Thumbs up if you enjoyed this video! Let's get it to 150 likes :)
*Although I did not clearly state the Silverado was a scam, it's a car that should be avoided. As I said, you should be very wary in these situations and always AT LEAST ask for more pictures and information. Never buy something without seeing it in person first.
Auto Autopsy for KBB to be accurate, you need specific trim level, optional equipment, and colors otherwise it is very easy for the seller to tell you to piss off with your KBB estimate. The difference between white and black or cloth or leather interior is mind boggling
Auto Autopsy my kbb search with everything in the ad came out to $4200
Auto Autopsy hey this video is a bit old now and its harder to follow directions it would really help if you made a new one the video still helped a lot thanks!
"Dealers have someone professionally check it out".... you've never even had a good chat to a dealer or a mechanic have you.... these guys KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR and do it themselves in about 5 minutes. Hell I know most of the tricks myself and I'm not a mechanic or dealer. And the fact that you had to load the kelley blue book.... FAIL. You should have a feel on the general pricing without needing some blue book BS. Great deals aren't had within the first 10 photos after you set a price. In real estate you get one bargain in every 100 houses. In cars it's fairly high numbers but not that high. There's ALWAYS STUFF that is undervalued but ugly so nobody gets it. I have ALWAYS HIT the jackpot buying top notch cars that are the best of their age for ALWAYS a few thousand under standard prices.
Its hard to trust anyone online these days!!!!
Some sellers go to KBB and look up the value but they list the car at retail value and are insulted when you point out the fact that retail and private party values are two completely different things.
lol, its funny!
They are fucken idiots. I tell em to keep that shit and choke on it.
seymore butts lmaoo
I've seen private sellers post vehicles for sale under $5k and when I contact them asking if the vehicle is still available they tell me the price listed is the "down payment".... like, what? I had one person call me a clown for offering them the amount they listed it for... it' exhausting!
It’s because they’re fucking stipid
Nice Vid,
Please do one about how to inspect properly.
Thumbs up👍
Thanks man! Will do!
Nice video. Great content. That's exactly how I find deals.
Thanks!
7:19 salvage title means that a claim has been made on it so a car that's never been claimed to insurance will stay clean title.
Dang so many lemons selling for around 5k in my area. Thank goodness that I watched this video and for you making this video.
Good luck with your car purchase :) Glad I could help!
Sick bro that was some killer deals bro!
Ye bro!
Edmunds.com IS WAY BETTER THAN KBB FOR THE BUYER. SELLERS HATE EDMUNDS WHICH IS FAR MORE FAIR FOR THE BUYER.
AUTO NATION, KBB, & EDMUNDS ARE OWNED BY A MONOPOLY PARENT COMPANY THAT OWNS A LOT OF LARGE INDEPENDENT AUTO OUTFITS SO THEY WRITE THE NUMBERS TO MAKE MORE MONEY. SO GO WITH EDMUNDS IF BUYING, USE KBB IF SELLING.
NEVER NEVER NEVER PAY A LOT OF MONEY FOR A VEHICLE OVER 10 YEARS OLD, OR OVER 135K MILES.
ANY VEHICLE WITH ANY AMOUNT OF RUST IS CLASSIFIED AS "ROUGH" ON EDMUNDS, AND ON THE LOW SIDE ON KBB RANGE OR "FAIR". NEVER OVERPAY ESPECIALLY ON TRUCKS. THEY ARE RIDICULOUSLY PRICED BY PRIVATE PARTIES, AND MORE BY DEALERS. DONT LET SELLERS TELL YOU THAT RUST IS OK ON TRUCKS. BS BS BS!!!
RUST IS RUST ON ANYTHING. IF YOU ARE A SELLER, TAKE OFF THE DAMN RUST, PRIME, AND REPAINT IF YOU WANT MORE FOR YOUR VEHICLE.
DONT JUST LOOK AT KBB AND PICK GOOD, EXCELLENT, DO NOTHING BY WAY OF MAINTENANCE, DETAIL, ETC, WHILE ASKING FOR ALL THE WOOD.
