I don't know what it is about the actress Joan Crawford, but I find her so incredibly fascinating. Her life, her movie roles, her personal troubles... just fascinating.
The exact date of her birth is unrecorded. The majority view is that she was born in either 1904 or 1905 in San Antonio, Texas. Her tombstone says 1908. Some sources place her birth as late as 1909. This uncertainty only serves to heighten her allure. Who was she?
What people don't understand about Joan is she was literally Always in character!!! She's not phoney at all.She was a perfectionist and a image person. She was very careful with her words, facial expressions and body language because she was trying to give off a perfect image to her fans.Yes she should have been more down to earth but I think she was just living up to being Joan Crawford! She knew she was a huge star and she was a private person so in public she just gave people what they wanted and that's Joan Crawford.
She came across fake! Very fake. If you think she had a beautiful voice, you must also believe Roseanne Barr has a beautiful voice. Joan was a great actress, but she came across stiff in interviews.
My! How utterly possessive Joan is of this young actress. She literally can't seem to remove her hands from this young piece of flesh! Mommie Dearest, indeed!
I think she's grabbing her only because Joan Crawford was TERRIFIED of "performing" live; television, theater, etc. She was really only at home on a movie set, not audience to see you make mistakes.
David R Well, I wouldn't say she was grabbing her. The word "caressing" comes to mind. Granted, she does give the appearance of being rather uncomfortable. I think Peter Glen makes a valid point.
Keda Miles LMAO yeah, while she was in London nervously talking to a reporter in a live TV interview (which according to Crawford and everyone who knew her, was terrifying to her) you were able to somehow divine that she was actually thinking, "I hope they don't find out that I'm bipolar!". Brilliant!

I think it’s sad that Joan did not fully realize how talented she was. Her performance in Mildred Pierce alone (not to mention all of her other wonderful performances) is phenomenal … one of the very greatest performances in film. It seems she felt like she needed her beauty, the glamour, the grace and poise to justify her stature as a movie star. I love Joan for all the things she embodied, but I love her most for her acting ability. ❤
The reason Joan was like that with the young actress was becs she was hyper aware that with the introduction if the young actress, the attention of viewers would shift logically even for a few minutes. Crawford could not abide that so she did this extremely artificial choreography with her arms and hands and strange intense ravenous eye focus on the young woman so that the audience would be mesmerized by Joan even during the young girls intro. Hence the only thing people would remember in the interview was joan.
Helen Hayes said "Joan tried to be everything to everyone but she never should have tried to be a mother." Joan literally knew everyone in Hollywood and not just Hollywood but in all reaches of show business and not just actors but directors, producers, makeup artists, costumers, lighting experts and musicians. She in fact had a lovely operative voice and made a recording with a great opera singer who was a friend. Joan came from nothing and authored her own life, mistakes and all.

Because of "Mommie Dearest" the real Joan has been obscured. She was a strong person who survived a terrible childhood, she was ambitious and decisive and a workhorse. But I know people who knew her and worked with her and they said she was a terrific friend, loved Christmas and giving gifts, and was very funny. Made mistakes with the first two kids surely but learned from her mistakes I think. She had no model on how to be a good mother and both she and the first two kids suffered for it.
A strong person doesn't control and ABUSE children. Narcissists are definitely not strong they are weak, insecure, controlling FAKE people. If she was actually a strong person she would have never adopted children from the beginning for her own selfish reasons. Her kids are strong for surviving that crap. Please don't give props to a toxic person they definitely don't deserve it.
@@jamescadzow9545 But why only "narcissistic" mental illness is used to define Joan? Everywhere I see the same word. And to be honest, I think that of all the mental illnesses she had (such as double personality or bipolarity), narcissism is the least seen in her. She liked to be the center of attention in front of people because she came from an extremely poor family, it is not something critical. And narcissism np makes a person aggressive but other illnesses yes and I do not judge child abuse. But I think it was all exaggerated (which Christina herself recognized) and there is worse child abuse in today's family that we all know already. It was the first book of child abuse and destroyed Joan because the world at that time could not imagine such a mother and Christina knew how to take advantage of it.
It did. And for a number or reasons. Indulge me as I know this is a two year old original comment. Joan was trained to speak in a transcontinental accent. Not British, but also not "brutish" American. When faced with a proper English accent, this can be intimidating (FYI this host was exaggerating his accent as well). I could go on but I don't feel like it. Tldr: she was trying to do it right and knew people were looking.
She had a fear of losing her place in show business. The fear that someone younger would be more appealing to the movie industry than she was. You can tell when he asks her about the youth in the beginning. She pointed out, "We wanna be here too." "We" represented the more mature and seasoned actors/actresses That's why you see the control she had over the actress that came out last. It's almost if she (Joan) told her what to say and what not to say. As strong as she was, she we was intimidated by the younger actresses.
Joan's companion in life was her dog. She always had a poodle. It slept on her bad. She could be frosty with people. Two weeks before she passed away, she gave the dog away. She knew that the dog was never going to try and stab her in the back. She had survived all the back stabbers with the poodle at her side.
I'm surprised with her ocd about cleanliness, that she would allow dogs in her life. Dogs are messy & can be smelly and uncontrollable lol. I love my dog though and the extra work is tolerable.

