That is a waist belt plate from a soldier in the 53rd Regiment of Foot, mustered in 1755. Very cool find sir.

You may have found the remains of one of a soldier from the British 53rd Regiment who led Indian raiders of the infamous “Royalton Raid” of 1780. Brilliant.

It blows my mind the stuff you find that would most likely never be found if you weren't out there digging. Great job and great video. Can't wait for the next one. I've only recently found your channel so I'm watching all that I can. I was wondering about bears when you mentioned your Glock. The woods are wonderful, you can almost see Mohawks and Abenaki and Mohicans tracking their enemies!
The 53rd eventually became the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry and,I believe, remain as the 3rd Battalion The Light Infantry. Incidentally, the museum of this old regiment was blown up by the IRA in 1992 when it was located in Shrewsbury Castle which was built in 1070 or so. It was a very, very easy target with no serving soldiers within miles.
I enjoy your videos very much indeed as I am nuts about American history and to see Colonial material being dug up is very exiting!

@@GMMD we just watched this last night finally and I have to say, that is an incredible dream find. I could tell it was a Rev War plate the minute it got into your hand. Haven't seen many and have never dug one. Forwarded your video to my Relic hunting buddy this morning. We've been digging Colonial and Rev War sites here in Northern Virginia since the mid-90s and other than a few British Rev War buttons and even one USA Continental Army button, that's been about it. To find a plate, and a marked plate from the Revolutionary War is a phenomenal find! Now that is a find that would be hard to ever top! Congratulations! Watching your video of it being dug was the next best thing to finding one myself.

Green Mountain Metal Detecting Interesting question, and good answer by DHO. I’m in rural Ohio and often wonder why people would simply abandon so many of the possessions in general. I’d think a bunch of poor farmers would keep their brass candlesticks and pewter spoons if they moved out!

    • @unrulyjulie4382
      @unrulyjulie4382 6 років тому +2

Ty Kendrick ... I have wondered about the spoons as well. I would think for people living in conditions such as those, any possession would be very important. Even a spoon that had broken would be mended.

That buckle brings up the age old question. How did it get there? Did it belong to a turncoat? Did the person just decide to stay rather than return to Britain? Was it a trophy from a battle? You have to love the mystery!! Great video and thanks for inspiring me to think about the history of the Rev War. Well done.

I'm not up to speed on the independence wars but it may be worth asking the question of whether there were raids carried out in the local area. This regiment was formed of guys from North England and had seen alot of action in many other battles it could be that they were used due to being veterans who had seen action and as such may be toughened enough to carry out the cowardly raids along with the native people.

The ax head was in good shape. That was a major loss. Tears were shed over it.
I have been meaning to ask: How long were the coins in circulation? Did they get worn smooth in pockets, or in the ground?
How much was a penny worth back then? I remember Ben Franklin bought several loaves of french bread with a few pennies, and Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer bought a loaf of bread with a penny. Keep in mind that food was a MUCH larger portion of the cost of living (cost in $$ or labor) than it is now, and discretionary income/time was minimal. People worked from sunup till sundown, then went home to get ready for the next day. Forty hour week wasn't till after 1850.

I love your videos. I have been binge watching since yesterday.. I own a house that was built in 1829. You gave me insensitive to get digging. OMG the things I have found. Years ago after a bought the house.. ok over 30 years ago. I buried a treasure under the floor. It will stay there till someone else finds it. I had a porch fire last winter. The house got a lot of water damage. So I am rebuilding and saving the house. The things I have found in the walls.. crazy. I put them in metal containers. Put them back in the walls as I remodeled. For the next people to find as well. Thank God I was able to save this place. It is amazing how it was built. I grew up doing construction. So I know what I am doing. I also still own the property that the lumber came off of to originally build the house as well as the mill. It still works. Very noisy. But my family built this old house. I am proud to be the one saving it!

Gotta love a Friday GMMD video! I have Friday's off of work and usually start my day working on my 1966 Beetle. I then take a break and turn on this weeks GMMD video. What a relaxing time seeing you find such great finds! I wish Canada had the history as yours - or maybe not - but it sure would make metal detecting a heck of a lot more interesting. :)

Congrats, you have found the remains of one of the soldiers that my ancestor Thompson Patch is credited to have shot. It was a running ambush style battle between his regiment and the green mountain boys.

Metal detecting has very few days like that one. Bet you can't wait to go back there again.

Thanks for the link, Brad! That was a fantastic video, and brought back fond memories of my finding a similar French belt plate on a Napoleonic battlefield in Germany. I wish there were smart phones back in those days so I could have recorded my finds the way you are able to do nowadays. Are there any more videos of you hunting again at the same site? Given your fantastic finds, if it were me, I would have combed that area many, many more times! Were any of the buttons from the site regimentally marked as well? Given how deep the buckle seemed to be, perhaps that was an actual trash pit and there could be deeper finds. Because of the difficulty of repairing the belt plate in the field, it was probably deliberately discarded there once it was broken. Spurs and shoe buckles like you found there are sometimes indicative of a now forgotten trail that may have had considerable traffic 250 years ago, and could lead to another military camp or Native site of the period. I have found over one hundred Medieval spurs and triple that amount of Medieval horseshoes in Germany by discovering lost roadways of 500 to 1000 years ago that back then were traversed by thousands of people who would occasionally lose a spur or horseshoe which over the centuries would amount to quite a few of these kinds of artifacts once you start detecting roadways that no one has ever searched before. Coins, knives, and even swords are occasionally found too, falling out of sheathes and pouches when galloping their horses, and becoming lost under the leaves.

It’s amazing to think of the people that walked there before you. I love your videos!

Awesome hunt,Brad! Coins in excellent condition, spur, working shoe buckle and that incredible "53" buckle! ( I wonder if that could be the owner's name on the back - if so that would make it even more incredible ). Congratulations! Here's to even more incredible finds! PS: Very nice art work at the beginning! Your's?

Thanks Joe! The other known 53 buckles all have the same name, so I suspect it's a makers mark. My friend do it, he's great!

Nice finds. Never knew about the New England Treasure Show until I saw your ad the other day. Almost made it there, I was in the area for something unrelated but the timing was off. Maybe next time, I know it's out there. Frank from CT

See - knew that was a good spot - the finds really are in remarkably good condition - not turned up by the plow (obviously & broken by that) or even moved much thru' logging, they just seem to be as dropped hundreds of years ago - so I'm betting there IS more to be found! Nice little spur as well and the buckles were FAB. Gotta go back! 👍
