- Maometto's cavatina "Sorgete, sorgete" and cabaletta "Duce di tanti eroi" from Rossini's rarely performed "Maometto Secondo". AFAIK, Samuel Ramey was the first modern singer to perform this role on stage.
1985, Rossini Opera Festival, conductor Claudio Scimone.
Translation of the aria:
Rise, rise: on this happy day,
my valiant warriors, gather around Mehmed and rejoice.
Leading the army of such heroes,
I will make empires crumble;
with you I will triumph over the whole world.
I am sorry that in my working life as a musician I was not told about Samuel Ramey, ans I was working in the opera. But now I can listen to his recordings with pleasure…thank you!
My opinion is that Mr Ramey is one the greatest basses of the century! A great artist ,an incredible singer with one of the most beautiful voices and technic!👏👏👏👏👏 SPECTACULAR!
In modern times Ramey has no rivals in music like this.
Sadly, he really doesn't. Michele Pertusi can handle the coloratura, but his voice is not the equal of Ramey's. I don't know of any other basses who have Ramey's beauty of vocal tone, flexibility and agility, range, and versatility.
this guy is absolutely amazing! I'm feeling sad for not having known him earlier.
Thanks for posting this! I heard him at the MET in Semiramide (it should have been called “Sammy-Ramey-Day” -which after hearing him, I named my cat)! His technique-flawless, a beautiful large warm timbre and such intonation to his coloratura! Didn’t hurt the eyes either!!
What aheartwarming story! I adored him. Especially in Verdi's Attila. None better.
The best Maometto II ever.
yes, what is the top note on final?

@@LiederBrasilis I don't have his recording of Seneca but I have other recordings of his low D.
Grandissima interpretazione!
Une immense basse que j'ai toujours aimée !
Simply the best
I saw Ramey so many times in so many roles. Always amazing. I am currently reading his biography, and he mentioned this scene in detail, primarily because of the wild staging where he steps on top of the muscle guys!
! Magnífico!.
He is absolutely magnificent. I’ve only recently discovered him. But I will now watch everything he sings. What a voice!!!!!!
Hear his "Begin the Beguine".....Cheers from Acapulco!
L'Unico e il Solo.
Fantastico
The best bass ever
Troppo bravo, da rimanere di stucco!!

Ну здравствуйте. Я tehSmile, зашёл поздороваться.
