Part 1: • Ed Lover: Virgil Abloh...
--------
In this clip, Ed Lover shared his thoughts on some of the biggest debates in hip-hop, starting off with who won the battle between Nas and Jay-Z. Ed explained that he thinks Nas "spanked" Jay-Z, adding that "Ether" was harder than "Takeover," because Nas focused solely on Jay-Z. You can hear more of the discussion above.

The fact that the word Ether became a phrase meaning destroy, obliterated, etc show you how powerful that record was and still is. Hip hop will never see that level of competition like that again to many wack rappers who don't take lyrics seriously anymore.
Ridiculous argument it just rolls off the tongue better that's literally it you got takeovered doesn't sound as good right you got hit em up'd doesn't sound as good right you got no vaselined doesn't sound as good right.......that whole argument is so damn stupid

Jay was not just obsessed with nas he was infatuated with him, and nas knew it that’s why he never got on any of jays songs previously he sensed his fanboy energy.

FYI...the "Fuck Jay-Z" intro is actually Tupac saying it. Nas revealed it in an interview. That makes the line soooo much harder!!!
Ed lover aint with the politics. Nas is the people's CHAMP while Jay is the industry's champ. The people voted Nas aka Maximus.
Absolutely because after he did an interview with Sway he said he felt like Muhammad Ali when he did Ether Nas is the Peoples Champ period
When I first heard Ether I could feel Jay Z's soul being buried. IMO with diss tracks Ether is in my top 5!
Should be number 1.

I was there in real time when Jay came at mobb deep and Nas . The Nas Stillmatic freestyle, Jay dropping THE BLUEPRINT. Nas dropping STILLMATIC. I was there. And the battle was so so so BIG for the hip hop community. ....that any rapper who had some shit in his chest against another rapper, immediately got in the studio and took it out of their chest . Because....the 2 greatest were battling each other. People started getting in panic because they thought the battle was going to end off like Pac and biggie. Killing each other. People enjoyed what was happening but at the same time everyone was like....shit. this is going too far. !!!! Nas won because one simple thing....JAY MISTAKE. by responding to ether with a garbage freestyle " super ugly " it sounded like a desperate man .who didn't know what to do under the pressure ether put him through.. thats when hot 97 said .Jay lost . case closed..
To make things worse Pitchfork was big on reviews and it gave The Blueprint an 8.7 rating whereas stillmatic got a 9.1
"I don't kill soloists, only kill squads" -Nas
Your da man
"Negro Please".... that was one of the finniest lines ever. haha
You can play all Jay z songs in that battle, but when you play Ether it just hits different. The dude went and made 2 more songs and cried on the radio to Angie Martinez
C'mon....no love for the Stillmatic freestyle? Nas destroyed the whole Rocafella roster with that joint then decapitated Jay with Ether.

Ether was just so lethal and direct!
Queens niggas react differently to either. It was 🔥but if you ask a queens guy they will say it’s the best song of all time, not beef record but overall. Personally I thought nas could have went harder
You are right that Nas could have gone harder which is why Nas is the most dangerous mC and the goat in my eyes. Even em didn't want that smoke with Nas.
@@jaystacks5249 It was the best battle record of all time, absolutely. Maybe even goat beat as well. To me, it sounded like a rawer dipset beat. Im from Tx
The craziest thing was Takeover dropped September 11.. Nas waited to Dec 4 to drop Ether on Jay-Z birthday.. That was the most petty shit ever 🤣 .. Jay-Z was on Angie Martinez and you can hear the hurt in his voice. Jay-Z stopped fucking with Jaz, got rid of Dame, stopped being a player and got married.. Nas changed that mans life and did Jay-Z a favor in reality because nobody ever told Jay-Z how people really view him.
Damn, never looked at it that way. I wonder if he looked in the mirror ad was like " damn, I do look like a camel" lol or " shit, I look like JJ Evans and I got whiskers like a rat"
Shit Jay z made nas better at his art and lit a fire in him. Listen how nas sounded on his first 4 albums and how he sounds from stillmatic till now. I see a lot of difference like Jay z said he gave him life when n***** forgot he mc'd. Jay z star power at the time made nas relevant again.

Nas killed Jay z and His crew not even a debate. Nas THE best to ever do it. 🐐
But Jay Z survived because like Nas said you my brother but you sold your soul for riches, Jay Z is definitely with that group

Ether ain’t nothin to play with. Arguably the greatest diss ever. Would love to see a joint album with Jay and Nas for the culture
I heard this live on the radio as a kid. My mother was like you coming in the store? I was like I can't miss this. Nas totally destroyed Jay. That's why Jay still shade him today dropping on the same day as him multiple times. That's admittance from Jay that he lost that battle. Jay was trying to he cute. Nas went for his head.
Your right but in recent memory I don’t think Jay dropping a featured verse on a Pharrell song is tryna step on Nas’ album day and if it was it didn’t work at all. Jay is petty but he’s not an idiot
The song hit so hard that ETHER became a metaphor down to this day. Remy Ma jacked it (shETHER) to get at Nicki. When someone loses a battle, its said, "you got ETHERED.."
Absolutely no one says or references The Take Over, ever..
Remi did all that and still invisible😂😂😂
i love Remy, but thats exactly why no one should even be touching it in any capacity. the name, the beat, nothing.

