I bought one of these for my father and he carries it with him everywhere. A great alternative to a Mora Companion. Which the leather sheath fits a Mora Companion perfectly. I do recommend everyone who uses these knives to go ahead and take the scales off and put some loctite on the screws, they will loosen up on you if you baton decent pieces of wood. They may have started adding loctite to their newer models but mine have not.
I have 10 BPS knives at this point. None of them have any significant handle alignment issues. The one exception worth mentioning was the carving axe, whose handles I had to realign and tighten after a session of hard use.
I have 7 bps knives, and all my handles have been fine. Lined up true. I like the wooden scales better than plastic so more bps than mora. Plus I can afford to try different styles with this company. Thanks for all your reviews and advice
I've found BPS knives to be nothing but fabulous. My BPS Adventurer is my go to Bushcraft knife. I don't believe anyone needs to spend more than 50 dollars for an excellent knife. I paid just under 40 dollars for my Adventurer and that included a small fero rod that has it's own spot on the outstanding sheath that comes with the knife.
I have the same knife and it has been amazing as a beginner bushcrafter. The ferro rod is really impressive too. A knife that meets expectations for a decent price is worth far more to me than these bespoke ones
I have 6 of the Adventurers. I believe i bought them all 2 at a time. One of them i had to make a minor adjustment to the scales. On another one, the scales were about 3/16th small. I contacted BPS and explained the issue. They said there was a problem with some of the scales drying out and shrinking. Within a week I had a new set from them that fit perfectly. Any company can have an issue, but the way they handle it is the true test of their merit. I did not hesitate to order the next two knives.
I have both knives and I will say that the Mora Clipper has a much thinner blade stock and with no ricasso (sharpening may be a bit more difficult). The index finger guard is slightly less pronounced on the BPS. Both knives feel amazing in the hand but the Mora is definately more grippy. To me the BPS is more balanced with it's full tang (though it definitely weighs more). I love both knives but would pick the BPS for personal preferences over the Mora. Great video, you're the best Mark!
I have this knife and one made by beavercraft both came with sharp burrs on the handle part as they are slightly unfinished GREAT blades and would buy again and will . the handle wood scales come off with ease and use small stone or pencil wrapped in sandpaper to remove the sharp edges. Also the same with the spine if you don't like it sharp. These are real nice carbon steel and the cutting edge needs no attention.
New subscriber here. I have three BPS knives, I bought them as just blanks from amazon. I like to make my own handle scales and sheaths. All three that I have seem to be decent steel. I just ordered one of these BS3's. I will discard the handles and do my own. For those that have "mis-aligned" handle-to-tang, a few minutes in your shop with a file, a small block of wood to wrap some sandpaper around, and just work with it to get a perfect fit.
Excellent review! I really like the pancake style sheath. Regarding the dull spine near the handle, I noticed years ago that Ray Mears often uses the spine near the tip of his knife to strike ferro rods, bracing the flat of the blade on the thumb of the hand holding the ferro rod to lever the tip precisely for scraping, and pushing with the thumb to throw sparks. It's a great technique that reminds of ones used for carving small objects like chess pieces or ornaments with a sloyd knife.
Among the million knives I own.. lol.. In my get home bag I have the BPS Adventurer stainless.. (always stainless for food) I will probably end up wrapping the handle.. And the Tereva Jarapooko 140 carbon.. I trust them both to do the job..
I HAVE THREE BPS KNIVES AND HAVE MODIFIED EACH BY SOAKING THE SCALES IN BOILED LINSEED OIL, ADDING RED G10 LINERS AND SWAPPING OUT THE BOLTS FOR BRASS ONES, THEY PERFORM LIKE A KNIFE COSTING TWICE AS MUCH
I believe in fate. I have a few BPS knives and they are excellent. I have been looking at this model for the last few months. Your video just came up and something said to me today is the day I have to order it. So I paused your video, went to Amazon and there was a double discount. So I pressed the little button thingy and it should be here soon. So now I'm back watching the rest of your video. I know it looks like a a mora knife but there is something about wooden handles and leather sheaths that beat plastic. For the price and what you're getting I don't mind doing a little bit of work because even if the spine was very very sharp sooner or later you would have to resharpen it. These little things don't bother me. I'm retired Carpenter so we're always fixing our tools. Also I don't really need it for wood processing just cutting up other stuff.
