  • As many of you know, Square Enix shut down a massive amount of previously green lit games. We can only speculate as to what they were, but some of them were likely remakes of games people may have been excited for. And with a new business direction, it's likely some fan favorites are never going to see a remake in the near future. So this begs the question: Did Star Ocean Till the End of Time deserve to be one of the lucky few?

Sometimes I really do feel like there's two camps in this Star Ocean fanbase. It's either you are a fan of the games, or just a fan of SO2.
Honestly I don't think making any of the older games more accessible to the modern audience can hurt, be it a remake or remaster. Taste can change per generation, and opinions on the games themselves vary very greatly. So in this case I care so much more for a new potential fan's first Star Ocean game and the memories they'd create with it. Like it's wild to me meeting fans that played SO4 first and regard it more than the others despite its reputation or popularity. To some of us, that was SO2 or 3 and well.. despite thier successes in sales back then, our fanbase/bases are still pretty small and niche today.
But yeah, it's not like I'd want a remake of 3. But I'd be happy if there was :3 More potential new fans to introduce the game to is always a plus

I think many people tend to like their first foray into the series. That's why there's so many so3 fans, it was on the most popular console and one of the bigger JRPG experiences on there.

This is one of very few games that I feel like actually deserves the “FF7 Remake/Rebirth/Re[dacted] Treatment”, especially after seeing the way The Divine Force ended up!
Not only would it be incredibly satisfying to see them all HD-d up and looking more like their Anamnesis counterparts (especially if they do the whole “Battle Trophies” thing again for costumes/modes)…but if they did, it would EASILY beg the question of why they never did a story after this game takes place/ends from the fans (old like myself and New!)
From there, they very easily could set up a story with the “changes” made to the original’s script/plot twists and such! Just imagine how far flung their future must be if they were able to both discover/master “Magic” (Heraldry/Symbology) but also have it integrated into their everyday lives and tech. What sort of story in their version of the Universe that could be told!
Edit: wrote this all while watching with the sound off and watching a second time to get your points into consideration.
    - MP Death is one of the very few things that make the SO games unique and it adds layers to how you build a character. I’ve recently been playing through this again and noticed that you could VERY EASILY get past MP Death by Inventing the “Convert Damage” Books then teaching them the skill to either only take HP or MP Damage. This is something that’s actually HUGE for Character Builds/Gameplay Preferences!
    - Inventions in TtEoT, after having recently spent 7+ Hours restarting for the eventual success of crafting “The Immortal” (a Post-Game level sword only Adray can craft + give to him or Albel) during Disc 1, are not only gated by Chance (Ratings in the Invention Menu by Welch = the Skill Level bare minimum for inventing it) but also by how far you’re willing to go in order to break the game itself. You don’t even need Boyd (after 1000s of Bunny Races for that Bent Mystic Sword) or Gusto (in Disc 2) to make some of the best weapons/accessories (Balbados/Aqua & Evia in Disc 2) that far outstrip everything before the Post-Game! This is something only older JRPGs knew how to do well and TtEoT NAILED this type of Perfectionist play type for people willing to do so.
    - this includes manually filling out Maps…since you get rewards WELL WORTH THE TEDIUM (1/144 + 1/60 + 1/1 Scale Bunnies; sell the latter for 86000 Fol but keep 1x of the former two for +10% Movement in Battle…and 9k/36k for the sold ones). This is something else that you only appreciate if you’re doing replays for Battle Trophies/harder difficulties since it’s EASY MONEY
    - Battle Trophies in this game are arguably one of the very first iterations of a “Trophy/Achievements System” in a game by itself. The fact that they’re still worth going for even in the “HD PS4/5 Port” is commendable!
    - You only really get out what you put into the game and the fact it’s one of very few modern “Ported” games that both have Split Screen/ Battle Mode, Unlockable Costumes (depending on how many Battle Trophies + Trading Cards you obtained), and no changes is truly a blessing!
    - Speedruns of this game are a thing of beauty and truly show you just how ingenious aspects of the (by today’s standards) dated Battle System are despite it not being nearly as good as 2R or TLH Int. and why it works for PS2/PS4. At least…if you’ve taken the time to Invent the Skill Books via Writing Invention.
    - Speaking of…
Lucky Stars (Musty Tome) solves the Bonus Gauge issue
Brittle Tome (Quick Symbol) solves the Adray + Sophia being Slow Casters issue. Or just use Albel for Healing/Antidote/Silence, by giving him that “Common Support Symbols” book, since he’s the fastest caster in the game. [This not only has huge lore implications for Albel but you only find this out by trying Symbology on low MP Characters 🤔]
Deteriorating Tome (Convert Damage I think) for ZERO MP DAMAGE (or even HP Damage!)
Dated Tome (Loot Item) to steal items from knocked into the air enemies (recommended with Nel using Whirlwind Lvl 10)
    - Healing/Fairae Light/Restoration NOT being gated by your INT but only by your Skill Level is such an amazing thing. Same with Skills! This is something I wish more JRPGs did since Star Ocean as a series does this very well.
    …and so on.
    - Private Actions are pretty well hidden in this game and give a lot of playability!
I could keep listing things, but by now, I’ve been writing for 40 minutes straight 😅
Would love to hear your thoughts!