FYI, DEALERS ARE NOW FLOODING CRAIGSLIST, OFFERUP, LETGO, ET AL, DISGUISING AS PRIVATE SELLERS. YOU CAN SPOT THEM BY THEIR HIGH PRICES, OR LOW LOW PRICE FOR NEW MODELS, THAT ENDS UP BEING THE DOWN PAYMENT. DONT FALL FOR IT. ALSO WATCH OUT FOR ODOMETER ROLL BACKS MORE EASILY DONE ON ELECTRONIC DIGITAL MILAGE Vs THE OLD ROLLOVER TYPES. RUN A CARFAX BEFORE YOU HAND OVER YOUR CASH. VINAUDIT IS WAY CHEAPER THAN CARFAX ($10/REPORT). MORE & MORE PRIVATE SELLERS & DEALERS ARE ROLLING BACK ODOMETERS ON THEIR HIGH MILEAGE VEHICLES TO UNSUSPECTING BUYERS. SUSPECT THIS IF THEY WONT GIVE YOU THE VIN NUMBER OVER THE PHONE, EMAIL, OR TEXT. IT COULD ALSO BE FOR AN ENCUMBERED TITLE REASON.
ALWAYS ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD MECHANIC HOIST UP THE VEHICLE, TO SEE THE UNDERCARRIAGE. TO SEE EVERYTHING, IT MUST BE UP IN THE AIR. HAVE HIM LOOK UNDER THE HOOD, DRIVE THE CAR, AND GIVE YOU HIS OPINION. TRUST ME, ITS Absolutely WORTH THE $25 TO $100 depending on the area. Assume, there is a reason, someone is selling their vehicle. Usually, something is wrong with it. Find out what is/are wrong. Sellers will try to hide, or mask them. Then ask you to overpay hoping you wont find out. Fork over your cash, find out days later about that check engine light that was erased presale, and you are royally screwed. Too late homie. Thats why you scan with OBDII, or have a good mechanic with a scanner, or Autozone (free) do it for you. Above all ensure a good power train, AC, or any system that is expensive to fix. For each vehicle, know the common problems. Go to Repairpal.com, to get this info. They will also find you good local mechanics, tell you how much items will cost to fix (parts & Labor), etc.
Sometimes people will sell rather than perform an expensive maintenance, such as changing a timing belt (Hyundai) @ 60k miles.
Do your research. Know the expensive services. Check for them, assume you'll be stuck bringing the vehicle to updated maintenance schedule. Always change all fluids after you buy a used vehicle, unless there is a way to confirm when last service was performed. People lie. Get proof!
Bottom line, DONT GET STUCK HOLDING THE BAG!!! SELLERS ARE LIARS!!! BUYERS ARE ALSO LIARS TO A USED CAR PROFESSIONAL.
I WAS A DEALER FOR OVER 40 YRS. NOW RETIRED SINCE 2004.
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU (BUYERS).
May Divine Providence guide us in all our undertakings. SO MOTE IT BE!
Good video !
Thank you :)
excellent video
Thank you :)
Cool thanks 👍appreciate this information
:)
obo also means: on buy out
It would be used in different context
A lot of dealers, post on Craigslist as private sellers
true!
What is private party
anything without tax/through a dealer.
Anyone else here for their first car? Lol
:)
I'm here for my second car because I just totalled my 2001 Dodge Dakota. Literally this morning. Probably getting my license taken away for the moment but eventually it will be time to buy a new one
My brother got a 2001 Malibu with 79k miles and NO issues for $1800, lucky bastard
Hmm, not the most reliable car but that's pretty low mileage!
Auto Autopsy Lol ikr and the car I’m getting (I think) is my grandmas 140k mile Kia Forte with a bunch of hail dents and dirty interior but damn that thing has little thing has a hella good stereo!
Well, it's a 17 year old car...
That body style was VERY undesirable. Rental car queen. Thats why gm put the current malibu on the impala chasis
was a video really neccesary in 2017 to instruct others to use CL lol ?
Yes, unfortunately... :/
i feels man, no worries
U put 18,000 instead of 180,000
My mistake
Buy trucks from a large urban city like Chicago, rather than Rural farm areas, where they are much more a premium.
I live in Texas 😭
Ummm. Dunno if its just me but my truck is from texas and its lasted up to 419,000 miles and she still runs strong
Where should I look for Subaru Foresters?
1-3 pictures, one sentence no thank you. Obviously he/she doesn't want to sell the car bad enough.
Clearly not a motivated seller!
