At an old arcade place I was used to play, it was lose a match = back to stage 1 (because the operator had the ability to continue the game disabled on all possible machines, making games even harder if you have little to no chance to practice a match or later stages without beating the earlier ones... unless you had a NeoGeo memory card, however the operator was way too smart and had only MVS machines WITHOUT the memory card port).

This. Nigga was worse than shao Khan proof being that the game actually allowed for a difficulty modifier(full gauge, boss has less health etc.) in KOF games.
Fun fact: if Rugal has low health and full meter, his Genocide Cutter does 100% damage (instant kill)
