Anything that gets people to look away from their phone is a plus.
What usually gets people away from their phones is the sound of the vehicle honking their horn just prior to the collision.
Absolutely! We believe raising awareness on the road is crucial, and if loud pipes help grab attention, that’s a win for everyone. Safety first! Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB
Loud pipes and LEDs will definitely get you more noticed
I’m 68 years old I’ve been driving motorcycle since I’ve been 12 years old and all the years I’ve been driving. I’ve been hit twice from the rear once in my 20s once in my 40s both at stop signs so now when I see a car coming in the River mirror I hit my brake and wave my hand seems to work for me.
Absolutely! Loud pipes and vibrant LEDs can definitely make a bike stand out. It's all about raising awareness on the road! Thank you for commenting! MB
Speaking of LED lights...what say you about the breake lights on the helmets. I did not like them at first however, I saw a group of guys riding with them at dawn and they made them more noticeable. Loud pipes get you noticed but, as stated in the video, they will not held in an accident.
I have not seen the brake lights on the helmet, but what could go wrong with more awareness? Thanks for commenting! MB
Purely antidotal experience, but I was driving on the highway in my work truck (high tool box bed) and I was in the center lane of 3 lanes. I realized my exit was coming up and I needed to get over in the right lane. I could hear a bike but couldn’t find him in the mirrors. I slowed down and the loud sporty eventually moved out of the blind spot. If it had been a Rebel 250, I’d have changed lanes.
That's a great point! Loud bikes can definitely help in those tricky situations, especially when visibility is limited. It highlights the importance of being aware on the road. Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Don't know about saving lives, but they certainly let distracted drivers know you're near. They might not see you but they will fuckin' will hear you.
Yes, making them aware that you are there is a big part of it. Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
Hi there, been riding for 40 plus years. Yes loud pipes are a nice touch and if the bike is tuned correctly they enhance the bike’s performance. I have standard pipes on my 22 ST 117. I think it’s both a meath and fact in certain situations the louder pipes will attract attention. But other times they are just a hassle. With my bike I believe the sheer size is sometimes more of a warning to other motorists. You have to have the motorcyclist 6 senses read the traffic. I find that loud pipes are more of a problem on long distance run’s the noise actually makes it harder to concentrate on the road. So if someone has an exhaust system that is fundamental nice sounding but not the crack and pop let me know. And with any exhaust system when you hit the peak speed it always blends in with the road noise. Cheers
Good Add and that is why Kevin said that he revs his motor to make the exhaust sound louder when he is trying to get someone's attention. It is all about raising awareness and anything you can do to raise more awareness is another layer of safety. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Agree 100%, and not just for other vehicles. Here in northern Wisconsin, deer are an ever present danger and loud pipes are a pretty effective deterrent.
Absolutely! Loud pipes can really help alert both drivers and wildlife. It's especially important in areas with so many deer around! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Great job Kevin!
Yes, sound travels at over 700mph so no ones outrunning their pipes.
Totally agree about louder pipes being another tool we use to survive. And the fact Harley's sound good with a nice set of pipes on is just an added bonus!
Thanks for your insight! Glad you like the video. Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
You are absolutely right I have seen numerous times were people do react to loud pipes now You are starting to see a lot of rice burners running loud pipes absolutely true loud pipes do save life's 😀 🎉 thank you for your videos 📹 😊
Thanks for your support! It’s great to hear your experiences align with this-loud pipes certainly raise awareness! Thank you for commenting! MB
My exhaust has saved me countless times. People overlook bikes and i can see them react when i rev the engine! Arguing this is absurd! Great video.
Thanks for the kind words! It’s awesome to hear how your exhaust has made a real difference in your riding experience. Those reactions can really help keep us safe on the road! Thank you for commenting! MB
Loud pipes.. definitely can help keep distracted drivers more aware of your proximity. When driving my sport coupe which has numerous horrible blind spots to the sides and rear, I very often hear a loud vehicle before ever having any visual contact… that includes both cars and motorcycles. I definitely prefer the sound from the Bubs Short Shots on my Fatboy, and consider the loud music they make to be another tool for defensive riding.
Absolutely! Loud pipes can be a crucial part of staying safe on the road, especially with distracted drivers. It’s great to hear that the Bubs Short Shots are working well for you on your Fatboy. Every tool in our defensive riding toolkit helps! Thank you for commenting! MB
Even if you leave other drivers completely out of the equation, I have had VERY close calls on a mousey-quiet bike with deer and dogs. On the other hand, I have seen many deer on the side of the road up ahead of me that have turned around and went back into the woods, just from the sound of my drag pipes, no action on my part. And I completely agree that drivers 100% notice the sound of my bike even if I am in their blind spot temporarily and are aware that I am there because they heard me. It is crazy to say that a louder vehicle is MORE likely to go unnoticed. Loud Pipes SAVE Lives, 100%
Absolutely! Your experiences really highlights how loud pipes can make a difference, both with wildlife and other drivers. It’s great that you’ve found a way to enhance your safety on the road. Loud pipes definitely have their advantages! Thank you for commenting! MB
I know my pipes rumble the seat of people next to me on the freeway. Ive noticed several times that people have checked their mirrors when I'm close. It definitely brings attention to your presence. I drive a truck and I definitely feel and hear loud bikes when they are close to me. I'm also lit up like the starship enterprise and Ive had a significant drop in the people who pull out in front of me. Long story short, be seen, be heard.
