I was expecting an audible sponsorship 😂
So were we... So were we ;)
Missed opportunity! 😂😂
I kind of wish you talked more about how reading 29.75 books changed you, and your perspectives. Did you find your vocabulary expanded? Did you start noticing details around you previously would have missed? An excellent video nonetheless!
Yes, and if the 30 day challenge was even a good idea. So much potential left out of the video.
Good point. And these were mostly fiction books. What's the point in that?
@@AB-py6jl fiction explores the human psych and ways of viewing the world.
Dune: Mankinds relationship to power and Nature
Lefthand of Darkness: Alienation companionship, relationships between men and women.
Clockwork Orange: Violence youth and the cycle of revenge.
That is not how reading works, you know that right? Reading 30 books rarelly influence you that much, it is really hard to find these special books that have an impact on your life. Maybe the timing, or your mood, can greatly affect how you internalize a book. Also, you need to really invest in reading for it to affect your vocabulary. I read 100+ books a year (that is without counting all the scientific papers), with reading times of something around 3h in workdays and with most of my weekend invested in reading too, and I barely notice my vocabulary getting better. Only at times that people ask me what an word I wrote means, that I notice such things.
@@AB-py6jl because people like fiction? What kind of gatekeeping bullshit are you spewing?
Low-key thought this was a BuzzFeed video
HolyKnight 13 they’re just a carbon copy of the try guys
Me too.
I can easily read 400 pages in a good day, When I don't have any priority over reading books.
Buzz feed doesn't read books 😂
HolyKnight 13 haha me too
The original challenge is called PhD and it lasts several years. ;-)
hahahahhaahhah
Hahaha good one
Hahahaha
'1400 books in 4 years' challenge.
But did you actually enjoy reading them or did it become a race where you just swallowed words to be done with?
try out this great library guys

Oh man... I'm here trying to read 6 books in a year...
Recabilly that’s a good goal! How’s it going for you so far??
@@GoalGuyson the fourth book, I'm working from home now so I should be able to knock the last ones out before the end of the year. Before this year I literally have only ever read 1 book in full. I decided to change that and start slow since I know I'm a slow reader.
I've read Ready Player One (my first book before this year), The Martian, The Eighth Day, Maze Runner, and I'm on Harry Potter right now
@@Recabilly that's great to hear! What are your thoughts on them? I'd really like to know.
@@zainabzubair1797 absolutely loving them.
I'm reading the next book in the Maze Runner series The Scorch Trials.
It's funny how after the book is over I feel like I miss the characters, I get attached to them and I don't even realize it until after I finish the book.
@@Recabilly and then you'll get mad when the series is over, also I'd recommend the Michael Vey and Percy Jackson series.
I believe books are more of a quality than a quantity thing. And no, I don't mean reading "big" books or "the greats/classics", I mean books that hold a significance to the individual or present something significant to them. There's no shame in reading a book slowly so long as it makes an impression.
A Speaker out for my own heart
That is why for this challenge, I don't think comprehension necessarily matters. If you remember a crap book, what is the point. However, if you can't remember the great content you picked up from an amazing book, what is the point there either? There is a happy medium out there for everyone.
Preach!
I agree I’ve read over 1000s of books in my lifetime , but I’ve only kept about 6 and reread them constantly because they make me feel a certain feeling all those other books could not one book I’ve read about 15 times already
@@awesomedirt3erhaps is the reason why your unconventional grammar hasn’t wisen up enough.
*I'm amazed you didn't burnout. It would have taken me a week to get through just one.*
try audiobooks and try reading fiction I easily go through a book a day when i have the time and i average a book every 3 days
How much do you retain ? Or what is the impact or message you achieve to perceive .
And i think the joy is in that waiting and enjoying your book
So long as you're not reading an epic fantasy this can be done.
you are a youtuber right?Nevermind
i LOVE reading but i struggle with reading comprehension and procrastination so it can take me 30 day to read just one book!
