Relatable and engaging. Nothing wrong with going unscripted. I've been struggling with motivation lately, blaming it on the damp, dull conditions we are blessed with in the UK. I'm sorry to say that's translated into following my favourite creators too. (Sorry I'll get caught up! 😄) On a plus side, having used many of the things I've learned from you, I've started finding myself taking pictures I'd like framed. Have you any recommendations on decent UK printers and how to format exports from lightroom. (Maybe a video idea?) Thank you for what you're doing mate. It's helped me no end. 👌
Just binged your entire channel over this last week! Love your content, it's so chill and laid back. The photography advice is all amazing and I've learned so much. You inspired me to get out to my local park and get some pics and I've had a great time. Thanks man, keep making these great videos :)
All of your videos are great! I say just make videos that you like and feel comfortable with and we will watch and learn from them. I enjoy your grounded style and how you do not make it about trends and what gear is hot at the moment. You show that anyone can start, learn and grow as a photographer with "normal" gear. Thanks for sharing your time and thoughts with us.
Yes, please keep doing unscripted videos like this. I can't be alone in getting bored with the "bigger" UA-cam photography channels. There's too much slickly produced content from places I'll never go telling me not to make mistakes I'd never dream of making anyway. I can thoroughly relate to this video - it's my lived experience... scouting in poor conditions, hopefully laying the foundations for success later in the year. Keep up up the good work! 👍
Regarding your question: it's your channel! You do want you want. :) I mean, if your primary goal is to generate some income and entertain the viewers, then fine, I think, I prefer unscripted videos, because I can see my own struggles in your videos, and your solutions, which gives me inspiration. (See second part of my comment.) On the other hand, I also find your tutorial-like videos very useful; and probably your most beautiful shots are getting showcased in those type of videos. If monetization is just a second thought and your primary reason for making videos is just enjoying your hobby, then really, just do want you feel like to do. No need to stick to one particular style in my opinion. Regarding the content of the video: man, I feel your pain. As the weather is starting to get tolerable, I restarted cycling, and I wanted to try my new zoom lens. I've found myself in the exact same situation: everything is ugly and muddy and dead. Still managed to take some pictures, but... as you put it, "not gonna win an award" lol. But It's really inspirational how you can still manage to find little things, even like a bird-box that I would've totally ignored.
Just caught time to watch my fav video vlogs after a long pause from moving house. And this video Joshua sticks out by far. It’s just as it is for me when I am out in my very rare spare time with the camera, no light, no fog, no descent locations at times. Real life photography, what a joy to see some one show how it is. Thankyou 👍🏼👏🏼
I like all sorts of your videos Joshua, just do what you like and we will absolutely pick up your tips and tricks! Thank you for that mate! 👍🤘Greetz Marco.
I've done a lot of scouting through the winter, as I was on the road for work. iPhone + PhotoPills... it's all nice and geotagged and labeled on a map. I even found a good Milky Way spot with a nice subject. I won't be traveling through there again for at least 6 months, but I'll be ready when it's time for a trip.
There's a place for both scripted and unscripted. They both have their lessons to be learned. Our unscripted days can be when we learn, when we grow, the most, and when we can chart where the future can lead us. And being reminded of the unscripted break, can cause one to actually think, a little more, or a little more often, rather than just plodding on.
Your video today helps normalize a very important aspect of photography - and that is quite helpful to all of us. What I look for is that each video, this one included, gets in and makes the point and then concludes, respecting the viewers time.
I appreciate your openness about struggling to find opportunities for good picture taking. Scouting for potential in days to come is a great idea. I love this unscripted view! Keep up the good work!
It may have been unscripted, but it was thought provoking. This time of year is challenging and as someone new to photography compositions are difficult. But the one thing I took away was the need to scout more areas, which i admit I don't do a lot of. I've now got a scouting mission planned for Sunday and it may be great or a wash out. i will know on Sunday. Keep up the good work Joshua.
Hi, from the Netherlands and thank you for providing us with quality content everytime. I fully relate to the bad weather and when you add that to the flat environment everywhere, it makes landscape photography a bit harder. Yet anytime I go out, I never plan my path or the pictures that I will take. It's wonderful to see that you are doing the same and I fully support it, think many more will as well. I even had an idea of how to implement that into the channel, namely making it as series or video log (like day 1,2,3 and so on). Keed up the amazing work! Looking forward to it!
i really like both, the scripted approach teaches me things in a relatable and authentic way but i also like following reality and process of a photographer i look up to. Both feel authentic and i think thats what gives your channel appeal
Josh, you have to do what you want to do. Things are more watchable if the person making them enjoys what they do. With regards to not feeling as you've given anything to viewers in this video - you certainly have given something. You have shown both the importance of scouting and geotagging, but more than that you have shown that not every photoshoot is full of amazing photos. The latter is great for newer photographers like myself as it shows we're not alone, and that we do not need to feel disheartened by a bad photo day. As always though, great video and I look forward to more. 😊
I like the unscripted approach, it makes a more real feel and I tend to be more interested as it feels more like a chat about photography rather than a lecture on it. Almost like we’ve gone for a bit of a walk together to take photos
I just found your channel. And, as you suggested I also just watched your scripted "Why" video. Based on limited experience I must say I liked both. Mainly because I enjoy your humanistic perspective. You're clearly a talented photographer with an ability to truly share what you enjoy/love about the art as well as what frustrates you, and I'm guessing everything in between. Keep doing what you're doing while BEing who you are.
I've never scripted a single one of my videos. I usually sound like a babbling idiot, but at this point, its part of (what I hope is described as) my charm.
Joshua, you're absolutely right that beautiful photos depend heavily on the conditions. I sometimes only take photos for documentary purposes. Then it doesn't matter whether the light and colours are beautiful or rather ugly. For the scenes that I want to have a beautiful "picture" of, I no longer make myself a slave to the conditions. I have decided for myself to use photos there only as a blueprint, so to speak, and to work more on the composition than to hunt for good light and colours. Here I take a photo only as a starting point for the next step: editing it heavily in Lightroom and/or Luminar Neo - and I then don't regard the result as an alienation of reality, but rather as a work of art or a kind of „painting“. What do you think?
I really enjoy your photography, and your perspective on it. We all know that if you're lucky, maybe 1 outing out of 10 puts you in the "Right Place at the Right Time." We have to learn to accept the less successful along with the successful. Sure, we all like to see some beautiful shots, but the reality is that we don't always get them. Photography is hit and miss, but if you don't swing the bat you'll never get that Home Run Shot.
I normally know the area I am going to but what I am looking for is whatever I come across, I like the way you come across and your honesty, just be you.
I like it as it is the real thing what we go through when we are out on a shoot. Flat light? Find something with some contrast like that path and try a Black and White. Use a script if reviewing equipment but for the field, I love the unscripted!
Just do what you want to do. Interested viewers will get what they get from it. You might not even know what they pick up from just the hanging out. I watch because I like your work. It inspires me. But I really suck at photography. And I understand why my Welsh ancestors settled in this area. It looks the same as there. Lol.
I was just saying to myself - I've not seen Joshua videos in a while. So a searching I go ... Yes, this month alone the weather has being terrible and I end out trolling my hard drives of pictures not used and b roll videos.
I’m going to reference a favourite show of mine - Curb Your Enthusiasm - where Larry David has a fairly loose overall idea but no real script - so yeah go for it!
Unscripted for sure! I also just wanted to present an idea based off of something I discovered, macro photography. When the light in boring and the surrounding landscape yield no image opportunities, with macro that opens up so many possibilities. Just a suggestion hope it helps! Love your videos !
If the time and effort going into a video like this is no different than the other type you do, why not mix it up a little. Variety is the spice of life. I like both styles, I can always take something away from a video no matter how it is presented. I say mix it up, make the unscripted stuff a little more chill and just out showing off the area and giving a little nugget of knowledge, but just out enjoying the world. Watching this video has me wanting to head up to northern Wisconsin and hit the woods for some sloppy end of winter hiking and photos.
I enjoy both. Though I tend to prefer unscripted, and I find I gravitate to those kind of channels. An example would be POV vids in places a know I will never get a chance to go to, there are simply to many of them, and I can’t just get up and go, the wife will kill me, and there goes photography (maybe the afterlife provides more opportunities 😂).
Keep the conversational style. It's like walking alongside a mate who also likes to take photographs. You'll never get a million followers but I believe that's tremendous pressure to maintain.
I would detest being in a situation where I was pigeonholed into performing for the sake of the performance. Follow what feels right for you, Joshua. It'll be interesting for us Followers.
I really enjoyed watching this! I think it's very obvious when a video is scripted, and they can get quite boring to watch all of the time. Unscripted videos provide a fresh change to UA-cam.
It is good mate, because it’s exactly what I would do 👍