Absolutely! Loud pipes and vibrant LEDs can definitely make a bike stand out. It's all about raising awareness on the road! Thank you for commenting! MB
I can't tell you have many times I've been in my car, shoulder checked...clear...hit the signal light, check mirror and by god there's a quiet sport bike there.
On the other side, someone on their phone wakes up and flips me the bird when I crack open the pipes to let them know I'm there. Loud pipes have saved me loads of grief! If they're not looking for me, they're gonna hear me!
Loud pipes definitely have their place! It's frustrating when others aren't paying attention, and sometimes sound is the best way to get noticed. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I have always said loud pipes save lives. In July, I had someone in an SUV turn so close in front of my Low Rider S that I had no way out, and I slammed into the side, broke several bones, and totaled my bike. Part of me says that maybe loud pipes don't save lives... the other part says, "Well, I didn't actually die, so maybe they do."
In all seriousness, I, too, have always noticed the difference of people's awareness of me from riding quiet bikes to loud bikes.
I’m really sorry to hear about your accident-that sounds terrifying! It's great to hear you're okay. Your experience highlights how complex this issue is. Loud pipes can definitely increase awareness, but it's also a reminder of how vigilant we need to be on the road. Thanks for sharing your story and for commenting! 😎 MB
@DKCustomProducts Thanks. I appreciate it. Also, thank you to everyone at DK custom products for all the effort you put into awareness and products and accessories.
My bike also had some of your products on it. So when I get another one, I'll have to buy some more.😁
Ride save everyone!!!
Glad you like the videos, information and the parts! Thank you for your business and support! 👍 MB
I have another observation/comment. A couple times, when cars did not know I was close to them and were driving a bit chaotically, I've hit the throttle to get around them quickly. The sudden loudness of my pipes, caught the oblivious driver off guard, and their reaction was to swerve. It was a flight-or-flight reaction and could've actually caused them to swerve into another car or me. So, I'd offer the suggestion that those of us with loud pipes should also think ahead about what the car driver might do, if we suddenly slammed a bunch of decibels into their eardrums, especially if they didn't know that we were there.
I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. I like these discussions, as often they present me with a new perspective. I hope that my comments are likewise constructive. I really like your content and your products! Keep up the good work.
That’s a thoughtful observation! It’s important to consider how sudden noise can affect driver reactions. Being proactive and anticipating their responses can help us avoid potential dangers. I appreciate your constructive approach to the discussion-it's always great to share perspectives! Thank you for sharing and for commenting! 😎 MB
I'm happy with quieter pipes, but in my long experience riding the highways with both HD and race replicas, loud pipes SAVE LIVES.
People don't look but they hear you.
That’s a solid point! Loud pipes can definitely grab attention when drivers aren't paying attention. It’s all about finding what works best for each rider while keeping safety in mind! Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
They can study all the motorcycle crash numbers they want and try to factor in whether the bike had loud pipes, in an attempt to debunk that loud pipes have a direct effect on safety but, what they can not quantify is how many times a crash was avoided BECAUSE the loud pipes on a bike helped the surrounding traffic become more aware that a bike was near them and in turn, heightening their awareness before they make any movements.
Exactly! It’s hard to measure the times an accident was avoided because of loud pipes. Sometimes, it’s those unquantifiable factors that really make a difference in safety on the road. Thank you for commenting! MB
im 70, been driving a motorcycle for over 55 years, the deaf granny or gran-pa or the kid in the civic with a 4000 watts sound system wont ear a dam thing, use your head and always check around and pretend the might not stop or see you and always have a plan b if it happens, that saved my life way more then my rinehart, over the years, it just became natural and i was doing it in my car, saved me twice from a major crash
Great advice!
KP
Your approach to staying aware and having a plan is crucial for safety on the road. It’s great to hear that your instincts have kept you safe over the years! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
One thats a real life saver, when i get to a green traffic light, i always slow down a bit and make sure the other guys are really stoping on the red, one day, someone was foing like it was green, had the time to slow more and beep my horn to wake him up
That’s a smart approach! Staying cautious at intersections can make all the difference. Glad you were able to avoid a close call! Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
Accidents happen in many ways where pipes play no role. As you said, why not just blow the horn. We need to pay attention, period. As I said before, when stopping, I activate my flashers to help get their attention .
