Conditions matter. This is why we can’t just “race on paper”. Notice how *both* cars were so much slower in the second race due to declining track prep. Can this Sapphire run 9.0s or 8.90s? Not under these conditions. Yet with similar width tires (all OEM on both cars) and similar battery states of charge, the Plaid was able to more reliably put the power down 👍
You ran a 9.2 so he should've at least ran a 9.0. He wasn't even close to that. Even with perfect conditions, I dont think he could've done a 9.2. Something is up with that Sapphire or it's all hype. Great job as always. You're getting better with the pro tree 😃
You can buy a model s plaid, model x plaid for the wife, and model 3 performance for the weekend and still have money leftover for the price of the Lucid. Crazy to put that in perspective.
Well u get what u pay for. Tesla has no luxury or anything to make it feel like ur in something special or expensive. It's just dull and plain jane. The exterior isnt head turning or a WOW factor. Looks like basic traffic. It has alot of low grade and plastic parts. Theres a reason it's cheap and keeps depreciating. Also in this video the lucid only lost cuz he didn't have the right modes on.. as he even said in the vid he just got the car. The plaid owner said at the end he fixed his tire pressure and in the comments said he super charged his car after every run and the lucid didn't. The guy didn't know what he was doing yet.
Marketing can be a evil and deceptive tool. In the REAL world, conditions aren't perfect all the time. You would think something that obvious wouldn't need to be repeated but love it when REAL life brings you back to reality with a nice kick in the arse
@@cubozoan9448it is stock. He took a "little" bit of weight out of it. It would of made no difference in how the races turned out. This is the first appearance of a Sapphire in any sort of performance face off that wasn't staged by the company. Looks like Lucid's performance claims were seriously overblown.
They were souped up or maxed out prototypes for journalists. Tesla has the best EV tech. They didn't come out with the 1100hp S+ models because the 18650 batteries would not be reliable long term. From what I’ve seen I admire that Lucid has come so far considering they’re a competitor of the best company in the world. I know the Lucid can outperform the plaid from multiple other videos when it comes to 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile runs, but boy was that thing struggling on those 3 runs. Still prefer the plaid considering the price tag and the fact it’s TESLA❤ But best of luck to Lucid in becoming a thriving EV automaker with a high quality and high performance vehicle👍

“Multiple other videos”???!! No there isn’t lol. Not real world heads up racing videos like this one. You’re talking about edited and heavily influenced (aka fake) promotional videos in favor of Lucid. This is the only heads up real world race video between the two cars so far on the internet. And the Plaid gapped the Sapphire on 3 straight runs quite handily. The actual production models of the Sapphire are slower than the prototype Sapphire from the Hagerty video.

Both beautiful vehicles! 🤩 I never would have thought that EVs would become this size, power and capabilities 30 to 20 years ago when the EV1 and other EVs started to hit the road. Amazing machines.
Drivers make a difference, great launch, congratulations, thought you had met your match, and you rose to the occasion and tree'd him each time for the win!
Indeed, the driver is an key part of the equation. Not just for the controls, but also for reading the track to find traction. We appreciate the kind words. 👍
I'm not sure about it being any of those things considering Tesla as a company and its track record. However, I can definitely say that the Sapphire is slower in these videos and from the looks of it, I think that Lucid has some more work to do on the launch control technology.
Thanks! We’re trying to be consistent but staging depth is a challenge since the Plaid often “surges” while entering the beams. And then we can’t leave when we want to (unless we are perfectly shallow), otherwise we risk a red. Last night was better: 0.029, 0.019, and 0.019 again. Not too bad for a two-pedal foot brake launch 😃
Great runs, haven't seen one of these in the wild yet but when you can buy 2.5 Tesla Plaids for the cost of 1 Sapphire they are bound to be more rare. I like that there are options though for really fast electric sedans.
Power-to-weight Ratios! Sapphire: 4.29 lbs/HP (5300/1234) THIS Plaid: 4.51 lbs/HP (4775 - 170 lbs removed; 4605/1020) Why do the Lucid fans keep talking about the 170 pounds removed from the Plaid instead of the above? Seems pretty disingenuous to us 🤔 The Sapphire STILL has a significantly better power to weight ratio! (Even after 170 lbs removed from the Plaid)
Note: Lucid’s web site lists all other dimensions except for weight. This Sapphire owner said “about 5300”. Wikipedia lists: 5,203-5,236 lbs (if correct, then the power-to-weight ratio for the Sapphire is even better!)