Victoria reading 1 book in 1 month isn’t a shame , the goal is to finish the book no matter how long it takes you. After your first book read I’m sure your reading comprehension skills will improve slightly, and if you keep at it you’ll develop those skills further and further , good luck
Victoria I had some success with reading comprehension in listening to the audio books while reading the physical copy as well. Having both auditory and visual sources helped my retention and focus 👍
That’s 12 books a year which is more than most and nothing to be ashamed of
If you read 30min-an hour a day you will reach 1 book a week for sure. There many ways to discipline yourself.
My best method is only having a book for an hour and nothing else So then I have no other option but to read it. Keeping electronics and other distractions else where. Don't get discourage by this, this seems too extreme and is only a challenge. I would like to know how much he spent each day. One time he spent about 5-6 hours reading but what about work, sleep, family and other responsibilities?
This is so inspiring and impressive!! It takes me forever just to read one chapter of a book!! Good job!!
This channel is the definition of pure discipline.
Or he's full of bull? Seemed scripted and the narrative and drama felt planned out in advance.
@@travellingshoes5241 it's never helpful to assume the worst. Even if there's a chance that that's true, it doesn't help us or anyone if we think that. It's better we think it's true even if it scripted
For whoever wanted to read more but felt that 1 book a day is too daunting, I recommend aiming for 2-3 book per week and slowly work your way up from there.
Not only is this doable, you wont feel guilty if you couldn't read for a whole day because of your daily activities. Keep in mind each person has their own reading pace, so experiment and do whatever works best for you! Cheers
I think they should just start with 3 to 4 a month. Most people read less than that and it's a good start. They just need a push to be reminded that reading is fun and that way they'll end up prioritizing reading.
@David Bush that's great. Keep going!
I started with one book in 6 weeks. Then, one book and in 4 weeks. And so on to 3, 2, and one. 2-3 A week can take 30 hours per week for me. so more than a book a week can hurt me even.
@David Bush I read a book while writing this comment. Get on my level peasant.
@David Bush bravo, keep reading! 👏👏👏
Great video! I've been wanting to try this challenge myself, thank you for showing the very real obstacles when going about it!
Brian Wreckler give it a shot mate! Just try not to get behind like I did 😂
I love the production quality of your videos. You must put a lot, lot lot of time and energy into the filming and editing of your videos. Congratulations. Certainly the attention to detail and work you put into your product differentiate you from the 9999 other goal and motivation videos the lazier types put out. I really hope your channel will have 750k subscribers in a year, you deserve it.
Thanks!
Great video, so close! Some really interesting book choices too.
Oh my god I'm so glad I found this channel. I can learn a lot from you. You are so disciplined!
I swear you get more and more ambitious every video! I love it
JedDraws just trying to keep pushing myself 👍
WELL DONE, SIR. Your tenacity is inspiring.
Great video! Thank you for your great and inspirational videos!
Dude, you're killing it with book selections. Glad to see you got to Black Skin, White Masks -- hope you enjoyed it.
The Bluest Eye is still sitting on my shelf, but I might have to brush the dust off and give it another go.
NotQuiteTaoist loved it! You should definitely give The Bluest Eye a read!!
I have discovered this channel becuase of the "How Harry Potter Influenced the Election" video, but I really liked the goal videos better, like this one (and at first I was reading the channel's name as Coal Guys, until I realized it was Goal Guys, what definitely makes more sense). It is really inspirational to see you two put your goals to practice or challenges, especially being two average guys, not some rich and famous vlogger or someone backed up by a huge corporation and dozens of people to assist.
Been in a bit of a reading slump. Got discouraged a bit, but damnit if you can read (almost)30 books in 30 days, I have no excuse not finishing "On the Road" in the next week. Love the channel, keep'em coming!
Great Tatsuro Yamashita track. Keep it up mate!
New to the channel and really enjoying your content, but I think some things could have been expanded upon, such as how this affected your personal and work life, how your lifestyle changed, if you feel "burnt out" on books afterward and why, or if you feel refreshed and looking to read more, etc. Either way, really cool video content!
