How To Stain Pine Wood-Tutorial

  • In this video, I show you how to stain pine wood. It is a simple DIY tutorial, and I use a scrap piece of pine wood to test the stain color that I will be using for a larger project. The color that I chose was espresso, and it produced a medium-dark brown stain color on the pine wood. I was really happy with the color, and I ended up using it for the entire project!

    I’ve been trying to pick the right color and it’s so frustrating bc the pictures of the color samples online are all different from each other for the same color. I ended up searching YT videos of color samples to see real life examples and your vid here just sold me on this color 👌🏽. I had no intentions of buying this color based on the pictures but your end result was what I wanted!

    You forgot to tell ppl that if you leave it on for the 5 mins you will end-up with a stain that is at the darkest end of the range for this product. If you want a lighter stain you could leave it on for less time, and if its a water based stain then you could add water to the wood first ( allow to soak into the wood) then apply the stain and let the water draw it into the grain. But I guess that technique sounds like it would be another video. Are you using a voice changing amplifier??

      I'm just learning but this is for sure a step not to be forgotten with soft woods...Unfortunately learning this one the hard way... Sanded and stained a music box base and it blotched all over.. Now I've been sanding and sanding and yes sanding more to get the stain off { Which I left on all night before noticing the blotches .. } and seriously wondering if they'll be any base left by the time I get it all off to pre condition it... :-(

    I’m doing this exactly (except I used wood conditioner first), but when I wipe off the excess with a cloth basically all of the stain comes off. I’m left with the original pine color and dark stain in the cracks and imperfections. Am I wiping too hard? I left the stain on for about an hour and I could still wipe it off if I use enough pressure so I tried to wipe very gently and hopefully the rest will dry :/

    imperfect look like in this video (not as much work) -I favor the latter.

    He was right. He didn't properly sand this piece and every planer mark left unsanded is showing on this board after he stained it. He didn't mention how applying stain directly to a really soft wood like pine as he did will usually end up looking blotchy without using a prestain sealer. I can't figure out where he found a piece of pine that has such a uniform density. I don't think that this is even pine. This guy really likes to talk. He should be demonstrating kitchen tools in flea markets.

    Why stain with grain?

    • @bobmacdonald9507
      @bobmacdonald9507 5 років тому

      Because wiping on the stain leaves streaks. When you wipe with the grain, the streaks blend in with the grain. If you wipe across the grain, you'll leave streaks across the grain, which will stand out. That's not such a big deal until you put a finish on the wood...like shellac or lacquer. Once a topcoat is on, then those streaks are there forever, and they look like scratches under the surface of the finish. When you are applying the stain, it's okay to rub it in in a circular motion...you're trying to rub the stain into the wood and its okay to go across the grain then. But when you are just about done, switch to wiping with the grain and go over the entire piece like that. It will help remove streaks, 'scratches', and blotches and even out the stain job.