Well you know what that is about. Immature losers come up with ANY excuse they can find. In contrast, when you lose a race, you either site something you did or didn’t do or the other car is just faster. That is a mature response.
Seems like everyone but Tesla chooses the "bigger battery is better" route to power. Clearly that has limitations. Chevy might be the poster child for stupidly huge batteries, but it appears Lucid could not resist either.
Lucid's bigger battery is also good for a lot more range, and it is actu as efficient as the Tesla, unlike pretty much every other EV out there. The extra battery isn't a bad choice in this case.
Just rewatched the Jason's (Cammisa and EE) Sapphire video and they said that for the Hagerty video with the Plaid, Lucid engineers dialed in the software until the Sapphire beat the Plaid for the specific road conditions for that day. I think their production traction management calibration needs more work given the results shown in this video. It is amazing that Andrew is using 2.5 year old stock tires. Those 19" PZeros are very robust.
Andrew you make the best Tesla racing vids online. Watching you helped make my decision to purchase a 2023 plaid with the standard tempest wheels. Been waiting on some real world experiences of the Plaid vs Sapphire. Video did not disappoint! I am curious if you see the weight savings of upgrading to a 19 in forged rim to cut some rotational mass and shedding a few pounds being worth it? I know some TS115'S would look good but what are your thoughts? Keep up the good work on the vids! Thumbs up as always
Glad I could help! Aftermarket 19” wheels can only help by a few hundredths at most. Tesla’s OEM 19”s are not all that heavy. If ETs are the only consideration, then the way to go is smaller. Like 18”x8.5” front and 18”x9.5” rear. The smaller diameter pays off in moment of inertia and gives far more tire choices. I’ve talked to guys about making these custom, but the bang for the buck just wasn’t there. And since I seem to go through brake pads quickly (every 450 runs), I don’t want to modify the banjo bolt to fit 18”s and then lose warranty coverage in that area 👍
Great races. You were great at the tree as usual. I wonder if the LUCID pre-conditions the batttery for drag racing like the Plaid does. Without heating the battery, it's very possible that the LUCID did not get it's full HP potential. A cold battery can't discharges as fast as a hot one.. Just a thought.
👍 Interesting theory. I asked the first driver about that and he said he had it in the top race mode for awhile before our first race (including those 2 test passes: 9.33 and 9.45), so I would think it should have gotten warmed up. Just like I had to with the Plaid before my first run, it said "10 minutes" til Peak Performance so I went to the far corner of the empty pit area and gave it some quick bursts of power to get it warmed up faster. (The Lucid's two FULL test passes would have done much more, I never got the Plaid over 60 MPH)
Seems the Saphire may have better peak performance, but the Plaid has more consistency, judging from the few non-marketing - ie real life - videos. Close races, but can't deny that it makes the Plaid look like a steal at $90k.
I've seen a Lucid Sapphire run a 1.42 60' with a 8.94 @ 153mph. So with a 9.3 run and a 1.67 60', that car is on track for an 8.9 in ideal conditions. I know people are focusing on the pure drag race numbers for the $250k price tag, but they likely aren't considering that it's also a Mercedes S-class tier interior on top of that performance. It's a truly remarkable car, and very beautiful to see. You being gutted and cutting incredible reaction times really put a gap on the Lucid, congrats! You may have more trouble in the summer months doing that.
@@TB-vb3ov just using his own words. Removing all your extra seats and 90% of your interior is considered gutted. You're arguing semantics at this point and I'm guessing @TeslaPlaidChannel would agree.
@@scottc78 No I doubt he would agree with what you said about his Tesla being gutted. It has some wright reduction sure but not gutted dude. There is still a significant more weight reduction he could do do get into 8s consistently.
“But doesn’t the Plaid already have enough motor to run 1200HP? Isn’t it limited by software due to safety margins?” (Heat, warranty claims, etc) Sometimes more power than tire means getting down the track slower. (Ask any Hellcat owner on stock tires.) It’s not like Tesla is going to ship cars with drag radials. Considering we are running the original OEM Pirelli summer tires (still not replaced after about 850 runs), getting down THIS track in THESE conditions in 9.26 seconds is about as much as anyone can ask for. Sure, there could be a bit more power on the top end, but there are new NHRA Rules starting Jan 1st: a HANS device is now required over 150MPH. With no easy way to set that up on a stock seat with a stock 3-point seatbelt, I’m fine running 149.x every pass (with good conditions).
