Solo Kayak Duck Hunting A Public Land Marsh (GIVEAWAY)

- Snow, high wind, and a public land marsh that was loaded with ducks made for the perfect scenario to send out the 2022 MN duck hunting season on a high note. Despite the treacherous conditions I was determined get out for a solo kayak duck hunt on an open water pocket where I had seen piles of mallards and teal a few days before. I setup in a protected corner of the marsh and before long the birds started dumping in, but they weren't quite centering up like I needed them to. After a quick adjustment of the kayak things really picked up though and before long I was limited out on ducks and waiting for a flight of geese. Hope you enjoy!

Your kayak hunting videos are the best hoke I don’t know why but it’s seems like every time you hunt in one you have killer luck! Keep these amazing hunts coming!
Thanks brother! Seems like the kayak has been my lucky charm these last couple seasons. Hopefully there will be quite a few more layout hunts before the season is over!
@@HokeOutdoors can’t wait to see them if there is and they for sure are your lucky charm the proof is there! Lol
The double edged sword of the upper Midwest. This was one of those flyover migration years. Just as things start heating up, a hard cold front moves in and away go the birds. But it happens and hopefully next year, we will get lucky and the winter will set in much more slowly. Very cool hunt. All the best.
It was truly eye opening for me to see how quickly the migration progressed up here this season! My experience with the migration in VA has always been more of a trickle so this was completely new for me. Something to learn from though and hopefully I'll be better prepared for next season if the freeze up comes suddenly again
Fun to watch I do a lot of the same style hunting. Also from MN snow in the kayak is always my favorite
There's something magical about a midwest snow hunt!
My favorite winter days....ghostly gray overcast is great. What an awesome day and place to hunt and good shootin.
There sure is something special about those dark gray mornings, seems like the birds move better and are always more willing to decoy!
Really like your videos. The main reason I hunt ducks and upland birds is to work my dogs. They are, mostly, such a joy to have with you.
Thanks Steve! What kind of dogs do you have?
The old dog is a Springer Spaniel and the young dog is a Springer/Black Lab cross.
Another great episode Thomas. Love your kayak duck hunting episodes. Keep up the great work pal.
Thanks Maurice! Gonna be a week or two until I've got any more waterfowl stuff but got some other kinds of hunting content coming soon!
That was a good hunt once you got closer enjoyed it Thomas
Thanks Chuck! Making those little moves really seems to pay dividends some days
You know we love your videos. No matter solo or with your crew. We really are impressed with all your adventures over the years and how far you have come. Can’t wait for you to hunt with us and eat a great meal at our home. Colby’s from New Mexico support as always!!❤️❤️🦆🦆🦆🦆
Thanks buddy, sorry that I'm just now seeing this! I can't wait to make it down there!
I also like your kayak hunting videos, thanks Thomas. I can't wait for news about a dog?!You're right hunting with a dog makes all hunts special.
There's no doubt that it adds an element of companionship that's hard to go without once you've had a taste!
Solo Kayak duck hunting? What? How fun. Look forward to watching all these...!
Man I started kayak hunting cause your videos it has been a game changer not much birds in sc but the yak makes it that much easier to get to them your videos are killer man keep it up
Thanks brother! Hope you get on them in SC this season! What kind of birds do you mainly see down there?
@@HokeOutdoors whole lotta wood ducks our wmas haven’t been getting the care they need a lot of food is gone due to poor management and lake draining plus impoundments all over the place our bird numbers have dropped to almost 0 within the last few yrs
Beautiful cattail marsh and a nice bag!!!! Great adjustment moving the kayak....so hard to shoot right out of them!!!
Thanks brother! Wish I would've setup in that second spot to begin with but better late then never!
Really enjoyed the kayak hunt. Thanks for the contest, great prize package.
I appreciate it! The kayak definitely adds a special element to these kinds of hunts!
Good call on the move and fixing your hide. And I agree on the black duck decoys, they have great contrast. I keep some to this day, but I believe all blacks I have now are cork.
It definitely made an immediate difference, certainly worth the effort and time spent. I'd love to get some cork black ducks to add to my spread one day too!
Mr. Hoke, thank you for your wonderful videos. I, like you, am passionate about my time afield and get out at every chance. To see you go about your hunting business is a true pleasure. Additionally, watching you travel throughout our country to hunt new regions is a treat too. Continue being you because you do it so well. Finally, I actually look forward to your no nonsense videos. Regards, Edward
Thanks Edward! I appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to watch my videos! Hopefully I'll be able to keep the content coming the rest of the season and I don't have any plans of changing it
@@HokeOutdoors I live in Arkansas so feel free to ping me if you need anything.
Always enjoy your content and info on kayak hunting; keep rockin’ it Thomas!!!
Thanks buddy! I appreciate you watching!
Love the water swats! We all love the splat that a big drake makes when he hits the water dead, but sometimes shaking off the skunk is a good thing.
I have an idea- T-shirts and hats "Team Water Swat" or maybe "Sluicemasters" I'd be in.