Absolutely! Staying alert is crucial, and using your horn and flashers is a smart way to increase visibility. It’s all about combining awareness with good practices on the road! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I had a guy start to pull out in front of me. I didn’t have time to hit the horn button. I yelled as loud as I could and he stopped 1/2 way out on the road. I have led head lights, spot lights & white led running lights that turn yellow when signal is activated. My pipes are pretty loud but I was only going 55 so they are not loud when cruising
That’s a great save! Sometimes a loud yell can be just as effective. It sounds like you have a solid setup for visibility and safety on the road! Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
Yes…we need to always pay attention!!! But that doesn’t always cover the idiotic maneuvers of distracted drivers 😳
😎👍 MB
Loud pipes sound great. I default to braking and swerving drills to rely on my skill, rather than to rely on if someone hears me. Usually, here in Florida, if they hear you, they still don't care and will still slam into you
That’s a smart approach! Skills like braking and swerving are essential, especially in busy areas. It's frustrating when drivers don't pay attention, regardless of noise. Staying alert and ready is key! Having Loud Pipes is just another tool in the tool box. Thank you for commenting! 😎MB
I agree that loud pipes wake up drivers who are on the phone or engaged in conversation with their passenger. In 45 years of riding, I've noticed many drivers are not paying attention to their driving. If I were a policeman, I would be giving tickets to these oblivious drivers!
Absolutely! It's alarming how distracted some drivers can be. Your experience really highlights the need for more awareness on the road. Loud pipes can definitely help cut through those distractions! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Load pipes help a lot. When I move through traffic they know I am there and pretty much everyone let's me move through. I live in North Carolina, we have a lot of Southern drivers, they are very polite when it comes to motorcyclists they almost always give the right away.
That’s awesome to hear! It’s great that loud pipes help you navigate traffic safely. Southern drivers can definitely be courteous to motorcyclists. Sounds like you have a good riding experience in North Carolina! Thank you for commenting! MB
They have helped get me noticed 1000’s of times. Loud pipes save lives!
Glad loud pipes are helping you get noticed. It is all about raising awareness on the road. Thank you for commenting! MB
I just asked everybody where I work if they ever heard a motorcycle before seeing it…everyone said yes!!! LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!!!
Good way to get some good data! Thank you for sharing and for commenting! 😎 MB
I was going to turn left but the sun was blinding me and couldn't see well. As I was about to turn I heard the pipes and hit the brakes. The loud pipes saved the guy and his old lady. So they do save lives.
That's a perfect example of how loud pipes can make a difference! Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad you all made it out unharmed! MB
I ride a 2023 Road glide 3 with stock exhaust, and I have to say, it’s incredibly quiet. This is a big plus for me, especially since I value keeping the peace in my neighborhood. My wife, on the other hand, rides a 1994 Sportster equipped with a full Screaming Eagle exhaust that sounds absolutely beautiful but is loud enough to wake the dead. When I start my trike at 5 AM so I can ride to work, I don't disturb anyone. But if my wife takes her bike out early (which is rare), there’s no chance anyone nearby will sleep through the roar. I'd prefer a better, louder exhaust, but waking my neighbors several days a week might not go down very well. Ironically, we have an MC club about a eighth mile up the road. They definitely have loud pipes, and I can hear them fire up their engines sometimes. Got to figure this out. Neighbors are very friendly. Hate to change that.
That’s a great perspective! Balancing personal enjoyment with being considerate of neighbors is important. Sounds like you’ve found a good compromise with the Road Glide. Maybe there’s a way to upgrade the sound without being too disruptive-something that enhances the ride while keeping the peace! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
More than one thing can be true, in between extremes.
Yes, I can hear a loud bike behind me, but not as far back as I can it in front of me.
But this difference doesn't matter to the topic - if somebody can hear a bike behind them, that factually helps increase awareness!
Along with low frequency like exhaust carrying further than high frequency like a siren.
I would think this correlates to saving lives, but don't know or care. Increasing other driver awareness helps keep us safe. Also hi viz jacket and helmet.
Exactly! It’s all about increasing awareness in various ways-sound, visibility, and gear all play a role in safety. Every little bit helps, and it's great that you're focusing on what works for staying safe on the road! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
When lane splitting out here in Cali. Loud pipes definitely do save lives.
That’s a great point! Loud pipes can definitely help get the attention of drivers in tight situations. It’s all about staying safe! Thank you for commenting! MB
Yes, I believe louder pipes do help . I have experienced situations where people on bicycles, walkers, runners, and cars can hear me.
Absolutely! It’s all about increasing awareness for everyone on the road. Those loud pipes can really make a difference in getting noticed! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
It doesn't hurt, my insurance guy said he'd rather insure a Harley than he would rice Cuz 4 2 reasons, 1st was ya spend enough for em you take care in riding em. 2nd You can always hear em comin
That’s an interesting take! I get the point about people taking better care of their bikes when they invest more in them. And yeah, the sound of a Harley definitely makes them stand out and raise awareness! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Many times my my Screaming Eagle pipes on my Heritage have made myself aware to drivers changing lanes and from deer along the road side. Too many times I've hit the blinker instead of the horn especially when wearing full fingered gloves.
That’s a great example! Loud pipes can definitely help alert both drivers and wildlife. It’s all about using every tool available for safety, especially when those instinctive reactions kick in! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I have been Riding for 10 solid years. I have relatively loud pipes but not beyond any legal limit in my state of MA. During these past years , I almost was hit in the rear 4 different times at a crosswalk allowing pedestrians to cross (a State mandated law). When I am riding, the majority of vehicles stay much farther behind me keeping a good distance away if I should suddenly stop. It is very obvious that when I am riding, the exhaust noise makes me more evident and at an idled stop, I am more vulnerable. Loud pipes do save lives; at least mine!
