Stock Harleys are fast enough to do what the bikes are designed for--good handling, large cruiser bikes. To me, the cost for getting a little more power far exceeds the benefits. I always have found stock Harleys fast enough for me. Just sayin'.

Not too many S/E parts in bikes that are running in my circles down here in New Zealand. We tend to squeeze the best out of what we have mainly because we're ingenious, we're at the bottom of the globe (making shipping expensive), our gas is crap and our dollar only buys about 60c US. Mainly... it's a cam change, intake, exhaust and tune but you do get the occasional situation where the owner goes all out but it's rare. For my bike (a mild-mannered 2007 W/g) I managed to obtain a new 103ci kit for a good price (old stock) and, as an engine builder by trade, did everything myself except the tune-up. I pocket ported the heads, did a multi-angle valve job, took a lick off the heads, used thinner Cometic head gaskets, fitted decompression valves, slipped in some Andrews cams then took it to the dyno for the final tune. It runs great, overtakes with ease (with a 30/70 final drive pulleys) and is well suited to our twisty, lumpy 3rd world roads. (Ohlins are a must in this country.) Screaming Eagle? Who needs it? We have Clever Kiwi.

Even before the EPA got so absurd, SE parts were less desirable in my opinion. The typical scenario used to be, customer buys new bike then realizes it doesn't really look like or perform like they thought it would. Customer hits one of the forums and asks advice about how to get better performance. Customer gets solid advice about what aftermarket parts and what mods to do to get the performance customer should have gotten from the factory. Customer then balks at aftermarket parts because customer doesn't want to void his factory warranty.
So customer ultimately buys SE parts and, for a while enjoys the new performance improvement. Customer quickly realizes that his expensive dealer installed SE parts aren't resulting in the performance he was expecting and he is still getting regular ass kickings by his buddy's bike(s). Customer then goes back to forums and wonders about a different cam, or different tuner (my personal favorite), or different exhaust, etc, etc. Customer once again is given solid advice by other forum members.
Customer then realizes warranty is almost up and so takes another expensive plunge, this time heeding the advice of those on the forum(s) who had tried to advise him.....twice, and pays more money for the recommended aftermarket parts and independent shop installation and tune.Customer posts a much improved dyno sheet on the forum(s) and posts that he is now finally happy with the performance and never posts on the forum(s) again.

99.999 % of all cars on the road are stock engines. The stock Harley runs fine and fast enough. You don't need to get caught up in the speed game. It's costly and usually not as dependable as stock. People have been traveling America with Harley long before 1949 Hydra glide but that bike made it real comfortable. The Hydra glide made about 55HP and it was enough for 2 up and travel in America.

My first Harley was an ‘03 Dyna Low Rider with an 88ci TC. I thought there was something wrong with the engine. It was a dog. Then I was told I have to do a ‘Stage 1”. Welcome to the world of upgrades. Not satisfied, as the guy I rode with would always leave me in the dust, I found out he did a cam swap. Did that and the bike not only ran right, but rode better. It was all HD parts. Then I found out about the world of aftermarket parts. What a rabbit hole. As I’ve mentioned before, my ‘14 SGS is a perfect blend. Stock frame, gas tank, rims, barrels and pistons. Everything else swapped out. The Woods 222 is my favorite swap along with the heads. Never miss a chance to put the numbers up: 103hp and 116ft/lbs of torques. ❤ Next is the front and rear suspension. I admit, I love doing the customizing on the bike. Definitely made it my own. Another great video! Thanks.

I have never, EVER put any bike into a dealership for anything. I do my own work. It's not like Harley engines are super complicated. My experience with a specific SE part turned almost disastrous. I bought SE rocker arm supports thinking they were more durable and compatible with a new ‘98 big bore kit from FuelMoto. Long story short, after a $1500 U-Haul rental to get my bike home, from Couer d’Alain Idaho to Alberta (Canada), I disassembled the bike and found the rear rocker arm support cracked in three places on the push rod side. The only difference between stock and SE is that the SE support is reinforced on the value side. The pushrod side on the SE is no different from stock. The SE support is made from porous pot metal. I would be ashamed to stamp SE on a poorly designed part like that if I was Harley. Be very cautious when buying Harley SE parts, with the assumption they are better. This experience caused me a lot of grief and stress, not to mention a big drain on my bank account.

I think you are 100% correct. I’ve stayed with HD parts so as not to void my extended warranty. I’ve bought the warranty on 3 bikes and had to use it on each, in each case the warranty coverage pretty much matched what I had paid for it. Sad but true! I fully agree a woods cam will meet or exceed the bump you get from most any stage kit, but that would void the warranty!

The 103ci had bad blow by and dumped all the oil so it was covered by my extended warranty...
So I just had to pay out of pocket for the upgrades... $2,300 ?
Then I bought a 5 year extended warranty to cover the screaming eagle parts...
Noticeably more power and a little louder, and a slight loss in gas mileage/range on a full tank...
The only downside was the 80 something days waiting on the cylinders...

