Honestly i would say two things about that:
1. he would hurt his reputation more than he would probably gain back with it. He just would suddenly be the guy "fighting free speech and the media", which has more resources to win that fight anyway and then hurt him even more. He also was longer in the spotlight with negative association as every talk about him was connected to the negative statements. Such an effect is called reproduction. He would reprduce the negatitivty and only make it stronger with such an action.
2. I would instead go and utilize my niceness and the reputation i have of being the nicest guy you could think of and turn it into a weapon. Yeah i said it. He could use it as a weapon to fight these "reporters and outlets" to gain an advantage. Now, this sounds evil i know but in reality it is not.
He said that gizmodo destroyed the charity of him selling his sweater for 10k dollar to gift it to a homeless institution. Why not confront them with that? He could use his relation to that charity and institution, have them actually move to the gizmodo offices and confront them with the fact ofwhat they have done.
And i can assure you, if planned well and pulled off in the right way, they would feel so ashamed, so feared that this would get public attention and could literally destroy their whole news company, that they would never do such a thing again and will try to do some research in future.
Such strategies are the hardest to pull of and have a chance of failing. But the profit you gain from such an action is much better than anything you would gain through a legal fight, as you would not only win some money and an excuse, but you wouldchange the whole attitude of a company.
And even more, he could gain a new ally in future. A news company convinced he actually IS a nice guy, would A: look twice before reporting negative stuff and dig deeper into these stories and find proof of it not being true and B: push out more positive news about him, maybe even defending him against other outlets.
The strongest resource are relationships.
