    Today I had this discussion.
If you have a good lifestyle you can achieve many goals, like being a healthy person.

THIS. Way too many people focus on the "what" rather than the "why" - which would save HELLA time wasted going down paths that lead to emptiness. Facts

I’m a single mom, I started coding 10 years ago because I wanted to get a job where I could see my daughter more. As a lead software engineer, working from home, 10 years later I can say that I have the lifestyle that I wanted. Your videos are awesome 🙌🏾

Thank You for the motivation. I took my first technical assessment with Hack Reactor. Even though I freaked out and just froze. I was so happy that I actually was able to read the code and I had an idea of what to do to solve the problems. The proctors were super nice and gave me great feedback on what I needed to improve for the next time.
I have a retest in 2 weeks. For the first time in my life I was excited for the next step and learning from a setback. Normally when things do not go as expected I would quit. Not this time. I see ahead and realize that you need to learn and improve. This first interview got me ready for the hundreds of other interviews and setbacks I will have in this career. Thank You Scott!

Great video. I agree that having a goal in mind is a good thing, regardless of how you get there. A number of years back I had a goal of getting paid to teach people how to code and help them eventually get a job from it. I didn't know how I would do it, all I knew is that I wanted to help others that were in the same position I was in. A couple years ago I was presented with an opportunity to help teach a local coding bootcamp, and it wasn't until the first day of class that I realized I met my goal! I didn't even plan it out that way, it was simply just always somewhere in the back of my mind. I'm happy to say that because of that teaching gig I was able to help teach a bunch of people how to code and they even landed jobs! I'm helping to teach it again this year and it has definitely helped to bring happiness because I love what I do and at the same can better afford to live how I want. Am I all the way there yet? No, but I'm on the right path for me!

Great insights! I hear you on the don't hire friends, that sounds difficult in the long run. I started a business with my wife, and at first it was great, but after a while you start to look at each other in more critical ways instead of simply as your life partner. I gave the entire business to her and became a software engineer and we're both happier because of it.

Thank you again, Scott. Please do a video on how to deal with conflict at work, especially if it involves a team lead.

Another great video, I hadn't really thought about how much lifestyle can be driven by your job! It did bring up a few questions I was curious about your thoughts on...How much does the impact of my job on others affect my happiness? Does this vary from person to person? Cheers and keep up the great work!

Great video. Did you decide to start uploading videos on youtube to change your lifestyle? once you get to that lifestyle what do you do?

Thanks. I did actually. I’m right where I want to be in my life, except I spend too much time maintaining that lifestyle. My hopes with these videos is that I can still maintain the same lifestyle but with less time required from me

Great advice. Do you feel any pressure to “move up” in your career into leadership positions as you gain more experience? Whether from company, coworkers, society, etc.
I’m worried society and many companies expects people with 10->20->30 years experience to take increasingly involved roles at work and it will creep into lifestyle.

I don’t , no. I’ve started two companies and have had dozens of employees before. I know what that feels like. It’s not a lifestyle that I prefer to have. Right now being an individual contributor allows for the best lifestyle for me. I’ll never let someone pressure me into changing how I want to live.
