‎ Regular salt (sodium chloride or NaCl) is one of the best aquarium medications in the world, but you must be careful to use it correctly since it does not evaporate from water. Cory explains what kinds of infections it treats, the difference between NaCl salt and other salts, and recommended dosage amounts.

The osmoregulatory system of marine life deals with that. The most interesting are estuarine life which can deal with varying salinities. Also, what Cory is referring to is FRESHWATER simple life (protists such as ich) vs. multi-cell/organismal life such as fish.

Hey brother I got 22 blue tilapia in my 55 I'm trying to get some to stop flashing on bottom of tank. I'm going to add level 1 recommended dose of salt, however I also have hornwort in the tank. Should I remove it before adding the salt?
I would hate to as lots of the smaller fish eat whatever the plant traps. And provides shelter. Thank you for any advice you can share with me.

Ok for those of you who have kitchen scales and like precision (assuming aquarium salt tbs that Cory is using weights 17 g or 0.6 oz):
    Level 1 - 1.5 g per liter or 0.2 oz per gallon
    Level 2 - 2.24 g per liter or 0.3 oz per gallon
    Level 3 - 4.49 g per liter or 0.6 oz per gallon
Btw, if you decide to get your salt in the grocery store, avoid anticaking agent. This is a citation from Clinical Guide to Fish Medicine: ''Some salts contain anticaking agents (e.g. sodium ferrocyanide) and these must be avoided as they can be highly toxic to fish (Noga 2010a)."

Cory, could you, please, indicate salt dosage in weight per volume? Otherwise in video you address how important it is to take into consideration salt crystal size, but don't give a solution to the problem. Personally, when dosing salt, I found it very difficult to find reliable information on how to convert tbs per volume to weight per volume and I would imagine that others have struggled with it too. I couldn't simply dose with tablespoons as in Finland I don't have access to fine aquarium salt.

@@purpleworm4725 interesting. Usually rock salt is pure and in bigger crystals. You can try the health food store or where you buy multivitamins. Maybe even the pool section. If you really want you can buy saltwater aquarium salt, it is much more expensive but it will last you forever
It is not really an exact science so if the fish should be fine. It is not a dangerous chemical like the medication so if you go a little over it wont kill stuff right away.

Glad to see you are not dissing out salt as fish treatment. On one hand there is better medicine, salt works often the best. For example if I treated Ich with Esha 2000 and Esha Exit, I could kill some plants. Salt is less likely to do that. In both cases a temperature needs to be raised to 30 °C / 86 F, which is way above what most fish and plants are comfortable with. Cysts don't like it either and also their lifecycle is faster.

It must have been recorded quite a while ago. I’m now in the process of starting my first aquarium and I’ve been thinking how to go about quarantining the fish. Thanks for this video, now I’ll go with the salt in the quarantine tank, as a lot of the substances you use and recommend for quarantine are not available without prescription in Europe.

My fish always dies when I use aquarium salt. Over the years I've tested various brands and amounts. Either it's not enough to treat the fish or it's too much and shortens the fish's lifespan.

Question, how much salt is too much for live plants? I remember using a "Nitrite Absorbing" pad in my filter before and it worked but all my plants started dying so I took it out and had to research more. Once I did that I figured out it was basically just a filter soaked in salt water.

currently dealing with what we think is epistylis (hard to tell if ich) and at least 1ppm nitrite readings. Currently doing at least 50% water change daily and adding Prime and Stability as labeled. We have moved our fish to a hospital tank and added API super ich cure and also added some salt (1 tbsp per 3 gal), reduced the heat (didnt want to let the epistylis thrive in warmer water) but I also understand that it will slow the ich life cycle down (if it is ich). While we are new to this hobby, we are doing our best to research and are open to suggestions. There's just a lot of information out there and some of it is conflicting. We want our fish to thrive and I want to reduce their stress and pain as much as possible but also want to keep them alive. Thanks!

Ok here's the thing. I just convert my salt water tank to fresh water. Basically I already do twice water change and still got around 1.003-1.005 ppt salinity. Is it save if I put in my fresh water fish?

for those who want to try salt treatment and dont have heater( i live in tropical country so i dont need heater), here is my experience with it.
I have multiple tanks with tetras and corydoras as im a big fan of tetras. Tetras and other fish adapt very well with 1 tbps of salt per gallon ( I didnt gradually add it as i find it pointless).
My corydoras however is not doing well, it swim frantically so i moved it into my temporary tank.
My live plants, duckweed, anubias barteri, java fern and amazon sword did well. I find it interesting so i researched it, and found out anubias, java fern and amazon sword tolerate salt very well as they can survive in low to mid brackish water

My Pleco has a big white chunk around his dorsal fin little smaller than a pencil eraser, appears to be spreading… was going to try salt but I also have Silver Dollars and Cory’s and a couple others I have no idea what are. Do you think I can get away with treating with salt or is there something else you’d recommend? The Pleco is about a foot long in a 100 gallon tank.