I get where you're coming from! Being more visible and heard on the road can definitely help with safety. Now you just have to figure out a safety feature for those crosswalks. Glad to hear it’s worked for you in keeping a safe distance. Stay safe out there! Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
My experience is the same, Can’t count the times I’ve stopped someone from pulling out in front of me with a couple revs!
"That’s awesome! It’s great to hear how effective those revs can be in getting attention. Every little bit helps keep us safer on the road! Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
I’m With You 100% on This Brother Kevin
Thanks for the support! It’s great to see others sharing the same perspective on safety and awareness! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I had an old timer pull up on me and began pulling over into my space. I hit the brake, pulled to the passenger side, and his buddy in the passenger seat, gave me the finger with a grin...some people just don't care. 98% of the time, loud pipes have made others aware that I'm using this space...my horn is only used by accident...lol
Sounds like you've had some close calls! It’s great that loud pipes help keep you visible. Stay vigilant! Thank you for commenting! MB
Bright lights and loud pipes may or may not help but they 100% don’t hurt. So I’m all for them!! Especially now with cell phones. I started riding in the mid 90’s. It’s significantly more dangerous today!!!
Yes, they’re another important way to increase awareness on the road. Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
My family here's me coming home from 1 block away. They here me!
That's great! It’s nice to have that kind of reassurance for your family. Loud pipes definitely help everyone know you’re on your way! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
I agree with every thing you said pertaining to cagers. Deer, now that's a different story. I see many of them and I have hit two of them, one at night and one in the day. You don't hit deer when they are running away from you. So you have a loud Harley, so does everybody else. I think that is part of the problem, they get desensitized. Just riding down the road they don't move until I pull the clutch and rev the motor. That doesn't always work either, even one time a Doe didn't trot away until I tooted the horn. I have road up on deer just a little ways in the ditch and stopped and talked to them. No I'm not a deer whisperer. I left and the deer staid. About a week and a half ago a deer ran out right in front of me as it was getting dark. I didn't get home before dark. Dam days are getting shorter and the deer move around more this time of year. Near as I can tell they can hear me coming a mile away so they know I am coming. They lie in wait until I get to them then they jump out and try to kill me. And they dam near did twice. The moral of the story when it comes to deer boys and girls, don't count on your loud pipes to save your ass. Sometimes I don't think they like them, I would have asked but he was gone when I got up.
That’s a tough situation! Deer can be unpredictable, and it’s frustrating when noise doesn’t seem to help. It sounds like being cautious and aware is key, especially this time of year. Glad you’re safe after those close calls! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Definitely let's a driver know that you are near!
Absolutely! Loud pipes can really help increase awareness on the road. It’s great to hear you’re finding that benefit! Thank you for commenting! MB
Do you think loud cars get in less accidents? All loud pipes do is annoy people. Learn to ride defensively. I’ve had been endorsement for 49 years so I’ve got a few miles under my belt.
That’s a valid perspective! Defensive riding is crucial, but loud pipes can add an extra layer of awareness for others on the road. It's all about finding a balance between safety and consideration. Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
I agree Steve. I have driven a loud and large semi truck for over 38 years. People can definitely SEE it and HEAR it yet they still pull out or cut me off daily. Cell phone users have no eyes or ears. Distracted drivers are worse than drunk drivers.
My stock bikes always have people riding my six or hanging in my baffles... my bikes with aftermarket exhaust always have nice buffers around them. No one stays in my rear quarters or closer than 2 car lengths from me under throttle.
May not have saved my life... but prove it hasn't made me safer.
That’s a great point! It sounds like your aftermarket exhaust has really helped create that space on the road. Even if it hasn’t directly saved your life, feeling safer while riding is what matters most! Thank you for commenting! MB
I agree 100%
Glad you like the video and agree with Loud Pipes Saving Lives! Thank you for commenting! MB
Sound reflects like a wave. So people all around you hear the sound of your bike.
Exactly! Sound really does carry, and it’s a great way to make sure others are aware of your presence on the road. Thank you for commenting! MB
Either way I love my drag pipes!
That's awesome! Drag pipes definitely make a statement! Thank you for commenting! MB
Yip they get the attention alright. My Vance & Hines Bigshot Staggered set off car alarms too. Cracks me up😂😂😂😂😂 My neighbors think I'm nuts but I am simply about survival.😂
That’s hilarious! Nothing like some loud pipes to keep things interesting. It’s great that you’re prioritizing safety and having fun while doing it. Enjoy the ride! 😂 Thank you for commenting! MB
I drove a big truck for the last 15 years before retiring. Never once did I hear a Honda or any other bike with stock pipes coming up the side of my truck.
Yeah a bike is certainly not always heard before it is seen, but there are occasions where loud pipes do raise awareness on the road. Thank you for sharing and for commenting! MB
At one time in life, yes, they did. Nowadays, cars and trucks are designed to keep noise out of the cabin area, so no. You can be next to many high-end cars, and they still won't hear your bike. So, I still say no.
