The iron may not have the eye pop of gold and silver, but the historical significantce and insight into these people's lives holds much interest to me.
Great finds!
I'm glad you proved that going after the iron targets could reap a good result. It helps novices like me.
You have the best videos, the quality is what makes it, the camera isn’t being jerked around, scenery is great, music, language, I just can’t say enough good things about them, I love seeing all your finds too.
Thanks so much Wilma!
✨ *(Little hammer, little scissors, little Silver Button, Little Thimble: little Shoemaker)*
Very good analogy.
I was thinking: thimble , scissors, buttons- sewing basket.
Well that Reale was nice but that silver button....amazing, so beautifully engraved, a great find!
Did you see the tiny scratches on the back, somebody worked long and hard to make it.
The piece you call a fire poker (your imagined sword) looks more likely to be a "POT HOOK" for retrieving a cooking pot/kettle from it's place on the fire in the hearth.
Most "pokers" I've seen have a much more pronounced hook on them and yours looks like it is made to hook the thick wire type handles of the period.
I could be wrong, but that one is pretty close to what ours looks like at our camp, only your find is most likely much, much older than ours is.
GREAT VIDEO BTW.......
Dutch ovens were becoming very popular at that time frame. Everyone would have had a lid tool for removing without dumping the coals and ash into the pot. Now if he had found say a salamander (tool for toasting) it would have been very unique. I love when people find these old items.
A lot of fireplaces had a swing arm that was used to position the cooking pot away from the heat in order to just keep it warm .
What you called a folding knife looks to me like it might be a straight razor, but you've handled it - would that make sense to you?
That was my first thought as well.
I also thought it looked like a straight razor. I looked up colonial straight razors and it definitely could be one.
Hey, Mr. Wheeler! Wow, what a small world. I was a custodian at the High School several years ago, talked with you a few times. Good to see you. Mike
From the small hammer, small scissors, thimble, shoe buckles, and buttons, I would say a shoe maker or tailor lived there. Always dig up iron! Lots of cool, old antiques are iron! And, valuable! Love your videos!
ya....a tailor was what I was thinking also...
Absolutely a top notch video! Your photography and the beauty of it is impressive! Not to mention the nature lessons. We enjoy your videos so much more than the others. Thank you Brad.
Thanks so much, Laurie!
But which was the good fiddlehead ??
I. Dig. Every. Thing. You never know. Nice. Finds. 🗡🏹
For sure,I put my pinpointer bck into hole,a strong tone kept me digging,to my surprize a CANNONBALL@ 9.5 lbs.
Yes when in an area where everything is old especially dig every signal
Thanks Brad. Love for you to do a video of your display boxes..On July 6 I'm doing a full display of all my finds in the last 40 years at a historical type day at the WW2 airport here on Dunnville Ontario
Detecting Historical Ontario----that sounds awesome!!!
Hey, that's today! I hope you have fun! I just got my first metal detector and have been out twice with it, digging bottle caps out of local beaches (a recent video on my own channel chronicles my first outing). I'm in the Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge/Guelph area and would love to hear about options for local historical sites if it's not inappropriate to ask a detectorist to divulge some hot spots! Meanwhile I'll definitely check out, and subscribe to, your channel.
@@joshyaks Josh, welcome to the metal detecting community. My first day I dug all trash, bottle caps, pieces of metal, etc. I think it was day 3 I got my first coin in a field, then I found my first ring (on day 3!!!!) a HUGE full 1 ounce silver Bikers ring with an Aztec God on top of a Pyramid! Still my biggest ring find ever! I thought-man this hobby's easy- then I didn't find another ring for almost 2 months, and it took me almost a year to find my first silver coin. Loving every minute of it.
Enjoy your new detector, and I wish you many great finds with it!!!

@@flthunderdigginwrob3162 Thanks, Rob! What an amazing Day 3!
@@joshyaks Josh, if you're talking about our day 3, then thank you very much!!!!
As always, great cinematography, great music, great narration and awesome discoveries. Good job my friend.
Thanks so much!!
Me and Russ pulled 5 folding "clasp" knives from a 1750s British camp...so, yep! Cool find.
I collect knives and have three from the 1700s.
what he called a knife is a straight razor not a knife
Were you able to restore them to any capacity??
Great digging! Another rich site that I hope warrants a return video. There's more stuff there. I have a hammer with a similar small head and was told that it was a shoe cobbler's hammer. Very enjoyable video.
If you keep digging iron targets you will double your finds. Really good video.
Not just swords, but bayonets, trigger & hammer mechanisms & gun-barrels are iron tones. Neat things to find!