I guess im a weirdo but i like MP death. In most JRPGs magic characters are bad in the early game then broken late game once MP becomes less of an issue. MP death helped maintain balance the whole game. Melee characters can't spam their best abilities either without well managed healing for the whole game. It was also an easy way to beat some tricky bosses who were steong but had low MP. If memory serves, Nel gets shadow wave relatively early

SO3 was my introduction to the franchise. Loved the combat. Could grind for hours on end just raising skill efficiency and to this day Dimension Door remains my favorite move ever. I was also a weeb when I played it so hearing Crispin Freeman voicing Albel fresh off of my playthrough of Xenosaga Episode 1 made me grin nonstop.
I'd be totally down for a remake of it...but at the same time I will completely understand if Square Enix does not want to make the effort for it. And that's also fine.

This is one of VERY FEW games I’ve always felt truly deserved the treatment that FF VII got w/ FF7Remake + Rebirth + 3rd FF7 Re game that’s DOA; it makes sense to both Remake and Rebirth it since a SEQUEL after TtEoT would be EXTREMELY INTERESTING in terms of answers questions that people never really considered like…
[SPOILERS IF YOU FORGOT ABOUT/HAVENT PLAYED THIS IN YEARS]
      - how TF did Elena Frahm (the head Runologist lady in Castle Aquios) end up stuck in the Eternal Sphere with her “shapeshifting/eternal life” abilities? I get she was originally from “4D Space” and died while playing in the Eternal Sphere…but it would be interesting to see how many others like her (and Welch Vineyard) there are across the whole series that we don’t know/haven’t thought of.
      - is Welch Vineyard’s inclusion into every game in the series after TtEoT’s release a sign of the repercussions of Fayt & Maria & Sophia using their abilities to save the Universe from “Deletion”?
      - also, who IS Welch outside of the Eternal Spehere?
      - What does the rest of 4D Space and their own “real” universe look like?
      - do the 4D Beings, after the events of TtEoT, start to fraternize & otherwise start treating the “Eternal Sphere Universe” as just another parallel universe/dimension that they can access while commencing in societal/interpersonal/etc. activities as though they were originally real?
      - What are the implications of Sphere 211 practically being destroyed by Fayt and friends to the Hegelian End of History that Arkives/Gemity are indicative of as being soulless & boring?
      - will Square-Enix attempt to undo the “Sphere = Squaresoft” & other associated elements of the plot twist in the story by rewriting it into something akin to The Last Hope’s plot twist in “1950s Roswell”?
      - will every game prior to TtEot timeline-wise factor in to the story in order to establish interesting plot points w/ Past Protagonists (like Claude, Edge, and others having secretly being characters controlled by 4D Beings)
      - who did Fayt end up with CANONICALLY and why is it Albel or Adray…’s eventual forcing together of Claire with him?
I have SOOOOOOOO MANY QUESTIONS that I wish Tri-Ace would nut up and answer with a story set AFTER this game…it’s not even funny.

Doesn't sound like a hot take to me. While there were some good things that SO3 added to the series with some of the new combat mechanics, resources put into the Star Ocean series would just be better served elsewhere. While it would be nice to see Blue Sphere get a remake and make it outside of Japan, I think that would be far more risky then having Star Ocean 7 made. Time will tell what becomes of the series.

