    Scott, phenomenal video bro! I (and so many people) really appreciate you sharing your experience and perspective on this. I think the only thing I felt was missing was a demonstration of how you talk about yourself and communicate your value in an interview without sounding obnoxious. I think this is hard to do for a lot of folks, myself included. Maybe we can get a pt II that’s just you monologuing as you would in an interview.

    Love this! Thanks so much. I'll be sharing this with my code interview prep study group. Phenomenal advice and excellent video composition, structure editing... Great work.

    I have an interview coming up next week. So a great insight. At this point, I have been doing mostly review of Data Structures and Algorithms. Most of my work has very little development right now. So I have been a little out of practice. Thanks for your preparation insight

    Did a quick search but couldn’t find the video you talked about sharpening your Data structure and algorithm skills. Sounded maybe like a Leetcode substitute.
    You mind dropping the video title?

      I picked up the elgato wave 3 for streaming. It has pretty good sound. Definitely better than the mic built in to my old Logitech C910.

      I think it's key to know what to expect in terms of the culture at the the FAANG you're looking at. They have distinct cultures, if you seek out stories from current and former employees you'll be able to get an idea of whether you will like it. (Much like Scott says in the video, was it point 4?)

  • @GustavoDiaz93

    Wait what? Are you telling me you have a senior role position at Netflix and that you didn't study algorithms, DS, and Design Systems questions for weeks?, last time I did an interview I couldn't pass bc of the algorithms and DS questions, the tips you mention in this video is what I do every time I apply for a job.

    • @ScottMoss
      @ScottMoss  3 роки тому +2

      How comfortable are you with answering those questions? If they stress you out and you’re completely lost, then you should practice solving those problems in a short amount of time. It’s ok to study, do that! It’s just something that has never worked for me.

    • @helenlee5573

      so he’s not capable of passing these challenges. he is giving bad, bad advice. most people can’t relate to this - ESPECIALLY recent grads and people with less yoe - they absolutely have to pass the technical interview. not everyone is scott who can just say “no i’m not going to do that”. try telling that to any google interviewer, yeah, good luck. you can’t skate by on soft skills.
      the amount of people in my circle who grind leetcode is guess what, 100% because it’s the base metric for qualifying technical ability across FAANG+ unless you’re like him who has like 10 years of experience. it sucks but it works, it’s proven it works, and that’s just how industry has decided it. do you think i want to study algorithms on a friday....no..but it ensures parity

    • @GustavoDiaz93
      @GustavoDiaz93 3 роки тому +1

      @@helenlee5573 I thought the same, next time I'm going to say to my interviewer hey "I'm Gustavo Diaz and I don't want to do this algorithms and DS questions" I imagine them telling me "who the heck are you?" "How many frontend masters courses have you taught?" Hahaha just kidding, as you mentioned Scott is great and can say no to that kind of interviews, but the rest of us... well... We have to smash tons of leetcode questions it's what is 🤷🏽‍♂️.

    • @ScottMoss
      @ScottMoss  3 роки тому +4

      @@helenlee5573 I’m capable and have had to in many interviews, including google. But what worked for me was not trying to remember all the leetcode problems and instead just try and solve the problem from scratch. Note if you grind on the problems constantly then yes, you’d develop muscle memory for them. What I was saying here is that there’s not enough time in a few days before an interview to prep for that. That’s something you have to keep practicing even if you have a job.

    • @ScottMoss
      @ScottMoss  3 роки тому +4

      @@helenlee5573 also the industry is very much moving away from grilling you on algo and DS questions. I should know, I actually interview candidates for FAANG companies.

    It seems like a good idea to research the individuals who will interview you, but doesn't that come off as a little creepy to them? It's like "Oh yeah, I know you like guitar because I deep dived your youtube, twitter, linkedin etc". vs "Do you play any instruments, or engage in team sports? It would help with this example."
    I'm curious which approach is better. I feel like when I think I know the person I'm talking to, its more disastrous than allowing them to reveal themselves through the interview. Maybe they aren't that person or don't generally put their real feelings on the web. Now I'm caught in making assumptions about an online persona that may not be genuinely who they are in person.
    Great content and advice!

      @williejin7509 Рік тому

      IMO it’s good to do enough research so that you can carry an interesting conversation. Once you can meet the baseline requirements, most of the interview is trying to get the interviewer to like you.
      It’s best to stick to questions for things they’re proud of like accomplishments. Then design questions to lead into more discussion. For instance, one interviewer I had started their own company so I asked about their experience and why they transitioned to working at a larger company. The idea is to keep it professional and to learn as much as you can. Bonus points for topics that you’re interested in as well or will help you in your career. Avoid questions that are too personal like, “How was your cousins wedding last week?”
      Good luck!
