It amazes me that people think once you reach financial stability that we quit budgeting.? Budgeting is a life skill and a discipline.

Very true... Back when my husband and I were in the trenches of getting out of debt, we would often have this vision of money just flowing in once were out of debt... Everything was going to be suddenly easy and require less planning and thought. The opposite is the case. Now that we are debt free, we are very aware of how our money comes in and goes out. Budgeting is the tool that keeps everything in check, and if we didn't budget, I'm certain we would be right back in debt!

You know, I read a comment from a UA-cam channel that reacts to some of Sarah's videos. The comment said that they saw a video about how she thought buying dressers from IKEA was too expensive, but that she could afford to get a swimming pool put in their backyard. This comment just goes to show that people don't know how money and budgeting works. They don't realize that it's because people don't over spend on some things that they can afford other things that they are working towards. Also, people have this strange misconception that if you can afford to have a swimming pool put in, then you must be able to afford things like expensive dressers as well. While that may work for some families (like maybe the Rockefellers) it does not work for most families. Most families have to work and wait for what they have.

I had my son use the calculator while I was shopping to keep him occupied. He was less likely to see things to ask for, I started when he was about 4 years old as a game. He started guessing the total and making the change in his head while I was paying. i always used cash so I would have to stay in budget. He loved what he called the "game". He is a Mathmatician now at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. We laugh and say it is because we played Payday, Monopoly, and Mom gave me a calculator in the grocery store. HA HA

I have been making my own lard for years. I buy leaf lard from a local butcher for pennies a pound and render it down each year. It make the best pie crusts, biscuits and other pastries ever! I usually just bake with this lard but I cook with just the reg lard that I also have rendered for years. The rest of the pig lard is for cooking. When we get a side of beef I ask for the beef lard and render it down for cooking too, it is called beef tallow . I have used this to make soap too. I also keep my bacon fat and cook with it. Does my heart good to see so many young moms going back to the old ways. Your children’s health will benefit from your new ways of feeding them. By the way, you should be asking for all the bones from your cows and pig to make bone broth.😊

It is actually very unhealthy for them to consume lard! The very scriptures claimed to be important tell us this, but, we don't believe and find several ways to justify it. I hope the children's bodies are not harmed and as they grow, they learn differently and change their mind about consuming the poison. Coconut is better for your melanin, Solo.

Shopping physically is a challenge, but I have learned a couple of tricks that help me when buying from Amazon or catalogs. I leave items in my cart for days, or weeks. Each time I add to the cart I can adjust it, like when you find something you forgot you had! And catalogs! I review, turn down the corner of the pages of my choices; then set it aside for a week. Go back, review my choices, and usually nix at least one or two items. Set it aside and review it a week later. Most times, I toss the catalog without ordering at all. Best to just toss without looking thru at all! Sure enjoy your ideas and budgeting tips. Thanks!

We make our own lard too... using the crockpot and the grinder attachment for sausage on the kitchen aid. Keep the cracklings, the crispy bits, to mix into corn bread and on top of salads. If you need extra fat to make lard but don't need more meat you can ask a local butcher for pig fat. Usually it ends up as waste so they are happy to get rid of it and if you have a good relationship with them a lot of time you can get it for free. I bottle the lard in glass jars and freeze the lard, it lasts an incredibly long time in the freezer (I know for at least a year since I made quite a bit one year LOL). I would not treat it as if it was canned and leave on the shelf, to much of a risk of it getting rancid and loosing that hard work.

Ask you grandma about „schweineschmalz“ that’s what we call that fat from
pigs here in Germany. My mum used it to fry almost everything and we put in on bread instead of butter. It tastes amazing on fresh toasted German bread just with a little bit of salt!

You might want to do your “ no spend (clean out)” once every 3 months. That way it breaks it down quarterly per year. My family does it this way and it actually works better in the long run for freezer & cupboard space, paying attention to what’s in them and reducing cost. Just a suggestion. God bless.

I love rendering to make lard. We get a lot of it when we purchase our pig. The "crackle" that is left over is amazing on salads etc. We use lard like we would any other fat. It is great for cookies.

Feeling inspired to start ordering my groceries. Only issue is their selection. I might adjust and send my husband with a list cause he sticks to it and I add as I shop and buy extras. We did the pantry challenge last month.
Congrats for getting off Diet Coke!! Way to go! We switched to soda water when we quit our “bad habit” drinks and it works great as a transition drink when trying to “quit” less healthier options.
Also can you make bread without lecithin? I sure do!! I have a great daily bread recipe without extras- just salt, sugar, water, lard, flour, and yeast or sourdough starter. Works well for me!! Might be able to eliminate the soy lecithin from your pantry once you are out?

Its best to render lard low/slow... I start pulling the lard out as it melts down that first stuff you pull out will be the whitest and have less flavor to it. This is what I save for my baking... the last lard I render down I use in my cooking. Try this next time. Great job though! Using lard is definitely a learning process!

Sarah, my parents were both born in the 1930s and were from large families, where NOTHING was wasted. After both my parents had passed away, I was wondering what to do with the "cracklings" that were left from rendering lard. I called my mom's older sister and asked her what to do with them. She said she would use the cracklings in corn bread for another flavor---not too much, but some. She also said she used her lard and cracklings to make homemade soap. She said that the cracklings made the soap dark, but it was good soap. I have read where "old-timers" would even use beef drippings to cook with. My daughter-in-law just canned a bunch of cooked ground beef and she "clarified" the meat drippings and canned the beef tallow it made. It looked about like lard in the jar. She said she had seen a YT video on clarifying fat and used that method. Not sure of all the process, but I'm sure it could be found on YT! Have a blessed day.

In my state Kohl's does not show clearance items online. However if my sister goes in person she walks out with a trash bag full of clothing for about 125 bucks. Shop on a rotation Jan, April, Nov. Get grains another 3 months beans another 3 months toiletries, another condiments. That way it's more spread out.
