_Smith_86 People at higher management can afford to take a pay cut without having to worry about not being able to pay for basic necessities, food, bills, daily expenses. The workers affected by the layoffs are in a far more precarious position.

    3 key things to remember are: (1) All companies look at their bottom line & profit margin. That’s their top priority (2) No company will feel indebted to their staff. Neither will they be loyal to their staff! U are only a pawn and only useful to the company if u r bringing in profit for the company. (3) U r not indispensable. U can be replace with other cheaper cost staff hungry for a job.

    A responsible company will try not to over hire and get rid of unproductive workers immediately instead of letting them drain the company's financial resources and not contributing to the bottom line. It's better to have a lean and high performing team than to have a large staff strength with many leeches hanging around.

    He is talking fluffy bla bla. Certainly companies will look into who they think is most dispensable. Of course older people, those with more medical leave, etc., they will be first to go.
    Secondly, if you leave this kind of number crunchers in responsibility for too long, I guarantee your company will disappear from the market. Been there, seen that.

      Actually it depends on how big the company in question is. If the company is small or middle size? Sure, you can look into who is dispensible or how take more medical leaves, those as reasons. If the company is huge, cherry-picking each individual takes too much effort and don't help the bottom line much. They are cutting in batches and projects. Plus in huge companies, insurance payout is already paid out one lump sum. So issues like medical leaves don't contribute as much.

    My company does not provide pantry snacks at all lol. The most we have in the pantry is a basin, (plain) water dispenser, fridge and microwave. Because they know we are poorly paid and need to store and heat up food from home. My company don't lay off employees. They have toxic upper and middle management and toxic unfavourable practices to force employees to leave.

    it's complete denial to say layoff decisions have absolutely nothing to do with the person. We are not 3 years old. There has to be strategic consideration about WHO you choose to remain in the company to take things forward.

      Not really when so many layoffs are driven by cost cutting concerns. Which in turn are driven by quarterly earning calls and public scrutiny especially if a company is publicly traded on the stock market.
      Can survive to produce a good enough Qx earning, who cares what staff with what experience gets retained in the end?

      Not always true. As an example: you can be one of the best performers in a project, but your ass is first on the chopping block when they do workforce reductions simply because you're a contractor and not an FTE.
      If you think all layoffs are driven by merit, you're naive.

      LOL no. Where do you even hear this or is this just an assumption of yours? Fired and laid off are two different things. Sometimes it's just cutting whole departments because the company does not want to pursue this product. Or just letting go everyone who was recently hired in the last year because they overhired and went over budget. Sometimes it's completely random since the order is to cut head count by 20%. The fact Twitter has to rehire mission critical people back at double the price. When they're in a rush to make the next quarter report look good they just do it quickly. When you're cutting costs quickly you don't have time to evaluate 1000s of employees.

    I have been impacted by an company I have loved working with.
    As part of the wider HR (not doing the firing but working on other functions), lets say that even HR professionals are also gravely impacted by this.
    Layoffs sometimes are a reflection of overhire and not planning ahead, and if lesson learnt, can prevent many heartbreaks down the line.
    In times like these, its also a timely reminder to focus more on "You". Are you investing in yourself everyday? are you doing what you can to improve yourself?
    Truth be told, when layoffs happen, it happens, you cannot guarantee it wont happen to you a few times throughout your career.
    Gone are the days you expect good employers to do whatever they can to keep you, because in truth, unlike previous generations, you will move on in a few years or even less than that.
    So I guess, in a certain extend, it goes both ways.

