    I honestly believe Storm and Skye were invented so Diageo could have a value triple pack of 20cl bottles with the 10yo. Like the comparison here, I’ve wondered for years if there was any difference between these.

    Hey Geoff, another solid review! Tried the Storm back in March as part of an entry level Island scotch tasting I was having with some friends. The other bottles included Tobermory 12, Highland Park 12, Arran 10, and Scapa Orcadian. I ranked the Storm just above the Scapa which was my least favourite scotch of the night. It wasn't bad, just disappointing since I really enjoy Talisker 10 and was hoping it would be comparable considering it costs $101 here whereas the 10 is $84. Like you said, the Talisker 10 just does everything better than the Storm, and here it does it for considerably less.

    • @Gwhisky

      Hah that sounds about right. Scapa and Storm can't quite cut it against stiff like Tobermory and Arran. Sounds like a fun tasting! Cheers Peter! 🥃

      There are a lot of single malts which are superfluous. They may even get good reviews. But I'm mostly thinking of 40%ers with e150 and chill filtration. Good blend filler makes good blends. They should promote better blended malts instead of BS single malts and maybe I'll buy one. Hahaha-doubt it.
      Storm and Skye are just silly. The 10 is still not overly priced and represents the nature of the distillery character. Some have called it the quintessential peated scotch. What more does Diageo want?
      I have and unopened older storm and I regifted Dark Storm a few months ago, but I'll be at Heathrow tomorrow so we'll see.
      Thanks to Whiskytube, I will actually have an idea of what I'm look at

    In my US market, there is approx $25 difference beween the 10 and the Storm. Talisker 10 is typically around $68-70, and Storm is usually around $45. So maybe with a differential like that it makes sense.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому +2

      That makes much more sense. Meanwhile I have comments from people in other markets saying where they live the Storm is much pricier than the 10. Insane!

      @@Gwhisky Good review. I haven't tried Storm yet, such a fan of the 10 I'd rather pay the extra dough. I didn't think much of the NAS Game of Thrones Talisker, the typically elegant campfire smoke was sort of ashy, off-putting.

      When I first purchased this almost 6 years ago, it was $30. That's in Atlanta, GA. The 10 was twice as expensive. Now the Storm costs more than $30 but it is between $20 and $30 cheaper than the 10

  • @allenbt11
    @allenbt11 2 роки тому +4

    Geoff, I think you are just in a good market, for the 10. In my market there's a $20.00 delta in the price and more importantly the 10 has been an increasingly difficult find. I wouldn't be surprised to see the street price on the 10 climb to $35 over the Storm before too long.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому +1

      I'm in an excellent market to enjoy single malts, and I'm very lucky. But if you check the comments it seems like the prices are all over the map between the 10 and Storm. Some markets have them roughly the same, most have the 10 only slightly more expensive, but some markets like yours have a pretty big gap between the two. I've even heard from people in the comments that the Storm is a good chunk more expensive than the 10 in some places. Whisky pricing is total madness. But yes, I'm lucky. Cheers!

    I had the "older labeled" Storm little over a year ago, and I didn't like it. I actually liked Skye more.
    Storm for me tasted "hollow". Some salt, some smoke, some sweetness, but nothing in between. 10yo is much better.
    However I want to try Dark Storm when I find it, to see how it compares to the others in the core range.

    • @Gwhisky

    In the UK at least, the Talisker Storm and Skye are both heavily discounted almost all the time - one or the other is usually around £28 rather than the £48 supposed RRP. Their purpose is to provide diageo with a NAS (no age statement) option that they can discount.

    Most excellent discussion of new vs old Formulations of Tali . Sadly, in Ontario CA prices are mad, 100$CAD for Storm / 120$ for Tali-10 / 125$ for Distillers Ed. / 110$ Port Ruighe (yeah, cheaper than 10 !) . . . Compared to pre-2015, all post-2015 releases are very FLORAL on the nose with short finishes. I am stepping into my fixed income years now, so I would just buy 2 Te Bheag (40$) for every 1 bott of Talisker/10/storm, vatt them all together and split, voila =3 bottles at 60$ for the tumbler, saving my 18 and 21 for the copita . I haven't tried any sort of Talisker since the new labels were introduced, so... When I bought a bottle of Storm it was about £10 less than the 10 (now the difference is only about £5, I think, but Storm is still cheaper here). I have always found the 10 too peppery for me; the Storm (then) was less peppery and more smoky, so I went for that (more like Laphroaig?).

    On a similar note, where I live Ardbeg Ten and 5yo tend to be very close in price, sometimes less than $5; so what's the point? Ardbeg 5 should be 43% and sell for about $35 IMO; then it would be a killer bottle ✌️

    Look, this is a very typical marketing strategy in perfumery. Fashion brands like Versace, Givenchy, Hugo Boss, etc launch flankers all the time. Those flankers are basically the same fragrance with an additional word on its name (like One Million - One Million Elixir) and an additional note in its formula. Basically, they want to sell another product that lives off the fame of the preceding product that it basically mimics with a slight change to make it "worth trying"

    Ok so there’s

    Sherry
    Maritime
    Earthy
    When I first had talisker 10 I was blown away by the salted caramel angle.
    I’ve already grown to love peat smoke.
    What other major categories should I try and which whiskeys are good for each flavour?

      For entry-level pricing I think Bunna 12 would cover both the sherry and the earthy notes nicely. I like Oban 14 as a maritime malt, but it's getting overpriced. • @welshtoro3256
    @welshtoro3256 2 роки тому +3

    Completely agree Geoff. I think we can go back to the original marketing label of the Storm. The old label looked pretty funky to folk in the supermarket who don't really know about whisky and the 10 seemed like a more traditional whisky. With the new boring label they look identical but the 10 is better. Therefore , "what's the point of the Storm" as you say? I think Serge once said that Skye and Storm took the pressure off the 10 because Diageo could flog that NAS stuff without lowering the quality of the 10. The 10 isn't as good as it was 20 years ago but it's still very good. Skye and Storm came out when traditional companies were doing their best to rip us off by selling NAS which was the same price as better aged stuff. None of those whiskies were as good as their age statement namesakes - Think Glenlivet as a painful example.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому +2

      Very possibly true WT! I have no idea what the thought process of the marketing team was at the time, but you're right that's right around the time brands were going crazy for NAS releases. Can't agree more with the reviewer. Only purpose is blending it into cocktails/hot Choc/toddies to make them more interesting. Bought it because I love the 10. I will stick with the 10 for sipping from now on (next winter).

    I agree that the Storm is a good scotch. The Dark Storm is better. In fact, I think the Dark Storm is better than the 10. In my market the 10 is way overpriced for what you get ($83). For me, the 10 should be around $50. It’s a good scotch, not a great scotch. I could get an Ardbeg Uigeadail for $9 more than the cost of the Talisker 10 here. There is absolutely no comparison between those two scotches. The Dark Storm is more difficult to find but I can get it online in a 1 liter bottle for $65. That’s a great deal.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому +2

      Depends on markets, it seems. Ardbeg Uigeadail is better, but it's also well over double the price of the Talisker 10 here. I've had the Dark Storm once a long time ago. I should revisit it soon. Cheers Alan.

    • @Gwhisky

      Very few. By myself, I may finish one bottle every two or three months. In a group my friends and i probably finish 2 or 3 per month, between many people. Most of my bottles are split, borrowed, or traded. Still, I do have too many open bottles these days. First world problems...

  • @ianholmes6078

    I bought the Storm, but have not tried it yet. In fact, I have not tried any Talisker, as I find the pricing to be way too high for what is being offered. I bought the storm because it was 35% off, which still makes it too expensive, but moves into my 'I will try it once' category. Even if it is a good whisky, I refuse to pay beyond what I think is fair value. I am wary that I may just have to sideline scotch all together if prices keep going up. Vote with your wallets people!

    I got the older Storm for about $20 less than the 10. Still not worth it. I get a strong soapy note that I don’t care for. IMO this was basically a released when distilleries were running out of aged stocks. Just like the Bunnahabhain Stuiduar.