That's an interesting perspective! It’s true that modern vehicles are designed to minimize noise, which can make it harder for riders to be heard. It’s definitely a complex issue! Thank you for commenting! MB
In my experience, having emitting a rumble makes me more "visable". I have a loud horn and a ton of lights, including Amber strobes front and rear.
That’s a solid setup! The combination of sound and visibility really helps on the road. Staying noticeable is key for safety! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I like the sound of my loud pipes, but they sure wear me out on long trips. As for whether people hear me or not, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run up on cars with my red and blue’s flashing and the siren wailing and they drive on down the road oblivious to the fact that I’m behind them. Most people drive with the windows up, radio and AC blasting, and do not hear anything outside of their car until you are right up on top of them.
With so many distractions in cars, being loud and visible is key. You will definitely have a better chance of someone knowing you are there if they can hear you and see you. Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
Absolutely correct.
Glad you like the video! Loud Pipes are certainly a great way of raising awareness on the road! Thank you for commenting! MB
I’ve revved pipes in anticipation and got cross traffic attention stopping them from pulling out in front of me and also in traffic vehicles beside me
Good deal!
KP
When you split lane on the 405 in Kalifornia it sure does.
Definitely! Lane splitting on busy roads like the 405 makes being heard even more important. Loud pipes can really help make sure you're noticed in that kind of traffic! Thanks for commenting! 😎 MB
DID YER HEAR ME COMIN ! THEN IT'S WORKING 👂🤣🤣🤣
Haha, it sounds like it’s doing its job! Love the enthusiasm-better to be heard than surprised. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
So, i'm kinda on the fence about loud pipes saving lives. I have two bikes. Heritage 114 with quite loud pipes. Ultra Limited with moderately loud pipes. I love the rumble. I actually don't think that they get me noticed, more than having good lights on the bike or, more importantly, staying out of anyone's blind spot for more than a second or two. It is very true that cage drivers just don't see bikes. Car drivers see bikes and don't think that bikes need to be treated any differently than cars (meaning, they're not willing to give us any more space than cars and will cut us off as quickly as cars). I hear your comment about you noticing bikes coming up from your rear, when in a cage. I do, too. I'd pose the question, Do you (me, other bikers) notice bikes because we're bikers ourselves and are keenly tuned in to the sight and sound of bikes? Some drivers are simply assholes. The other day, my wife an I were on the Ultra on the Interstate. A car was coming from several lanes over, to make a quick exit. I slowed down, and got on my loud horn (Denali Sound Bomb). The car kept up its relentless pass to make the exit, actually forcing me onto the shoulder. No amount of noise mattered to that idiot driver. The F'er saw me, but just didn't care. Stay vigilant to stay alive.
You bring up some great points! It’s true that being visible and staying out of blind spots are crucial. Loud pipes can help, but ultimately, it often comes down to driver awareness and consideration. Staying vigilant is key, especially with those reckless drivers out there! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
I live in farm country...tons of deer. The deer definitely hear loud pipes better than quiet
Absolutely! Loud pipes can really help alert both drivers and wildlife. It's especially important in areas with so many deer around! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
i do not believe loud pipes save lives because 75% of the bikes in accidents where i live have loud pipes. getting your skills up and taking your safety into your own hands is what will save you. at speed modern cars are insulated well enough that they cannot hear you anyway especially if they have the music up
That’s a valid perspective! While loud pipes can help in some situations, rider skills and awareness are definitely crucial for safety. It’s all about finding a balance and doing what works best for each rider.. Regardless, many riders enjoy the sound of loud pipes for the experience, and they can certainly add to a bike's presence on the road. Anything you can do to let others know you are there is another way to increase your safety. Thank you for commenting! MB
Well said.
It isn’t an either or. Both of these are beneficial. This argument would be like does driver skill or proper lighting make a difference in a car. I think the point is made with the advent of electric cars and the discussion that they need to emit noise so people know there is a moving vehicle out there. We should be triggering as many senses of the other drivers as we can when we ride.
You may hear loud pipes approaching from behind, but if the bike is over-taking you by 30 or 40 mph, he’ll probably be past you before you realize it. The only thing that saves lives imo is that space between your ears, if it is indeed occupied.
That's a good point! Awareness and anticipation are key when riding or driving. It’s all about being alert and understanding the dynamics of the road. Every little bit of caution can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe even being heard! Thank you for commenting! MB
They damn sure will let the idiots in cages know yre in the area. After 47 yrs of experience with LOUD pipes on my different scooters I feel better with LOUD pipes. I do recommend louder pipe to the younger generation of riders.
Ride safe my brothers and sisters.🇺🇸😎
Absolutely! Your experience speaks volumes, and it's great to hear you’re passing that advice to younger riders. Loud pipes can really help with visibility and safety. Ride safe and enjoy the journey! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Agree, but I prefer a semi loud pipe because I don’t like the noise on long rides…
That makes sense! A semi loud pipe strikes a good balance. You still get that nice sound without it being overwhelming on long rides. Thanks for commenting! MB
Agreed… it helps but not necessary as everyone who preaches it claims. I commute/lane split daily on either my 300cc scooter or my 117 Fxlrs, no difference from a safety perspective. Sure the fxlrs will some have cars veering slightly to make space but honestly I rather they keep their vehicles straight and steady; not necessary. In the end , again, sure every bit helps but don’t be fooled.