      Laying off someone can have detrimental impacts not only directly on the person you are laying off, but also indirectly to their family.
      As an example, my father was working in a company in Belgium and we moved in because everything seemed to be going well, but by the middle of the year layoffs happened, and since my father was only allowed to work for the company abroad, we had to pack all of our things and move back as quickly as possible before we ran out of money and savings.
      That's not all, do you remember that I stated that they did this in the middle of the year? Yeah, well it turns out that they layed him off just at the beginning of June, what this meant was that I couldn't finish the school year, which was in a special class designed for people who were still learning french, but we were still learning current high school maths and english and other classes.
      Now guess what? Because I wasn't able to finish the year, I didn't have a report card we could bring with us, and thus when we moved back to Spain, they didn't have records of me and said: "You didn't complete this year, you have 0 in everything, feel free to repeat every single class by yourself in 2 weeks time for the extraordinary exams"
      And thus, because it was only 2 weeks of prep for an entire school year, we decided to not do anything and they kept me in the current grade, even though grade wise I have never failed and the high school average for me resulted in being around 7.5 by the end of it.
      To be honest, I don't know who was more cruel in this situation, the HR department for laying off my father who immigrated to the country with us, or Spain for having an educational system so inept that they can't get records from another European country of me studying and doing well in Belgium.

    Lol, I used to predict these for the coworker layoff timing betting pool.
    Go on the meeting calendar tool. Schedule a meeting with all the local managers and one ups to get the grid of when they are available in the month for the meeting at 9am.
    Looks for meeting block outs involving them all that begin well before the working day, last until noon and then out of the office (maybe) for the rest of the day.
    Bingo!

      No you should look at the job opportunity itself, the current stability of the company and the potential for layoffs in the role - not past because its not always bad management. Lots of lay-offs are cyclical and usually the result of an unexpected downturn in the market. The company making it through the downturn is good for the remaining employees.

    Regardless of how much a company talks about integrity, the P&C nature of layoffs always means the process is extremely opaque for whatever reason right or wrong. There's just no point in arguing or demanding justification, coz being retrospective will only screw you up in your head. It's always better to put all your energy into moving forward, to look ahead, discuss compensation and get what you need to secure your next job i.e. letter of recommendation from your boss etc.
    In the end, loyalty to an employer is pointless. You should always be loyal only to your own skills and professional development - that's the only real insurance you can ever have.

    They want to know if you were laid off because it gives them additional data to negotiate a lower salary. Its like asking what your previous salary was. That's why many states are making it illegal to ask that. They should make it illegal to ask anything that isnt related to your qualifications. It has nothing to do with integrity. Everyone has a right to compete for a fair salary without someone trying to take advantage of your personal financial status. These millionaire executives lie every day, and the have the nerve to judge you while trying to cheat you out of a few thousand dollars.

    Not lying about being laid off will cost yourself more harm than good. Sure you'll get the job but definitely the HR will lowball your salary than your last. Never EVER go full honest with your HR since the company themselves are never always honest with you anyways. It's good CNA didn't disclose this guy's face because for sure his house will be burnt down if his identity were to be public.

    I was once accused of 'absent' by HR,lucky i have a good colleague that can testify and cctv proof that i was indeed inside office the time n date she (HR) said i was absent.Turn out,she didn't update the thumb print code,and mine have two diff.thumb code.She asked me to come in her desk and started to talk about being absent and thus my salary will be cut.HR can be villain.

    what about if you say you are impacted by layoff then the company start to low ball you cause they know you are desperate for job. i think such qns should not be asked cause layoff doesn't reflect the candidate's skillsets.

    Remember that this guy is speaking from the pov of HR giving advice to make their lives easier. Never volunteer layoff information. When interviewers asked if I was laid off, I always reply "does it matter?" Or "I don't like the connotations and baggage that come with that question. I can give you references and you can go check yourself." even though I wasn't laid off. I didn't lie, and I offered an avenue for them to verify, while also telling them I'm probably not joining because it's an inhumane redundant question. Kicking people when they are down. The fact of the matter is that, companies DO indeed filter out people who were laid off. That's the dirty secret they don't tell you. Because there are thousands and thousands of applicants, why hire one who was laid off potentially because of performance issues? It's more trouble to vet if they were laid off randomly or performance based, best to just prioritise those who are confident enough to resign during a layoff. I'm quoting an actual recruiter here.
    Do not trust what this man says. It's terrible advice.