I really loved this and definitely plan to check out some of the titles you mentioned.
If I could offer some constructive criticism, I think you were too hard on yourself in terms of page count. A book is a complete work no matter how it is presented, so your graphic novels could have counted as full length books. I also think that relaxing the page count could have allowed for other, shorter works like poetry and plays. This sounds like a great chance to check out titles or books you may not typically read and might have eased some of your stress.
Either way, I'm super impressed by how close you came to reaching your goal. I'm excited to check out your other videos, as well. Thanks for sharing!
This has got to be my favorite youtube new find recently.
I love your vids bro, keep it up!
I love challenging myself to reading challenges! Back about 8-9 years ago, I challenged myself to read 100 books over my summer vacation and I met that goal. I continued that goal all through my schooling (so 100 books per summer minimum). I set a new goal for this year. Read 1,000 books in 1 year. I'm at day 43 and have read 114 so far this year! One of the craziest things that has happened throughout these years of challenging myself to read more is how much my reading speed has increased (and comprehension)! Keep up the reading!!!
So happy to see The Stand lurking on top of the shelf :-)
You should try Ursula Le Guin's "The Dispossessed". One of my favourite books, even though it was required for one of my classes in uni.
Way to go! Very inspiring! I used to read all the time, but kinda got out of the habit... Next challenge: write a 250 page book in 30 days? ;)
It's so easy dude. I myself is not of course a professional and my writing is obviously not well standard. But I used to write 10 pages in an hour. And in 6 hours it would have been 60-80. The more wrote the better the speed went. 250 is easy for me and it'll be even easier to him of course.
6 hours writing challenge I did for couple of days. You can try in any amount. It's so fun.
@@adnanalam2006 writing a 250 page manuscript with a well thought-out plot and characters is not easy. Everyone writes at a different pace. A 250 page manuscript is probably around 70-75k words, which for the normal person is insanely hard. NaNoWriMo just happened (Where in November you try to write 50k words) and not a lot of people win. So, it may be easy for You, but for a majority of others it's difficult.
@@adnanalam2006 Also, 3,000 words an hour is an insanely fast almost inhuman writing speed.
True. And I think if I ever go for the challenge, I'd probably fail. Because it takes an enormous amount of patients. I don't lack it but still I agree the challenge is difficult for sure.
Ever heard of NaNoWriMo?
I read a lot (average 15 books/month), and have seen other people do "30 books in 30 days", but never with the rules you had (250 pages/day, graphic novels counting as .5 page, etc.) I am very impressed! I'll be checking out more videos on your channel.
this is exactly the push i need to start reading again. thanks.
This is something so easily fakeable, but I know for sure that’s not what you’re doing. Your channel is so inspiring!
Read The left hand of darkness as a child >10a ago and listened to the audiobook again in the summer. Great stuff
I vote for Children of Blood and Bone!
And I hope you still do finish those 75 pages of The Outsiders! It's such a good book!
I got the notification of this vid and it made me smirk, y’all crazy !
YOUR CHANNEL IS AMAZING
I read a lot, and i read pretty quickly and i never even try to read more than ten books a month for the sake of my sanity, job, and also retaining, appreciating, and reflecting on what ive read (even though it sometimes does happen if i stumble across an amazing series) This was a really commendable effort and anyone that even tries this and makes it through one book a month deserves credit for being able to enjoy the act of reading.
I've seen ta-nehisi coates name popping up a lot, after being introduced to his work through a black panther comic, I would love to see you talk more in depth about his book "Eight Years in power"
Wow im impressed!!! Great job!!!
“the outsiders” is actually my favorite book. it made me want to start reading again. it impacted me like never before, and i really hope you finished it.
stay golden ponyboy
Same! My English teacher gave us the book. It's the first school book I loved and read it 3 times before I wrote my assignment.
Well done and thank you for including your reading list. I would be interested to know how many books your have read and how many books you have listen to.
