Replacing UPS battery

  • Putting my UPS back into action by replacing the battery. The battery cost nearly as much as the UPS itself!
    If you've ever wondered why your UPS won't turn on anymore or simply makes a 'donk' sound and turns off when you have a power cut, most likely it's because the battery is completely dead.
    You can remove the battery and try to revive it using a smart charger but it's probably dead beyond repair. If you regularly suffer brownouts and discharge the UPS to the point where the battery is completely dead, it will have a shorter life.
    I'm surprised at how much the price has increased for the 12V 7Ah or 12V 8Ah lead acid batteries that are commonly used inside a UPS.
    I've actually been looking for a replacement battery for quite some time but none of the hardware stores at my nearby malls had any stock until now.
    I still see some off-brand batteries being sold on OLX for 600-700 but some of them are 'refurbished' or 'lightly used' which doesn't inspire much confidence. I think you can still get a brand new off-brand battery for around 900 from some sellers on OLX.
    The Akari battery was P1699 and the Newstar was P1199. I decided to go with the Newstar since it's much cheaper and I have used some of their stuff in the past and was happy with the quality.
    The UPS only cost me P1400 brand new from CDRKING but I"m hoping the new battery will provide longer uptime and last longer. Realistically I probably won't see a huge difference!

    Awesome, I have a ups that cost about $250 a few years ago, the battery must be done by now, I going to open it up and get the battery dimensions and pop a new one in for around $35

    I have an old UPS here that no longer works. Not sure if it is the battery or the relay switches. I ended up buying a brand new APC UPS. Maybe I will try replacing the battery in my old one to keep it as a backup.

    the UPS is throwaway. The batteries are always expensive even here in America. I bought some cheaper generic for mine that was supposedly better but was really trash so watch out for alternative batteries.

      +Shawn Jones Oh yeah? I'm still hoping this replacement battery will serve me well. I've used some Newstar products in the past and found them to be a good quality. Their products are kinda at the mid-high end of generics.

    I'm wondering if your old battery is still good, but that you had a bad connection from the corrosion.

      +Timothy Rupe It's funny you should say that. I was wondering the same thing after watching my video lol. Good or bad, I always keep them and try to get them back to health or use for solar projects, so it wont go to waste :)

    And if you don't want to replace the battery. Connect them up to a car battery/solar bank,They make a good light duty inverter.
    Need to get a little creative with battery wiring and cooling. But it's a cheap inverter. Better than tossing it.

      +Gadget Addict another very helpful video. tysm. UPS connected to solar battery bank and used as inverter would make a nice utube video.. i wonder how if it would perform same as cdr king inverter

    Good video.
    I have a RCT-650VAS UPS. Only my monitor and Wifi router connected to it.
    How long should a UPS be connected to the mains wall socket, to always be ready, for an unscheduled power outage, whilst working.
    Will my UPS battery performance be deteriorated, when i always keep it plugged into the mains wall socket.
    Kindly advise on the above questions.
    Thank you

    Is it possible connect several batteries to the same ups in order to increase the ampers per hour? I make the question because I don't know if the UPS will be able to recharge all the batteries 🤔

    • @maxhofmann6993
      @maxhofmann6993 Рік тому

      In theory it should work however it depends on the amps of the charge controller. It will take longer to recharge but will work

    cool thanks never used one I do have those batteries hear where I used to work voluntary they used them in the emergency lights and every one has a battery to they have to every 2 years replace the battery I got two of these 12v 45cell 10min I have had my CB radio running on this battery for over 6hrs so they are pretty good they were going to be thrown out I charge it on a 30amp 14volt power supply checking to see if it fully charged at 14 volts and hold that over a few week so there pretty good similar to your battery one is Yuasa other is Centuary usually I use the Yuasa one but there the same

      +Kriss Bartlett Good use idea! I think they can really last many years if you treat them right. It's just when you discharge them too far over and over, they kinda get destroyed. It's always nice to rescue a battery that's being thrown out. Even if it can't hold it's full charge, it probably still has some life left in it. Sounds like you have a pretty beefy charger!

    If those are more or less the same as car batteries, which I think they are, you should probably remove the negative terminal (black) first.

    Simple answer: Disposables.
    .... bad for the environment, but it's "too good (cheap) to be true"
    No wonder why it's poorly designed XD

      Did you ever find the answer to your question? I’m thinking about doing the same.

    • @derekfinch9586
      @derekfinch9586 3 роки тому

      @@berniemac8413 You can use any size battery of the same voltage and type (ie: 12v, sealed lead acid). If you get a battery of the same dimensions, it will go inside the UPS. If it's larger, the battery must external to the UPS - just extend the wires (with no less than the gauge of the original wires that lead to the battery). The greater the VA, the longer it will last when there is a power cut.

    i have a question about UPS. i'm planning to buy an ZERBA UPS 500w. it has a feature that you can plug an extra battery on the unit with 12V batt. its like a inverter if you dont have electricity (brownout) so my question is can i still plug the external battery and plug it in to the socket to charge the external battery? so that if brownout comes i have more juice to burn.

    How long did the cdrking battery lasted for you?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 років тому

      +SEELE01 Around 1.5 - 2 years. Pretty short. But I kind of abused it by running it completely empty during numerous power outages.

    how much that ups?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 років тому

      +Julius Sanpedro The UPS was P1400 from cdrking. The video description has more information :) So the new battery was nearly as expensive as the UPS itself.

      +Gadget Addict how many hours that long last the battery?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 років тому

      +Julius Sanpedro It depends on what you have plugged in and how far the UPS is willing to drain the battery. If you have a desktop computer plugged into it, maybe 5-10 mins. If you have just a modem and wifi router maybe a day. Basically you calculate the watt hours of the battery and then compare that to the load you want to run. Minus 10-20% for inverter loss and consider that the UPS probably wont run the battery down beyond 30-40% of its capacity.