I dug a hard signal and it ended up being a buried ford model t riddled with bullet holes lol 😂
Yeah I found it odd he acted surprised to dig iron targets...I could understand it if you are hitting nail after nail (I've had to give up on spots just too much junk). But being out in the woods where most stuff is rusted away that is small and the home was probably log and no nails used man dig away. Why not!
@@Meekerextreme Meeker, I think he usually ignores the iron signals, or tones them out as, with his 2 to 3 hour hikes in to where he goes, and the same hiking out, he has precious little digging time, so he usually concentrates on the mid & high tones!!! Just my guess.
Rob
Especially when at the older sites. You never know what you'll find.
My #1 rule is dig em all. Because if you are digging a pristine site all the targets are an artifact.
Really great location!!
Thanks for sharing it with us!!
Great finds ! I dig iron heck I dig most tones. I found the fork looking piece of the shoe buckle at my last dig. My 1st confirm colonial find!
Awesome, congratulations!!
WHAT a day! Wow. Appreciate the foraging aspects and that beautiful Trillium thank you!
Just found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching. Great job on the research, finds, and videos! You make me want to head to those beautiful Vermont mountains!
Me tooo!
On a sight like that I would dig everything. Because if there isn't any contamination you know everything is a relic. That is a trip back in time that would give you a complete an eye into the life of a colonial household. Especially that one where you know from the items that it was most likely a family or at least a couple. Awesome site and finds. Dig it all is the lesson of that site!!
This is the 3rd video of yours I be watched this morning and I must say that I'm deeply impressed! You've rekindled my desire to get my detector out and get to digging again. I moved to Frankfort, KY. 4 yrs. ago and haven't had my equipment out since. I live on an area that the original family heirs still own dating back to the first settlers in the area. I have permission and just need to get out. Many thanks!
The great what if..... love that button! Scissors, thimble and buttons, a common theme there?
I thought of that too. The hammer seemed like a cobbling tool.
Either a Cobbler's place, or a Furniture Maker's.
Thimble, small scissors, pretty little button. That spells a woman’s sewing items to me. The scissors were small like my embroidery scissors not big enough for cutting leather.
I was thinking of a possible cobbler too. Especially the small hammer
Once you've cleaned the scissors, spray with corrosion x. In a week or two they will probably move with no damage.
Not a button but one half of a silver colonial cufflink. I have found a similar shape/design intact.
This video was so interesting! I love all the random things you found. Can't wait til I can get my own metal detector! I love old things with a story. Even if I don't know the story.
lol. sounds like me too. only i usualy make stories up about it in my head. just imagine if, type stuff.
@@marypatten9655 yes, exactly! I love it!
I think the folding knife could actually be a shaving razor!
Shoe buckles, a tack hammer, and a thimble. Perhaps you found the remains of a cobblers shop
Scisors too
I have an idea....Just a thought...Ad the phrase "let's keep going" to your T-shirts. with a pic of you walking away from the camera swinging a detector. I think that would be cool. Maybe the shot about 13.20m in to your video...love watching them , by the way. Thanks for doing what you do.
A silver button would be a good way to hide your wealth from thieves if you had to pass through a rough neighborhood.
At last, somebody using a squirter bottle! I wondered why nobody used one and now you have. Great!
You found some very nice relics and coins. I always look forward to your videos.
Hi Brad. Great hunt mate! I think what you think is a silver button is a part of a 1700's silver cuff-link. Pretty Cool ;)
Thanks so much!
You are so lucky to have access to such cool places. Great video as usual.
Has all the makings of a tailor, scissors, thimble. buttons, buckles and tack hammers. :)
Or a shoe maker. That hammer would be an adequate size hammer for tacking heals.

Cobbler.
Great finds Brad, looks like you found someones old sewing box contents, very cool, could that old folding knife perhaps be a shaving razor? well done brad cant wait for the next one ;>)
That's why some say. Dig all your targets! I can smell the silver thimble coming! LoL good finds bud!
Dont think it's a poker, they used that for pulling up the lids on pots when their hot, and pulling up on the handles of the pots to move them around.
Summer these big foot long salamanders.would crawl out of the floor.different colors.
Shoe buckle? Keep digging, you might find the person it belonged to!
I thought the same thing, when he pulled 1 fragment, whole buckle, button, coin. Bone should be next item
I am pretty sure there are bones there somewhere but also could be a tailor/shoe maker place.
@@whatkenyan7684 good point
Yes
@@whatkenyan7684 That's what I kept thinking. Maybe the local shoe maker and seamstress lived there. : )
I was glad to get my notification of your video 😀
That cellar is a treasure trove of surprises. Another great video.
