I am a dedicated fisherman . I follow about a 1/2 dozen flyfisherman on utube. Thanks for what u teach us. That video is in the top 5 all time in my viewing. What u did , how u did , and where u did , under the water conditions u did is completely unbelievable. Thanks again. It's going to be tuff to return to the east after that trip.
Nice of you to say, Dave! Really appreciate it. It is tough to get back east after a trip to MT. It is a special place. Thanks so much for watching the channel. Tight lines to you!
Cory - as usual a primo video and explanation of your technique and how to pick pockets and seams to read the water that all looks the same on the Madison! Great job, thanks for sharing your wisdom and expertise.
Enjoyed your video! I recognized a bunch of my favorite spots you fished in this video. I'm heading back there on May 1. I love to fish the Madison during runoff, when the water is high and off color. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed! It is a special place. Good luck to you. I'm sure it is a great time of the year with a chance to bust some nice ones! Appreciate you watching.
Thank you for another great video ! Great job on showing us how amazing Madison is . Really enjoying watching you having so much fun there ! Tight lines !!
Another primo video Cory. You are so right in saying the Madison is a Euro nympher's dream. What awesome fish you caught. Thanks, as always for explaining your tactics as far as positioning, patterns and weight management. That 20" + rainbow was a tank for sure. Those Madison trout really test your stamina. Nice work!
Thank you, Frank! It is a dream! Just love it there...EVERY fish gives you a workout. Still thinking about that tank. Appreciate you watching, my friend!
Once again, welcome to Montana. I hope you enjoyed your stay. I'm glad the Madison was open to fishing for you! I love my state and the fishing available. It's a wonderful place for so many reasons.
I have been a fly fishing for 25 years in Australia and NZ. I was always quietly sceptical about euro-nymphing until I came across your videos about a year ago. I use it about 40% of the time now when conditions make dry fly and traditional indicator fishing a waste of time because of drag. I am now puzzled about all the controversy of the technique. I believe it has made me a better fisherman because it forces you to think logically about what's actually happening sub surface and be precise in selection of nymph weight and presentation. Its fun and your videos have been a great help. I still love that long cast to a distant and difficult riser with a traditional line. Euro-nymphing has simply added another dimension to my day out on the river. I now carry two rods. Your doing a great job mate. Thanks.
Really appreciate and love your comment! I agree with you. It is another tool in your bag. I love casting a traditional dry fly line, as well, but there are a lot of times when it isn’t the best option. You have to meet the trout on their terms. Being versatile helps you do that. Thinking your way around a stream and putting together the puzzle makes it more enjoyable (at least for me!). I’m glad the videos have been helpful and thanks so much for watching, mate. Your part of the world is on my bucket list!
There may be better fishing videos on the internet but I’m not aware of any! You are an absolute master at both fly fishing and producing fly fishing videos. The way you so easily catch fish from rivers like the Madison with heavy, fast water and very educated fish is truly remarkable. My only question is: would you ever consider buying a wading staff? And your videos are routinely produced with your audience in mind. You explain the sections of water you are going to fish and the techniques you are going to use. You bring the fish to the net quickly and once the fish is in the net, you loosen your line allowing the fish to be handled easily. You wet your hands before touching the fish. You position the fish perfectly in front of the camera so we can take in the beauty of these aquatic jewels. And where necessary, you resuscitate the trout after an unusually long fight. Also, it’s evident that you don’t take things for granted when you thank the trout for playing along. Your videos are entertaining, educational and relaxing to watch. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you so much for your comment, Frank! Really appreciate it! My dad taught me a long time ago to appreciate and respect these beautiful fish. Treat them right and thank them so they will come back and play another day for me or someone else. I’m glad you enjoy the channel. And just to let you know, my wife has convinced me to carry a wading staff! Tight lines to you and thanks so much for watching!
I 'learned' to Euronymph on the Madison 2 yrs ago while picking up a camper for my truck. Started out with a heavy 11' 3 wt, 15 lb Maxima leader, heavy nymphs and pretty much only tightlined. Did fairly well but had to wade closer to the fish. After watching a few of your videos, now I'm tuck casting 20-25' with Sempe 16 leader, lighter nymphs with a 10' 2wt rod. Wish I can try the Madison now.
What a great place to learn! If I could teach one thing and one thing only to anglers, it is to learn to cast. You WILL become exponentially better. Nice job! I hope you get a crack at the Madison in the future.
here’s a fun video idea: how to enjoy a cigar while euronymphing. I tried it this past weekend and let me tell you it was a clown show after I hooked into a fish.
Thanks for your comments earlier this week on driving the bugs down against the current. I saw what you meant by your angle of the tuck cast. I'll have to work on that next time out. Absolutely incredible fish there and wonderful video and instruction as always!