Awesome vid and good job on the challenge. I have to read one book at a time mostly. How did you feel bouncing around between multiple books along with a few audio books? Were you able to retain a lot of information or the stories? Looking forward to more videos!
A Monster Calls is so good!!!
I’ve read children of blood and bone truly a great story
I don’t want to say spoilers but just for people who are interested if you like wide worlds with a deep lore and thrilling characters then please give it a read
Eric Giangiulio dude I wrote that at like 3 am. I completely forgot I even wrote it
Fantastic video guys.
Bkr Z I love you.
Good to see you're still in great shape. Looking healthy dude!
The Anatomy of Story is a masterpiece. Good pick with that one.
Nice Job. Do a review on “Why we sleep.”
You can do an entire video about how reading 30 books in 30 days has changed you. Did you notice anything different? Did you read faster, love reading more, or get bored to reading when the month progressed? Personally I feel like reading constantly makes me exhausted emotionally and mentally as I'm really engaged/invested in the books most of the times. Really want to know more about how the journey happens.
Cool video. Thanks!
You have my respect for this challenge. Those aren't little tiny books, I mean those are really big books, so great job man! Keep up the hardwork!
I read Children of Blood and Bone. I enjoyed it. I’m currently reading John Grisham’s The Reckoning. A good read so far
I think I saw the Myth of Sisyphus being read on the bus, that would be amazing to get your thoughts on x
What is the name of the song that start at 0:35? It sounds good!
You just gained a subscriber. This video inspired me to read more.
This is a great challenge to try read more! Might try an altered version for just a week to fit around my schedule!
Do a video on the Why We Sleep book please!
So my goal last year was 25 books and I did it with a week to spare.
This year was 20 higher quality so old philosophy, stroke recovery and George Orwell so I’m only on 11 but the other goal was travelling in South America and I’m doing that so a partial success.
but... you did not talk about what sacrifices you made, what you left out to put reading into your day... or did you just sat there for hours and read and didn't do anything else during the day???? I was expecting a more thorough video :\
Fabricio Nicoletti it never really felt like a sacrifice to me. Obviously I had to reprioritize some things in my day to day schedule, but overall, it was a very enjoyable month.
I understand it, and I find it very inspiring that you dedicated a full month to reading. I could guess that it was a blast. What I ment to say is that in a regular situation, like working on a full time job, it wouldn't be fizzible without giving up a lot of other activities. I guess my expectations of the video were just different. Great job nontheless. I admire your work and dedication.
I'm glad you liked le guin. She's great. I noticed that you liked Neil gaiman too. Well, gaimen read guin's "earthsea"series as a kid and he cites le guin as one of the authors who influenced him most.
Bilbo Waggins no way!! That’s awesome!
I have done many readathons. Picking up classics is your first mistake. They are much slower reads! Audiobooks are helpful. Doing the 24 in 48 readathon. I listened to audiobooks while showering, eating, resting my eyes a bit and driving to get the most of my time! Great mid-grade novels also help because they are quicker reads and make you feel accomplished. I completed it though! Great job to you! You were soooo close!
Your time lapse reading on the couch magically gave you more coffee :p
Raymond Dam good eye mate 😂
@@GoalGuys haha, greats vids though! Keep it up!
One of the most interesting/inspiring videos I've seen in a while. I'd love to see you read through the King James Version Bible in 30 days.
The kings james buble would take him at least 2 to 3 months. The bible is really long book.
The inclusion of my favorite Tatsuro Yamashita song convinced me to subscribe!
Thanks! You just encourage me
Gosh I love this challenge. So cool!
Its very lucky or great at least you have library nearby. here in india u need travel to train at least for 1 day to reach certain certain destinations to finally see the glimpse of any library nearby
Yes~ Ursula K Le Guin! I finished that book in January and then decided to make 2019 the year of scifi.
I've read hundred books in a month (although at that time I had graduated and did not have a full time job yet). Here is how you can do it:
1. Switch to ebooks if you can and make the font slightly smaller. I've found that reading ebooks is much faster compared to paperbacks. Moreover, when you are reading a paperback, your eyes have to continuously move from one page to the next and then, of course, you also have to flip the page. With an ebook, you save quite a bit of time because you minimize your eye movements.