I love that kind of unscripted video. Thanks a lot! If possible, I think you just have to work on camera stability, focus distance and sound quality. Thanks again.
Unscripted is great. Feels real. Just one criticism: the titles are terrible (not very "searchable", if that's a term). 😁 I understand why you do it though.
Jos, get out and enjoy yourself doing the blogs...from one photographer to another we go out to take photographs when we can we get the fresh air the countryside and the fun of recording history with our cameras... I guess making a blog is a long and most times a pain.... so just carry on with what you are happy with no matter what the location no matter what the weather....unscripted yes because it's you not just someone who is reading a script.... The words come from the heart when you free to say anything on the snips...I like the unscripted more normal for everyone. Great work.
You do you Joshua and I'll just keep enjoying your vids and photos. And yes, in answer to your question, it's enjoyable. Do a scripted video if and when you feel you have something specific you want to say. Otherwise, this is fine by me.
We all have days like that. today I was at Bolam Lake in Northumberland. Was bitterly cold, windy and damp. Did I get any good shots? No. But that isn't the point is it? Photography is a lot like fishing. Sometimes you can be there all day and get nowt. But hey, that's half the fun. The days you do get a good shot more than make up for it. I think you should do both, unscripted and scripted. Keep it real. Cheers Josh.
Unscripted is good - but it still needs some focus - I know this is a tester video but next time just tell us what you are doing and don’t worry about saying it’s unscripted all the time … just get out there and see what you get up to. Hope that helps. Great channel 👍
I like the unscripted style, it allows more flexibility and can take an unplanned course..... It's a shame you don't have more subscribers, your videos show that you don't need to spend silly amounts of money on gear to get nice images. Have you ever thought of trying to do a collaboration video with one of the bigger channels ? (Thomas Heaton, Gary Gough, James Popsys for example) your video's are just as entertaining and it might get some more traffic your way.
Bro, you're pleasant to listen to and spontaneous talking to camera isn't a problem for you, obviously. So go for the unscripted videos and balance them out with some scripted ones. I would like to see an uncripted vid of you doing some street photography.
Yes? Or no?
Relatable and engaging. Nothing wrong with going unscripted. I've been struggling with motivation lately, blaming it on the damp, dull conditions we are blessed with in the UK. I'm sorry to say that's translated into following my favourite creators too. (Sorry I'll get caught up! 😄)