I am another who would love for you to do a foraging from the land video 👍 I've heard that fiddleheads are really tasty, I didn't know there was more than one version 🤷 one good and one not so much. That alone was good to find out. 👍
ALWAYS dig iron targets: there are amazing items!
My brother lived in northern Illinois. His basement floor had big wide cracks in the
I try to avoid surprises in the hole.
No sir....
Don’t like surprises.
Just wondering if the folding knife might have been a folding straight razor.
Wow that coins was minted the year my house was built in NH
Greetz from Belgium🇧🇪 Still watching Your great video's 👍
Yes to edible plants. Awesome finds. Now go back to all the places you've been lol. Keep hunting for your sword Brad.
@14:38 You found it..a button to a bullet bra, they had buttons back then and not hook and eye..lol.just teasing..
Make a video showing your collection I would love to see everything you've found
WOW Brad, Targets that sound 50/50 Good and Iron over here in the UK are silver coins. You should go back to all of your old sites and re-detect them. I don't know why they sound like that but they just do. That small silver button could be from a Naval dress jacket or waist coat
The button your calling a compass may just be a Viking button?
That was my first thought as well..
Great looking finds as always Brad. Congrats on the Half Reale... did you consider that your 'silver button' may actually be half of a cuff link? - Dave
I would return to the places you have dug before now that you know what you know. Heck ya!
Silver button could be one half of a cufflink similar to a find I made here in the UK
Right you are!

I really love your work, Brad. Have been following you for years. Most enjoyable! Thank you!
I grew up with my father being very big into metal detecting. When you are in what is now just land, no buildings showing we always dug every sound, why not? It doesn't take long and you find some good stuff. When you are being picky then you are skipping a lot of items. Obviously all those items show a very lived in home in the mountains probably for a few generations at least. That whole area would probably be great to metal detect in not just where you think the house may have been.
I know iron targets are everywhere with nails and all but I always wondered on colonial sites why you never dug them. I suppose this now provides you with many new adventures to share as you peruse through your old hunt lists and re- hunt the ones you remember as being pure colonial . Good for all of us especially us that live our lives vicariously through you!
Every time you find silver, you say "I was expecting iron."
Awesome finds Brad! I have yet to find an intact shoe buckle, so needless to say, I'm jealous lol. The "silver button" is part of a colonial silver cufflink
the thimble, small hammer, scissors and multiple buckles suggest possibly a cobbler or boot makers tools, just a guess.
That's what I was thinking.
Just to say the 1/2 real was minted in Mexico (oM)
Looks like that button came off a woman's dress.
I thought you found a tricorder from the title of this vid.
Great hunt today Brad. Well done on the cool finds. I would love to see how some of these items clean up and how you display them. That might be an idea for a future video. :)
Great find with the Reale Brad and awesome other relics mate :)) I was out with a group last week and a couple of the guys hung around the cellar hole digging everything and they may have found 100 nails but they also cleaned up with the finds, it changed the way I hunt in the future for sure :))
R U KIDDING ME ? HE HAS NEVER DUG IRON TARGETS BEFORE ! RELIKS and Coins Eco as Iron sometimes.
Very fuckin true pal if in doubt dig it out xx
Awesome finds! A ton of our good finds rang up horrible, never know lol. So glad your going to pound the ground adirondacks!!
Heck yeah, see you there!
Great video. You gave me some hope when digging iron. Thanks, Brad!
As always another great video. I enjoy listening to your knowledge of the woods and the things that grow/live there. As a kid in Ont., Can. a friends mom took us to the woods to hunt for Fiddleheads. I don't remember her letting us eat them though. Great finds and love how you share your knowledge on everything. TFS!
1st rule of metal detecting: Fill your holes. 2nd rule if metal detecting: Dig every signal. Great video!
Who thumbs down these great vids?
The 17:05 button looks Spanish.
One of the other MD episode I started watching said "this is why we dig iron" good luck in the future finds. 🇦🇺
Vigorous horse riding would shed coins, shoe buckles, etc.
Rethinking digging more iron targets!
Brad, you do a great job with your videos. It’s not just swing a coil and dig a target video, you make it interesting and personal. Great finds, would love to find a shoe buckle.
JUST DIG ALL SIGNALS !!!!!!!!!!!!
You should continue to work that area, those artifacts are not the things that are normally thrown away.
That silver coin had great value in the late 1780's.
amazing, you and the land owner are likely the first people to be at that sight in over 200 years. top it off with those terrific finds, definately a very good day. congrats!