Take the knife apart and clean the tang with rubbing alcohol. Epoxy the handles on while tightening the handle screws back up. Of course ensure perfect scale alignment. Wipe off any excess epoxy that oozes out. This will prevent any future movement of the scales plus it will also prevent moisture from getting under the wood. Adding a few coats of Tung oil while sanding between coats with super fine steel wool, with improve the looks and water resistance of the wooden scales.
I have several BPS knives, and I am impressed with their quality and performance. I have noted that a couple of them are "clones", or rather, interpretations of other popular knives, the Mora Companion and Condor Bushlore. In some aspects, I think the BPS versions are better than the originals.
Great review. I'd love to see how you work on the spine to get better scraping action. I've been told by other manufacturers not to sharpen the spine. That didn't make sense to me, because the spine definitely gets dull with a lot of use.
Mark, I have a couple of NedFoss blades. I'd be curious to hear your take on them. I'll look thru you vids to see if you have reviewed them. I bought them, removed the G10 scales, and made wood scales for them.
I would not advise people gluing or painting underneath the scales, I painted some before and the paint didn't cure before I put them on and it was just like glue, I had to literally beat them off with a mallet.and those were micarta scales on a RAT5, those wooden scales will break. ...I take mine off and put a coat of Super Lube underneath them for added protection against water, works like a charm. and I can still remove them and check for rust occasionally.
Looks like a great knife, wish they hadn't ripped off Mora so blatantly. I just ordered a cudeman sanabria mini bushcraft knife and am eager to see how it holds up. Will probably review on my channel if it's a keeper. Great review btw!
I don’t think the dull spine hear the handle is an issue. I recently sharpened a Grohmann, but left the part near the handle (about an inch after the gimping) dull to keep it easy on my thumb. Yes I use my thumb hear the tip sometimes, but not that much. I don’t get why they didn’t go flush with the spine and handle though. It’s full tang, so it’d be better. I guess they just wanted to knock off the Mora. Nice for the price, but gotta do better than that Mark. 😊
@@MarkYoungBushcraft I love the affordable price, but something so simple as a handle that moves to the point of sometimes hurting your hand is more than I can accept. Do they at least have a distributor in canada? If not, exchanges are not an option. No BPS for me then
Mark I plan on 3d printing some scale spacers for the BPS knives to make their handles wider. Would just need some new longer screws which should be able to be picked up at any local hardware store.
Sounds good. You may find the current screws have enough travel to grip. You may also be able to counter sink them a bit to reach if required. Thanks for commenting
After my first BPS knife, I bought several more. Gave a couple as gifts to nephews and kept 3 for myself. Yes, I would agree that the fit and finish of the handles is not as perfect as it could be but I think that for the price point and the high quality leather sheath…BPS knives are a freakin bargain. Expecting the same finish quality on a knife a quarter of the price is not realistic. BPS’s blade steel and machining is where they put their value. The sheaths as well. I’ve not found a comparable knife from any manufacturer in the price range. Especially one that includes a leather sheath.
G'day Mark, personally I've never had an issue with Mora's rat tangs, though plenty of folks have, and fair enough too for on the trail IMO. And also, fair to say, hence the introduction of the Garberg, and sure good knife, (without being outstanding, as far as I can ascertain), with 14C, or carbon, and a coulpa sheath options ......... though @ a price Mora fans weren't used to. (Dont even mention those ridiculously priced models that came out in recent times, cant even remember what they're called, .......instant switch off). I'm sure Mora thought about it, but ultimately they missed a trick and I reckon this one seeks to address/capitalise on where Mora should have gone, ..... at least in parallel with the Garberg. Cheers Duke. P.S. oh yeah, just reading a few other comments Re; sharp spine ..... yeah good to have ......unless you are a carver ; ) I always go with a dedicated ferro scraper, paracord loop and "spring clipped" to the rod, (for retention and easy separation when in use). And then the lot is "cow hitched" or "larks headed" to my belt. They aint going anywhere and even if, in the unlikely event, I'm separated from my primary and secondary blades and folding saw, ...... fire, being so detrimental, is always at hand. Furthermore, since I carry a 6 in half round metal file, (for bugger all size/weight), it can serve as a mighty fine back up scraper itself, or you can tune/burr a 90 deg spine in the field, ..... as well as many other applications.
Hi Duke. All good points on the Mora. I have had no issues either with stick tangs. Funny how much everyone values a sharp spine, Great until you want to carve. Thanks
