Gloom is just the awkward teen years of that evolution line. Can't get away with being cute anymore but isn't particularly good at anything yet to compensate. Also dealing with... bodily changes.
I adore middle stage pokemon and they never seem to get the spotlight in challenge videos, so I'm really happy to see this. Gloom is also my favorite pokemon
I think it might have been faster to route out xp to be lvl 26 before the Oddish trainer and then just use the 2 rare candies from Mt Moon and Cerulean backyard.

@@Skarfar90 I dunno, I think that would be too little of a contest. Gloom's pretty bad, while Weepinbell is quite good. Their third stage forms performed relatively closely, which honestly surprised me, but I think Growth on Weepinbell and better learnsets will make it an easy win. A contest of middle evos I think might work better is Weepinbell vs Poliwhirl. Both have not terrible stats, both have access to boosting moves, both will quickly trounce Brock.
Hi, Scott. Good work on today's video. I was thinking even at 1st run that you had 2 rare candies available before nugget bridge. As seen later, they are not needed afterwards, but sprinting to level 28 is the important step in this run. For what I see in the 2nd playthrough, you could have cut around 4 real-time mins if you use them there, with practically no further issues A thing to keep in mind for future videos that have a similar issue 🙂 Greetings
Poor Gloom…no wonder it has the name it does…thinking about it, while you wouldn’t have as many Rare Candies later on in the game, it could be worth it to level up to 26 and then use the two available Rare Candies to get to level 28, learning Acid in a faster fashion. Plus that way, you can access higher level trainers more quickly, getting experience from them as opposed to like…level 10 Spearow and Sandshrew in the wild. Other than that, very nicely done! I’m excited for whenever Weepinbell gets its solo!
Fun video, poor sucky gloom, still less crap than I was expecting. For the record, if you get stuck in Azalea town in gen 2, if you have a grass or water type, or really anything with good special attack and not electric, if you go into the cave, go down to the floor where you get the swift tm. The mobs there give much better xp than the floor above. Also, finally, my obligatory plug of pitching Oy the zigzagoon in pokemon emerald in honor of the best Billy-bumbler
C'mon, Scott! Gloom can totally Minimum Battles the game, you just need a few hundred resets on Jessie and James 😂 No worries, I'll do it! Awesome run, great time with one that feels terrible the whole way... I think Pokemon like Butterfree and fall into a similar vein.
Now this! Is a treat! One of my favorite middle evolutions ever. Gloom is so great, and I can't wait for it to CRUSH POKEMON YELLOW! C'mon A tier! Not even 15 minutes in and my heart is breaking. Starting with absorb hurts
Gloom was having a really tough early game, especially with random trainers with flying or poison types, because it doesn't have the right move to hit these pokemon with neutral damage, other than bide, and that can definitely say a lot about a Pokemon's level up moveset.🤔 I think that your routing was really well thought-out. Because you could manipulate your experience points in a such way that you won't level up during battles against Gloom's major walls for this run, with ton of stat experience ,that in the end has benefited Gloom against these walls in the second run. Well done!👏👏👏 Due to all of this hard work, Gloom got a happy ending and some nice results at the end of this run.☺️
That battle vs the Oddish girl reminded me of that person who set up an AI tournament of every NPC in RBY. The longest battle was two Oddish Lasses who just kept using Absorb on each other before the battle timed out at like 300 turns or something lol
Another great video, thanks for the content Scott, really appreciating the amount of content you are putting out, just don’t burn yourself out dude, look after yourself! ❤
very nicely done, I had a feeling Gloom would do ok, right in the middle of Oddish and Vileplume, appropriate for a mid evolution, I looked at the difference between Gloom and Vileplume, there are two big things, both in the moveset, Vileplum gets Acid far sooner and it gets Body Slam, with those, Gloom would be just as good as Vileplume I think, I look forward to you doing Weepingbel (lets face it, you did Gloom, Weepingbel makes sense to come next)
Fantastic video Scott (as always). It would be pretty hilarious to see artwork of the Mew Junior Trainer (as in, a Junior Trainer with a Mew). Sadly he comes up so rarely, so it wouldn't be worth :( Keep going with the awesome videos :D
My predictions before even watching. + pretty good early game (since it's super effective against Brock/Misty and it resists Surge's thunderbolt) + a chance to get ahead in xp early game ( grind Mt Moon, plus Rock Tunnel, plus SS Anne trainers and pokemon) + sleep powder plus swords dance plus physical move = niche and hype! :D + Acid is bad... but is technically a physical move with STAB - limited learnset (so TM Mega drain and TM take down or double egde might be needed) - Sabrina will be a menace with strong psychic types - Koga will put up a bigger fight than expected (with bug/poison types that carry psychic) - First reset caused due to Gloom's relatively low speed ( ;) yeah. Sorry. I think there will be resets.. as much as I like Gloom) - Hitting Agatha's ghosts might be a bit tough. Alright! Fingers crossed Scott! We're clickin' play!
