Last year while I was in jail, a white identity guy was telling me and a philipino guy how great Mitt Romney is. When he learned that both of us and every single other person in that space was liberal, all of a sudden he said "Aww, you guys are politicking in prison.". As if he hadnt guessed we initially disliked him for being a known Nazi, he was also unintuitively surprised by our dislike for Mitt Romney. Conservatives are consistently like that, a craving for other peoples empathy while having little to none themselves.

It's a shame because I was swayed by debate, but I don't think that sort of plasticity is present in the conservative mind right now. They've dumped all their efforts into getting their followers to immediately cut their own train of thought the second they receive any pushback, and spent the rest of their time filling them with as much misinfo as possible. I grew up in a red state under conservative parents and was just about the perfect age to be influenced by gamergate when it came around. Outside of that, though, I was pretty disengaged from actual discussion that wasn't using something I cared about as a veil to push propaganda.
Once I took notice of the fact that I kept hearing the words like "leftist" and "marxist" thrown around constantly as derogatory terms and still had no clue what they meant or who these people were, I looked for some info on them and found myself watching, among others, Vaush. At first I did so begrudgingly, but I very quickly realized he exposed so many of the beliefs I held as being built on a foundation of thin air.
Yeah the right for a while now have been banking on purely divide and conquer tactics capturing swing voters while defending their base. Before Joe's debate performance and now the missed shot, I would have said that wouldn't be enough. Now it is.

It used to be that I could discuss things with them and even get them to moderate their positions, or atleast question them until they got back into the fear-mongering right-wing media hellscape anyway, but lately they've been digging their heels in whenever we discuss anything.
It made me feel like they weren't even reading what I was telling then and lo and behold, last time I was discussing Trump's shady connections with one of them he just straight up told me that he didn't actually read my messages because I'd become "such a trump hater," and that the only reason he engaged with me was to "troll." My positions haven't changed, it's conservatives' willingness to entertain disagreement or analyze their own positions at all that has all but disappeared, the radicalisation is very worrying.

Something that actually "won me over" (a.k.a. realizing how deep the rabbit hole actually goes and how evil modern Republican are) was Vaush analyzing rhetoric and debate tactics used by conservatives/fascists/nazis/etc. Pointing out all the nonsense that was just wrapped inside a nice layer of whatever the current culture war topic is, was very interesting to me, but more importantly it helped me understand why supporting left ideas and ideologies is necessary.
In 2016/17 I'd argue that these people just have different opinions or maybe didn't know better.
Now I understand why they deliberately manipulate debates and cherry pick things that can used out of context.
What "won me over" was a single tweet from a back and forth I was reading. The right winger accused the liberal of being anti free speech and pro big brother and suggested they read 1984 to which the liberal said "oh I love George Orwell! He was a brilliant man and my favorite socialist! Along with MLK 😊" Blew my fucking mind.
Back then I thought, "why don't more leftists debate right wingers??! This is their fault I ended up confused!" And now I'm like "why are we debating right wingers?? What a waste of time!"

Online debates aren't supposed to move people over. They're to help teach folks how to address the talking points and arguments of our opponents so they can do it themselves irl with the people who regurgitate those talking points and arguments
Sometimes there's one idea or fact that instantly changes are minds but that's a rare exception. Generally no single thing moves people over by itself. But it can definitely progress it. Whether it's online debates, irl buddy or family member making the same type of points, or something else, even then it won't actually move them over. It will get them questioning these things to themselves and then they will start to see different angles going forward.

How debates tend to go for me:
-Somebody brings up AM/fox complaint, gripe, or what they think passes for (insult based) humor.
-I ask a question so that they may explain or clairfy their position.
-They repeat the same hollow scattered grievence stuff I heard on grandpa's radio for the last 35 years.
-I try to point out real life things that don't fit into talking points or complaints (what I usually hope are more informative or uniting subjects that help point out that we're all in this together).
-They double-back onto campaign talking points (such as, $1.87 gas!!! when tRump was in office cause Biden cut oil production).
-I then point out a fact that I know that contridicts their sloganary talking point (highest oil production in US history during Biden's term).
-They will, WITH ALL THE CONVICTION IN THE WORLD, tell me I'm wrong (No, production was higher under tRump, Biden shut down that pipeline...)
-I sit there knowing that I'm likely right, but they sound quite convincing. I don't wish to undermine my reputation or word by disagreeing without further research, so I foolishly say I'll have to look into that and defer the point. Later I re-research to learn that I was correct, and they are repeating campaign crap.
They needed no research, and do not care if their word or reputation for debating is solid or not. They like what they were told to like, and they will repeat lies even after being informed otherwise, because what they desire outranks logic or facts, and half of what they desire is to believe that they are so smart that they know who to trust, thus trying to inform certain people is to their ears them being told they are foolish or gullible (which of course they are).

Debates are about free schadenfreude and it was nice having some ideal low engagement background listening.
@FelisImpurrator From the very limited amount of debates I watched, that's about the only upside I saw in it. It could be satisfying to hear Vaush just steamroll idiots, though like I'm pretty sure Vaush has said before, it doesn't convince anyone to his side, it just makes people that already agree with him feel good. But even with the smackdowns, Vaush's opponent's were either so cringey or psychotic that I can't take the debates seriously enough to bother watching. Glad to have the debates gone.

As much as I don't like him/watch him anymore, Xanderhal was also good for this.
His coverage of drama and regular news items helps to draw in normie/non-left leaning political viewers into his videos, and helps to build up a bit of a rapport with him before UA-cam ends up pushing his more politically charged videos. And it works! People, like myself, first got into politics UA-cam because of him. And it seems Vaush feels that bump a bit as well, as his self-help/mens help videos tend to do well, attracting that same audience/crowd.
The only difference I would say is that Xanderhal isn't that great of a person, and his political style starts to rub you the wrong way more you learn about politics. Thus he ends up being more of a stepping stone into this space, rather than being an end port for it.

I wouldn’t knock debates too resolutely. It’s true that debates are probably less effective now, as 65% of the republican base is in a MAGA cult, but there are young people in or just out of high school/college who may be moveable, independents who may just be looking to be convinced, and centrists who may be forced from their centrism by a clear enough debate message.