Thank you for calling them what they are, Canada geese. (not Canadian geese like so many people who should know better call them)
Thanks brother! My main thought on the topic is that they all taste the same whether they're shot off the water or out of the air. I love those t-shirt/hat ideas too! I'm a little too busy to get started on any new projects at the moment but that's something I could tackle this off-season!
Another outstanding Hunt! Those days are a Waterfowlers dream!! I wouldn't give up so early, even after a good freeze open water and birds can be found, just need to put in the time to find them, and once you do, 6-8 decoys in those small pot holes will pay off big time. Black Duck Decoys are fine any time I would bet there are some in Minnesota, but the Mallards will hang with Black Ducks without hesitation so I wouldn't change a thing there. Getting a Dog?? Nothing better for a serious Waterfowler to have, good Companions in the off season too!! Try and get out at least once more after that freeze if you can, but also keep safety in mind.
Unforuntately everything is so shallow up here that it pretty much all froze at once since we got a big load of snow along with the sharp drop in temperatures. I tried to find a pocket of birds holding out but the few I found would've been too dangerous to try to hunt by myself and Cory was out of town for the week of the freeze up unfortunately
Great point on the black ducks. We do the same with coots here in Louisiana on cloudy days. Seems to work well with the darker contrast. Enjoyed the video as usual. Stay safe!
Very cool to hear! Do many other groups in your area use coot decoys as well or are y'all ahead of the curve with that? I'd like to get some for my spread as well, plenty of them around in MN during the first couple weeks of the season up here!
@HokeOutdoors some of us "older" guys know the efficiency of them. Alot of the younger guys bypass them on the shelves at the stores. Even my son that is in the videos with me, he is 13 and I made a believer out of him. Lol. Love the content. We enjoy watching
I was cheering for you when that mallard came like 5 yards from your face haha beautiful spot and great video as always
Thanks Chris! It would've been pretty heart breaking if I had blown that opportunity!
Keep up the amazing content 👍👍👍
I appreciate it!
3:25 you even hit some feathers, what an unlucky shot
I'm pretty sure that was duck poop actually. At that close of range I would've blown something off or put a hole in it if I had hit it
Always love the new vids, keep um' coming!!!
Thanks brother! More stuff coming real soon!
New subscriber here! I started following you because I’m interested in trying duck hunting, specifically from a kayak. I appreciate all the knowledge you’ve shared and your entertaining videos!
I appreciate you subscribing and that's awesome that you're looking at getting into waterfowling too! I'm by no means any kind of expert in it but I hope my mistakes and successes give you a base for where to start and what to avoid. It may be tough depending on where you're from, but if it's possible, I would highly recommend trying to find a mentor who will join you on some hunts during your first season. There's a lot of nuances in duck hunting that are tough to convey through a video and are better taught first hand
Great hunt! Looks like a fantastic place
Thanks Fritz!
The only issue I saw was your spinners were locked too tight into the veg. The only time I’ve ever seen that work was when they were in food but never with cattails. I’d push them 15 yards off the veg so birds in all directions can key them.
Absolutely spot on, it definitely didn't look natural. Unfortunately I didn't have any long mojo poles and with as mucky as the bottom was that was the only spot I could get them to hold
I enjoy watching your videos more than any others I live in NC and like to hunt in the marsh and wood duck hunting
I appreciate it! How as the November split for you down there?
Super hunt! Love that ducky weather 😍
I love how the ducks always fly in when a guy is distracted ie changing the baterie on a camera 😂
Duck hunting in a nutshell, if you're not ready that's when they're going to come in
Nice!!!
Love your content man, keep it up
Thanks brother! Might be a week or two before I've got anymore waterfowl stuff but got some upland and coyote hunting videos coming soon!
Very nice hunt... good work
Thanks Kraig!
I love the hunts. I have a dog and they help a lot. Especially on the cripples
Thanks Brayden! How was the November split down in NC?
@@HokeOutdoors it was alright wasn’t that many birds but hopefully it gets better
Great videos , was wondering what the settings you have your go pro set at to capture these shots . Thanks
Your videos are amazing, very satisfying. What camera do you use in your shotgun? Greetings from Mexicali, Mexico.
Thank you very much! I'm using a ShotKam on my gun
Great hunt Thomas keep them coming
Thanks Antonio!
Good job young man. Still enjoyed watching your video.
Thanks Cooper! I appreciate you watching them!
I must say that these solo hunts are my favorite however I must also admit that I am a bit scare to try them myself, on marsh that I go to the mud is sticky and soft, any recommendations on safety? Thanks
This video is so good
Love your videos I just got a go-pro 6 what settings do you use for you go pros? thanks keep the videos coming.
Awesome footage. This makes me want to get a kayak for duck hunting. What’s your preferred length for stable shooting?
I appreciate it! I would say 12 foot length and 30 inches wide will have enough stability. It's definitely worth getting out during the summer though and practicing shooting out of it to get your balance though
I missed a chip shot like at "2:55 in the video" this morning lol my dad was laughing lol it happens 😂
Haha happens to all of us! If you haven't missed a shot like that then you haven't been duck hunting for long enough!
Greate hunt bro enjoy life❤❤
Jesus buddy
bout time you hit the range for some practice
AWESOME
Amazing video as usual.
Thanks Nasser!
Great vids, please keep em coming with or without a dog both styles work for you
I appreciate it! Hoping to have some more kayak hunts soon!
Lmao at the duck missed directly in front of you. I missed one twice like that the other day 😂 sometimes they almost to close. Also your hail call seems different now like you don’t cut the notes with your tongue? Any reason for that?
Great hunt man, what shotgun you using
Thanks brother! I'm using a Franchi Affinity 3
What GoPro are you using? Also good shooting👍
I'm using a couple GoPro Hero 10s
not sure but the giveaway over?
Didn't see a link.
Yep a dog makes the hunt .
We should get a hunt this season, I’m in Texas birds are just now getting here
Not sure if I'm going to make it to Texas this season unfortunately
Hello Thomas,
I've been watching your UA-cam channel since you were bout as young as can be to hunt and have been influenced to begin my own vlogs on my hunting trips and I absolutely love being able to look back on the awesome memories.
I just was curious if you had any advice or tips for a beginner UA-camr like myself being from a small town where I feel my content doesn't get out much?
Any info is greatly appreciated and thank you for giving me that inspiration to start my own vlogs.
Thanks brother! I appreciate you watching my videos and it's awesome to hear you're getting into documenting your hunts as well! The main advice I would have is to just be yourself in your videos and try to create content that's relatable to other people while doing so. Document as much of the hunt as possible so that someone could put themself in your shoes and envision going on that hunt. Creating a lot of content is a big part of it as well, the more videos you can put out during hunting season the better from my experience
@@HokeOutdoors thank you!
THANX 4 THE VID. WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR SIGHT ATTACHED 2 THE GUN ?
Thanks for watching! It’s a ShotKam on the gun
@@HokeOutdoors THANX 4 THE REPLY
I am ready for some good weather in my area. We just opened up, and the birds already seem stale.
What state are you in? Looks like we've got another front coming this week so hopefully it'll send a new push down the flyways
is there anyway you can link all of your calls in your description?
Do you not hunt Virginia anymore
I'll be back in VA in a couple weeks. I've been working up in MN for the last couple months though
What area of Minnesota is this? I hunt south central Minnesota area and we don’t get widgeon at all
What area of mn are you located? Im from elk river area and have a cabin on a private lake up near international falls.
what call do you use? sounds really good, keep it up man
I appreciate it! I'm using a DRC Rev
What size shot do you mainly shoot?
What brand of gun do you use and what the name of it I'm trying to save up for one?
What size shot do u use for mallards and teal
What kind of camera do you use on ur shotgun
What camera do you have on your gun?
What manufacturer makes your fold-out blind for your kayak. Also what length is your kayak?
It's a cabelas northern flight kayak blind and I'm using it on an old town discovery 119 which is just under 12 feet long
How do you get so much time to hunt with work and stuff if you don’t mind me asking? Awesome vid btw
I actually work for Cory whose the owner of DRC Call Co. Luckily because we're both hunters and not on a 9-5 schedule we can hunt a good bit and still get our work done in the afternoons and evenings
@@HokeOutdoors that’s awesome, I’ll just keep working my 9 to 9 and dream😂
Spanking em!
No complaints about how MN treated me this season!
What shells do you shoot
Como siempre caza salvaje y autentica, preciosa la entrada de cercetas. Saludos
What shotgun do you use ?
mumkin makbasuh tasnae alkhartush
Okay I’m not hating at all but a tip is to cut off your notes when calling
For sure, it's something I've struggled to master. Especially when things get hectic, that's when I really notice the notes running together
9:05 subtitles: *laughs*
9:17 also here subtitles are so rude against that poor mallard
U should use a walking stick more
anah min aleiraq mutabie jadid
Your water swatting so much because you have a delay on your rising of the gun because of the shotkam.
I'm sure it looks that way from the videos but I've been using the ShotKam for going on 3 years now and it's never slowed me down before. The combination of the cold, wind, and this being the first hunt of the season out of the kayak layout blind made it pretty tough to get up on them quick
What shot do you use?
3 inch #2s for the most part
@@HokeOutdoors ok thanks! What brand have you found to have worked best for you?
How do I enter the give away
It's already over unfortunately
That’s okay. I haven’t been watching videos until like this week. I’m going to stay on top for the next one. I need some decoys 😂
That’s okay. I haven’t been watching videos until like this week. I’m going to stay on top for the next one. I need some decoys 😂
You need to seperate the notes in your hail call. Also, not a fan of the water swatting.
Dude you gotta start shooting more. watching some of your videos just bugs me sometimes because you’re too timid to shoot when you’re a good shot. You need to shoot more
If I had a dog with me on this hunt I would've definitely been more willing to shoot birds over the cattails but without one I was trying to be extra selective so I didn't have to spend time looking for downed birds
What gun camera are you using?
It's a ShotKam
