    Just picked up a 2006 red FZ1, mint condition for $2500. The bike is flawless, 24k miles. love the power. It is a bit heavier then I am used to. But all and all, at the end of the day all my friends want to pull over and relax, I am never tired, which is awesome on the long mountain trips. Love my new fz1. Highly recommend this bike.

    The FZ1 is an awesome feat of engineering. The engine doesn't hit until past 8K RPM's. You never once got into the powerband on that bad daddy.

    Ah the FZ1, just sold mine a few months ago after not riding it for quite a while. But she provided me years of fantastic enjoyment from the mountains to a few track days.

      Precisely. The delay from twist to acceleration that he refers to only happens in high gears at low speed. If you're doing 50 mph and you want to immediately accelerate, dropping down a gear or two will give you IMMEDIATE throttle response.

      My thoughts exactly. That EXUP valve doesn't open until 7000RPM, and that's when it just starts to pull like crazy. It's like there are two separate bikes inside the FZ1 - a nice smooth cruising machine below 7k, and a super sport above 7k. Below 7k, there's no lurch to the acceleration, which makes it super easy to ride around your neighborhood or maneuver city streets, but then when you want to pass on the highway and you go through a couple gears at 8-11k rpms, it's a completely different experience.

    Reflash the ECU, upgrade the exhaust and the fz1 becomes a beautiful beast. It has super-smooth linear controllable power -- and lots of it -- with very solid handling. I was going to sell mine due to poor low RPM power and crappy throttle response, but the ECU reflash dramatically cured those problems (my 2006 model year was the worst for bad ECU fueling). It is a great multi-mission bike that is super reliable. Very good for carving up the mountain roads, intermediate touring and commuting. It is one of my all time favorites.

    I have a 2015 FZ1 and love it! I found it still its crate and put 38000 on it. If you want to turn it in to a beast, delete the factory exhaust (I installed a 2 brothers carbon fiber slip on), add a k&n air filter, and install a Power Commander 5. You add about 15hp, 500 rpm (12,500 red line), a top speed of 170 and reduce the bike weight by approximately 30lbs. I also reduced the drag of the bike by removing the front factory turn signals and the whale tail. The front signals were replaced with low profile LEDs and the taillight with a Custom LED Blaster X taillight which has integrated turn signals. LED headlights improve night riding visibility substantially. I highly recommend this bike.

    I have an FZ1 and have put over 12000 miles on it and it seems the perfect mix
    of power and also the ability to be laid back. I agree it can be heavy to push around, but, I am nearly 62, I would have difficulty thinking of a bike to change to.

    I looked at this video years ago, i see one of these for sale online.
    So i decided to look at videos about this bike.
    I like the small fearing and the engine is very powerful.
    It is a sport bike, but a little more relaxing of a ride.

    FZ1 is a great bike. Dosen't matter what video it is, everyone comments like as though they max any bike out all the time in any situation. In real life, that is not possible. On a track i'd love to see any commenters max out a 300 class bike and have top numbers. I cant do it. Most will never track a bike. Maxing out a bike on a track takes so much more talent than showing off at a stoplight.

    Whats up Chase? I stopped by Mountain Motorsports of Thornton rd. I forgot dudes name but he was a slender white dude. I drove my black and yellow 2003 Yamaha FZ1 up there and he stopped me before I got out the door. He admitted the mess out my bike. He said it's rare that you see a bike that I have of this year and condition without being scratched, dinged, laid down or beat up. I told him that my brother GAVE me this bike last week. I just had to go to Texas to pick it up. He told me that he gave me something special and it has been well taken care of. But anyways, he told me to watch this video. I told him that I've been watching your videos for about a month now. I really enjoy your videos and the information you provide. keep up the great work.

    I have two carbed versions. When you get the engine up above 9 the hold on factor kicks in you've got 2500 revs with meat in them to go. Also you need to ride a lot more and spend a lot more time with wider bars, flat trackers drift at insane angles with them and have absolute control. The FZ1 is very comfy and distance is no problem. To me it is the sports tourer. As for the suspension, it is very adjustable, I set mine softer as that's is the way I ride in my environs but it can go way hard if needed. Just glad to see someone on their first ride getting what this bike is about.

  • @valdimitroff5764
    @valdimitroff5764 5 років тому

    The suspension might be on the softer side but it saved my life. I hit a 4x4 with my 2008 FZ1 at 78mph. The hit damaged both of my wheels and launched the bike in the air. The bike performed flawlessly and didn't eject me. I escaped the accident without a scratch. My insurance carrier totaled my bike and I'm furious at them for not repairing it instead. I don't see myself riding anything else. This bike checks all the boxes for me.

    I got the same bike and color earlier this year. Got a deal on a 2014 a dealer was sitting on brand new, $2k off msrp, and factory warranty. I've put over 6k miles on it so far with zero complaints.
    I was looking for fast and comfy with the ability to take it on long trips and got what I wanted. It's also nice to have a metal tank to put a bag on.
    From what I've read, a tune will change all your issues (waiting for the warranty to expire). That, and it doesn't really wake up till 6-7k rpm.

    A side note about the suspension. I doubt your loner bike is dialed in for track-like performance. Compression, rebound and preload are adjustable on the front with rebound and preload on the back. I'm sure you can make it feel more "Sporty" without swapping springs or oil even.

    Great video. You seemed mostly fair with regards to not expecting this bike to act completely like a R1 or similar super sport. I like a balance of aggressive with long distance comfort so this bike is very appealing to me. Thanks for the video. Awesome personality!!

    I've had three FZ1's over the years. 2015 is the last "official" year for the bike, although still present on the Yamaha website (2015 model); right now you should get at least $2000 off the MSRP at a dealer.

