This is THE wine guy. Ir ur on youtube asking wine questions, it's not gonna be above his head. Really unpretentious and affable delivery. Every gentleman should at least be able to say something intelligent about wine, but not pretend to know just a little more than whoever is talking. I'm not even sold on there's not some tribal-clique thing that determines wether you are a master sommelier more than your skills.
Wow thank you so so so much. I do think wine should not be pretentious… It should be enjoyed and people don’t have to know a lot about wine to enjoy it. I do taste with plent of Master of Wines and Master Sommeliers and have to say I am VERY impressed with some of them.
@@drmatthewhorkey I have no doubt! It seems that a functional palette and the knowledge and experience they have should be enough. They've gotten a kinda cultish non-scientific aftertaste in the public psyche atm, and it undermines a lifetime of dedication and real expertise.
I've always thought some of the best value in France comes from Cote du Rhone. Even the basic Cote du Rhone bottles you find at the local store punch above their weight most of the time. Thanks for the video!
I also treated myself to tasting all three G-S-M varieties separatley. I haven't found the right time to open my bottle of GSM yet, but i expect it to be awesome, since i really liked all of its three constituents. Well, you conviced me, i'll finally open it tonight.
Great video! I’m a big fan of Talas Creek. I have wines of theirs from every vintage beginning with 2006. Late last year I opened a Esprit de Talas from 2010 and called it my wine of the year. Some of their whites also age beautifully. To me they’re not your typical Paso Robles producer. There are many other Paso GSMs that are super ripe and exceed 15.5 percent ABV.
I especially like the GSM’s out of Santa Barbara and Paso. Really pioneering new blends, barrel wood experimentation (Acacia) and long barrel aging - 24 or more months. I’m looking for some No Girls Grenache from Walla Walla and can’t wait to try it.
Oh long time big fan of Rhone GSM blends ! Chateauneuf, but also Gigondas and Vacqueyras... and you can find unbeatable value for money also with this blend accross Languedoc !
I keep hearing so many good things about Qupe. Yet I none of the distributors seem to distribute it. Hoping this is something I can talk one of them to bring in. I carry one Tablas Creek, the only one I was able to get my hands on. The Patelin de Tablas. One distributor has the rights but no inventory. Not sure if they have the rights and just don't bring it is. Or if maybe production is limited and there isn't enough to go around. It feels my state is low on the pecking order.
@@drmatthewhorkey Thank you for helping bring them to my attention. I've already reached out to a distributor to see if I can talk them into checking them out. And I'll just have to see how it goes from there.

Nonetheless I really appreciate the comment, I pinned it to the top of the section

I love GSM style wines from Paso Robles. I think their blends are outstanding.
Agreed

ohhh nice, you've been buying for a while. That is great to hear. totally right about Paso producers climbing in ABV too
Wow, wonderful vid. The best values for me are always Languedoc GSM
Thank you! There are other values to be had, they will be coming up soon.

Yes I mentioned the Languedoc too. Since I know you love them…
Ch9duP is the daddy, imho. The '12s are drinking beautifully right now. I also enjoy Priorat.
Two of the mac daddy regions

That Tablas is yummy!!
Yepperss
BTW, did you consider tasting Musar? I realise that cinsault is one of the grapes but it might have been an interesting comparison.
I love Musar but it has a lot of Cabernet in it, so not perfect for this video.
@@drmatthewhorkey good point.
priorat is makes some amazing wine and they are quite cheap, very good values there especially the carinyena blends.
They can also be pretty pricey but I agree, delicious wines
Penfold's Bin 138 GSM. 😀
It's a nice wine indeed
