I have no idea how people can dislike this...Samuel Ramey sings this piece better than anyone else ever has. If someone disagrees, I would love to hear their full reasoning as to why.
@@emailvonsour Are you serious? His singing sounds exactly like his speaking voice. Check some of his interviews ( ua-cam.com/video/UE9_sadFlvs/v-deo.html ). And the lowest G, I know its two different recordings, but it sounds to me far wider than Ghiaurov's. Not that I'm denying Ghiaurov's magnificence.
@@mhikl4484 Robert Merrill was a baritone, and never sang the role of Mefistofele, which was written for the bass voice. Samuel Ramey is a true bass, not a bass-baritone, as some people think. His voice encompasses the full range of the base voice. It's not one of those in-between voices that are bass-baritones. Bryn Terfel is a bass-baritone, and I think he just doesn't have the weight in his lower register to sing this role. Perhaps you're used to listening to the heavier basses, and have never heard a basso cantante before, which is what Ramey is.
@@MultiKamil97 Terfel is a bass-baritone, not a bass. Ramey is a bass, even though he has a spectacular upper register that keeps going up and up and up. I think Terfel's voice lacks the weight in its lower register to sing this role.
I love it best when he sings "Ri-hi-hi-hi-do e avvento questa sillaba." That's more than hitting with rhythm. That's hitting with character and rhythm. So powerful and vulgar at the same time.
Bravo Samuel e grazie. 💙🧡❤️💝🎵🎶
Samuel Ramey unsurpassed and in Boito's Mefistofele absolutely wonderful. San Francisco superb production also includes the wonderful Denis O'Neill and Benackova. Marie Henderson-Cleland
I saw mefistofele few days ago, in Bucharest. the man who played mefistofele has a bass voice but i think he wasn't that great in this play. The show wasn't as i expected becasue of this. Samuel Ramey is absolutely amazing!! a huge difference...
This is such a beautiful contrast to the previous aria, the melodious "Dai campi, dai prati" where the old Faust contemplates and admires the beauty of nature; whereas here is Mefistofele wanting to sully and destroy all of God's creation. His whistling is delightfully evil, an obscene noise that mocks the beauty of music itself. I have the whole opera on DVD and I highly recommend buying it. Samuel Ramsey is every inch the devil incarnate, superb voice and tremendous acting.
Recomendable!
New York City Opera revived Boito "Mefistofele" for Norman Treigle. With his voice and the costume he is ablsolutely EVIL! Many today have never heard Treigle, but I knew him in New Orleans and he was truly a basso profundo.

This must be a recording impossible to beat! Ramey is fantastic!!

It's simply superb: it seems that the aria and the role were written to be done exclusively by Ramey.
He lacks colour and nuance. But then, maybe evil translates best that way.
Certainly no Robert Merrill. Bryan Terfel comes closest in such matters..
@@mhikl4484 But Bryn sounds weak when he goes down in this aria. It kinda ruins his performance.

Samuel Ramey makes every role he sings true to the composer, accessable to the audience, and sheer joy to the musician!
Of all the versions. This is the best. Unbelievable.
The Beast is out there...
Watching Wirt and Greg in the Unknown and commanding Leporello/Woodsman to seduce and bring women like Beatrice/chop Edelwood trees for him.

Everyone! I present to you, the Beast from Over the Garden Wall. No seriously, this is the guy
He's the one who betrayed Greg and turned him and Wirt into Edelwood trees.
Outstanding and fascinating!
The magnifying, treacherous beast! 😍⭐

The true successor of the great Norman Treigle. Bravissimo!

Bravissimo 💞
Outstanding in every way. He owns this.
he is so deliciously evil!
I'd definitely make a deal with him. (Why are operatic demons always so damn hot?)
Maybe they put a spell on themselves to look like this.
I see that you here on this video of Mefistofele too. Again, if you don't like opera, don't go all over the place making childish comments about it.
They are looking like this to trick stupid people.
They might have sold their souls to themselves to look so damn good

Bravo,super!

"Forever" is impossible to know - but it's extremely hard to imagine such perfection from anyone else!
Adamo Didur, Paolo Wulman, Nazzareno De Angelis, Marcel Journet, Guilio Neri are all far far far superior to the awful Ramey