The Silverado is a scammmmmm! Stay away from ads that have only 1 picture most likely a scam. Also if you contact someone through phone/text and they ask to send an email it's a scammmmm!
It is a scam, thanks for reaffirming that
Exactly 💯
I'd be really careful about vague ads for vehicles with really undervalued asking prices. It might be a vulture trying to get you to meet up and jack your cash.
Good tip
Anyone who brings $5k to a meet up before even seeing the car deserves to be robbed. Also, do the exchange indoors.
Daito exactly !! Lol
Thats why you bring people. I wish someone would try stealing my money. I’ll really show em to not do that
There are other ways to make the transactions besides cash. You can see the car and then go to the bank with the seller and get a cashier's check and do the paperwork inside the bank. I don't think a legit seller would mind going to the bank if he is going to get $$.
I also pay attention to the background in the photos. In this video i could tell right away the ads were in the PHx area. That silverado picture def was not AZ or Phx environment. Just something i look at when browsing
Great tip! I do the same
That 02 Silverado is probably a scam. Very little info, great( almost unbelievable) price and no phone #. You don't want to email someone from Craigslist. My wife did once and her email was stolen and viruses were sent to all her contacts. Of course never meet someone in an isolated place, especially at night. Never buy a car at night, they look much better even with great lighting.
Yep, yep, all great tips
Sinister.Shelby The truck is for sure fake, I'm not sure why he didn't realize it.
Sinister.Shelby also dont take candy from strangers and look both ways when crossing the street even on a one way street.
I flag posts with one photo, little detail and to cheap or to good to be true price...
I bought my first car at night, test drove it around his neighborhood even pushed it to about 40mph and it was all good even though dude and the deal seemed kinda sketch I still bought it, drove it home got up to about 50-60 and it started knocking. Dude changed his number and everything quick, that was my first lesson. And it was an internet deal where I met him.
I wish sellers would list the VIN number more often
would be helpful!
There’s a reason they don’t 😂
@@markk8248 fax
I think you have to input VIN on cars dot com or more legit sites like cars for sale. Plus you won't get assaulted by crookslist like two- buy genius boy . Idiot learned book value but there's no knowledge of repair/risk $.
Asking because I don't know, does giving the VIN to a potential buyer pose a risk to the seller? Is it a reasonable request for me to ask for the VIN while I'm web shopping? Asking for myself I'm the shopper.
All 1 picture ads are scams btw
A lot are, but I wouldn't say all are
The sliverado is a fake ad, either a stolen car, junk, dealer posing as a private, bait and switch or worse it's a scam and they will rob you when you get to see the car.
Any small damage could make a car a "salvage" title. In my opinion, you could find killer deals on these cars if you know how to inspect them. However, Insurance could be a hassle.
Great point; sometimes it's a risk
Auto Autopsy Also, with those high miles on the Ford, I can imagine those are highway miles. But like you said, it's a risk you take.
small damage? salvage happens when damage is at least 75% of the cars value
z lariviere20 correct, like two damaged headlights and a damaged bumper on a new car. Fix it yourself. The labor on stuff like that is very expensive.
labor for headlights and a bumper is expensive? the cost of the unit is more than the cost of the labor and even on an expensive car the headlight units are only about 300 bucks a piece and the bumper is about 350 (give or take a few hundred) and labor for headlights is about 30 minutes for both and a bumper about an hour at the most the cost of replacing what you've said a new high end car would be about 3 grand including labor which is no where near 75% of a new cars value only if the car was 10 or more years old and had like 150k miles or more on it would that be around 75%. i'm sure you can find a good deal once in a while where you can make some profit or maybe keep the car for yourself if you want to deal with finding an insurance company that'll insure it but as far as i can tell the majority of the time it really isn't worth the effort. i've never personally met someone that deals with cars like that that has ever considered that as a viable option given the potential risks.
Avoid all German cars...unless you like money pits.
that's a broad generalization
I can tell you right now I have seen add like the silverado often and it ends up being a scam. They say they are from out of state and to send them money and they will ship the car.
Yeah, at that point it would be fairly evident
Best tip I can give is to buy "circumstances" not cars. Find people who have a life event in which they want to sell car quickly (family member death, moving, going off grid, etc). Then give your low ball offer with straight face.
