Sakaguchi getting addicted to FF14 was such a blessing in disguise! Love that Sakaguchi told Yoshi P he wants ZERO FF14 spoilers. Enjoys being a player too much. lol
I can't tell you how many times, when Square Enix would send me a survey to fill out, I would always write at the end in the comments portion of it "Please reach out to Hironobu Sakaguchi for input on FF game direction." I hope this is a sign of a new beginning for Square and Sakaguchi!
Sakaguchi’s input would be probably against everything Square Enix has built this past decade when it comes to FF tbh. When you play his games vs the games they put out after his departure it’s night and day. Are they ready for that?
Strangely enough, according to Sakaguchi in the Pixel Remaster interview series, he was contacted by the guy in charge of the Pixel Remaster games for input. Sakaguchi said its fine, you don't have to contact him, but the lead of the project insisted he get involved to making sure he was making the right calls, and so he did, for better or worse.
you know what we also need a remaster of? those two Wii games that got pushed via the Operation Rainfall initiative alongside Xenoblade Chronicles. They are The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower.
well only reason this game exist in the first place is duo to apple. they were only one who were willing to invest in this prosject. the deal was apple lends them the money to make this game and its locked in to apple arcade until they pay back the loan, now they have gotten back the rights after they were finish with the loan. not even a apple fan but deal is a deal.
As a 30-something year old "boomer" myself, I wholeheartedly agree with you on the prerendered backgrounds. Contrary to what most modern game devs apparently think, I do believe there is still a place for this kind of design. There's a certain charm, a certain atmosphere that you can get from prerendered backgrounds with fixed camera angles that you just can't quite nail with full-on 3-D graphics that let you rotate the camera 360. Sometimes, less really is more!
You can't imagine how happy I am knowing that Fantasian is finally coming to other platforms!🤩🙌🏽 Thanks for giving us the features the new version will contain, NSP! I am also super glad that Sakaguchi found a new passion project to work on!💕

I think sakaguchi and uematsu and the OGs are winding down on their careers. I know people want it, but they're really old guys now, and they deserve to retire gracefully.
Sakaguchi being a fan of FF14 is an understatement, The Legend got into all aspects of the game and in a game where crafting attaches the name of the crafter to the item...let that sink in.
With how SE was handling their arcard apple games, it slipped my mind that this title was actually a Mistalker game. With that in mind it is definitely intresting to consider how Yoshida managed to bring him back into the fray with SE and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Also makes me wonder if SaGa could be responsible for the re-evaluation of "old school" rpgs being given a second chance since I"d say that niche title that's been making the attempt to reach the same tier as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and/or Persona has been doing a decent job staying within the limelight. So it will be interesting if maybe Sakaguchi has plans to help shift SE focus back to what made them so popular to begin with.
Instead of square enix wasting their time pouring in millions of dollars for some original AAA project that no one may never play (IE Babylon's Fall, The Quiet Man), just focus resources and money into remakes/remasters rather that be 2DHD or 3d remake's. This is what we want and I think square has finally figured that out with recent series like mana, star ocean, the saga series, Dragon quest and games like this fantasian. This is the christmas that keeps on coming.
Although I hated it being locked to Apple for as long as it was, it was done for a reason I don’t hear many talking about. He got his start on an Apple II and it was almost poetic to return to Apple all these decades later for his final swan song.

Then this was announced and a part of me really hopes this was the ultimate reason for them to be doing this
Very excited to finally get a chance to play this game. Also, seeing Sakaguchi work with SqEnix again in some capacity is definitely cool, I just wish this had happened 5 or 10 years ago so that there'd be more time for this renewed collaboration to evolve into something more before he retires. But it would be really nice to see The Guch take one last crack at a FF game before he hangs it up for good.
I love Fantasian! I'm so happy to see it ported to Switch, even though I was initially reluctant. I love how in some platforms it's going to be in 4K and I can't wait to see how the backgrounds look! I watched a behind-the-scenes of how they made one of the sets and it was just so amazing. I'm one of those who feel this is more Final Fantasy than the more recent FFs. Past FF9 I didn't really have much connection with the games.
