- This is a how-to video about removing a mouthpiece that is very stuck. The video shows a trumpet mouthpiece being pulled, but the repair is the same for any brass instrument.
Here is a link to where you can buy a Bobcat Mouthpiece Puller:

As someone who has a small growing collection of trumpets and will be helping teach others.... I forsee a need for this in the future. I personally have never had a mouthpiece get stuck..... yet. I had been eyeing the device you showed. I'm convinced now. Thank you! Very informative.
Lucky! I’ve gotten mine stuck like.. gosh 18/19 times!! *thanks to my band director for helping me get it out*
Thank you very much for the thorough problem solving- finally got the mouthpiece off!
Have been asked few times to remove mouth piece with device, haven’t experienced need of additional use of pliers. However I noted it is always required to take time when using the mouthpiece remover to secure clamping at receiver as it can slip and damage lacquer.
Although he got it out, the difficulty he was having was due to the puller he was using. The Bobcat is commonly found in many school band rooms and many repair shops. It will work about 90% of the time. However if there is a very, very stuck mouthpiece than the shop will need a Thompson mouthpiece puller. They are much stronger and keeps constant pressure all around the shank of the mouthpiece receiver not just a few points as seen here.
Once you get the mouthpiece or slide unstuck, how do you clean up the pieces before you reassemble them?
Mouthpieces do not get stuck because they are dirty but because they are wedged in. Because of this, you just need to clean a mouthpiece that was stuck the same way you would clean any mouthpiece.
I did a video on cleaning tuning slides after you get them unstuck. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/Lim6l5GmPaQ/v-deo.html

Once the puller is tightened as far as you can my hand, can you tap the mouthpiece with a small mallet to break corrosion loose?
You can try it. It probably will not work, but it will not hurt anything.
I’m a little confused. Does the end of the puller go on the actual receiver of the instrument or the backbone of the mouthpiece?
The two black pieces of metal at the end of the puller go around the end of the mouthpiece and they make contact with the trumpet at the end of the receiver.
So you just need to keep tightening the screws till it comes out?
yes
Mine is so stuck it bent that thing
If you would like, you can send it to me and I will see if I can get it out.
i dont have time to get all that stuff
Don't you mean how to use a mouthpiece puller that I don't have?