Even compared to a gutted Plaid with a better drag driver, the Sapphire is clearly a much faster car than the Plaid, but it is interesting to see how it struggled so much more with traction. I hope we see more of the Sapphire up against another Plaid that’s bone stock for a truer comparo. First of its kind content, thanks!
Wow you are one hell of a dragster with the plaid. Hats off for great driving even in crappy conditions. Both cars are incredible. But I will always choose the Plaid. Best value for the money you can buy!
Congrats for destroying the Lucid, I am thinking seriously about the purchase of a new or used low mileage plaid. Have a question for you, When highway driving are there any restrictions with the computer taking over and reducing speed when significantly over the posted speed limits?
Thanks! As for the Plaid reducing speed automatically: Not at all, unless the driver has intentionally turned on one of the autopilot or FSD modes, which we very rarely ever use. (We've never paid for FSD, and would highly recommend renting it for a month to try out before buying it.)
I would have instantly returned my Plaid if that were the case. Just get one before 2026 where all cars are mandated to have a kill switch installed that the government controls.
Yet the math shows that even with full interior (+0.15 sec tops) and a 200 pound passenger (+0.2 sec), we still would have crossed the finish line first. (Closest margin was over 0.4 sec)
The Plaid is not “gutted”. Pulling the back seats and some soundproofing from the back half of the car does not qualify as gutting. It’s mostly considered weight savings.
Given the trap speed when the Lucid was at a higher SOC, I’d say it’s a quicker/faster car but VERY MARGINALLY! From a dig though, it clearly isn’t putting the power down and Plaid is a better ET car, ie, better car at the drag strip! Looks like that Sapphire just can’t put the power down like the Plaid, so I’d say 9 times out of 10 the Plaid is most definitely a Sapphire killer! Impressive considering the price delta-you can almost buy 3 Plaids for the price of that Lucid! 😂
Unless you bought a Plaid new or any Tesla! The you find yourself underwater within a few months due to price cuts! Profit at lower margins at the detriment of your most LOYAL customers is not a recipe for future success
@@Dou6.2 well if you currently buy a Plaid you can be sure you’re secure at an entry price of only $90k! Where as Lucid may not even be around in a few years with their current market trajectory…….🤣🤣

Lucid traps 156 on a good track. That was not a good track. Lesser hp will win almost every time on a less than stellar track prep. Plus different sizes wheels. Good for him but this doesn't prove that a Tesla is faster. It proves that the driver and that exact car was faster on that might. Yup a poor mans quick car. One trick poney for average Joe's that have never experienced a quick car. Too bad ur lacking the head turning dope exterior, special feeling and expensive luxury interior, and a unique dope head turning rumbling engine underneath u.
8.9s car can’t even do a consistent 9.2? Not the best conditions but the Plaid was laying down its advertised 1/4 mile time pretty closely. Even lane Swaps and the Lucid can’t run low 9’s? I don’t know man, I don’t know. Maybe they haven’t learned the car yet. 🤷♂️
Or maybe the car is not what is was advertised. Test mules and production ready cars are not the same. Real world and test environments are not the same. This was the FIRST production made Sapphire in a REAL WORLD environment. According to Lucid it should be be able to roll up to the line a pull a high 8 at 156mph. Sure the conditions weren’t right for that but that’s life. Everyday is not a perfect day and that Sapphire has some proving to do mainly match or exceed its marketing numbers in the REAL WORLD. I pretty sure it won’t succeed.
@@ChosenMJ It’s a big let down! It looks good, but I was never a fan of that $250K price because at that price I can buy a Plaid Model S and Plaid Model X which both has a glass roof and still have money left over. Even in perfect condition if that car never run a 9.2 or 9.0 they will regret buying that car.
I don't believe that I could have gotten that Sapphire down the track any faster (ET) under these conditions. With some time and tires, perhaps. But since the RT doesn't affect the ET anyway, my minor advantage on RT was inconsequential.