2. Minimize sub-vocalization. Once you start suppressing subvocalization, your reading speed would increase tremendously. This is hard to do, but with enough reading and practice, you should be able to do this.
3. Skim a little. People often read every single word on a page and that slows them down significantly. But if you start skipping stop-words (articles etc.), you can still retain the content and meaning of the text while at the same time increasing your reading speed. This might not work for everyone, but it does work for me.
4. Incorporate audiobooks in your routine. Audiobooks are extremely convenient. Listen to audiobooks while you work out, do chores, cook, commute etc. All in all, you can easily listen to 2 hours of audiobooks a day. And here's the best part: don't listen to them at 1x speed. 1x was always very slow for me, so when I first started listening to audiobooks, I listened to them at 2x. Over time, I increase it to 3.5x. This means that in two hours, I can finish a 7 hour audiobook (230-250 pages). And over time, you can read/listen to a lot of books. Of course, do not increase your listening speed if you can't retain comprehension. But you will see that if you get used to listening to something at 2x, switching to 2.5x would not take that long to adjust to.
I hope this helps people.
You deserve millions of subs
Hey goal guys! Thanks for the great video and for the inspiring challenge. Question: Do you think you enjoyed the books you read throughout the challenge as much as you would reading them at a slower pace?
Adam there was definitely some added stress with the challenge, especially towards the end, but overall it was still a really enjoyable month. Forcing myself to prioritize reading like that forced me to sit down and really focus in on my reading. Felt good to be focused and productive in my reading 👍
Wow! Well done.
Wow. And I thought challenging myself to read one non-fiction book a week was hard.
Such a cool channel!! And always nice to find Canadian content. I think I might pick up "Why We Sleep".
Would you say that overall you liked these books more or less than you might have otherwise?
u have to finish the outsiders, it's amazing!!
I regret not reading regularly in the past. Yes, I read for assignments, but not on my interest. Now I'm trying to read one book per month and it is just a great experience and motivation. I'm turning 21 soon and hope I am not too late to start reading espdcially when English is my 2nd language for me.
Dude ur just like that girl from "The Middle".. Great content tooo!!
I'm really motivated to do this!
>>> I Just want to say I seen one of your videos for the first time a couple days ago, and had to come back to your channel because your positive helpful approach, but it was primarily your editing that called me back, it is very unique and it stuck with me, and I just subbed to your page, great work build your brand Goal Guys, truly great resourceful work!
I have wanted to do this for so long.
i wish i had enough time to do that!!!!i LOVE books !!!!!!they are just....i have no WORDS!!!!
this channel deserves billions of subscribers
Cool challenge🙂. What was the book that had a chapter entitled "The Fearless Knight"?
Did you take into account the font size on each page? Also what did you do when you can across a book you just did not like?
do the Myth of Sisyphus!
Please do why we sleep!
When you were waving that book over the water I was thinking, “Don’t drop it, don’t drop it!”
I read fairly slowly, about 30 pages an hour. I actually don't like to rush my reading and enjoy hearing the words in my head.
My vote is for either Why We Sleep or Marlena!
Great!
Btw, R.J. Rushdoony read a book a day for 50 years, most of which were considerably rigorous in nature (philosophy, theology etc).
This video went from good to great when he played that Tatsuro Yamashita track
Children of blood and bone is so good! The second book is amazing as well
I can read 3 books that are over 400 pages in a day and books around 800 in a day so for me it’s really interesting to see how different people’s reading speed can vary so much
In the last Christmas break I read 20 books within 14 days, 7 of those were only Manga but one was "Pillars of the earth" which was really, damn long
Hi, will you please try my memoir titled, "Wildflower, a Tale of Transcendence?" I would love that!
The bluest eye is one of my favorite books:))))
Please do Children of Blood and Bone
My man Reading Fullmetal alchemist, you are amazing man
