As a native New Yorker , I sometimes forget why people from around the world dream of being here . Then with something like this , an event that shows the limitless level of culture and immersion that exists in this city , I realize once again how beautiful New York really is .
I remember as a kid in the 60’s acting out a rumble during recess. Snapping our fingers and saying, “Play it cool. Pow!” was my favorite part. The Municipal Opera, an outdoor theater in St Louis, must have staged it in the summer. The last 10 rows were free, so the whole family would go.
Glad to see the real music and talent is still alive. West Side Story, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Carousel, Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Flower Drum Song, Camelot. Nothing today can even come close. Well done dancers!
In 1961, West Side Story was showing at the Paramount Theater, in Baltimore, MD. I cried, begged, pleased with my Mom, to let me go see it. For some reason she relented. From that moment on, I knew I had seen one of the greatest, most wonderful movie, of all time. I cried when I was watching it. I fell in love with Natalie Wood. Since then I've played the piano for this show, multiple times. I've seen it on Broadway. I've watched the film, over and over again. It should have won eleven Oscars, not ten.The only other film that moved me like WSS did, was "The Sound of Music." I saw this at the old Ford"s theater in downtown Baltimore, when I was 5or 6. I can't thank my Mom enough, for opening this world to me, and since I"ve seen beaucouo Broadway shows and films, and it keeps getting better all the time. Thanks guys for letting me share all of this. Jay M. from Baltimore.
Awesome awesome never gets tiring watching West Side Story dance routines. So blessed to have performed this 40 yrs ago. Timeless music and dance. Truly lived seeing this flash mob in NY
Fifty years! It seems like 50 seconds. We who were there for the original stage production, and then the film, wondered if this greatest of American musicals might be forgotten as time moved on. It was so connected to a particular time and place. We need not have worried. Just saw it at the 12,000-seat Muny Theatre in St. Louis and it was magnificent, and all the original orchestrations and choreography. The audience was besides itself with joy and at the end loudly sobbing.
Loved it. Gave me a little tear. I don't know if it was the nostalgia of the musical or the sadness that it seems our country is running so fast to abandon the things that have made her great-and Broadway musicals are an American staple so all of that together made me sad, but joyful at the dance same time. My son hopes to be on Broadway someday, but I fear if he ever gets there New York won't be the same....Either way-I loved this. What a brilliant tribute to a 50 year old masterpiece. :)
NY has lost spontaneity in the last decade. You made the streets exciting again. God knows this city needs an injection of new creativity and dedicated young people who work together to evolve the arts to the next level (not to mention it looked fun to do as it was to watch). J Bergasse, you gave just the right elements of Robbins and well executed expansion to pull off a memory that will be remembered for a lifetime. It's why many of us moved here in the first place. Well done
@DancesInCombatBoots !: You are a stereotypical West Side Story fan. Get a grip, call a crisis hotline, dress like Dorothy and critique Liza in Cabaret, watch your favorite Glee episode, take a breath.
Amazing all so gifted, entertained me to the Max, I loved it from the beginning with all that anticipation..... Smooth and professionally executed. Well Done to you ALL!!!!
my favourite musical of all times, West Side Story, yes. I would love to see Lin Manuel Miranda doing a sequel, what would that be like without losing the essence of that show.
My school are doing a production of West Side Story and we've been having 9 till 9 rehearsals for the past 2 weeks as our show is own this Thursday till Saturday. My sister is playing Maria in B cast and I am playing as Pepe. We do a lot of the dances differently (and not saying this because it's our own show) but our dances I think look a lot better with more differentiations, they still look similar enough for you to know straight away it's West Side Story. Or if it's the Sharks or the Jets.
It's such a shame that this show closed. Unbelievable that a classic like this didn't run for decades while other (won't name 'em) crap is going and going and going and...
Probably the first time since the filming in 1959 that that was done on the actual streets of Manhattan! Fantastic. Pity they didn't have real city cops blowing the whistle to break up the mob. Well done.
Man there is just nothing like professional dancers and sharp, dead-on choreography. Just gorgeous.

I have lived in California all my life. But never seen NYC
They come close to the original stage choreography, amazing for such restricted space. I saw the stage version 14 nights in a row at the age of 21.
14 nights in a row.
You were ahead of the Star Wars block busters generation.
I'll bet you weren't the only one. Am I right?
They are dancing to the greatest musical in history and should be proud !
They look proud indeed🙂
You are correct!!

Oh, so cool! How great to see women dance this choreography.....

Well done dancers!
That is because you do not have the same ampersands who created great musical scores.
Funny that the U.S. is much more openly gay now and hates musicals.

"You better leave our turf or..."

"We'll dance the fucking daylights out of you! THAT'S WHAT!"

My friend said the same thing. Wish I could visit soon. Damn near broke
This folks, is a tourist trap New Yorkers never go to.

@@TS-qq7vr I’m a born and raised New Yorker and I live right by here. I’ll be walking through on my way to work tomorrow.
Absolutely awesome, an American classic, the work of Peter Gennaro, Stephen Sondheim and Lenny Bernstein, played out on the streets of New York!
EXCELLENT !!!
Amazing all so gifted, entertained me to the Max, I loved it from the beginning with all that anticipation..... Smooth and professionally executed. Well Done to you ALL!!!!
Wish they would of used the overture from the films beginning. They could of used so many different dances.
and then at the end they just walked off smoothly