Please explain how 0.11 seconds of weight reduction caused GAPS OF 0.40 SECONDS and more? This Plaid has over 400 timeslips at full weight: 9.26 best, then more than 400 Timeslips with 170 pounds removed: 9.15 best. Even at full weight, no problem beating the Sapphire by more than 3 car lengths on this night
@TeslaPlaidChannel whoa calm down. Im sorry if it came across as if i was knocking you. That was not my intention. I thoroughly enjoyed this and wish you guys could have got better conditions to run them. Your Plaid stock has a curb weight of about 4800lbs while the Sapphire comes in a little above 5300lbs before drivers. The Sapphire barely edges your plaid out in drag coefficients with a .197 to your .208. It does theoretically have the torque advantage which is negated with the additional weight. These cars are pretty evenly matched on paper in stock form. In theory. The thing is there is one variable that is kind of understood amongst us SAEs familiar with some of Teslas' "tricks." Your Plaid stock.....is HIGHLY likely making more than its stated 1020hp 😉 Dont believe me? Well dont forget the Tesla Semi is using a (lightly modified for heavy duty usage) version of your rear Plaid motors pushing around 1050hp "on paper". I'd be willing to bet Lucid is sandbagging the Saphhires numbers too but haven't seen anything to back that up yet. So to your point yes IMO even without the 170lbs removed, your Plaid is faster which is why i said this wasn't fair LOL.. The 170lbs removed doesn't help the Sapphire driver (who also wasn't as quick on the tree as you) I'm a fan man not trying ruffle any feathers. These are two beautiful bad as cars.......that will have nothing on the next Rimac Nevera or Tesla Roadster coming. (There's a well known Italian brand that also has a dark horse coming that might surprise you).... 😉
Andrew, can you comment on the Sapphire's tire break-in? You said it had low miles on the odometer. At 443 miles, its likely the tire has not fully worn off the mold release and anti-oxidation coatings. This would negatively impact traction off the line, which is what we see here. Regardless, great racing! I look forward to seeing more from the Sapphire. Plaid FTW!
You are absolutely correct sir! That may indeed have been a factor. Only thing that’s strange is how much progressively worse it got with each run. Whereas the effect of any remaining coating on the tires should have been consistent, or getting slightly better. It reminded us of how Teslas used to have an issue with repeated runs due to thermal issues. The trap speed went from 152.3MPH on the first test pass down to 146 and 148 on the last two runs. Even tire spin wouldn’t cost that much MPH, as you’ll note that even with major spinning in the Plaid’s dirty lane, and losing HALF A SECOND in the 2nd race ET, the Plaid’s trap speed only dropped by 0.74 MPH. Less than ONE MPH. So something else seemed amiss with the Lucid.
Yep, we raced the exact same car 3 months earlier. And we did it on a regular track on a regular night. (Not pre-arranged with a private track rental that has unrealistic levels of prep.)
I want a Saphhire so much. And when I get one, I want it to become a wagon. It's been done to Model S by multiple designers, so why not? Especially excited for the reportedly amazing handling.
Nice kills. Tesla is just way quicker, she 60 foots way harder than the Lucid and by the 330 you’re already out on him and he doesn’t seem to reel you in at all on the big end despite the Lucid having more HP on paper, it can’t overcome the weight disadvantage.
The Sapphire beats the plaid by about 70 feet in the 1/4 mile every time. But the Sapphire has to be in Track mode, "Drag race." Looks like the old man driving the Plaid had it in Smooth mode.
@@jeffreyengen3134 only on paper and in a promotional video or a specially prepped Sapphire given to Hagerty… show me a real street racing video of a regular Joe with a Plaid racing a regular Joe with a Sapphire with the Lucid winning… This video by Tesla Plaid Channel is as real as it gets. 😂 In the real world the Plaid is still the King.