Y'know, Gloom may not be perfect for this challenge. But oh boy is its sprite in Pokemon Stadium outstanding. Honestly, I feel like Vileplume, its evolution, got a better go at it as a E4 representative. Although I will never understand why they painted it black just to fill a "dark type" slot.
@@myggmastaren3365 Ah. But then it would be native to the gen 2 game and get boosted exp from the trade, no? I'm pointing that out because Scott used Abra with the gen 2 punch TMs once which could've been traded back and forth to achieve that.
12 minutes on the clock into the first playthrough all I can think is you're self-sabotaging Gloom by wanting to battle that Rocket. You could easily just fight some Geodudes in random battles and get whatever level up you need for Jessie and James that way. Also am I incorrect to assume you never fought that Rocket in other videos? It's a trainer you can skip even if you want to grab the TM there. I'm not sure why you would choose to battle him with a mon with such a clear disadvantage against him.
This playthrough makes me think Weepinbell will do a lot better than Gloom, if only because of Growth and Wrap for early game, but will probably have some troubles thanks to not having the killing power of Victreebel and will need to set up for more fights, slowing it down more.
Wouldn't it be a time safe to fight Brock and the trainer first, to get higher lvl and then go back and deal more damage to the bugs in the forest? Same expyield but maybe a bit faster ..?
Maybe? You'll be a slightly higher level, and deal a little more damage with absorb, but you'll still be dealing a lot of damage with poison, so I doubt you'd gain more than a turn, /maybe/ two per fight, and you have to do a little bit of extra walking. Something to investigate to be sure
"i want to take a moment to remind you all of my seel playthrough" it's a hilarious coincidence that i just finished watching that video right before this one
It took Gloom roughly 17 minutes to beat Rival 2 in its first playthrough. On its first playthrough, Vileplume was out of Rock Tunnel at 17 minutes. It's amazing how much of a difference starting with Sleep Powder, Petal Dance, and Acid makes. I think if Gloom started with those moves, it would probably be not too far behind its evolution, probably about to enter Rock Tunnel at 17 minutes.
Mm, notably Vileplume still finished the game at level 59 in Scotts other playthrough, only a small difference. The major benefit late game, aside from the stats, is that Vileplume also gets bodyslam!
Yea more gen 1 lol yessss. More Pokémon. Gloom I say b tier 1:11 Welp bout to find out. Keep up the great vids I’m always interested in what Scott is thinking lol 😎
Sorry if it's getting repetitive to say, but I really think Double Edge fills in a niche for Pokemon that don't get good physical moves, especially normal types and/or pokemon who get swords dance. In Gloom's case especially, because it can sleep powder, set up, and then (usually) sweep without concern for recoil pushing it over the edge. Even against the champion, the only trainer with 6 pokemon, 1/4 of the total HP is 241, so as long as you could get a sleep in on the Exeggcutor or mega drain the Cloyster you would be fine.

Ultimately it didn't matter but I am curious.
That's what i call early game purgatory. The pokemon is just strong enough to win the battles but in the process it wastes too much pp so you have to run back and forth from pokecenter. This situation makes you wish this pokemon was weaker with less moves so you could use struggle.
You know Scott, you always choose the Dome Fossil, whereas MDB always chooses the Helix... It would be AWESOME to see you guys do Kabutops V. Omastar race in a collab video. 😁😁😁
With mega drain’s recovery to counteract it’s recoil, takedown could have helped gloom’s match up against the Pokémon that resisted gloom’s stabs with the added benefit of being boosted by swords dance:
