Have had a major crush on Sam Ramey since I saw him as Escamillio in Carmen at the Chicago Lyric Opera. He’s got it all - the dance training, fantastic voice and charisma galore.
Only the best and most famous basses get to sing this. But actually it is pretty easy. I often used it as a warm up aria. My whole life I tried to sing the Handel arias that Ramey just whips through like they were nothing. I never could handle the fioratura. This one anyone with a big dark voice can sing. The hard part of the role is the entrance scene. I heard Ramey do this part at San Francisco opera. Memorable.
Perhaps Mr. Pinza lacked your big dark voice. He famously considered this aria and this role to be the hardest he'd sung, and warned other basses "don't sing that role, it will destroy your voice!"
I saw this performance at the MET!! Mesmerizing! An amazing bass baritone (I emphasize bass) what a technician! I saw him in “Sammy-Ramey-Day” (he sang head and shoulders above Anderson’s Semiramis) I also named my cat the same satirical name!!
@Gabriela Gomes Haha I just meant his singing is brilliant, as in "very good" -- but his interpretation is also excellent so there's some intellect there either way!
So I'm not the only one. I've always wondered if he threw it on the floor...thus risking stepping on it with his bare feet. It's obvious, however, that before he takes the needle out and pops the balloon with it, that the needle was stuck into the cummerbund he's wearing.
I'd imagine it's pinned into his costume - the belt...and goes straight back there as the chorus takes over. No way he'd throw it away (union rules would go nuts!)
+immeralles besserwisser I don't think he got that late a start. Besides, basses don't really hit their stride until a bit later than the lighter male voices do. I do think that James Morris (who had a good voice, but not as good as Ramey's or as versatile) pretty much had an in with the Met, as he was the bass favored by principal conductor, James Levine. Morris, however, never had a voice that was as flexible and agile as Ramey's, and therefore could not have sung the Rossini coloratura bass roles or some of the baroque operas for which Ramey was justly famous. At any rate, Ramey was one of the very best basses of the latter 20th Century. His beautiful vocal tone, coupled with great versatility and flexibility and agility made Ramey one of the greatest operatic voices ever.
Bass, not bass-baritone. He just doesn't have one of those "in between" voices that mark the bass-baritone. He has the full bass range, including the notes at the bottom of the lower register. He's a basso cantante with a very extended upper register.
@Connor 7D don't forget about his unknowing sidekick The Woodsman/Judge Doom/Uncle Fester/Doc Brown/Leporello, who did the Edelwood Forest chopping on behalf of the condition that his daughter will be returned back safe and sound.

Happy birthday to a sinfully talented artist!
I first saw this on PBS 25-odd years ago. Loved it then, love it now. Ramey at his best --

One of the best bass baritone ever. He was in such good shapethe dressers at the Met bared his chest in costume. Bravo!

Absolutely genius!❤👏
I've watched this entire opera over three times and I have yet to figure out where the needle goes when he's done with it
So I'm not the only one. I've always wondered if he threw it on the floor...thus risking stepping on it with his bare feet. It's obvious, however, that before he takes the needle out and pops the balloon with it, that the needle was stuck into the cummerbund he's wearing.

WAIT WHAT. FEELS ILLEGAL WHAT. WHY IS HE HOT. THAT IS NOT
No! He is not a baritone but a true low bass-baritone, with a lot of chest in the low. Good powerful top too.
Bass, not bass-baritone. He just doesn't have one of those "in between" voices that mark the bass-baritone. He has the full bass range, including the notes at the bottom of the lower register. He's a basso cantante with a very extended upper register.

I had to skip to the end to see if he popped that balloon. He does.
spoiler alert!!! Why skipping? Didn't you like the singing?
@@The_Barefoot_Bass he probably did, but he was mostly curious how Singor Ramey popped the balloon.