If we can get one last mainline Final Fantasy from the father or the franchise himself, that would be truly something else. I know he's older now, and a full director role would probably be something he's uninterested in. But what if he co-directed it with someone from the CBU3 team? Maybe even YoshiP himself? That'd be pretty nuts. Whatever the case, it's really lovely to see Sakaguchi back in the mix on FF, and I really appreciate YoshiP all the more for seeming to act as something of a bridge to get the man back over on the Final Fantasy ship. Also, hopefully we'll see some further Mistwalker PC ports in the future. Lost Odyssey and Last Story freed from their platform prisons would be so amazing.
I was so hyped to see Fantasian make an appearance at the direct!! I bought Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Last Story, played Terra Battle, and have put Fantasian out of my mind entirely since it was in the prison of iOS and whatnot. It made me so hyped that this is coming. Fantasian, AND a Phantom Brave sequel?!! YESSSS
The only Mistwalker game I got to play was Lost Odyssey. I wrote to the company to thank them for making such a wonderfully well-written, well-designed game. I loved that game-play experience.
Considering i just bought a wii to play baten kaitos origins, i am definitely looking at this release with interest. Probably gonna grab it for the switch.
It's sad that they didn't mention Mistwalker at all except for a tiny little logo, which most don't even notice, at the end of the trailer. I played most of Part 1. The only reason I didn't finish is because I would rather not pay Apple for a game I could not own in any physical capacity. The game has its issues, but I genuinely enjoyed it and had lots of fun with Fantasian. Fantasian will most likely be a digital-only release, but I'm hoping it gets a special edition physical version at the very least.
Hironobu Sakaguchi is the Hayao Miyazaki of video games. He's been talking about retiring for years yet never does. It seems more likely he'll stay in the industry but be in more administrative roles. Sakaguchi has essentially said he'll stop creating when Nobuo Uematsu can no longer write for his projects and that day seems to be coming soon, given Uematsu's health conditions.
i've always felt that fantasian really lost out on not being on other platforms. I never played the game, but I really liked the soundtrack and often listened to it. I'm really glad that I'll finally be able to play it on PC
I am so happy about Fantasian. I have been recommending this game to everyone for so long. It is so so good. It easily is FF quality and a great experience. And the art style is incredible! All the backgrounds and sets are literally hand made and then scanned in. It’s incredible.
Since Sakaguchi-san left, FF (and Square as a whole) has been... meh.. dgmw, there are times where they kill it (FF XVI) and times where they completely drop the ball (Forespoken, Avengers, Lightning Returns, etc).. it's almost like they've forgotten their identity.. Square was a TITAN (summoning pun intended) of the gaming industry for decades. Every game that wasn't FFVII tried to BE like FFVII. Now, every game just wants to be like Dark Souls/ Bloodbourne.. to have him back, even if for only a moment, should not be a missed opportunity for Square. I expect great things.
Edit (18/10/2024): Good news, yes, it will have a physical release as confirmed by Square Enix themselves. In fact, I have already pre-ordered it as of now. Not confirmed yet at the moment. I think it will have a physical release since Various Daylife (which is an Apple Arcade exclusive as well) does have a physical release from what I've noticed. Still need to wait for a confirmation first.
I love Lost Odyssey and wish Mistwalker would release it on the PS5!! I miss playing that game, even though, I have it for the XBox, it doesn't play well on that old system.
I wish they would remake some of the PS1 era games in the style like that’s game! Final Fantasy eight and nine, resident evil one through three, it would be great! Love the pre-rendered background games
Suddenly Im wondering if he's been working with SE for awhile now, and it's actually him behind the FF9 Remake. As his final game, his magnus opus. He has stated many times FF9 is his personal favorite...
I grew up on pre-rendered background PS1 era JRPGs like FF8, FF9. I get what you mean NSP absolutely love Fantasian backgrounds my god. it now looks like 2000s gamecube/PS2 era JRPG in 4k best way possible
Its difficult for creative types to ever truly retire but it would be a smart marketing tactic to say that this is his last game and then take a break and come back in several years and use the 'my last rodeo' marketing tactic again.
wow, this is exactly what ive been missing from SE... yes, i love the AAA games and all FF titles but i miss the snes jrpg's and ps1 titles, turn based action and awesome storylines etc. yes yes yes from me, cant wait!