That’s a valid point! Every rider has different experiences, and it’s great to hear your perspective on commuting. Staying steady and aware is key, regardless of the bike. Thanks for sharing your insights! Thank you for commenting! 👍😎 MB
I'd say so it's has been my experience. My bikes have all had loud pipes on them. Now, when you are riding in an area that has fog, an area that has low visibility from trees, if you ride in the mountains, an area that has switchbacks or even late night on the highway it definitely keeps you safe, now here is a question: should electric vehicles have a noise maker everyone else can hear? People drive badly enough these days, and when you can not hear them coming or going, it can get dangerous for motorcycles. And sooner or later, someone is going to get by a quiet electric vehicle while on a motorcycle because they don't hear them coming when that electric vehicle decides to run a stop sign or stop light, or when it decides to pass on the wrong side of the road. And sure, those cars come with special features to prevent some of that, however everyone like to mod their vehicles how long until the safety systems are hacked when someone is turning up their electric car for more torque and horsepower? There needs to be a minimum decibel noise in all vehicles. I've been riding for 40 years and loud pipes have saved my life on numerous occasions. Along with transmission braking.
Great points! Loud pipes do enhance safety, especially in low visibility conditions. As for electric vehicles, adding noise could definitely help make them more noticeable. It’s all about keeping everyone safe on the road! Thank you for commenting! MB
Will Dk come out with trading cards for the wheels of the dam electric harlys? Asking for a friend...😊
@@davidnadeau6441 I was implying that sooner or later those electric vehicles are going to start hurting motorcycle riders, even the experienced ones. And the loud pipes could help stop it. Until their own factoies start installing fake engine noises to the electric vehicle market with a minimum decibel level so we could here them.
I agree that all vehicles should make noise! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
"Loud Pipes Save Lives" is another way of saying "I don't understand physics" or "I don't understand basic acoustics". The pipes are facing in the wrong direction acoustically. Simple as that. In order for someone to hear your loud pipes in front of you, the sound must reflect off something behind you. Sound does travel faster than a motorcycle, so that works to your advantage. The sound also decreases significantly with distance. (In your video, notice that the motorcycle is significantly quieter, until the motorcycle passes the camera person.) Add to that how cars are acoustically dampened inside, and this gets even worse. Another example, check out sirens on emergency vehicle. They face forward. The sound travels in the direction that the speaker points in. All that being said, I like the sound of loud pipes. I have some Bassani Road Rage 2 into 1's on my Fat Boy. I am under no illusions that these are making anything safe.
Great Points!!! Loud pipes are not a magic pill...they are just one of many tools in the tool box. It’s true that sound dynamics play a big role in safety. Regardless, many riders enjoy the sound of loud pipes for the experience, and they can certainly add to a bike's presence on the road. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for commenting! MB
Rode buddy's Honda F6B... didn't like that stealthy quite feeling riding next to cars.
I get that! Some riders prefer the assurance of being heard. It can definitely feel different being on a quieter bike next to traffic! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
Greens, and foooooools so not true, but they saved me many times !! Question who did the reports, and for the real reason !
Safety can be subjective, and everyone has their own experiences. It’s always worth discussing the different perspectives on motorcycle safety and awareness. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😎 MB
I run a custom exhaust that is tuned to the motor all I can say is I get more people's attention by pulling in the clutch and rapping the throttle than I do by using my horn. Guess I need one of those train horns everybody is talking about ?
Sounds like you’ve got a great setup! Custom exhausts really do make a difference in getting attention. A train horn would definitely turn heads even more-talk about making an entrance! 😂 Thank you for commenting! MB
Studies found........how do they count things that didn't happen?
I had a bike with loud pipes and one with stock pipes, cars did NOT pull out in front of me when riding loud pipes, but when on the stock pipes someone pulled out in front of me at least once per ride
On the stock pipes I added some very bright running/passing lights and it dramaticly reduced the occurrence of people "not seeing" me, but still more often than loud pipes bike
Currently I have 4 Harley 1 Kawasaki, all stock pipes, 1 Harley has LED turn signals and stock headlight w/fast flash switch, 1 has both LED, 2 have LED headlights stock turn signals...... Kawasaki has stock LED's, headlight with fast flash switch....turn signals are too small
On occasion on all my bikes there is someone that just doesn't look, for these loud pipes would help......but I can't sit on top of loud pipes, 1/2hr and my ears are ringing, I can ride behind loud pipes with no problem
Here's the thing, it's all about controlling somebody, they go after motorcycle with loud pipes but don't care a bit about trucks with loud pipes, because the trucks would be an impossible fight for them but motorcycle population is less
Example my wife and I are stuck in traffic, we're stopped under a 4 lane bridge, 2 loud pipes motorcycles coming towards us, before they get there she starts complaining about the loud pipes.......3 miles down the road we're sitting waiting for the left turn light, truck with stove pipe sticking up from bed comes buy revving diesel engine, makes her stop talking because she couldn't hear herself thinking, had to roll up the window because of the black smoke everywhere.......not a word about loud trucks, even though that truck was twice as loud as the 2 motorcycles
You raise some excellent points! It’s interesting how personal experience can differ from studies. Loud pipes can definitely create awareness, but it’s all about finding a balance that works for each rider and respecting those around us. It’s frustrating when it feels like there’s a double standard with noise regulations! Thank you for sharing and for commenting! 👍MB
Kevin - do an assessment of aftermarket horns, please.