That interview, apparently, was used to promote Joan Crawford's upcoming film, The Story of Esther Costello, released in early or mid-1957, and co-starring Heather Sears as the central character who is deaf and blind due to an explosion in her childhood. Crawford played the girl's benefactor.
An argument is the last thing I am looking for. She was a facinating actress. Thankyou for your comments. Watching her films one wonders what she was really like in her private life. Her decipline was remarkable. She would be thrilled if she knew people were still talking about her.

By holding her hands... Joan knew this. The younger girl has to answer questions in the interview without the full ability of be able to express herself with body language. Which would make her seem more grandeur and over shadow Joan. For goodness sakes, He asks her "about her pantomiming," and she hesitates...then talks about having to learn to communicate with her eyes and hands and less with her words. Also, Joan is interrupting her and helping her answer questions. Pulling her in close when she is talking to him. She totally was threatened by this young lady and was making sure she did not get her own spot light, and if that camera zoomed in .... she wanted to makes sure she would still be in the shot. This interview was interesting. JC comes off as extremely hungry for the spotlight. She starts off the interview portraying a shy modest woman... and then as soon as that girl enters the room... she becomes domineering. It was weird.
+lasirenas1 You are 100% correct. I think she was acting bizarrely/thirsty here because she was 52 years old, just past her prime. A "pretty young thing" in those days was always a threat to the screen actresses of the Golden Age. The Hollywood studio system was breaking down in the 50's, and Crawford, Bette Davis, and Kate Hepburn were referred to as "box office poison" by the 1950's. She knew her career was reaching its peak.
When considering Crawford a monster, you should sit down and read TEN books and discover the many "shades" of a woman who tried desperately to stay on top...................Selfish? yes.........even megalomaniac........EVIL??..........Noooooo................deep down inside Joan was no better or worse than you and I...........
Reminds me of customer who held on long and tight to a handshake. She said her mom had died. So she kept holding on as if for dear life. I think she was very close to her.
You're right. Joan was from a different era when non conformity was hot gossip paticularly if you were a big star like she was. I have absolutely no issues with her bi sexuality and believe she was ultra cool in the way she expressed her sexuality. I just saw this clip of her with the younger actress and it confirmed all the old gossip about her. That's all. Thankyou for all the feedback.
Jed Linnen WTF ? what a load of crap ! lol she wasnt a bisexual u imbecile she was just being nice to that young girl Joan was a lovely person and very affectionate to those that she appreciated THAT doesnt make her a bloody bisexual LOL I repeat YOU are an IMBECILE ...and pathetic !
***** I agree totally with your comment GOOD for you for having common sense !! unlike that imbecile Jed Linnen ....( what kind of name is that anyway ? probably a BISEXUAL one LOL what an idiot he is )
I agree. I'm a lesbian and I don't see her behavior lesbian like. I honestly think Crawford is just off in general and the way she's touching her seems more to control and manipulate - that's not true caring; nobody expresses love/care/lust in a blatant manner like that.
Seeing Joan in a film recently, Johny Guitar, a weatern that was overlooked when she made it, one realises what an amazing actress she was. I am not interested in her private life.
I've got to hand it to Joan for being such a great sport! Few celebrities took tv very seriously in those days. They saw it as B grade cinema. The actress from Esther Costello is nice too.
Joan did this all of the time. When Rita Moreno won her oscar for West Side Story she said there was this mad rush of camera flashes and then suddenly a tight hand on her forearm and she was yanked into a back room, door closed and it was Joan.
Rather creepy, odd video! Reminded me of "oh granny, what big teeth you've got - all the better to eat you with my dear!" The t5hing about Joan Crawford is that there is something v fascinating about her, but what that something is is rather hard to define.
I have seen many interviews of Joan and she has never said a rude or nasty word. About anyone. Yet you read the comments and people depict her as a Disney villain.
she's not going to talk bad about anyone in an interview. like everyone she had her demons. the only problem i can see is professionally she had an issue with younger female competition - she will not be upstaged.
@@haintedhouse2990 Well many other people have. I think when someone is bad they can’t truly hide it. You will see its vestige. Yet Joan is always sweet and gracious.