Lol yeah that's one way to do it
But people make up stories anyways to try to sell the car . Trust me it happens ! “My kids moving away for college” knowing damm well there a huge oil leak on ur engine u just tryna get rid of it ! I would say buy cars from older people then lil high school n college kids . Specially older ppl like 60s n 70s
Actually from what I’ve seen, scammers often use elaborate life stories to pull in buyers. A popular one is a car that seems too good to be true for the price and the seller will say “this was my family member’s car and I’m trying to sell quickly because it reminds me of them...” they try to blindside you with the sob story.
One thing that I’ve learned about buying on Craigslist is that there are a lot of scam ads, just like the Silverado. One there is a bland photo of a Silverado, two the description is vague, three the miles don’t match up to the price because my Silverado has 287,122 miles and it has multiple issues with it and it was worth about $1500 USD, and four people will always leave a phone number with an e-mail. Anyone who wants to sell their vehicle will put their phone number in because the person who is selling it will want to be able to be contacted quickly. I agree with Auto Autopsy, Craigslist is the best place to buy a used car for cheap but it can be the worst because you could get a pile of crap. I don’t agree that the Silverado is a good buy because it’s a scam. Buyer beware when on Craigslist!
Yep, thank you for sharing!
Vincent La Grua no Chevy with 287,000 on it is worth $1500. I'm sorry but that's just false
MartinWhitley you don't even know the condition of my truck so you sir are the one who is false. I have an engine that is burning oil, an interior that is beat up inside and the exterior has accident damage. If you go on either KBB or Edmunds it will tell you that the truck is worth approximately $1500 - $2500, I live in Arizona and that's the base price of my vehicle in the condition it's in and it may be different for your area. But don't tell me how much my truck isn't worth when I have done my research already.
I disagree that people who want to sell their vehicle will put their phone number in the ad. I used to think that way, but times have changed. I have posted several ads on Craigslist and put my phone number in their “safe” contact info box only to be flooded with scam text replies. I have found older people like me are now refusing to put in their phone number. Wait for an email reply and return an email reply with a phone number to contact. I have started refusing to reply to phone numbers without local area codes. I know this cuts down on possible buyers, but scammers just waste my time.
some advertisers don't leave contact info because they prefer email and don't want to give away personal contact info like the phone number. I certainly wouldn't want my number on a public listing. there's a "reply" button for every craigslist post where you can email the seller. and obviously use a secondary email account just for stuff like this in the event you're emailing some scumbag who uses these listings to get email addresses and then sells them.
oh and definitely interested in more like this man! thanks :D
Thanks! There wasn't even an email for that Silverado, if that's what you're referring to...at least, I think...
Auto Autopsy it’s at the top of the listing page
Why not use a text now number or something related to that if you don't want to give your number or online. (Which is understandable btw)
This Silverado is definitely a scam.
Yep, for sure!
@@AutoAutopsy bruh almost everything in craigslist is a scam i cant wipe my eyes seeing a mf corvette z01 for 20k
With regard to the Chevy truck 9 our of 10 a scam of some kind. Way underpriced and how many places in phoenix have big trees and grass like in the pic?
Yep, exactly
I currently have three vehicles that I bought through Craigslist, and I also used KBB as a tool. KBB's price given was within reason for the '11 9-3, very low for the '99 Viggen, but was way off for the Tacoma. It is a low-mileage extended cab, 4WD pickup with all options. KBB suggested value is actually half of what I could get for it in a few days. If I ever have an accident, I would have to retain an attorney to battle the insurance company. If I have an accident in the Saabs, I would also have to enlist a lawyer, because of the low perceived value, and my insurance would initially total the car. Since the '11 is a 6-speed, it would be almost impossible to replace.
Yep; i've seen so many saabs totaled with no damage because of perceived ridiculous overestimated repair costs...it's sad!
High mileage is not always a bad thing. If it's really high mileage for the year, like twice as much as normal (12k/yr) then it was likely highway mileage and it's probably in better condition than a city car driven half that many miles. Find out why the title was salvaged and what your state's laws are regarding cleaning the title after any repairs have been made.
