Jay-z's biggest flex in his music is that he's authentic. He's really from the streets and all the other rappers are just making shit up. Back when 2pac decided it would be a good idea to start a fight with literally every east coast rapper at once he ran into Nas at a park in New York. There are interviews about the confrontation online but basically after a conversation and some mutual respect 2pac took all references to Nas out of his diss tracks. When Nas started the track with 2pac saying fuck Jay-z that was hard as hell because Nas is the only east coast rapper you couldn't grab a sample of 2pac dissing. That's two seconds in and it gets worse from there. Nas proceeds to recount a hip hop history that takes Jay-z's image of being from the streets and burns it to the ground. It's not a diss track as much as it is a dissection. He points out everyone who Jay-z took from including Jaz-o. He promised to fuck with his soul like ether and man did he deliver. What's funny is Jay-z said Nas went from top 10 to not in the conversation when in fact almost everyone puts Nas top 3 and nobody serious puts Jay-z top 5, most don't even put him top 10. The interview Jay-z had after this track where he was apologizing tells you all you need to know about why you don't fuck with Nas. Jay-z will continue to sell records because he makes pop songs for people who don't know much about hip hop. The people whose opinion Jay-z cares about though know that Nas destroyed him. Twenty years later Jay-z is still doing petty album drops to try to get at Nas. That's how deep this track cut.