What was so attractive about Joan that some ppl think? I can not see it....
lalaboo grey Joan was very beautiful in her younger years in the 1920s-1930s and she was a great actress. Google Joan Crawford George Hurrell photos.
@@luciverdad4834 beautiful eyes. Beautiful in movie THE UNKNOWN
@@janetlieb2507 the eyes of a psychopath lol
They were labelled box office poison in the late 1930s, not the 1950s.
Joan Crawford was everything we have come to know about her since her death, a monster.
When considering Crawford a monster, you should sit down and read TEN books and discover the many "shades" of a woman who tried desperately to stay on top...................Selfish? yes.........even megalomaniac........EVIL??..........Noooooo................deep down inside Joan was no better or worse than you and I...........
Oh please Lasirenas1 grow up!
watch out heather, joan has that adoptin' look in her eye!
Reminds me of customer who held on long and tight to a handshake. She said her mom had died. So she kept holding on as if for dear life. I think she was very close to her.
the way Joan was stroking Heathers hand etc there must have been "something " there
Nerves
Joan the best! EVER
***** I agree totally with your comment GOOD for you for having common sense !! unlike that imbecile Jed Linnen ....( what kind of name is that anyway ? probably a BISEXUAL one LOL what an idiot he is )
I agree with EVERYTHING you said ...PEACE and much love to you and urs
I agree. I'm a lesbian and I don't see her behavior lesbian like. I honestly think Crawford is just off in general and the way she's touching her seems more to control and manipulate - that's not true caring; nobody expresses love/care/lust in a blatant manner like that.
+Angelina Haworth u haven't done the research. type Marilyn Monroe josm Crawford and then natbara stanwyc. JC had litsvof girlfriends
Seeing Joan in a film recently, Johny Guitar, a weatern that was overlooked when she made it, one realises what an amazing actress she was. I am not interested in her private life.
nod. Her in RAIN and THE UNKNON.
Same here. I don't care if she was "evil", like they say. Although I do not feel that "Joan Crawford" and "evil" belong in the same sentence.
What a Woman ! wow, If only if only i could have met a woman like THAT !
The power of the mother,,,,,incredible....
Yes!
Jessica lange nailed it!
i love Jessica Lange but she looked nothing like Joan.
I've got to hand it to Joan for being such a great sport! Few celebrities took tv very seriously in those days. They saw it as B grade cinema. The actress from Esther Costello is nice too.
💜
Wow 66 years old !
Crawford was “on” 24/7 right til the end .
Guys remember this was her first interview on camera. She didn't know what she was doing lol
❤❤❤❤
Wow that was odd.
Joan did this all of the time. When Rita Moreno won her oscar for West Side Story she said there was this mad rush of camera flashes and then suddenly a tight hand on her forearm and she was yanked into a back room, door closed and it was Joan.
Rather creepy, odd video! Reminded me of "oh granny, what big teeth you've got - all the better to eat you with my dear!" The t5hing about Joan Crawford is that there is something v fascinating about her, but what that something is is rather hard to define.
she was a psychopath. you could see it in her eyes.
She seems so tense!
Because she's straight.
Why the nasty comments, she is just being endearing and sweet.
It just seems odd how she's looking at her and holding onto her
JOAN AND BETTE DAVIES THE QUEENS OF HOLLYWOOD
Damn! Joan got the big bouquet.
@@mattheww239 i love Joan Crawford and her work. she had a bad case of stagefright which is why she couldn't do theatre and even in interviews i can't help but think she's struggling. for those who prefer the earthiness of Bette Davis of course Joan's gonna sound a tad affected. doesn't matter cause i've got an extended library of her great work to choose from.
Haha when the young girl came out I couldn't help but say 'what've they done to her waist!?'
My god this woman was a maniac. I could see the fear in the eyes of the younger actress as Joan clutched her with an iron grip. Utterly bizarre.
she was a psychopath for sure.
She’s a little too touchy feely with the younger actress
Yeah.like shes in love
It's called being friendly. 🙄
it was a different time....she can sense her nervousness...its called empathy