    I waited until after i watched your video to comment and i'm so excited you enjoyed it! you pretty much hit the nail on the head. it's a mellow super-sport with all the power in the world, but easy to ride. My Gen1 is also my first street bike and i have yet to have any real complaints about the bike. One huge benefit to the newer gens is the fuel-injection. 4 carbs is a nightmare. however it has a shorter fuel range over all. (i'm getting 170-190 a tank) Though, just like the gen 1, i will say the Gen 2 has a pretty dorky looking stock windshield. luckily the guy i got my bike from had a mirror-finish windshield that matches the silver paint and just looks so much more aggressive. but i'm glad you liked it!

    • @XPsychowaffleX
      @XPsychowaffleX 10 років тому +1

      just a head's up, you wont be getting 170-190 per tank like the Gen 1. that's probably one of the few complains between the gen 2 and 1 is the shorter fuel range. BUT, i LOVE that black engine and more aggressive seat of the gen 2s. Though, the stock windscreen is dorky. mine GEN 1 has an aftermarket mirror-finished screen that matches my silver paint job.

  • @leefleishman3212
    @leefleishman3212 10 років тому

    You need to tell ramekin to get his ecu flashed, then ride it again. It makes it a much more aggressive midrange and smooths out the torque curve. An ecu flash should be every bike's first mod.

  • @lesenfantsterribles6898
    @lesenfantsterribles6898 4 роки тому +1

    I always liked these bikes still my fav. I love anything with 5 valves per cylinder. Helps with mid-range torque and still maintain high revs. Thats pretty much a downtuned yamaha r1. The fz1 has the "Genesis" motor in it. So if a riders looking the full shebang, the r1 is a better choice, but for all round the fz1. Ride brother 🤙

    A couple of points, first off, this bike is far from a "very dull knife" The suspension is all kinds of adjustable and as someone mentioned below...you could also change out the fork oil for something a little heavier. From what I could see in the tach views...you were never in the power band, where this bike really wakes up. Anything below 6K rpm is going to be fast, but not scary fast. When you hit 8K, things really get interesting. Thanks for the views though.

    About the throttle, Yamaha has been using some really viscous oil on all their brand new bikes. Supposedly, it helps with the break-in period.
    I just had my oil changed and the throttle response improved a lot. There is also a lot less engine breaking. Maybe you should test ride something that's already been broken into, because lately, Yamahas feel absolutely different after its first oil change.

    Did he ever say what yr it was? If an earlier model second gen the throttle response apparently needed to be Ecu mapped ,from what I’ve read and seen…I have a 09 , a lil rough around the edges with a ton of miles…. but even so after 4k rpm ,you better be ready if you’re twisting the wrist aggressively… am still getting to know it so I think I’ve only full throttled briefly due to catching up to shit so quickly …dont think I hit redline , no I know I haven’t and only got close a couple times …partly because after 70 mph I’m getting cross wind on my body , I assume because the puig windscreen I installed isnt angled correctly …yet…. And partly because I’m getting older and is been a few yrs (actually decades)since I’ve ridden consistently…..my point being..I’m no racer wanna be but have in the past ridden to many bikes limits. And usually with in the first or second ride of any distance. This fz1 after riding over an hr multiple times is still a mystery in that it’s still more bike than I need, which is awesome .though like I said I’m older (mid 50’s) so a younger dude may want more .which is easily gotten by Ecu flash and some other small upgrades .

    Agreed. I've had my EU spec '08 Fazer FZ1 since 2009 and I've done some shopping and really cannot find a suitable replacement so I will be keeping her! Mine is Lava red fitted with the OEM GT full fairing from Yamaha Japan. It changed the look into a much meaner beast that has eyes turning but without any flashy branding. Just the Yamaha badge on the tank. Its a comfortable cruiser that should not be underestimated. It is more akin to the pre crankplane R1 models. Not the other FZ models. Unfortunately, Yamaha discontinued the FZ1 and seem to expected customers to replace it with the Tracer series but those just don't have the look and feel :( Its also mad reliable!

    That motor sounds buttery smooth. I rode the FZ09 and it just didn't grab me like the GSXS1000 did. The power was fine but the seat sliding forward was horrible, there was quite a bit of buzz and the fueling was still not fixed like they said it should be. The Gixxer had better fueling.

    My dad recently went down on his 2002 Fz1 and we are looking for a new bike for him. He likes the sport-touring bikes (fz1, z1000, ninja 1000, etc) because they still resemble a sport bike but has the upright seating position. It would be awesome if you could do a review on the Ninja 1000. Thanks in advance.
    P.S. There's nothing like watching your dad wreck on a bike. I was riding in front of him on my cbr1000 and we were merging on to the highway. I watched in my mirror him get bumped by a van, go down, and slide all across the highway. Scariest thing you'll ever see! He was able to walk away from the wreck but some people don't get that chance.

So if a person likes mid range and top end performance it would be excellent for that.If you can, could you test out the long awaited Z800 coming to America in fall of 2015. 03 FZ1 was /is my first bike. It's all I've ever rode, as long as you respect it you'll should be fine. I personally like having the extra power it's there if you need or want it. If not it's good to just cruse around on.

      Clorox Bleach take the msf course, it's a tamed liter bike so it's not *as* powerful as other super sport, BUT it's still wayyyyy not powerful than a 600. Just be careful and remember, throttle control and mental maturity is key above all

  • @a.t.2023
    @a.t.2023 5 років тому

    From reading about this bike on the Internet, changing the sprocket would have helped with the issue you were seeing with the throttle. I am looking into getting one soon that is the same years as the one in the video. Thanks for the review.