There are about 20 videos of regular joes and journalists running 9.2 1/4 mile times or better in the Sapphire. The Sapphire is in another league than the Plaid. It has a ton more power, much better CD, way more torque and the Sapphire always destroys the plaid by a lot. Except in this one video when the Sapphire is running at 9.6 1/4 mile .Why? Why only in this video is the Sapphire running such a poor time? It's not that the Plaid is running a great time. It's not. It's all about why the Sapphire is so slow in the video. Show me one video with a Plaid ever running even a 9.2 1/4 mile. which is slow for the Sapphire. This video is the slowest time ever by a Sapphire. And there was an extra passenger in the Sapphire with some old guy driving it. We have no idea of what mode he had it in. Also weight matters in drag racing. But even with the extra 200lbs, the Sapphire would not run that slow.@@speedracerjeff
PS. If the Plaid Was running a 9.0 1/4 mile I would say wow. That's almost as fast as the Sapphire. But it's not. The Plaid is running what it alway runs. Nothing new here. The only thing new is why the old guy with a passenger was so slow in the Sapphire.@@speedracerjeff
@@jeffreyengen3134 you still didn’t answer my question, other than the Hagerty staged video, show me a video where the Sapphire is racing a Plaid in the real world heads up? There is no other video than this one yet… And this guy who runs this channel has done a personal best of 9.1 in the 1/4 so far in his Plaid. In the real world the Sapphire can’t put the power down and is too heavy.
Hi Andrew, I saw that Brooks showed a Lucid Sapphire that run 8.94 in the 1/4. But it was racing it's twin, so I wonder if it was a factory cheater promo and can't be replicated? Glad you found one to race and even better that you came out on top! Hopefully you can both run again in better conditions. Lucid driver seemed a little bummed. I would be mad after spending 250k!
Before Commenters point out that THIS Plaid has had a bit of weight removed (back seats and some trim), THIS one is only 0.11-seconds faster than stock. It ran a best of 9.26 at FULL WEIGHT, and then 9.15 after the back seats came out. Coincidentally, on this cold night the Plaid ran a best of 9.26, exactly the same as before any weight was removed. (Because of course: Conditions Matter!) And we know (from our more than 1850 Tesla timeslips) that EVs run slower in the cold due to battery discharge, plus cold tires, cold surface, etc.
Hey Andrew! Nice job beating the Sapphire! Do you know when you’ll be able to race this car again? Looking forward to see you race it in good conditions!
We haven't scheduled any specific date yet. We are at the mercy of the weather this time of year. Could be as soon as this Thursday's TnT session with good weather though 👍
@@TeslaPlaidChannelI get it, winter is being rough I suppose. Also, do you happen to know what tires the Sapphire was using? Seems it couldn’t get its power down. But the Tesla did really good!
@@TeslaPlaidChannelOh and also one more thing. On lucid’s official video with the sapphire running 8.9 its settings were: Track mode, Endurance track, full traction control, and high regenerative braking. Do you perhaps think these settings could make Hunter’s Sapphire faster? 🤔Because if I recall, you said his sapphire was on swift right? I think with these settings he could probably run a faster time.
@@toxicgamer1119 I’ve never been inside a Sapphire, so all I know is what they both told me. They put it in the fastest mode (apparently “drag strip”), and traction was a problem. They tried disabling the traction control for one pass only (our 2nd race, their worst pass). We can all agree that a 9.33 pass with an incredible 152.3MPH trap speed is not going to happen in anything other than the fastest mode. In the Plaid, the 2nd fastest mode gives 120MPH traps, a huge difference. Unless the Sapphire had like 20 modes (it doesn’t), that first test pass was obviously the fastest mode. And the other 4 passes had similar trap speeds, only slightly diminished by traction (TC algorithm? Tires? Conditions? All 3?), and possible heat soak
@@TeslaPlaidChannelinteresting… so it may have been TC issues after all, or for the other reasons you mentioned. Hopefully they can do better whenever you two race again. But I’ll be rooting for you Andrew! You got this :)
Power-to-weight Ratios! Sapphire: 4.29 lbs/HP (5300/1234) THIS Plaid: 4.51 lbs/HP (4775 - 170 lbs removed; 4605/1020) The Sapphire STILL has a significantly better power to weight ratio!
Gotta say the win over the Lucid also had to do with the driver mod a bit. You've had much more time and experience in your Plaid, where as they probably haven't done much racing in the Lucid so are still learning the quirks. Well done!