Just do what you want. Maybe sometimes have a scripted vid but if you not in the mood ones like this are very interesting.
Wonderful! Just what happens in real life for us amateurs. Love seeing you do it Joshua.
Ja wohl!! You do you. I'll watch!
Yes!
I personally like the unscripted approach.

I've been dealing with a simliar issue here in Canada with the dull, boring light. Winters a pain sometimes!
Glad I’m not the only one! 😁
Same here, lol.
All of your videos are great! I say just make videos that you like and feel comfortable with and we will watch and learn from them. Thanks Rick 🙏
The adventure is half the fun, the exploring and finding the new things, as much as the photography. Most of my videos are not scripted in any way.
Yes, please keep doing unscripted videos like this. I can't be alone in getting bored with the "bigger" UA-cam photography channels. I enjoy all your videos, you are the one photographer that helps to keep me grounded so just keep them coming, thanks Joshua have a great week.
Thank you William 🙏🏼
We need more grey day photography tips, I am also in the UK. I like the unscripted and unshaven approach.

You look like Shakespeare and Brian Blessed had a baby. It’s excellent - keep it!
Thanks, I’ll take that 😄

Well Josh no script just tell it as you see it. This tends to be less boring and keeps your subscribers. 👌

The shot at 6:21 doesn't suck at all. Might even look a little spooky in black and white with a heavy hand applying contrast.
Maybe a mixture of scripted and unscripted, depending on how the mood takes you.
I like it as it is the real thing what we go through when we are out on a shoot. Flat light? Find something with some contrast like that path and try a Black and White. Use a script if reviewing equipment but for the field, I love the unscripted!

I like this. I find it to be peaceful and relaxing

Yes! Go and explore and the nifty fifty❤ can’t go wrong!
Keep the conversational style. It's like walking alongside a mate who also likes to take photographs. You'll never get a million followers but I believe that's tremendous pressure to maintain.
I like the unscript video. It shows the challenges of photography.
I would detest being in a situation where I was pigeonholed into performing for the sake of the performance.

You should do a zine or little photo book!
I really enjoyed watching this! I think it's very obvious when a video is scripted, and they can get quite boring to watch all of the time. Unscripted videos provide a fresh change to UA-cam.

I'm diggin the unscripted video brother! I like hearing your thought process!
I appreciate that John 😁 I'll keep that in mind for future videos.
I may be 3 months late to answer you, but yes, i definitely think this video is a great idea! Unscripted is usually the most realistic!
I like Ang photography talk. Any!!!!!

Keep it real, be true to yourself and please no £7000 camera reviews👍. I'll be with you throughout your journey.
Thanks Lloyd 🙏
You imposter , what the hell have you done with Josh?
Hi Josh! Definitely unscripted is the way to go. Well, I think so anyway! Every video I've ever made has been unscripted.
Unscripted is good - but it still needs some focus - I know this is a tester video but next time just tell us what you are doing and don’t worry about saying it’s unscripted all the time … just get out there and see what you get up to. Hope that helps. Great channel 👍
Thanks Alex 🙏
I like reality of lives and some tips to offer to audience but keep it below 10 mins. 10 mins more is too much if there is nothing much to learn.
I think unscripted videos often have more character.
I liked it.
Its more "hyggeligt " as we say in Danmark so super 👌
Like the beard. Looks good on you.
Thanks Kenneth 😁
Unscripted is great but some scripted would be nice too… a balance of the two.
Maybe have your points but I say no script.
I like the unscripted style, it allows more flexibility and can take an unplanned course..... Thanks Nigel. I'd love to, but I highly doubt any of them would want to put in the effort required to work with a tiny channel like mine 😅
Nice
I prefer unscripted videos.
And you are right, scripted vids are boring.
Greetings from Lubbock, TX. I enjoy your videos regardless, but I personally like the unscripted approach as my life is very unscripted.
I love these kinds of unscripted videos.

I would like to see an uncripted vid of you doing some street photography.

I’ll bear that in mind. I might bring along a camera man for the scripted ones in future 😜
Unscripted is great 🎉
I make my videos unscripted.
Do the unscripted stuff.
