He still has the best selling album till this day. No it was not just his dancing talent, but songs like Thriller, Beat it, etc. Maybe when you look at his entire catalogue he has more "average" songs than great ones but he has more bangers than probably 99% of artists. His most hit songs are the most popular songs in history.

Nobody cares about Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey, Madonna, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga have a combined of maybe 2 bangers between them if I'm being charitable, it's actually impressive they've been able to sing as a career, just terrible across the board. MJ has alot of bangers, but also alot of really bad songs. Whitney is fine, def not top 5 ever, maybe top 100 but just doesn't have any of good songs despite a nice voice.