Very good advice
I think a video/series on practical, fun, first cars would be a good thing to do, I'm sure a lot of people would watch that
also I'd like to know what your thoughts are for getting an mk6/7 GTI manual as a first, my ulterior motive 😂
and dude, more miata videos PLEASE
Of course, GTI's are great buys for first cars! And I'll hopefully be working on that soon!
great to hear man I'm leaning towards an mk7 cause my dad thinks it will be better overall in the long-run with regards to both reliability as well as overall convenience and safety, and I definitely agree. the styling also looks much better but I need to look around more as I'm trying to get one for as less as possible. do any of your friends/relatives have GTIs?
my v6 camry is 18 years old with 230k miles and runs perfectly fine no issues still fast also, no ac😨
:0
I have better luck on offer up than Craigslist
same
Do more videos like this,please.
Will do!
Very informative video Auto Autopsy! Thank you. Keep them coming.
For newbies or clueless
:48 "Dealers charge more because they've had the car professionally looked at, make sure it's a good solid car for you"... Hahahaha! I can tell you're young, so it's okay. But nah man, dealers don't always do that. especially the smaller used car dealers that you'll see with a lot of craigslist posts.
They do make the buying experience a little easier though, providing a temp tag etc. Of course, that's not worth the often $1000+ premium to me, but to each their own.
Yeah, I don't like used car dealers either...not recommending them in anyway
I almost instantly thumbed down the video because of that ridiculous line. They charge more because they're greedy and dishonest.
Offer up is also good
Bought my Miata off that!
Offer up is the best
A lot of scams on that site as well
Shaniya Smith you’re good🤪
I was on Offer up looking at a good trucks. I saw one that stood out. The only thing is, the guy is selling it for 14k. In his description, he said he put 17k into building the truck. So I offered 12k. He said yes and that’s the lowest he’ll go. A couple days later we meet up so I can check out the truck. The guy was nice, started up the truck and he let me drive it around. There didn’t seem to be any issues with it and I asked if I could see the recipts, he brought out a binder full of pages showing how much money he spent on the parts. So I told him, we’ll come back and discuss about buying the truck. He was fine with that and we talked about when we would meet up again. My brother was helping me do research on the truck because he knows more. So he thinks, why is the guy willing to sell the truck for such a low price. I mean, the truck is really nice. So we asked, if we can see a pic of the smog certificate and transmission receipts. After we asked the guy, he started to get mad and he said he knows how much money he put into it and he said he showed us the receipts when we first met. We were nice and we said, all we need to see are the receipts. Then the guy said, i have serious buyers wanting to buy the truck on the day I was going to meet with him again. So my brother and I were thinking, if he has another buyer, why hasn’t he sold the truck yet. The reason we think this is sketchy is because the truck was up on offer up for about a month. So we went back to the topic of why is the price so low. All of a sudden, the guy moves the price of the truck back up. When we asked why he wants to get rid of it, he said because he doesn’t have enough time to work on it. He also told us on the day we met, he had 3 other trucks. I mean, this guy is obviously lying and is trying to scam us or something. So honestly, buy a car from a legit place like the dealership. When you buy a car from a random person, you might lose the car the next day because the person will most likely come back in the night and take it back because they might have spare keys. If you can’t afford a car from the dealership, ride with a friend. Lucky for me, My brother is really good at seeing if we are going to be scammed or not.
glad you did some thorough questioning there!! however, i wouldn't say that means a dealership is the only route!
I do that to, use KBB DEALERSHIP USE THEM TOO! With internet it's not so easy to get hosed by the dealership. I remember the days when kbb had a blue little book dealership look at. Ppl could buy them, but no one really ever did. When I sold cars dealership always pretty much hit trades $1k behind book. Good information for non-car ppl 👍🏼
Yep, exactly!
Craigslist is the worst place to buy cars. private sellers who think their trash is worth more than the cars actual value.
Lol, no....
So what do you recommend?
Exactly! ...Craigslist is shit!!! Most of these sites like CL, Letgo, Offerup... Are all the same. You can find a deal on there but it's not that easy. Most people are selling their problems onto someone else. It's a HUGE gamble when buying a car this way. Never assume what the seller tells you is the truth. Most are so desperate to get rid of the car cuz they need the money, that they will tell you literally anything.
So what do you recommend then
@@skillfully_great1098 ...again what do you recommend? So far your statements are not helpful. In fact, as the newspapers around the country are dwindling and rarely post automobiles for sale the ONLY place to find used cars are Craigslist, Offerup, or Nextdoor Neighbor.
More videos like these please, thank you.