Somewhere in between those two points. Yes, we are confident they will run faster in the future. Yet also worth noting that our Plaid made incredible runs right off the showroom floor. We made 20 dragstrip passes on the day we took delivery, and no special learning was needed to get fast times. And on this night, we patiently waited 3 hours while they made test passes to get comfortable. Just sayin’
Because auto insurance doesn’t cover dragstrip activity, owners are very reluctant to let anyone else race their car. If it’s wrecked, there’s NO recourse. No coverage. Bad enough if we do it to ourselves. But if someone else totals our car and no way to seek reimbursement? Too risky.
@@irtiza4262 Track condition was ridiculous. The Lucid Sapphire has already proven to be a Tesla Plaid killer by too many testers at this stage to show this video for the nonsense it truly is.
Curious with the gutted out the plaid if removing the rear seats triggers any error codes and if so do you run resistor packs to defeat and trick the Tesla system?
The NHRA rules changed in Feb 2022, but yes, we were getting hassled for those last 6 months of 2021 with this car. The new ‘Street Legal’ Rules for 2014 and later model years requires: “Unaltered OEM installed antilock brakes, OEM airbag functions, OEM stock frame\unibody construction, including OEM floors and firewall, as well as all other OEM safety-related systems must be functioning as per manufacturer’s specifications.” More at: www.nhra.com/nhra-street-legal
Amazing races. To be fair the Sapphire would likely win if the Plaid had full interior. But we're still talking about only a couple tenths and a few mph. Pretty hard to justify the extra $150k, imo.
No, not even close. The weight removal in this Plaid (~170 lbs) made a difference of 0.10 to 0.15 seconds, depending on conditions, as we tested thoroughly in 2022. The CLOSEST finish margin of these three races was OVER FOUR TENTHS.
@78katz Based on the numbers, we agree 👍 . A 200-lb passenger should only cost about 2 tenths, and the interior weight removal only helped 0.10 to 0.15, while the closest margin all night was 4 tenths.
We've removed the sound deadening material and rear trim from the car. The bare metal around the rear hatchback now makes that rattle. But it's not our daily driver (we have a mid-10-second Tesla for that), so it doesn't bother us. Drag racers seem to do anything for an extra 0.01 🤪 (Rear seats and trim made a 0.11 difference in our extensive testing, with more than 400 timeslips both before and after)
This is a comment for another video because this video is newer. Tell the guy with the copo to either raise the rear suspension slightly or to raise the wheelie bar slightly. From what it looked like in your other videos, he was riding the wheelie bar spinning tires.
👍We agree and those were his adjustments this week. He had a good test launch on this same Thursday as the Lucid races. No spin. But now the car seems to have a misfire under speed. Similar to what is shown in our 4th race (first race of that last video), but now it’s a bit worse.
UPDATE! This same Lucid Sapphire makes its best ET in our latest video ua-cam.com/video/Mkj1CS8CY6U/v-deo.htmlsi=bOlcIck79XiDF_AO&t=1209
Conditions matter. This is why we can’t just “race on paper”. Notice how *both* cars were so much slower in the second race due to declining track prep. Can this Sapphire run 9.0s or 8.90s? Not under these conditions. Yet with similar width tires (all OEM on both cars) and similar battery states of charge, the Plaid was able to more reliably put the power down 👍
That was awesome bet that felt good to beat the 250k car that was supposed to beat everything
I bought one cause of your channel
I saw sapphire doing 8.8sec in quarter mile race.
Yeah Plaid is just way faster, puts the power down better, and the difference in weight is a factor too.
What did you take out to cut weight
You ran a 9.2 so he should've at least ran a 9.0. He wasn't even close to that. Even with perfect conditions, I dont think he could've done a 9.2. Something is up with that Sapphire or it's all hype. Great job as always. You're getting better with the pro tree 😃
You can buy a model s plaid, model x plaid for the wife, and model 3 performance for the weekend and still have money leftover for the price of the Lucid. Crazy to put that in perspective.
And you'll get a $7500 point of sale rebate on the model 3P!
What I did
Well u get what u pay for.

This is the only heads up real world race video between the two cars so far on the internet. And the Plaid gapped the Sapphire on 3 straight runs quite handily.
The actual production models of the Sapphire are slower than the prototype Sapphire from the Hagerty video.
Saphire Driver a little bit pissed…i would be too. 3x the Price of the Plaid. Go Tesla🎉
Bit weird to buy a car just to drag race it, thought EV where supposed to be green cars, but everyone is just racing them, who wudda thought
Because they have become the new toy to bring to the drag strip before the uber wealthy.