Cory, my wife takes pictures on the river while I fish too. We are two lucky guys. Your video was wonderful and look forward to fishing there one day! Loved it!
The Platonic form of a great Euro video. Thanks, Cory. A couple of questions, if you don't mind: 1. On average, about how long was your tippet? 2. Did you tend to use one or two flies? 3. It's hard to see on the video, so could you tell us how you registered most of your strikes (visually or tactilely?
Thank you, Alex! 1. My average tippet length was a smidge under 4ft. It is rare that I ever go over that length in any stream. 2. I was using two flies. Normally in pocket water, I'll go with one...but the pockets tend to be larger there, so you can get a good drift with two. 3. 99% of my strikes were visual. Even in that heavy water or with heavy bugs, I had a nice bow in my sighter and could see the takes. Hope this helps and I appreciate you watching. Tight lines to you!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Appreciate it, Cory. Now, you can thank me later, but I'm going to give you a chance to show off. Seriously, having never fished the Madison, I'm wondering how good it really is. So, could you tell me about how many trout you caught per unit time (hour, day, etc.)?
@alexargyros7186 Gosh Alex, I’m not a big counter of fish. The only time I count is to 10. That is when I allow myself to have a cigar. After that, I lose track. I can tell you that I fished 7 out of 10 days on the Madison and everyday was the same. I had luck from the time I started until the time I ended. I averaged 6 hours a day out there. I did have 4 guys that were watching me fish an area for about an hour and a half one day…they approached me as I came out of the river and said they were counting and said I was catching one on every 4th cast. I did think I was doing pretty well out there. I guess if I gave a number I was probably averaging 60 fish a day for a 6 hour day. I love the Madison, it is one special place. Big, powerful fighters…
wow that was awesome, great video my friend. that madison river has extremely nice fish in it. you did really well high sticking, the only way to nymph if you ask me, it is just the ultimate presentation when you master it. thanx for the video
Appreciate it, FC! The Madison is a special place. Totally agree with how Euro is the way to go. Thanks so much for the compliment. Tight lines to you!
I love your videos, they are so informative, and then have improved my Fishing immensely. I’ve recently went to a gram weighted system from my flies to be more depth Perfection I would like to see your Fly boxes and see how you would arrange them mine arranged by weight only thank you very much. Tight lines. Rich
Cory, as amazing as this video was, I need to talk abt your amazing wife here…I was “horseshoe” close to getting my wife in some waders to join me on the river, I even found some “pink-ish” waders at Sportsman’s warehouse, but she “didn’t feel comfortable”. I immediately showed her your wife in this video on the bank in hers, and she was like, “I should have got those waders”. Thank you Cory. Thank you Kelly! 😂
Just seen a post on the Madison river brown and rainbow trout’s own social media channel ‘ FlickTuck’ warning not to react to any well tied Jack Daniels flies that are presented by a tuck cast by an out of towner tourist smoking a cigar 😅 great video amigo …bet you needed another vacation to recover from all that combat fishing ! Some really amazing fish and tips, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your good lady
Haha! TK, my friend! I'm trying to figure out how not to be a tourist there and become a local! But at the very least, I'm up for another MT vacation to recover from the last one. Thanks for watching, mate. Tight lines and cheers from me and my lady!
Great video Corey, I love stopping in at Slide Inn and then heading down to 3 Mile Bridge, and you certainly did it justice ! I was wondering what the flows were when you were there and what size tippet were you using for those conditions. I found that landing fish on the Madison can be harder that hooking them ! Thanks much, keep up the good work.
Appreciate it! Stopping at the Slide Inn is a must while there, for sure! The flows were around 1300 CFS. I was using 5x. It is always an experience when you have one on the end of your line on the Madison. It adds to the fun! Thanks so much for watching. Tight lines.
Another great video Cory. Thank you. I would love to get there someday! What rod are you using in that kind of water? Big fish in that strong current. Impressive.
Thank you, Michael. It is a place every fly fisherman’s need to go! I was using a T&T Contact ll 10ft 9in 3wt. Does a great job in that type of water and those fish. Appreciate you watching!
OK, you've convinced me...next year Madison is on the list of must-visit places. In your opinion, what is the best time of year? Do you think Sep/Oct would keep fishing well? A lot of great nuggets in this clip. I especially like your counsel re: keeping the fish upstream and working it to the shallows. Super motivating Cory!
It is a special place, JJ! I go the beg-mid July and the fishing is fantastic and really consistent. You can’t go wrong to go then. I do know Sept/Oct is a great time as well. Less people and cooler temps. It really depends what you want to experience. Glad you enjoyed and tight lines!
