  • 📜 History of WWI: The Christmas Truce, Part 1
On Christmas Eve in 1914, soldiers in the trenches sang together across the wastes of No Man's Land. Some were brave enough to step out of their trenches and meet face-to-face, forming an unofficial truce that lasted (with a few blemishes) until the end of Christmas Day.

British soldiers only spent 7 days in the trenches then rotated back to rest areas, then to training, preparation for being back in the line and then another week in the line.
When they were in the rear areas the army liked to keep them occupied so musical concerts, boxing matches and football matches with other units were regularly organised.
Its part of why British units didnt have the morale problems seen in other armies.
There would be a lot of deflated footballs hanging round ready for the next rest period in a British army unit.

Honestly best thing that coulda happened to him since its probably the only reason he lived.
A RIDICULOUS number of the originally deployed troops did NOT survive the remaining years of the war.
Most of the WW1 survivors were made up of troops who weren't even deployed until the twilight of the fighting.
Remember the men who made this truce still had four whole years of war left to see, so not many of them made it.

It's just such a sweet reminder that we are all so much more alike than we even realize. Not only to other people in our world today, but to the people of the past too. I'm getting an MA in history and honestly, the greatest takeaway I've had throughout all my research and coursework in the last nine years is that people in the past are just like us. They wanted the same things that we want: love, family, community, freedom, security, to find their talents and purpose. It's easy to forget that and focus on the differences, but things like this remind us

These guys were just kids. Most didn’t even want to fight, and I’d imagine that a lot didn’t even know why they were fighting at all.
To me and to many, this is one of the most -human- events in history. Really shows that most humans just want to live in peace, but instead most things are made unnecessarily complicated and violent by those in positions of power.

WWI was killing on an industrial scale. Friends were encouraged to join up together and be in the same regiment. That sometimes meant that a small town lost their entire population of young men as they got killed together in the same battle. The young women were left without any young men to marry. It was absolutely tragic and horrific all around.

The British soldiers shot the German soldier while returning to his cover it was a sad day for him and ended up sneaking out of the ditch and returning home in Britain because he had been shot

Check out the sequence where the men begin shouting holiday greetings, in jest at first but then resulting in one of the men taking those first steps into no man's land. The looks on each of the three faces in the sequence are telling and evocative of what they each are thinking, when they are thinking it.

When the Nivelle Offensive failed, the French were near a breaking point, due to loses and the nature of the war itself. With men being ordered to charge machine guns, unrest was inevitable. Only other French units stopping the mutinies and the Americans declaring war on Germany prevented disaster.

WW1 started because everyone was building up their militaries, taking over other countries, and had so much pride (nationalism) in their own countries.
Also, the assassination of Arch duke Franz Ferdinand.
Also also, the countries made alliances with each other so it was like
      * *We declare war on you*
_ *Well if you declare war on him, then you declare war on me*
      * * *Oh yeah? Well if you declare war on her, then you declare war on us too!*
And it just kept going, like a domino affect, until the whole world was involved in the war.

Hardly anyone accounts for resistance and casualties. Supply lines are thought of but it's mainly focused on the advance. Casualties only come in to thought when the graveyards start getting full unfortunately. Sometimes it can be prodding to get a feel for the enemy as well. My main point is centralized planning= fuckery