I've been wanting to play this game for years. Sakaguchi has had some solid output since leaving Square-Enix. I still have Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. I got a Series X in case my 360 dies. Now, if Nintendo could just release a remaster for The Last Story, life would be perfect!
I would fucking LOVE Blue Dragon to be ported to PS. Since we are in this new age of games being ported everywhere, this seems possible, it would be freaking awesome!
Sakaguchi stating Fantastian will be his last game before retiring is sad but understandable. This port to other systems I will be supporting 100% and i do recommend this game it was very fun and unique i enjoyed it. I really do hope Square will push Mistwalkers games forward even after the retirement. ❤
@@geoffreychauvin1474 He's only the producer on 16, not the director. His job was mostly to promote the game and make sure things were proceeding well during the development. If you don't like the direction the game took, you're looking at the wrong person for a culprit.
With Mistwalker and SQUARE working together, I wonder if we could get a console port of Terra Battle, or even a new game in the series. I still miss Terra Battle 1 & 2.
I had no idea that Fantasian was free on Apple TV all this time lol I downloaded immediately to give it ago and what played was very cool but very much feels like a mobile game. I hope they improve this with the PlayStation release.
I'm really excited for this game, now we need Mistwalker to bring Lost Odyssey and The Last Story back. This is money sitting on the table because so few people experienced these games back when they came out and they are locked to their respective consoles much like this game was with Apple. Switch could run both I bet considering some of the ports we've seen, not to mention the desire for turn based games getting a shout out after the recent slew of beat em up, would be RPGs, that tanked their IPs.
I also miss fixed cameras or cameras that follow you ala old god of war. It makes action games more playable, you don't have half the enemies off screen thus requiring enemies to not attack off screen or other bad fixes.
Fixed camera angles framing things perfectly is a huge win for per-rendered backgrounds. I don't really care about getting to look around at some random foliage.
I was really expecting you to comment in this, when I started to see the news Square was publishing fantasian I could not be more hype. All puzzle pieces are coming to place, FF XVII FF VII re final game, and FF IX remake, what a better way to close your career
So here's a crack theory/copium. They said IX was being worked on by an external developer but was brought back in house (I don't remember if they said they weren't happy with it or JUST that it was brought back in house) but now Mistwalker (an external company) is working more closley with Square Enix ("In house") ... Yoshi P said he wasn't working on FF9 but Dawntrail has a lot of FF9 stuff for "Some reason" and its known that Sakaguchi LOVES FF14. ...What if *Mistwalker* was working on FF9 and the rumors about it being brought back In house are "True" but more in the sense that Mistwalker is working with Square than akin to what happened with Remake?
This game needs fully developed/integrated controller support and a turbo option. As for the Godfather... I would like him to collaborate on something with Square, but not sure on what. Perhaps more smaller traditional TB games like FF/Default multibox or the new Parasite Eve. But yeah, if he mentioned possible retirement, I dont think he wants to spend 5 years on a triple A game getting fully hands on.
I looooved the challenge of the original. And yes the perfectly framed backgrounds are missed! Also I’m gonna keep saying it where I can… add sakaguchi as a prime consultant on the ff9 remake. Maybe if I keep saying it, it’ll be true. Oh man if he came onboard for a full final fantasy I’d poop my pants.

How long is this game if it was only developed for mobile?
It's sad that they didn't mention Mistwalker at all except for a tiny little logo, which most don't even notice, at the end of the trailer.
I played most of Part 1. The only reason I didn't finish is because I would rather not pay Apple for a game I could not own in any physical capacity. The game has its issues, but I genuinely enjoyed it and had lots of fun with Fantasian.
Fantasian will most likely be a digital-only release, but I'm hoping it gets a special edition physical version at the very least.
Isn't this the exact same as mobile version but now it's re-release as a full version?
Gives me hope we might get a Xenogears/blade collab someday then....please reach out to Tetsuya Takahashi Squeenix.
I am so happy about Fantasian. I have been recommending this game to everyone for so long. It is so so good. It easily is FF quality and a great experience. And the art style is incredible! All the backgrounds and sets are literally hand made and then scanned in. It’s incredible.