I'd love to think tri-Ace is working on Star Ocean 7 which is why 2R got outsourced to Gemdrops. And Gemdrops did so well with 2R, maybe they'll be greenlit for blue sphere.... Fingers crossed

You do make good points. I was more in the camp, of Star Ocean 3 getting a Remake cause not of nostalgia, because say like Persona 3, it's not aged well and sadly aside from i guess the plot, it hasn't stood the test of time. Further the matter on how well the Second Story R did, which was astronomical as it even fixed so many of my gripes and I think many people's gripes when playing First Departure R, like reduced Backtracking, Actual Encounters you can see and even Skipping dialogue cutscenes as well as looking really good. Would I mind a Remaster instead? I mean I'll take it over the lazy port we got, that and well, Remasters can be hit or miss depends how you handle it. *looking at you Chrono Cross and Tales of Symphonia*.
And normally this would be the part where I say, that we can have Tri-Ace develop Star Ocean 7, while an outsourced team can do make Star Ocean 3 Remake, prefferably Gemdrops. But that also asks on how the game will visually look, giving post Star Ocean 3 has the infamous doll looking faces, which plagued modern Star Ocean games. Tho I know with the recent Square Enix reports, and let's not forget that the last time we had an outsourced project from Tri-Ace's flagships, that resulted in the mediocrity in Valkyrie Elysium.
I'm not against Blue Sphere getting a full-on Remake, which obviously would great, even if they make it look like Second Story R which would be fitting, for a "direct-sequel"

    • @SolaceAndDread
      @SolaceAndDread  Місяць тому +1

Yeah I think my true feelings on it is a remaster with a few fixes would be better than a full remake. I genuinely want to move forward with the franchise rather than looking back at this point. And yes, Chrono Cross and Tales of Symphonia was a crime, lmao.

Huh. I never played SO3, but the concept of MP death was always something that I wanted to see in a JRPG. I mean, it just makes sense if you think about it, HP for vitality and MP for spirit, kinda like you need both to stay alive. Cool stuff.

    • @dndhydrate
      @dndhydrate Місяць тому

It's actually pretty interesting how it's implemented. I did a playthrough recently in where you can create setups and gear that pretty much coverts HP damage to MP for additional defense. It's a metagame that only works well in the higher difficulties to offset the high damage tho.
And early game you there's monsters that are balanced around having higher HP and lower MP, so you can play around that for quick kills. Late game I feel it becomes less impactful unfortunately.
I think it's a really cool idea regardless though, but even after investing thousands of hours into the game I'd say there's probally better ways to implement a dual damage system. I'd personally like to see a way for the damage types to work on each other rather than two separate mechanics that do the same thing.

They spend too much money on these titles then are surprised the exclusive to one console isn't selling well. PS4 is still super relevant to the average person and PC could of offset that loss.

Oh yeah, forgot to comment on this, I just don't understand what is happening at SE's clown HQ. I look at my game library and literally all of my purchases when it comes to SE games are all AA, not the AAA+ extravaganza that I don't see anyone buying. So what the heck is going on? Why is their immediate reaction to cut on the profitable AA titles? I don't get it. XVI wasn't the best seller that they wanted and Rebirth is charting even worse. Am I missing something here or are they insisting on a failed business model? It's like they're ran by the three stooges or something.

My take is if they remake SO3 they need to remove the reverse isekai and give us the rest of the game following Fayt and Maria’s story. Pull some Ff7R stuff to alter fate or something I don’t know. But that ruined the game for most. Cutscene the hauler game instead of remake it. Remove map exploration achievement crap and add fast travel points for back tracking needs, for immersion maybe require inventing teleportation or something if they want to clutch pearls. MP death was so rarely used as a strategy it is pointless - either add more strategy with it or remove it.

SO3 is the best game in the series deserves a remake though I wouldn't mind a remaster like the FF8 and Chrono cross where they updated the char models and portraits. Having said that I'd prefer a remake of Valkyrie Profile Lenneth or a remaster of Silmeria which is still stuck on ps2

Mostly agree with your video, except... I've finished The Last Hope and yet couldn't force myself to finish SO 3.
The map completion tool is so insanely bad... I wonder if tri-Ace even did some Q/A on this.
The dialogue in the introduction is also atrocious. When Fayt is with the small group of refugees and the clowns are literrally MOCKING HIM because his parents are probably dead or maybe alive BUT "will probably end up being eaten alive, ah ah ah !". What the... ?!
I know tri-Ace never shined with their writing but this is insanely bad. No wonder The Last Hope ended up like it did ('kay ?).
I've played numerous very flawed JRPG ; including Infinite Undiscovery (which I finished in Normal and Hard with the post game dungeon). But Till The End of Time ? I can't. I just can't.
    At least there's Motoi Sakuraba.
