This is so incredibly true. No one else decides what kind of gear you should get, you still do that yourself. I'm really glad there's someone else who thinks the same way I do. Over the months (since I followed you on UA-cam) I have come to really appreciate your opinion and your way of photography. Long story short, I will continue to follow you for the coming year. Thanks for this vlog.
I love the honesty. I went to join my local club, they asked what camera I had, a Canon 200D, and noses were lifted, "well we don't teach here" was the comment.so I walked out. Joshua you are so right.
Sounds like you did the right thing Ron!
Snobs!
Good for you.
I also joined a photography club but didn't really fit in... What I think I'd rather find is a small group of friends who want to go out and take photos, support each other, and share knowledge in an informal way. Any suggestions on how to create that would be great. Good luck!
This is the best bit of photography advice… a great follow up video I think would be: how to know if something makes you a better photographer. I also appreciate that you show the good and not so good 🤙🏼
Thanks man. Good idea!
The camera takes the picture, but the photographer see's the photograph. Buy one camera and a 35mm0r 50mm lens and learn to use it. Get to know that camera inside out. The camera will not make you abetter photographer as you have to do that.Thank you.
Great video as always. By the way I totally agree with you. It´s always the photographer behind the camera who makes the picture. The good ones as also the bad ones.
My strategy for lenses - is buy cheap ones first e.g. 35mm or a 50mm....then decide if I'll really use them over a zoom or that focal length at all. Then save hard for the L series version :)
Thank you for taking us along and talking us through your process. I so enjoy your videos and always get something from them. Thank you for that. As for the music, it's a character in the movie so to speak.
Joshua, you are so right , you dont need the latest equipment to make amazing photos unless you can afford it, then go ahead and buy the equipment, but if you are not a good photographer no mattercwhat you have youbare going to be a bad photographer, so people go out Iand take picts, practice practice
Your videos are so awesome! Thank you! I find your perspective inspiring and practical.
When we started our UA-cam channel, we used our old iPhones (seriously I have an iPhone 8!) Then, as we got more into the videography, I upgraded to a Canon M50, and I filmed on Auto for a while. Then, last year, I read an article on Bokeh and fixed aperture lenses, started watching inspiring photographers, and upgraded to a Canon R6 with an f/2.8 24-70mm lens and my life changed!! Could I have still progressed with my M50? Probably! But, I have no regrets. The R6, the beast that it is, pushed me to use manual mode in photo and video and I'm hooked! I'm absolutely giddy every time I pick up my camera and film or take photos. Even filming a van build, I now create transitions with photographs of Autumn colors or nature shots. Photography and videography have changed my life! I look at life through a photographer's lens now - what a blessing. If you can't afford a more expensive camera, buy what you can afford - the possibilities are still endless.
That’s great, glad it resonated with you 😁
For me, the question isn't "will this make me a better photographer?" It won't. For me, the question is "is there something I want to do that I could do with this that I can't with what I have now?" One example is the 70-200mm lens I bought last year. I shoot a lot of running races and I found that I wasn't able to get in close enough to the runners with my 24-70, so I bought the 70-200. Now, I could have saved some money and bought the F4 lens instead of the F2.8 lens I did buy, and that would have been fine. But I didn't, because not every decision I make is sensible.
Another good video Joshua,cheers Pete.
I started out with drones - aerial photography and videography. And wanted an affordable setup for a dslr. I got the Canon C850D with its kit lens 18-55. I've now got - 10-18 / 55-250 / 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary - Canon EF-S Fit. I'm happy ........
Similar path that I took! I so enjoy ground based photography!
Thanks Joshua, great thoughts to apply to the craft! I had a boss once tell me, "When you stop learning it is time to retire". I think that applies to our craft in many ways, although I am retired and picking it up again since my days with film.
Your honest advice and warts & all approach is refreshing, interesting and very encouraging.
At some future point it would be great to hear about post processing but I feel I need to spend more time on composition first. Perhaps that’s a mistake because one informs the other?
Anyway thanks again 🎉
Excellent advice 👍🏻
I have spent LOTS of money on gear (because I'm a big kid and like my toys) at the moment I use the Canon R3 and some RF-L lenses BUT my favourite photos ever were taken on my little M5 and inexpensive EF-M lenses
For me, it's not even "the right gear" so much as the gear I have.
Thanks!
Thank you so much Ken 🙏🏼
Gear, does not make, a photographer.
How about Mycophotography?
😄 good one!