This is great news! So glad it is going to be on everything!
So it’s digital only? No physical release?
Edit (18/10/2024): Good news, yes, it will have a physical release as confirmed by Square Enix themselves. In fact, I have already pre-ordered it as of now.
Not confirmed yet at the moment. I think it will have a physical release since Various Daylife (which is an Apple Arcade exclusive as well) does have a physical release from what I've noticed. Still need to wait for a confirmation first.
They need to do this with Chaos Rings next. Been wanting that for yeeaars
I'm gonna buy it mostly because this game is highly likely the last one to feature a full OST created by Uematsu himself (words by Sakaguchi himself).
If this does happen we might get PS5 versions of Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon that would be The most epic thing that could happen
Just when the world needed him the most - Sakaguchi returns!
watch square enix try to charge $59.99 for a $4.99 mobile game now, thats free for 95% of players with apple arcade.
I played it on Apple Arcade and will gladly pay full game price to play it again.
I'll pay it if it goes to Sakaguchi 👍🏼
I'll play it because I love Final Fantasy and Hironobu Sakaguchi!
The moment this was on the Direct i knew it was a must buy for me.
I love Lost Odyssey and wish Mistwalker would release it on the PS5!! I miss playing that game, even though, I have it for the XBox, it doesn't play well on that old system.
Lost Odyssey is owned by Microsoft. I wouldn't say it's impossible but it doesn't seem particularly likely.
I wish they would remake some of the PS1 era games in the style like that’s game! Final Fantasy eight and nine, resident evil one through three, it would be great! Love the pre-rendered background games
I don't know if publishing is the same thing as working together.
Suddenly Im wondering if he's been working with SE for awhile now, and it's actually him behind the FF9 Remake. As his final game, his magnus opus. He has stated many times FF9 is his personal favorite...
I hope Sakaguchi is working on the FF9 Remake!! It's also my personal favorite from the series!!
If fantasian does well we may get remasters of many of his old games that are lost to old consoles
Nobody is going to say anything about Vincent being in the game?
I had to stop playing part two because I had no idea where to go! While we’re talking comebacks, can we get a BRADYGAMES strategy guide!? 😅
holy hell this looks good. the bg especially.
Saggycoochie is a GENIUS!
I really hope this makes money so we can get more. Definetly going to buy this.
8:23 As someone who's played Xenogears, this is a massive plot spoiler.
i'm telling you, sakaguchi-sama is currently involved in a future final fantasy title. make no mistake.
wow, this is exactly what ive been missing from SE... yes, i love the AAA games and all FF titles but i miss the snes jrpg's and ps1 titles, turn based action and awesome storylines etc. yes yes yes from me, cant wait!
Hopefully we finish up strong with the last game for FFVII remake and then keep moving into a new golden era.
Sakaguchi stating Fantastian will be his last game before retiring is sad but understandable. This port to other systems I will be supporting 100% and i do recommend this game it was very fun and unique i enjoyed it. I really do hope Square will push Mistwalkers games forward even after the retirement. ❤
Im still trying to fina a way to play lost odyssey after i first played years ago.... 😢
Yoshi P is Hironobu successor all things considered.
Oh god no. Final Fantasy XVI is nothing like the games Sakaguchi is the father of
Facts. XIV is the pinnacle of the franchise so far.
No one is talking about 16 of which Yoshi P wasn’t even a director of you dolt.
Lost Odyssey is still one of my favourite games of all time. So excited for Fantasian
Hopefully they'll port Ash, The Last Story and Tetra Battle someday too.
I also miss fixed cameras or cameras that follow you ala old god of war. It makes action games more playable, you don't have half the enemies off screen thus requiring enemies to not attack off screen or other bad fixes.
Is this a switch exclusive or is it coming to PlayStation
All modern consoles ; PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 1:15
I played a little bit of it, it seems like a great game. I have 2 kids now so not a lot of time to play it.
Was there another "they" that wasn't Midori? Because I don't trust his SE info.
I want to see a physical release on Switch, the game is just too cute
Im super excited, and cant wait for even more games! Lost odyssey is definitely the best Rpg we've had in decades!
Would FF10 - 3 be possible Sakaguchi?