Both beautiful vehicles! 🤩 I never would have thought that EVs would become this size, power and capabilities 30 to 20 years ago when the EV1 and other EVs started to hit the road. Amazing machines.
We agree!👍
Crazy numbers by both cars😮
Drivers make a difference, great launch, congratulations, thought you had met your match, and you rose to the occasion and tree'd him each time for the win!
Indeed, the driver is an key part of the equation. Not just for the controls, but also for reading the track to find traction. We appreciate the kind words. 👍
Plaid with that driver is a killer
Both great EV’s ….. but the Plaid Tesla faster/ better tech/ better reliability / better safety / much better price Bang 4 the Buck
I'm not sure about it being any of those things considering Tesla as a company and its track record. However, I can definitely say that the Sapphire is slower in these videos and from the looks of it, I think that Lucid has some more work to do on the launch control technology.
Amazing, thank you for doing this!
Great reaction times
👍 Agree! More options are good for all of us!
Power-to-weight Ratios!
Sapphire: 4.29 lbs/HP (5300/1234)
THIS Plaid: 4.51 lbs/HP (4775 - 170 lbs removed; 4605/1020)
Why do the Lucid fans keep talking about the 170 pounds removed from the Plaid instead of the above?
Seems pretty disingenuous to us 🤔
The Sapphire STILL has a significantly better power to weight ratio!
Because that lucid air sapphire is a luxury ev, it’s heavy as a rock!!! 🪨
Sapphire is a 5400+ sedan.
Didn't the Hagerty channel race Sapphire with the S Plaid and the Tesla lost?? Did they rig that race???? I think so....
Seems like everyone but Tesla chooses the "bigger battery is better" route to power. Clearly that has limitations. Chevy might be the poster child for stupidly huge batteries, but it appears Lucid could not resist either.
👍 Indeed, that weight penalty has consequences. Seems like with current battery technology, the sweet spot for sedans is 85-105kWh
Lucid's bigger battery is also good for a lot more range, and it is actu as efficient as the Tesla, unlike pretty much every other EV out there. The extra battery isn't a bad choice in this case.
I knew Andrew would smoke that Lucid. Kid in the Lucid didn't sound happy. "That's fine" suckerup buttercup
👍Very interesting 🤔
And yep, these Pirellis have really impressed us!
Andrew is that good of a racer!!
He knows exactly what to do with his car!
Great job Andrew!!
Thanks Ted! 👍
Plaid reigns Supreme 🎉
No it doesnt .Go see Drag times the Saphire destroys the Plaid.
That’s not dew buddy, you went plaid!
We hope to run these races back in better conditions 👍
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I can always count on some good sportsmanship from your races, regardless of the outcome
He's not gutted lol start making up more stuff up. Gutted would be a whole lot more than 170lbs.
Interesting the Plaid just puts it's power down better, More power doesn't equal faster!
“But doesn’t the Plaid already have enough motor to run 1200HP? Isn’t it limited by software due to safety margins?” (Heat, warranty claims, etc)
Sometimes more power than tire means getting down the track slower. (Ask any Hellcat owner on stock tires.)
It’s not like Tesla is going to ship cars with drag radials.
@@kcw9313 We expect to run them again under different conditions, and who knows maybe they will take their back seats out?
The Lucid doesn't look "much faster" to me. Maybe in their sales brochures.
@@kcw9313”much faster”?!!!! 😂😂
Wow you are one hell of a dragster with the plaid. Hats off for great driving even in crappy conditions. Both cars are incredible. But I will always choose the Plaid. Best value for the money you can buy!

Yeah because tesla fan boys prepped lucid to lose. It’s already been shown sapphire beats plaid
@@ArtieStern09 😂
Congrats for destroying the Lucid, I am thinking seriously about the purchase of a new or used low mileage plaid. Have a question for you, When highway driving are there any restrictions with the computer taking over and reducing speed when significantly over the posted speed limits?
Thanks! As for the Plaid reducing speed automatically: Not at all, unless the driver has intentionally turned on one of the autopilot or FSD modes, which we very rarely ever use. (We've never paid for FSD, and would highly recommend renting it for a month to try out before buying it.)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Thank you for your response and appreciate your content.