Amazing finds huh lol. I’m so glad that your now checking those metal places. I have watched a many treasure videos and you would not believe all the coins that were found just by checking every hit they got. I’m real happy for you discovering this and I hope this is the start of finding loads of great things for you. I have enjoyed your videos and I have joined your channel cause I like the way you explain things and your interesting and of course I love watching you find stuff! See you on the next video. Stay safe and God bless you.
I desperately want to metal detect, i'd love to know how to get started.. i live in West Virginia and I know there are many places here i could dig... Any suggestions would be awesome!
Brad how do you find your research ? Maps of old home sites etc ? I’m down in Florida but have land in Alabama and I want to see if their are any good detecting sites on my property
6:45 is a 1/2 real Carlos the III, looked like 1780, a very nice find for VT/NH areas. Hoover Boys find them down in MD with somewhat regularity. Kurt, the lead of that group has found a 1/2r. 1r, 2r and I think a 4r but no 8 yet. He is looking tho. He did find one of his bucket list Indian heads, 1877, that was a nice coin. Keep on detecting.
Moral of story: DIG IRON CHIRPS!
You need to get a High Frequency Coil if its all iron infested or .. Dig it all :-) The Reale is awesome, great find. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome silver brad! Curious about your max settings ringing those up as iron...if in doubt...dig it out!
Brad,
i started and always used a 1968 metal detector. It wasn't a discriminator. SO, i dug EVERYTHING. And man i gotta tell ya, i found more good stuff than anybody. Cause you remove a horeshoe and viola, thers an old coiin underneath.
This is one of my favorite videos of GMMD.
SUPER video and finds! It's amazing what you'll find when you change things up at times. I'm VERY sure that you will be revisiting sights again soon digging the low tones.
Awesome video & yeah go back and revisit places : see sometimes things aren’t what they seem😉 great stuff. Love your channel , thanx for posting
Just curious and you may have been ask this question. Did you check the you found the spanish coin was in for iron? Maybe the iron was masking the silver tone. Congratulations on your other finds especially the shoe buckle and knife. Until next time GL&HH *Chris*
7:00 Those things seem to turn up in a place that you least expect, I found my reale coin, in the same manner! out in the middle of nowhere woods near nails. Congrats! i remember watching that detectorists lady, Digger Dawn out in the UK, saying something about her Garrett sounding crappy in silver coins as well! makes you wonder, how many others have you missed because of that bad tone!
You have probably heard/watched of the Hoover Boys that metal detect. They did it all and things you think are junk turn out to be good finds, dig it all!
Got to love the unexpected finds! Congrats on finding the half Reale and that octagonal silver button! Sweet... 🎧
Really great video. You've got to dig it all... I'm thinking though, you should get a Deus. For someone who puts in so much time and effort, perhaps you need to get a 'better' machine.... just a thought.
Also I forgot to add that my Dad had a farm/homestead in Wells and when I was a youngster, found an Indian Head penny on the "Carriage Path" in front of the early 1700's house, I became hooked on coins and collect them to this day !
Would LOVE to find a reale. I have one on a necklace from the 1715 fleet but was bought. I thought that may be a straight razor not a knife. Could be a cobbler's hammer maybe. Incredible silver button. All very nice finds, some whoda thought. HH
first off trusting your metal detector tones 100% is a mistake, second not digging a target is a mistake and here why, myself and my dad(R.I.P.) were detecting an old farmstead here in montana we were finding old square nails and cobbler tools(like the little hammer head you found), lots of old jar lids and wire rotted tin and buckets and I got frustrated from digging so much and not finding any coinage or buttons, I hit a really sweet signal and bug about a foot down and found the rusted bottom of a rusted/rotten bucket and started filling the hole back and my dad got pissed, told me if I wasn't gonna dig my targets just quit, anyhow he finished digging out the bucket and under/inside it was 3 blue glass jars with lids on inside those jars was $73.13 of old coins 1879 to 1935 and some old debt and cattle sale receipts from a bank in great falls, Mt(dates 1908-1921), my dad was completely right from then on i've dug every target, and would have missed hundreds of finds, it might take a little more work but I would have never found an old trunk buried under a burnt down cabin,,, cavalry dress coat(rotted terrible) 18 buttons still on it, belt and sword with scabbard, knee high boots, full body long johns, and 2 cigar style boxes bullet mold and some spent lead round balls, a silver flower charm necklace a lapel pin in a smaller box with a tobacco pouch with 1.36 oz of gold in them and some misc. needles thread 2 silver thimbles and a bunch of bone needles ...my point being dig all your targets you could be missing a huge payday ;)
less talk more do.
Seems like maybe this guy was a cobbler or tailer or both....
