Decluttering My Nail Polish Collection

- Hi everyone! In this (very long) video, I show my entire nail polish collection and declutter a whole bunch. I had a request to do more of a talk-through so I didn't do the fast-forward footage I normally do with my other decluttering videos... I'm thinking of going back to the fast-forward footage because this video ended up being so long even though I edited it down a lot. Please let me know which you prefer!
My next step is to work on a nail polish swatching series, where I swatch/wear 10-15 nail polishes, show them in a video, and explain which ones I'm keeping. The first video in this series should be up by the end of January. :)
About Decluttering 101:
In Aug/14, I embarked on a little something I dubbed "Decluttering 101" - basically, I try to declutter for at least 10 minutes and let go of at least 1 item every single day. I have been loving the results but I still have a long journey ahead. I set a goal at the beginning of this year to finish the bulk of my decluttering by Jun 30/15 so we'll see how it goes!

lol it was hard to let go of the ones i did, and towards the end, i found i was keeping more and more. i really have to pare down a little more because i have a lot that look exactly the same... dupes upon dupes upon dupes! i wish we lived closer too. we'd have so much fun!! :) xx

For nail polishes, I only keep half of my OPI, and all of my Deborah Lippmann. Others are given away.

Wow, over 100 polishes eliminated from your collection, amazing! Love that you have so many different brands. I literally own less than 20 bottles of nail polish, so this was fascinating to watch (not kidding)!

This video made me cackle with laughter. It started out with some brutal cuts and by the end "I'm gonna keep all of them". Particularly laughed at the reds that 'all look the same, you can't tell the difference on the nail... I'm keeping all of them.' Really enjoyed watching this 👍

L'Oreal "charmed I'm sure" is one of my FAVOURITE nail polishes ever! I always have a bottle in my collection :) As well as Essie "Pennytalk"
i pulled charmed i'm sure to wear in february after reading your comment! i may try pennytalk as well... i've seen swatches of it but i don't think i've ever tried it myself. :)
petitepearstyle I am just about to do my nails as I type. I will be alternating "Charmed I'm sure" and ORLY "Rage", and as an accent nail my ring finger will also have Revlon's "Sparkling" (a pink chunky glitter)

LOL while I'm watching you declutter your collection, I'm writing down shades that I would like to pick up for myself! I still haven't moved my nail polishes to the new house... I don't nearly have as many as you, but I'm dreading transporting them. I almost always break at least one bottle :|.. Awesome job decluttering! Can't wait to watch the lippy purge :)

@KathleenP- i find it amazing that you have 20 polishes... i actually used to have around that many before i went crazy (post youtube of course). i hope to let go of another 1/3 of my collection over the next couple months but it's going to be tough...
Great job paring down your collection! I have a question about your swatch sticks - how do you label them? I have oodles hanging around waiting for me to swatch my polishes but I'm not sure where to start with the labelling aspect.
thank you! i use avery labels. i was really fussed about it in the beginning, but after a while, i just really wanted to get it done. i basically cut one label into three lengthwise (i don't measure or anything... i just eyeball it) and then i write the name of the polish on it. it's not the prettiest because my printing is inconsistent but it works. :)
I used to write on my swatch sticks in permanent marker but now I use a label maker which is much neater. I got the label maker off Amazon.
@Megan Rumney - sorry i haven't had a chance to check but i will post here once i do!
It would be so hard to let go of the Julep's since they are so small haha :) I really need to do this for my collection... also have probably close to 400... have stopped buying as many but there are still so many! Now I have been really into indie polishes... they are all so different I feel like I can justify it... :|

it's so true... i wanted to hang onto all my julep polishes because they are so easy to store and line up so nicely! i only have a few indies... they are so beautiful and unique. thanks so much - i will keep doing talk-throughs for the rest of my decluttering videos. have a great weekend! :)

I always mark on the bottle in the UPC code white area with a pen when I use a polish that way I really now what I use and what can go away

You are lucky you still have the old version of the Sally Hansen Pacific Blue, I recently ran out and when I went to go repurchase it, it was a reformulated and had glitter in it.
i heard that it was reformulated. :( why mess with a great thing? i love the old version... it is perfect.
I know :( They wanted to change things up. Sally Hansen seemed to have gotten a lot of grief for the change and are looking into more testing. instagram.com/p/pefMiSrU1T/ I just hope the old version comes back the opacity and colour can't be beat.

Good job :) I'm LOVING Julep Julianne right now. I keep using it lol I had to force myself to use other polishes just so I could have Julianne for a little bit longer. Did you get rid of Julep Camille (glitters with light coverage)? It's such a pretty color and really transforms any other polish you have on
i just checked my nail polish "inventory" (excel spreadsheet) and i actually didn't have camille! it sounds really pretty.
It is! Do you no longer receive Julep then? Do you happen to know the name of the first light Julep glitter in the "glitters with light coverage" section? I really like it and I want to see if I have that one (now that I know it's not Camille)
i know exactly the one you mean... i looked up the swatch and it was actually one of the 6 or 7 polishes that i rescued... it's called brenda. :)
ugh I don't have that one! lol I guess it's okay, I do have a ton of similar ones that I need to go through first...I'm glad that you rescued that one. It will look great on you :)

Great job. I'm decluttering my nail polish and was hoping to donate the ones I don't want so someone else can use them - thanks for the idea to take them to Goodwill, I think I'll do that.

Thanks so much! I don't collect nail polish anymore but I do a makeup inventory every year or so where I show what I still have in terms of nail polish. I think I'll be recording the next one in a few months. :)

i used to take the julep box every month and sometimes i would upgrade too! it's amazing how quickly my collection built up...

lol i love watching declutter vids, honestly this one is not helpful I own 4 nail polishes ad I am thinking of getting rid of one that I do not "love" lol I mean why own more than just one f each color yes you are getting rid of many but you are keeping four or five of the same color I literally own a dark red, a pinky red, a nude pink and a nude brown that will match everything and I will always be wearing one of my favs
+Natalie Ayala lol thanks for your honesty! one of my friends was just telling me yesterday that she has 2 nail polishes for the fall/winter and 2 for the spring/summer so she actually finishes them over the 6 month period and buys more each season. i find that amazing as well as your collection of 3/4 nail polishes... i am hoping to narrow my collection down a lot more but it is going to take me some time as i find it hard to part with products. everyone is different and, in this video, i am just trying to document my progress.
yes ofcourse I was able to declutter down to a few items just about every category except books I find it the most difficult, I got rid of many and are now in a box to donate to the library but I find myelf reaching into the pile to keep more and I am keeping many, I wish I could declutter more books but that is my downfall the saddest part is- I dnt even like to read lol
I have way too many nail polishes too! It's one of my favorite things to buy though because I love all the fun colors. I started a Project Polish as a way to help me use up some of my collection: rissajaneen.com/project-polish-2015/ I have a metal nail polish rack in my bathroom, and I have told myself that I can't buy any more polishes because they won't fit on the rack! Good job decluttering and letting go!