I want to get rid of the ridiculous mouse mobile road runner stock horn. It's near worthless.
I will pass this idea along to Kevin. Thank you for the idea and for commenting! 😎 MB
most cagers are windows up AC blasting & phone or radio Blasting but yes my bikes loud & iam lit up with all leds
Exactly! With so many distractions in cars, being loud and visible is key. It sounds like you’re doing everything right to stay safe on the road! Thank you for commenting! MB

Lights and loud pipes get noticed. That’s gotta be safer…
That's true! Visibility and sound can definitely help alert others. Thank you for commenting! MB

I agree! Anything that raises awareness is another layer of safety! Thank you for commenting! MB
Both
They are noisy, but they can certainly raise awareness on the road! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I know from experience it has helped me having my bike louder than what manufacturers send out the door. If ya stand outside when a bike is coming you can hear the one with louder piles before you could hear the factory one. Its not rocket science.
Exactly! It's pretty clear that louder pipes can increase visibility and awareness. Simple changes like that can make a big difference, especially in traffic. Experience speaks for itself! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Dozens and dozens of times in my truck I have heard Harley’s in my blind spots next to the left and right rear fenders, when I could not see them. Several times I was starting to change lanes when I heard the bike before I saw saw it. The studies that say loud pipes don’t make a difference are just BS.
That’s a great example! Personal experiences like yours really highlight how loud pipes can help increase awareness. It’s frustrating when studies don’t take those real-life situations into account! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Come on people…Bright Lights…Neon Colors (ugh!)…Loud Pipes…anything that will bring attention to your presence WILL Save your Bacon…to say otherwise is idiotic!!! Love my Short Shots on my Harley and my neighbor says she loves to hear me start my bike everyday (for work) She says it’s music to her…guess she heard my loud pipes without even seeing me!?!
Exactly! It's all about being seen and heard on the road. Glad to hear your neighbor enjoys your bike too! Thank you for commenting! MB
All i know is a woman with her window half way down talking on a cell phone still tried to come over into my lane :-( and ne with straigh pipes right in her ear. At the next light she said " sorry i didnt see you" naturally i responded with " its my fault i didnt realize you were driving while blind and deaf " :-)
ROFLMAO! Glad you avoided that one with your defensive riding. Great response!
KP
@DKCustomProducts yup I had to use the turn lane to get away from her :-) of I had know she was so severely handicapped I wouldn't have passed her :-)
lol I am glad that you were able to avoid that accident! Thank you for sharing! 😎 MB
I’m not sure how loud pipes will help out with 4 wheelers turning in front of you. Physics would say that oncoming traffic won’t hear any noise. I prefer bright LED’s out front. Now if the bike/trike coming up from behind I could see the loud pipes would be noticeable. Just like emergency vehicles with sirens are louder coming from behind you rather than in front coming at you. Great convo to have though👍
Yes absolutely, I have experienced the loader pipes helping me several times. When people hear and feel the rumble when we’re near them and it at least wakes up most people just not all those in a cage….so, best most hear anyhow.. thanks Kevin👍
While it's true that not everyone will hear a bike approaching, I find that when I'm driving a car, I can usually hear motorcycles coming up behind me. The louder the bike, the more likely it is that others will notice it. It's all about raising awareness on the road! I also believe in See and Be Seen. Bright lights will help you be seen and can save your life as well. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I drive a tractor trailer, with the windows up I can't always hear a bike until they are almost next to me
Loud pipes are not a magic pill...they are just one of may tools in the tool box. As a rule, I find semi drivers more aware (mirrors) than most 4 wheelers. Yes, I know there are exceptions.
KP
@@DKCustomProducts yes, we are constantly looking in the mirror, cagers just move if they don't see anything

Video proof after my Stealth exhaust install that loud pipes work- ua-cam.com/users/shortsRwu3lwkQ2Uc
She heard me coming down the ramp, from behind, while she was doing 70mph in an SUV with all the windows closed.
That’s impressive! It’s great to hear firsthand how effective the Stealth exhaust is at increasing awareness on the road. Safety features like that can really make a difference! Thank you for commenting! 👍MB
to me its the pipes that play my music.and i like it loud.