Factss...i still bump ether till this day over and over like its a club hit
Takeover is a classic record definitely however Ether was like a megaton bomb when it dropped.
Ether gives Sean Carter nightmares till this day.
I love Ed for this segment. Much respect!!
That was actually Tupac saying “Fuck Jay-Z” in the intro of Ether. And the reason it took Nas so long to respond was because, he wasn’t going to respond. His brother Jungle pushed him and forced him to respond until Nas finally acquiesced to his encouragement.
The truth, some people love to spread lies and nonsense to keep pushing the fact that they love Nas, but hate Jay Z. It can't be just two dope rappers, but you have to down one to make the other look good.
@@marcusjames9353 Is that not what Jay Z and Memphis Bleek did? Stop with the nonsense bro, Jay made a huge mistake, jumping in with bleek. Nas was not the one who reached.

Indeed!
The fact that people still debate on who won after Ether dropped is funny to me. Jay-Z even admitted that he lost. End of discussion. I heard Nas asked Rakim for advice on if he was to respond to the Takeover.

I can't remember the song name but Jay admitted it one of his tracks. To be honest his whole camp including Dame Dash had already publicly accepted defeat, so Jay kinda knew it but he ain't have to say it, you can hear Dame say it in multiple interviews on here...., Rocafella artists like Peedy crack confirmed saying that was the first time they ever saw the label look shaky , considering how strong they were then.
@Shawn Brown
Yeah, that doesn't win battles.
@Shawn Brown
Think about it, you're mad right now because you know deep down inside, that Jay lost. Now you're bringing up peripheral issues, *most of it made up,* to make yourself feel better for your icon getting smashed. It also explains your need to argue with everyone who disagrees... quite exhausting.
But this isn't personal for us. Most of us are huge Jigga fans. But you gotta call a spade a spade...
*Jay's mentor tore him a new one.* Sometimes that sorta thing happens.

Were you abused as a child? Scared to smile? They called you ugly?
Great depiction of that era in time and the battle. Ed lover explained exactly why NAS beat Jay. He was saying everything streets were saying about Jay at the time. It's a big reason HOV stepped back for awhile because people were tired of hearing Hov talk money all the time and disrespecting women. Only problem with Ether is that NAS refuses to perform it till this day. Imagine if KRS-ONE never performed the Bridge is over how that would've affected his legacy. With Nas, imagine how much bigger his shows would be if 20k or more screaming fans waiting to hear the gunshots and recite all the lyrics to Ether. Nas wouldn't need to make another record; just perform that record for the next 20 years.
Difference is that Nas legacy was already stamped without ether. Krsone most likely wouldn't exist if it weren't for the Bridge is ova. Krs even admitted this himself. Ether just enhanced already a legends career.
@@bobt9705 it was but it wasn't because your only as good as your last album. Nas would not be as revered if had not battled Jay-Z and won. Nas legacy was at a crossroad at that point and he needed rejuvenation. But, my point is not to compare KRS-ONE career to Nas, its just Nas refusal to perform arguably his biggest record live hurts.
@@bravedave90 without the battle Nas would've still come back
Takeover had one verse for nas with all opinions and one fact at the end about his baby moms. Ether was all facts and topped it off with “ you popped shit and apologized nigga , just ask kiss”. Which Jada also confirmed that on drink champs. Killed jay street cred.
Nas ripped jayz apart straight facts

Glad he mentioned Mobb Deep. I swear it's "hip hop heads" that think all of "Takeover" is about Nas.
He was really just talking about Prodigy. Rest in Peace P.
Jay z is DEFINITELY a game-changing artist, but that "clap back" from Nas with either is something that's VERY hard to come back from against a person like nas!! The takeover WAS nice though, but nas on ETHER just methodically took Jay z apart on that track!!
That was the best explanation I've heard on this matter... I approve!
I remember when Ether dropped in NYC. That song had NYC in a headlock.
When that beat drops...it makes you wanna sit and pay attention, like a bombshell is about to drop! Gen-Gen

Put them in any order you like and still can't get it wrong . But to me ether is the best diss track ever . And the funniest part is that came from the most respectfully artists in the game . Being a great artist is one thing but being a great human being is something entirely different and Nas ticks both boxes .
That’s my favourite line as well
I’m not surprised they did a collaboration because jay-z is smart the one method is true to this day “ if you can’t beat them then join them “ NAS was from the streets and Jay -z was telling stories about the streets but in my opinion NAS will forever be the Goat
Jay was from the streets bruh 😂😂. How old are you?