When they do a big bore kit, cams, heads, or whatever, they are not comparing it to a Hayabusa. They are comparing it to what they had before they made any changes to it. 2023 fltrxst. 117.
    Rock stock..
Going to keep it that way as it has more than enough power for the chassis.
If I gave in and did a tuner and slip ons I would be at stage 2 as it already has the snorkle and bigger cam.
But nope stage 1.5 is fine and being a true air/oil engine it runs soft and low anyway.
Put a hard 3500 rpm limit on the top and do most work from 2000 to 3000.
Heck, the darn thing will pull at 1800 and has sweet spots at 2400, 2600, 2800, and finally 3200 for the high cruise.
Mine is quieter while still thumping as well.
Also, dealer installs can have warranty issues after a year.
I enjoy my road sofa and enjoy the proper shock height for good cornering..
Nice bike when in its happy place.

I ride a 2020 RGL with the 114 M8, that has all the power I need. I have no interest in any SE or aftermarket parts. Never go pass 4K rpm on the engine anyway. Know a lot of people who have mods to the engine and wish they never did. Worse fuel mileage, mechanical issues, and drivability. I'm glad HD doesn't put those parts on straight from the factory.

  • @williamwintemberg

Here's one of my problems with HD. You buy the bike and add a stage 4. You have almost bought the bike twice, depending on model. Then comes the reliability goodies that are must haves. HD has been doing this for years and devoted customers go for it. If, say if another manufacturer did this, their showrooms would be empty. Devoted HD owners applaud it. What???? I don't even want to think about how much one could spend if they took the modifications one stage at a time. It all gives a new meaning to HD giving you a little more.
For those that need to know, I'm an HD owner. Just saying.

For the cost of installing a stage 4/5, you can buy a used rocket 3 and have 2 bikes, or a fishing boat.
Stage 4 = $3850/kit or $8k for a crate motor then you have to add labor- my closest shop is $185/hr.

When I changed my pipes from stock. I ordered them online did that myself along with a fully programmable Dynojet Power Commander. Rather tgan get scammed by Harley for pipes and a flash... the cost of the download was almost 400 bucks... the power commander was the same price... then I had programmable fuel management to this day.
Only thing I need to do now is true duals with oxy bungs and a new fuel management computer to take advantage of that.

Awesome tuner, I'm running 13.8 fuel ratio through the entire RPM range, not good mileage, but runs real cool and has tons of power, A 2002 twin cam 88 bumped up to a 95, turning out 106 HP and 107 ft lb tq, its one bad little 95. H-D outsources a lot of stuff from the aftermarket manufacturers, it's just got their packaging & logo. And warranty.
H-D does kinda stick it to the actual manufacturers. They must sign a confidentiality agreement, and not let it be known who makes what. That last until the next trade show party!

I appreciate your video on this subject. When you think about it after purchasing all these Screamin Eagle products to make your bike more powerful you’re exactly right in that it’s probably cheaper to buy a whole new engine. I have a 2010 Dyna Wide Glide and although I would like to have more power from my TC 96 I can’t really justify the cost. To me it’s more important to spend the money on suspension and a comfortable seat to make it ride better. Yeah my stock TC isn’t going to win many races but it has enough power to get a speeding ticket.

I had plans of going to 98 cid with cams, a billet cam plate, and high volume oil pump but after installing the K&N air cleaner and doing the PV4 tune I’m happy with what I’ve got. It saves me a lot of work and a couple of grand while making the bike much enjoyable to ride. If I were going to do any of the mods I mentioned previously I’m sure that they wouldn’t come from Screamin’ Eagle. My next mod to my Wide Glide needs to be tires, how about opening that can of worms Foo? Currently I’m looking at Metzler Cruisetec and Michelin Scorchers which are claimed to be used by HD from the factory now. My factory Dunlops made it 16k and performed adequately but I’m looking for a smoother ride and better handling if I can get it. Those would be my primary considerations for new tires with longevity being secondary.

Preferring Corvette-like performance & sporty style over Cadillac-like comfort & traditional style; I bought a 2017 V-ROD Muscle that year instead (it's punched-out with WAY more power than I need in a Cruiser).
Honestly, if extreme hp is a must when buying a Cruiser; buying a 2nd Generation Yamaha VMAX or Triumph Rocket 3 makes more sense because you can tweak more power from those machines for less money, and they won't overheat (and with OHCs they rev higher without valve-float or blowing up).
But to each his own. Like the Hodge Twins used to say; "It's your life. Do whatever the $#@&! you want to".

I love it when I see Sportsters listed on Marketplace as a "2005 Harley Screaming Eagle" because it has the "Screaming Eagle" air filter.

I would LOVE for you to do a 2024 tuner update video, specifically highlighting ThunderMax

To me, a minimum of Stage 1 is a must. Not for performance but for temperature and ridability.

What tuner do you recommend for an M-8 to get a better fuel mixture; not so lean??

One reason to trust the dealership and to use Screaming Eagle parts, at least for those Stage upgrades, is that the warranty is not voided if the dealer installs them. You can say that’s part of the scam, but it’s definitely not meaningless if you’re upgrading a brand new bike.