Thank you, Richard. Check this video out here: ua-cam.com/video/_LsHADwel28/v-deo.htmlsi=-sBCSTuB3_lgmPZ8 My personal formula is in the description. I show you my setup. In this video, I have straight pink/white Pezon & Michel. You can have anywhere from 23-29ft. Hope this helps.
I wonder how you net this chunks so quickly and easily. I'm always afraid that my line breaks. Today I fought a 4-5 lb trout for like 10 minutes and in the end it snapped 5x at the tippet ring... it happened at the very tail of a pool with strong current, if I let it go any farther it would slide into a long rapid. I won't have a chance to hook a fish that big soon. A video on netting huge fish in very difficult conditions would be great!
Hey Anton. Each fish and area you hook them in is different. But you need to get that rod parallel to the surface and use the base of the rod (that's where the power is). In this video, you see me do this as soon as I hook one. The great thing about euro rods is that they act like a shock absorber, but you have to use the whole rod to work. If you hold the rod high, you give the fish the advantage. If you keep it low and parallel, you have a better chance of turning it to come upstream or guiding it to the side in a more shallow or slower current. Hope this helps. The next time I'm on the Madison, I'll do a video on fighting fish.
@@OldDominionTroutBum This time I should probably blame my old cheap tippet rings, it could easily be the reason. I never thought about it before and now regret that I didn't buy Cortland.
Another amazing video Cory. The power of those fish in the Madison is unreal. You definitely got a workout in that day. Just one question. Did the wife happen to get any pics of the little mishap at the log? 😂 Just glad you were ok. And the main thing is you saved the rod. Tight lines buddy.
Thank you, Brett! Those fish really are something. Some of the hardest fighting fish I’ve ever experienced. And haha! Those photos will be on a blooper reel someday. She is keeping them in a special file! Appreciate you watching and tight lines!
Great video! Like always!😂 did I here you say that when the wind picks up that you upsize the bead size in order to make up for the loss of tension and the rising of your bugs?
Thank you, Cole! I did bead up when the wind kicked up because it was ripping my bugs out of the drift. Going up one sized helped to stabilize it. Appreciate you watching.
I appreciate it! Have fly fished for years but just started euro nymphing and your channel/videos has been a big help with patterns and techniques! So keep it up!
Thank you for another great video. After watching you battle all of those monsters in heavy current, I thought of a general gear question. Do you find that the microleader will fatigue over time and become more susceptible to breaking? If so, do you periodically change the leader to try to stay ahead of this issue? Thanks.
Appreciate it, Stephen. I fished there for 10 days and I probably changed my leader 3 or 4 times. Not really because of the pressure I was putting on fish, but just from checking it for nicks, frays, weakness, etc... It is good practice to do that. If I found something, I would change it. If I didn't, I would keep going. I'll do that anywhere I fish. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
It can handle one if you hook into one, but I wouldn't go after them with it. If you are going after a steady dose of large fish, I would definitely go up to a 6 weight (or maybe the 4wt, depending on the weight of your flies/stream conditions). T&T makes one, as does Diamondback.
Cory, do you have a video on the hair tie around the fighting butt? I’ve heard this will help with leader drop, but I thought those galvans were full cage.
I haven’t made a video…But attach it around the butt and the reel cage. The reason is sometimes your thin leader can get caught behind the reel and get wrapped around the butt. This eliminates the problem. Appreciate you watching.
I keep riffling through my wife’s “accessory” drawer looking for one of these “hair” objects. I finally had to admit what I was doing when she walked in on me in the bathroom.
@ Cory, were you using a T&T 10’ 2 wt. in one of your videos fishing a Montana river for cuttthroat, browns and rainbows. In the video you were using dry dropper and tight line tactics.
@terrymaxwell2130 Terry, check out this video here…I believe it is the one you are referencing: ua-cam.com/video/J_tk4oQDF0I/v-deo.htmlsi=vSnv9d0rHtc6NIod Also, yes, I am doing virtual one-on-ones. Contact me through my website: Olddominiontroutbum.com. You will see the rates.
Hey David. It is a hair band from my wife. I attach it to my reel and around the butt because sometimes your thin leader can get caught behind the reel and get wrapped around the butt. This eliminates the problem. Appreciate you watching.
Hello again, Cory. I have a random question for you. I know you have a 10' 9 Thomas and Thomas, but was wondering what weight it is? The reason I ask is be cause today I was throwing streamers at a local community pond that was supposed to have 8-10" stockers in it and hooked in to a 17" rainbow. I was using my 9' 5wt and it was a bit of a battle. I will be fishing the Madison in October and am wondering if my 3wt euro rod will be enough? Thanks!!