Sure :) I finished out the series if you're interested
The silverado is a total scam ad that was generated by a computer. Most likely they stole the picture from another ad. Look carefully at the ad heading. It makes no sense.
Yeah, I said it was a scam lol. Thanks for the advice!
Ah, I must have missed the part where you said it was a scam.
I just bought my car from copart decent prices. Most of them are salvage but if you know how to fix a car that's where to go. I dont worry about insurance since I have friends that work with different insurance companies.
Nice! Copart is great
2011 Ford Focus 2800$ that is not a steal online you see them 800$ to 1000$ runs and drive
yikes, too cheap
Suggests finding cheap cars on craigslist...... Finds a "bargain" in the FIRST TEN photos after putting a price range in...... then needs kelley blue book to ACTUALLY CHECK it's a bargain..... absolutely hopeless.
Kelley blue book was there to show that it was a good deal. Are you dense?
Craigslist isn't the great used car hunting grounds that it once was. In my local area, around Lubbock in West Texas, nearly every private party CL used car ad is actually from a small time dealer who may or may not even be licensed. No matter how much I was convinced that I was looking at a true private party ad, it always ended up being a small time car flipper. Do not fall into the trap of assigning a better condition to a used car just because it is older. With shot paint that RAV 4 is in poor condition. There are older cars that have been garaged and regularly washed that still look great. There are many tipoffs to scam ads, like their insistence on email - but one of the most obvious and glaring tipoffs is when they list a great looking car that they are selling (scamming) for less money then they would get by simply selling it to a dealer (dealers buy cars off private parties all the time). If a person was really willing to sell a car far below what any reputable dealer would pay - why would they go through all the hassle of selling it on their own?
Yep, sometimes you'll find quite a few dealers on there
There isn't shit on Craigslist that's worth a damn for under $5000 any more
you sound mad.
@@AutoAutopsy no he sounds legit. It's true. The game has changed. Craigslist is dry af
I can add a little advice. First and foremost, be patient. Secondly, limit your search to what is available close by. Within 10 miles would be my limit. It sucks to travel far just to be disappointed. Also, never agree to meet someone in a mall parking lot. The seller doesn't want you to know where he lives for a reason.
I agree with your first point!
No strangers allowed at my house. You could be looking to steal something.
You will probably gather even more information once you are old enough to get your license
You have to be careful because a lot of those ads that are priced suspiciously cheap are in fact fake ads, it’s especially a dead give away if the only contact info is an email address or a number with a zip code not from that area. Those are red flags it’s a scam.
Also I live in Florida so another way I’m able to to tell is if the background of the picture looks like Florida, if the background doesn’t have vegetation that we have here that’s a dead giveaway, for example if the background has hills and pine trees in it and it says it’s from Florida it’s a scam.
correct! good tips
i saw a 2004 honda civic for $1. guys is tha t actaully real or fake pls tell me.. Why would it be so cheap and it woudl be a really good deal too!!! is it worth it? guys is this real and not fake be hoenst?
i would venture to guess the description of the ad has an actual asking price
It might be an auction
Do you have to pay a fee to get Kelley blue book?
Nope!
Brother, best how to buy a car tutorial I could ever find on UA-cam. Thank you much.
Glad to help!
whatever you say it makes NO SENCE, sorry but there is a huge lack of experience of how to buy or inspect the car. A lot of your points is useless
sense* Might want to proofread your own comment before taking a shot at someone's credibility.
History of accidents and number of owners affects the value as well. I would never buy a car that's had 4-6 owners. Odds are some of them didn't maintain the vehicle and beat the crap out of it, knowing they weren't keeping it long. Ever heard of a "branded" title? I almost bought an 03 Toyota Camry with around 170,000 miles. It drove fine and no leaks that had a branded title according to my friend who works at a dealership that ran a Carfax for me.
Great points! Thank you for commenting Tom
What kind of brand? Essentially a branded title could be a number of things.
18000 missing a zero
If you guys like cars and these kinds of videos, id recommend motormotto.com as a place to learn more about cars and become part of a car community. Hope this helped!
good tip
Craigslist is Shit on my phone, I ounly can search for cars in Heidelberg, I search for cars in Europe, not ounly in Germany 😠
:/
Great vid. How would I go about having a mechanic check it? Can I ask the owner to take it to a mechanic, for checking the vehicle, and give him some $ for the trouble, or offer a free oil change on it? I don't want to gamble 7k or 8k.
