Don't grow potatoes unless you're on bad soil. For regular or rich soil, grow rice as your first crop, and once you have some excess food in storage, you can shift to corn. Rice grows very quickly, but it is very labor intensive (that is, you spend a lot of time planting and harvesting compared to your yields). Corn grows more slowly but it is very labor efficient and it lasts a long time in storage. Potatoes are in between, but they get less benefit/drawback from soil quality, so they are really only suitable for poor soil.
More you play, more addicted you be man. When you start understand about mods and start put some mods you will pass the 1000 hours of game easy hahaha.
Thank you so much for making this. When I just started out playing, your previous tutorial videos were the best resource to get me going. I replayed them whenever I got confused. I wish this one was a little more beginner friendly. You don't explain why you take some of the actions that you do and that is something that would have been very helpful to me as a new player. Thank you JJJ!
Thanks for the kind words and the feedback! Yeah this was a tricky balance of getting through the first 3 days AND explaining every single action and keep it less than a 3 hour video. lol. But essentially balance of time at work here
Wowww okay, thanks for this, really. I watched another "beginner tips, starting strategy" game and was like WTAF!??! "First thing's first: build a refrigerator".... Me after doing the tutorial: a refrigerator is a thing!?!? So yeah, thanks for this very easy to follow approach. I'm still learning how this game works but I know I'll love it once I get into it. It's sure intimidating though!
YAY! I'm so glad I could help! There definitely is a serious learning curve, but it is such a fun experience to learn and the game just makes you want to get better each time! Have fun!
Doing something like this on Naked Brutality is the best way I think. You learn very quickly what the important skills are - construction, cooking, plants. I never even start a colony without a pawn / pawns who are good at these things.
Dude this video is sublime. I dont have rimworld but have been interested in getting it. This gives a realy good idea what its like and helpful to hear you talk out your plan and not ramble on about random shit. Wel done!
@@sp-ce i did get it! Put about 25-30 hours in so far. There is a steep learning curve for sure. Probably restarted my colony about 4 times cuz i learned something new or different to prioritize each time.
If you have a nutrient paste dispenser you eliminate the possibility of food poisoning. It gives you like a -4 debuff but you can compensate for this by building a nice dining room. Also this elimates the need for a cook. It's a win win. Lol!
Nutrient Paste is way better for early game, it cuts down on all the time wasted cooking food. Just make sure to restrict your colonists to only eat Nutrient Paste Meals.
You didn’t talk about relationships (Lu and Nags are married) - do you factor this into choosing characters at all? Could you discuss in a future tutorial?
I don’t typically factor this into decisions when choosing colonists. It can be advantageous though if you can keep them both alive! Definitely can discuss in the future :)
Notices something the video maker didn't cover. Already knows about said mechanic. Posts multiple separate comments on one vid. why are you even here...?
This must be my first ever video comment in youtube and alwats see videos... this helped me a lot, this and the other tutorials videos, just subscribed, thanks again for all those in depth tutorials!
I never seen him make any type of command to change the wood wall into Stonewall. I was wondering if there's a quick way to change our walls to a better wall or do you have to click each one and build over
Great guide, thanks! -- What mod are you using to sort the items into categories in the top left corner? My screen gets a bit cluttered mid-late game currently.
ok at minute 13:00 how are you knowing what all of them are good at without looking or seeing on the screen their skills? do we need to write something down from their character sheet before going to manual priorities and stuff? or is alot of this guestimate stuff
There's a couple ways to see this. One, the color of their number is an indicator. If it's dark they are bad at it, if its lighter or gold-ish they have more skills at it. The other way is by hovering over the number and their skill at it will appear as you can see in the video. So you don't have to remember!
I haven't made any yet. It's possible though. Just haven't dove too far into late game Royalty enough to really feel comfortable making a tutorial for it
BTW, Nag and Lu were a couple, so you forgot to mention that they get a bonus if they sleep together. You also overlooked that and even split them into different shifts. Not that it really matters, but it could provide a bit of a bonus to both of them if they sleep together, as well as you having to build one room less. :) Targeted at anyone you just watched the video and maybe reading this comment. Not really at JJJ as there's hardly anything he can do about it. :D
@@stupidfuckingidiot basically... your name... You basically don't have the right to say that unless you yourself did. Have a nice day. :)
Absolutely! Rice is a great early game crop for quick food. Quickly becomes a time suck for your growers though if you can manage the time to get potato’s or corn
don't be afraid to get into it, between pausing, menus, youtube tutorials and rimworld wikipedia, you'll have plenty of chances to learn as you go, or read up before you do something specific. Once you get into mods, OOOOH boy then we are talking, I currently have around 150 mods lol
It definitely has a learning curve, but it is satisfying to learn and sooooooo worth it! I do have other tutorials that touch on the UI and menus that hopefully simplify it as well!
Hopefully pausing and stopping the video would be helpful. If you haven't checked out my previous tutorials, they are sort of a slower pace buildup to this video. This video is meant for sort of the middle ground starting out and not to be super slow but methodical.

There is a mod to replace walls with other types of materials instead of deconstructing, but there is no option for it in the vanilla game.
the mod name is replace stuff