I was using my 3wt there. You’ll be able to handle them, just make sure you use the bottom of the rod to fight them. Keep a low upstream rod angle. Good luck to you!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks for the reply. I'm getting excited. I live in Northern Utah. If it's as good as it is in your videos I may have to make it an annual thing. 😁
@joerob3449 the strongest part of the rod is the bottom, but in order to use it you must turn your rod parallel to the water/keep it low. If you keep the rod high, you will only be using the top which is the more limber part. If you do this, you give the fish all the advantage.
@@OldDominionTroutBum hello Again. We just got back from Montana. Fishing the Madison was a different experience. I live two minutes from the Provo and three hours from the Green. That's what I was expecting. Huh!! That river has amazing current. I hooked into something using 5x tippet and it instantly broke me off. I switched up to 4x and never had a problem after that. I caught two of the biggest white fish I've ever caught. I could fish for those all day long. They were both 18" + fish. When we got there it was cold and snowed on us so the fish didn't feel much like playing, but it was still great. Thanks for your tips and pointers!!

Awesome video. I know you talk about your line and leader set up but could you make video putting it all together. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, Richard. Check this video out here:

My personal formula is in the description.
I show you my setup. In this video, I have straight pink/white Pezon & Michel. You can have anywhere from 23-29ft.
Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thank you.
Good stuff. A workout!!

¡Gracias por mirar, amigo mío!
Hey Cory..great action ..for reference, was this august??
Thanks and keep em coming
Len
Appreciate it, Len. I was there in mid July and have missed it every day since!
@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks ..it is an amazing area
When you fish out there with the heavy water and bigger fish do you upsize your tippet? I know you say you like to fish 6x and 7x.
Hey Randy...I was using 5x on the Madison. With that current and the size of the fish, you have to upsize it. Appreciate you watching.
Did you have a dropper as well? Good stuff!
I did. I had a France Midge or a small perdigon. Appreciate you watching!
Spettacolo👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
😎🎣
Grazie!!
Just a quick question, would you say you can handle a 6lbs - 10lbs great lake steelhead on that same rod you are using? (T&T 3wt contact II)
It can handle one if you hook into one, but I wouldn't go after them with it. If you are going after a steady dose of large fish, I would definitely go up to a 6 weight (or maybe the 4wt, depending on the weight of your flies/stream conditions). T&T makes one, as does Diamondback.
You are an absolute badass!!!! I wish I could contact nymph with you!!! 👊👊👊
Haha. Appreciate it, Isaac! Thanks so much for watching. Tight lines to you!
Awesome video what rod and reel are you using.
Appreciate it! I was using a T&T Contact ll 10ft 9in 3wt. The reel is a Galvan GEN 3.5.
What size is that T&T you are using? Could that be a 10 ft 2 wt.
Terry, it’s the 10’9” 3wt. Appreciate you watching.
@ Cory, were you using a T&T 10’ 2 wt. in one of your videos fishing a Montana river for cuttthroat, browns and rainbows. In the video you were using dry dropper and tight line tactics.
Also Cory are you still doing telephone teaching sessions, if so how much?
@terrymaxwell2130 Terry, check out this video here…I believe it is the one you are referencing:

Cory did you guys base out of Bozeman or West Yellow? Im headed out next summer - trying to decide myself
We stayed in Ennis. Right in the heart of the Madison.
Corey. Why do u have the band at the bottom of the reel. Never seen that before
@@OldDominionTroutBum awesome video what do you mean by using the bottom of the rod to fight the fish? Thanks
What line are you using
Pezon & Michel Color Line for my leader with Airflo Euro Nymphing Fly Line. My setup is in the description. Appreciate you watching.
What tippet you using? 4x?
Chad, I was using 5x. Appreciate you watching.
What’s tied around your fighting butt?
It is a hair band from my wife. I attach it to my reel and around the butt because sometimes your thin leader can get caught behind the reel and get wrapped around the butt. This eliminates the problem. Appreciate you watching.
Hi Corey. The water looks up? What time of year were u there
Hey David. I was there in July. It was up higher than normal for that time. CFS was around 1300(ish).
Thanks Corey. We’re u far up from 3 dollar bridge. I thought I might have seen u. We’re always up there when u are you
hey Corey, was wondering if you did any other kinds of flyfishing tactics other than tight lining? Would be interesting to see some of your techniques with dry flies or streamers?
@genoquodala6816 hey Gene-I do it all. I don’t film everytime I go out, but you will see some dry-fly and more streamer fishing from me in the near future. Appreciate you watching.
@@davidpolk8676 more than likely that was me. Spent a lot of time around the 3 Dollar. Next time, come and see me!
Are you fishing a micro leader here?

Yay!!
Appreciate it, Sholom!!
5x .....man....pucker factor is high lol
Haha-it is strong stuff!
Don’t tell Kelly Gallup you’re euro nymphing on ‘his’ river…😂