    In the US, depending the state that you live in, you may have vacation and sick time earn and tracked separately. In a layoff, some states will not allow you to get paid out of your sick time and/or vacation time. I would suggest that if you are in a iffy situation, find out what the rules are within your state. Also, your employer might tell you that you can by health insurance during the transition (COBRA) but it is super expensive. If you or your family have a preexisting condition, you want to do your research first....

    I was a manager (Fortune 100 firm) that had to select and give the news to my staff that they have been selected for layoff. It stinks. However, I always encourage my team to learn new skills or learn new type of skills (public speaking, reading contracts...) so that they are more well rounded. You never know what experience and skills you have that would catch the eye of your next manager....

    What happens is that, if the process will be humane, one has to be aware that their position might become redundant for several reasons. This happened not only to me but a plethora of folks.
    Bear in mind that:
    - have a side hustle
    - keep an open eye for other positions
    - never stop studying and get more qualifications
    - be the first to dump the company or else...

    To me this is just wrong, I believe HR’s main job should be ensuring we are adequately staffed and not nose into our style of working or be worried about the cost cutting measures.
    In fact, the EMPLOYEES should have full say of how much the top level MANAGEMENT is ALLOWED to be paid salary or otherwise and should require a 95% vote to approve ANY bonus which must be CLEARLY documented with SPECIFIC REASON. I’d guarantee the company will save money many times over and be able to pay all employees easily 5-10x the current salary.

      however, the reality is not what u said. In fact, company lay off will be even more frequent because of inflation. Let me tell u this: this is not the inflation wave back in 07/08, this time around is even worse and companies especially IT companies are completely being hit very hard in this wave of inflation

      @@johnlau6749 ……and many can pay their top level management hundreds of millions of dollars when they can’t even pay the LOWEST paid employee $50 an hour (which should be the absolute minimum even with foreign employees and failure to do so is either the sale of company assets and imprisonment of top management or bankruptcy)

    Two issues with this:
    1. Some companies specifically won't take people that have been laid off.
    2. If they know it does put you in somewhat of a detrimental situation when negotiating salary.

    At my job. I was able to tell: They don't look at your loyalty or good performance and other good abilities and qualifications.... THEY DONT LOOK AT THAT! Instead, they look at THE COST you are to them. They are typically concerned about having to pay higher wages to those I mentioned. Older folks are a concern for the company as well. (Even through they are more reliable in terms of work experience). The concern is when employees want health insurance through the company. That's VERY expensive apparently.
    I feel I was one of about 100 people laid off based on how expensive I am to keep. I'm older (53) and have health insurance for me and my wife.
    Despite how dependable I am in my job, have plenty of knowledge and qualifications. I was still picked out

    One question: If you are laid off and you mention that in your interview, will that not affect your compensation ? You are at vulnerable stage in your life and the interviewer knows it now. Will they not take advantage of it and give you a low ball offer ?

    In Malaysia, a lot of MNCs are currently opening a hub instead of opening a production plant which to me is saddening. It just shows that they are trying to find an alternative to get low cost but high skill talent, which sums up the situation here in this country. Professionals are being underpaid.

    If only all managers do their job, we don't need HRs to do large scale lay-off at all. Small scale lay-off, the normal "you're fired" during 1-on-1 should be enough. Good managers should be able to manage their resources and teams effectively to cut costs and/or bring profits. If the team failed to reach target consecutitvely, so the company needs a large lay-off, then the problem is on the manager(s). The management should be the one that take the responsibility first. Including the Cs and the VPs.

    good thing we have Labor laws in place that you cannot just lay people off. Its more expensive to have a labor suit than to lay people off. not perfect but basing it from the HR specialist the reason wont cut it with our laws.