That's a fun way to look at it! Loud pipes definitely have their own unique sound. Thank you for commenting! MB
I have vh longshots that are plenty loud and get noticed plenty. When I’m in my truck with the windows rolled up I’ve had the sh scared out of me by super quiet or electric motorcycles, scooters🤦♂️
Haha, I can relate! Those quiet bikes can really sneak up on you. Loud pipes definitely have their perks for awareness on the road! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
@@DKCustomProducts loud pipes save lives🤘
Right On!!! Ride Safe Ride Free! 🤘 MB
We hear bikes up to 3 miles from the farm. Loud is one thing but many, many people take this to excess. Then, the stereo has to be louder than the bike, right? Sometimes 5 miles away. All you are doing then is pissing me off. To scare deer? Deer are stupid and will go out into the street regardless of noise, or bright lights. I ride, too, but there is a limit. Maybe pay more attention. You don't own the road. Be safe and courteous. Always be ready to stop.
I understand your perspective, and it’s important to find a balance. Being safe and courteous on the road benefits everyone! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
I don’t think my neighbors like me because of my neighbor haters.
Loud pipes aren't for everybody, but being heard is another tool in your safety belt. Thank you for commenting! MB
No only you can save your life through defensive driving
You're absolutely right, defensive driving is key to staying safe on the road. It's all about being aware, anticipating potential hazards, and reacting accordingly. It's up to us as riders to stay alert and make smart decisions to protect ourselves. Having loud pipes can be another layer of awareness for others. Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
Who cares, they sound good and fun!
Exactly! At the end of the day, riding should be enjoyable, and a good sound definitely adds to the fun! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
If they can't see me then they will hear me
Yes, let's hope they do not have their stereo to loud. Loud pipes are definitely a useful tool in the tool kit of riding defensively.

Maybe just noise or maybe not, but if u ride past an idiot driving in his car and on his phone , what is better a loud harley or a clown in his car on his mobile.
Good point! A loud Harley can definitely cut through distractions better than a clueless driver on their phone. It's all about staying safe amidst the chaos! Thank you for commenting! 👍 MB
There are dozens of variables in any and every fatality incident. Any opinion on this is purely anecdotal. If you feel safer with loud pipes, install them. If they annoy you, don’t.
That’s a fair point! It’s definitely a personal choice, and everyone has different experiences, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have all possibilities of being noticed. Thanks for sharing your perspective! MB
EV cars are dangerous in town with people walking , so how many times when you come up to a vehicle and you see them looking for a bike . Now the problem is how load ??? some of them are crazy load . My pipes have save me riding in towns many times.
You make a good point! EVs are so quiet, they can be harder to spot, especially in busy areas. Loud pipes can definitely help alert drivers and pedestrians, but it’s important to find a balance so we’re heard without being overwhelming. Glad to hear your pipes have helped keep you safe! Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB
My pipes are very loud and music to my soul. If people are annoyed by the sound of my pipes then they know I am there. I will use my pipes before I use my horn because my hands are already in the position to rev them. Just my $.25😎🇺🇸
I love that enthusiasm! Loud pipes definitely have a way of making their presence known. It’s all about the joy of riding and expressing yourself. Keep enjoying that music to your soul! 😎Thank you for commenting! MB
I don't believe that pound pipes save lives, that's a myth. We don't hear the police sirens when they come behind us, even more so an army jet we see after they pass due to the noise. Often in the car you cannot hear the motorcycle when it is heard while driving. We hear it in the traffic. The wind blows the noise backwards, not forwards. I have mufflers that make noise, I have mufflers that are silent and I don't see any difference in the behavior of motorists near me, I must always be very careful. THANKS
Vigilance is always a must any time you are riding or driving. It is not really a myth that being louder can be another tool in your box to help others know you are there. I often drive a cage because I take my kids to school or pick up groceries and I can say that I have heard bikes coming up behind me before I have seen them. Thank you for commenting! MB
No.
Thanks for your comment! Loud pipes serve as an extra layer of safety for many riders. MB
Dumbest phrase ever coming from the biking community. I think it’s to sell t-shirts. Road King rider with Tab Performance Zombie baffles. When I am driving my car with the radio on I am always conscious of my fellow biker brothers and sisters and I can tell you I always see them before hearing them. Just think how long it takes to hear a siren for an emergency vehicle where it is and where it’s coming from or going.
I often drive a cage because I take my kids to school or pick up groceries and I can say that I have heard bikes coming up behind me before I have seen them. This can be a controversial subject and we understand that, but being loud is certainly one extra way to let people know you are around. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for commenting! MB
Who’s got the loudest pipes
I do not know for sure but I think Kevin's bike might be louder than Devin's. Thanks for commenting! 👍MB
@@DKCustomProducts so what do they have? I had a set of DND with a big bore baffle two into one. I took out the tube around the baffle. It didn’t have no wrap so I had to cut the tube out and that thing was ferocious. I’m debating on putting it on a 2024 CVO ST on the other hand I was thinking of chrome marks with the burnt chrome and going inside there and taking everything out of there and just leaving the baffle in there no packing no nothing see if it has that deep ferocious sound that D&D had

What are the loudest pipes for a road glide aka touring
I had D&D 2:1 big bore baffle on my 2018 and had the cylinder cut from around the baffle not a single bit of insulation was wrapped about it just a steel cylinder sleeve was welded around the baffle cut it off, took it off and boy was that thing dark and ominous and loud rumble