I would take it to a mechanic yourself. I wouldn't rely on the owner to do a trustworthy job on that. Look up some PPI services in your area and get in contact with one of them!
@@AutoAutopsy but I can do this before I buy?
Good video my friend, good you are informing others to do good choices when buying from craigslist. When looking for cars you should go with a mechanic friend 👍
Good idea, can't hurt!
I hate it when people go into great detail in the description but in the specs it doesn't even say the outside color. I also hate when they post like 30 outside photos and then 1 pic of each row of seats and that's it.
lol why is it a huge deal regarding the color? But yeah, definitely need to make sure to include interior photos too!
Yeah, the color was a bit of a far stretch
1999 jeep grand Cherokee
1,700 looks very nice
Great video, and great advice too!.You are absolutely right,Craigslist is the best source.Ive tried it,and there are many great deals there. There are a few good dealers around, but i don't trust the majority of them, because they're masters at scamming people, and overinflating prices.
Thanks :)
I would stay away from offer up there are way too many scams on there you can tell that the cars they list are fake
I would say that about craigslist before offer up; i have had good experiences with offer up
YOU ARE THE BEST!!! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped! :))
Yes, please post more videos about buying and negotiating a used car.
I have a few others on my channel about it
Well done.
thanks Mike!
hey i found a good deal on Facebook marketplace but i am not to sure what rebuilt title is. is it still worth looking at?
It means it was most likely in an accident of some sorts/stolen. A carfax could clarify that for you. Depending on that, it could be worthwhile still!
Stay away from rebuilt imo
I'm actually going to a used car dealership for a 2010 Mazda3 i trim with 150k miles at $5000. It's almost excellent condition and they offered an extended warranty and guarantee if any issues occur since they have a network of mechanics that verify it they'll take care of it or they will give me my money back for the car. I never go to car dealers but due to business needs and having to rely on my bank's willingness to extend a loan out, I'm going this route. Kinda a tough spot but doable.
hope it works out!
never buy a car with over 100,000 miles ever! its used up junk!
False

SPACE SHUTTLE DOOR GUNNER how’s the safety
SPACE SHUTTLE DOOR GUNNER lmaoo ya I was talking about if I get hit by a drunk driver on the freeway hopefully the car I’m in could be safe like a Mazda cx or something..
this is the first video of yours that ive seen , but my first impression is that you are giving craigslist shopping advice to we craigslist pro shoppers . We ALL know that if we check the phone number for the Silverado ad ( which you didnt even do ) , we would easily see it is a out-of-state-number. I dare you to call or email the number , you would get the biggest line of bs email that youve ever seen
And I'd laugh my ass off! Lol
Hi. Just wanted to know if the tips provided by the video are still helpful or if they should get updated.
Kbb uses "Fair Market" while Edmunds uses True Market Value (TMV).
I only have about 3,500 spend and I cannot find anything that I like because I keep going on car complaints.com if there's an issue I won't buy it and being very picky
lol, well you're not going to find anything perfect....
That 2002 Silverado was a fake add
Paying 2k for a car? how long til something goes wrong?
we've bought a handful of cars for less than 2k with no issues; you have to find the right deals.
At time stamp 3:50 you are talking about Kelly Blue Book Value NOT ‘True Market Value’ (TMV) which is from Edmunds.com. I prefer Edmunds to KBB.com because they researched the actual price that the car sold for-not the asking price, but the actual price recorded by the DMV when the title is transferred. This is exactly as you described. However, in the past Kelly Blue Book’s research lists the average asking price from the ads posted nationally-not the final dickered down agreed upon price between buyer and seller. That is why Edmunds states they are listing the TRUE market value, not the asking price market value. Maybe that has changed at Kelly Blue Book because I haven’t used them in years, but in my experience KBB.com estimated price is always $500 to $1000 higher than Edmunds. Secondly, there are many dealers listing cars as private party. When you phone them and ask if they are the owner or a dealer, they will say “No, I’m not a dealer.” Technically they are telling you the truth. They are a mechanic or body shop or an individual who repairs cars and resells them. But their name is NOT on the title. A true private party person will meet you at his home and he will have owned the car for some time and can talk at length about it. You can spot “dealers” (car flippers??) because their ads often are in all capital letters or the car’s options are in a vertical list. They never put down the mileage. They either post a ton of photos or just one photo. A true private party person writes a few sentences with punctuation like they learned in high school English class ( your first example is one of these), and they list the mileage. They may not state details about the engine because they aren’t a knowledgeable car person. They just drove it and took it to their mechanic when needed work done. After speaking with them over the phone for a few minutes you can usually tell if they are the true owner of the vehicle.
yes, great advice and information; thanks for the correction!
