It’s a good hide I have had mine for a few months. Waterproof is good I found if you don’t really seal the front window up then it leaks in a bit but the rest is very good. Worth the money. I’m thinking of getting the bigger tragopan one. It’s setting the way forward for hides.

Thanks for the review. I've been looking at this hide. I've got a reasonable amount of experience using low hides that I've constructed out of tarps etc. There are some huge advantages to this type of hide, in the stuff will come much closer to a low hide than an upright hide, and the low angle you are shooting from. You need one of those self-inflating mattresses when it's cold or just for comfort. Yes you co get neck ache. However, I've found if you roll onto your side when nothing is happening you can get reasonably comfortable.

Great advice Stephen. I've already got the mat. Definitely roll on to my side or back when I can take a break.

Brilliant, very flexible, could lay down a yoga mat quite light, it may help for long stays. Many Thanks Paul.

Already planned! I bought a big gym mat a while ago so that will be part of the set up.

Great and very detailed review Paul! It's one of my favourite hides from Tragopan, the low angle has so far come in handy when I've been shooting black grouse on a lek and waders. I think you could have at least tried a magic spell to erect it though 😅

This looks like a great idea , I think a comfortable mat on top of that ground sheet would make life more comfortable. However with my back and neck problems it would be a non starter ! I have even had to swith to lighter camera equipment so I can carry on taking photographs . So I would need one I could sit up in , I might look into it for use in my garden ;D Thank you for sharing this review :D Teddy

I would also check out Espend Helland on UA-cam. He uses Tragopan regularly too and has more knowledge than me.

It looks a bit of a specialist hide and not what you’d use on most occasions like your other one. I can see circumstances when you’d want to be low, on the coast, rutting season etc, but I can’t see the advantage over camouflaged netting though I can see disadvantages like not being able to change position. I'm sure one where you can sit comfortably will always be the first choice. I think only one portal for the camera is extremely limiting compared to the netting, as would the length of time an asked bodied person could use it. For most of us with a physical disability that would be zero.
I great review, thank you for your honesty but sorry I’m not too impressed.

I've got a reasonable amount of experience using low hides I've cobbled together myself with tarps etc. This type of hide has got some huge advantages over other types of hide. Firstly and most important many wary birds will come much closer to a low hide, than they will to an upright hide. I've had Fieldfares feeding in a very relaxed way 30cm from my face, and them and other birds actually going beneath the end of my lens. These are birds that wouldn't come anywhere near an upright hide. It seems that many birds and animals just lose all their fear when a hide is really low. Secondly with anything at ground level, you're always going to be looking down at it with any other type of hide.
I've tried putting camouflage netting or sheeting over me. It's just nowhere near as effective, although it depends on your distance from the subject. The sheet is supported by you so every time you move, so does it, and your intended subjects immediately become aware that there's something hiding under the sheet. It's worked with Rabbits when they're further away, but not with birds who are only too aware there's something underneath the sheet. This is why something that suspends what's covering you, above you, is far more effective.
I appreciate anyone with a disability might find it less easy to use, but as I say it has unique advantages no other hide has. I've never used a pre-made hide like this, but it would be useful as it's more portable and easier to set up or move around. The only thing I can see which might possibly be an issue with this design is if the back part is isn't suspended high enough above your legs, and any movement of your legs causes the outside of the hide to move, giving away that there's something alive hiding under the covering.

Hi Mark. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate what you mean about the alternative camou netting. I think this hide will work for me when I hopefully do more shots in the orchard, low level, in autumn. You are right about the comfort though. For able bodied people I think it is still tough.

Hi Stephen. I remember your hide experiences with the fieldfares. I agree about the movement; camou netting can work o.k. at times but you have to keep so still - at least in this hide I can move around to relieve the discomfort! I like the ease of putting up too.