I would have instantly returned my Plaid if that were the case. Just get one before 2026 where all cars are mandated to have a kill switch installed that the government controls.
Treed the sapphire! This is Exactly what I expected, with a gutted Plaid! Great results! YES!!!
@@ChosenMJ SO??? What are you trying to say? ZF1
Full gut is 400-500lbs = 8.7-8.8's. Chet gutted 700lbs by cutting out metal panels too.
How about the C8 buyers who paid $100k over sticker to get their cars early? And Demons too? Too many others to list. But that’s okay because the money went to those great guys we call “dealers”?
Lucid traps 156 on a good track. That was not a good track. Lesser hp will win almost every time on a less than stellar track prep. Plus different sizes wheels. Good for him but this doesn't prove that a Tesla is faster. It proves that the driver and that exact car was faster on that might.
I'm not a Lucid fan boy but I am a fan of fast cars and making sure folks are informed.
#truthbomb
sounds like ICE excuses. The excuses never stop. Plaid is just a better and faster car
I saw a couple Plaid prices touching the 50k range now. Ill probably finally get one later this year
Yup a poor mans quick car. One trick poney for average Joe's that have never experienced a quick car. Too bad ur lacking the head turning dope exterior, special feeling and expensive luxury interior, and a unique dope head turning rumbling engine underneath u.
nice, Thanks for the heads up
8.9s car can’t even do a consistent 9.2?
I’m fully convinced now that it’s all about the driver
I don't believe that I could have gotten that Sapphire down the track any faster (ET) under these conditions. With some time and tires, perhaps. But since the RT doesn't affect the ET anyway, my minor advantage on RT was inconsequential.
That sapphire owner is a legit mature racer with multiple modded fast cars. He's not the problem
Honestly I like the look of the Sapphire waaaay better

@@TeslaPlaidChannel lol
Andrew, they should let you drive the Lucid to see if results improve.
The Tesla is gutted down 170lbs. This wasnt a fair race LOL! Still two bad ass EVs.....
Software + Engineering for the win.
Indeed, folks seem to focus so much on the HW and overlook the critical importance of the SW 👍
Great races. Would it make a difference if you had the track package?
Track Pack is essential for road course racing. But for drag racing, it’s a bit slower.
Was waiting for drag times, there you go.
Yep, we raced the exact same car 3 months earlier. And we did it on a regular track on a regular night. (Not pre-arranged with a private track rental that has unrealistic levels of prep.)
@@TeslaPlaidChannel good point regular conditions. Like road conditions sometimes unpredictable.

I want a Saphhire so much. And when I get one, I want it to become a wagon. It's been done to Model S by multiple designers, so why not? Especially excited for the reportedly amazing handling.
nice, What color do you want one?

The S Plaid is insanely fast for a stock sedan

Too risky.

Amazing races. To be fair the Sapphire would likely win if the Plaid had full interior. But we're still talking about only a couple tenths and a few mph. Pretty hard to justify the extra $150k, imo.
The lucid is actually a luxury car, the interior and build are on another level
No, not even close. The weight removal in this Plaid (~170 lbs) made a difference of 0.10 to 0.15 seconds, depending on conditions, as we tested thoroughly in 2022. The CLOSEST finish margin of these three races was OVER FOUR TENTHS.
"Luxury" If you look at the up-close non-biased build quality issues, you'll see it's MUCH worse than Tesla. @@MrTmansmooth
Nah, Tesla would have still smoked the Lucid that night with full interior plus a passenger.
@78katz Based on the numbers, we agree 👍 . A 200-lb passenger should only cost about 2 tenths, and the interior weight removal only helped 0.10 to 0.15, while the closest margin all night was 4 tenths.
So during the race w the Lucid, you can hear some definitive metal rattling in your car. What is it?
We've removed the sound deadening material and rear trim from the car. The bare metal around the rear hatchback now makes that rattle. But it's not our daily driver (we have a mid-10-second Tesla for that), so it doesn't bother us. Drag racers seem to do anything for an extra 0.01 🤪

👍We agree and those were his adjustments this week. He had a good test launch on this same Thursday as the Lucid races. No spin. But now the car seems to have a misfire under speed. Similar to what is shown in our 4th race (first race of that last video), but now it’s a bit worse.
For the price of that lucid you can buy two plaids and a model 3…. 😅