Timing belt or timing chain? Did it have a timing belt break before? When was this vehicles timing belt get replaced? 100000 miles ago? It's probably instant junk & The belt will break as soon as you buy it!!!! Let the buyer beware.
fair point
So I have a 98 Chevy lumina with 160,000 Miles. There is some paint scratched in the back but no bumper damage and the front passenger door was hit in a parking lot still opens and closes. As an older car with regular predictable issues, what do you think I could sell this for?
I would see what KBB and other sites list the value at. As well as see what others are going for
I agree with the fact that the truck was indeed a scam. 1 picture, no license plate and the super low price. I live in California, vehicles here have to have both front and rear plates. Also I have lived n other parts of the country so I am familiar with what the background of the pictures should look like. For example if the landscape is very lush and green and there is a Blue Spruce tree or two in the background, a tree that does not grow here, and the ad says it's local, it's a scam. Not ever lived in Phoenix I don't think of the it having the lush green background that this picture shows, You know the old saying "If it looks to good to true, it probably isn't"
yep :(
My first time on Craigslist and you are very Informative and helpful. Please make more videos? we all need some smart know how & what to look out for videos!! Thank You & God bless you & yours!!
thank you
You didn't address scams at all, which are surprisingly common on sites like craigslist. I would guess that the Chevy was definitely a scam. One picture, price is really low, hardly any info on it, all these things are telltale signs that someone is trying to scam you.
Obviously, yes. Lol
3/12/18 & just found this YT video....lots of good info.....you obviously want to help people like me---with less experience---find/buy a good used vehicle. Thanks & I've subscribed....
Thanks for your subscription and comment :)
He only put 18,000 miles
I can't find any used cars under $6,000 with less than around 100,000 miles. I'm nervous cuz my college is 2 hours away and I'm not sure if the car will last through all that
depends entirely on the car; the used car market is pretty hot right now too. if you just need something reliable to get you to school i'd recommend a toyota
Thanks for the video.
You could click on reply at the top left corner at the add and by that you will see the phone number or even email.
What about costumed car? How could we know the best value? Because i saw a Saab for sale with top care and with a lot of mods, but how would i know the value to be fair with negotiate?
Also, could you do visual inspection on Saab car? So, we could learn how to buy one?
Thanks
For sure I will! Modified cars are tricky. Sometimes they can be worth a lot more, but usually basic modifications add little/no value to the car
Yeah, but I've learned from repeated and unfortunate experience that you simply cannot believe anything someone says in their Craigslist ad, they are always either lying or ignorant.
I swear, half the time people don't even know the correct year of their car.
Hell, a lot of people don't even know how to spell Infiniti or Camry the right way.
LOL, that's sadly accurate
When we had our frontier for sale, we were asking like 8500. A guy sent me back a screen shot showing it was only worth 6 grand. My ad included quite a few pictures and info on the vehicle. I sent him back a screenshot showing it worth 8495.
Depends on the site, and the type of sale (private party, dealer, etc)
The Toyota RAV4 is located near me lol. I was just looking at he map next to it and was like “hm that area looks familiar” and went to Google maps and was like “OH that’s down the road from me”
Lol!
Sucks I live in mass which there isn’t a crazy big car culture so I can’t find anything that I’m interested in. Might have to go down to NY and pick one one with my dad
:)
Woah you live in phx? I live here as well, I’m trying to buy a used car but don’t wanna get ripped off and I don’t really have anyone to help me, I have $2900 rn
I would suggest saving up more. Last thing you want to do is spend all of that on the car itself and then have to pay for registration, insurance, and possible fixes
Craigslist for cars is almost dead now that you have to pay $5 to post an ad. Thanks to all the dealers and flippers. Now everybody’s doing it the old fashioned way with a sign in the window.
They did change their policy recently yes (this video was published wins before that). CL will probably see a decline in car sellers, but it will still be used
