In some parts of the world this is more often heard played on a violin, but I'm impressed by how you pulled it off on a double bass!
Your whole performance is remarkable, playing 'cello music on the bass. You are the complete package !
Hello! As a fellow female upright player I must say that you are very inspirational! I am studying music right now and I appreciate watching your videos!!
As a male upright bassist I also find your playing inspirational. Such a beautiful reduction of the Bach
Best bass playing I've ever encountered. Well done and thank you Lauren!!
Damn, girl!
Your musical phrasing and sound are very nice, but foremost, the thing that jumps out, when I watch this vid (the hack that I am) your intonation is NAILS!
This is the most beautiful rendition I’ve ever heard. Thank you for sharing.
Holy crap! Finger strength and thumb position. I'm inspired to get to the gym :) This was really really good
Thanks so much Mike! :)
Very well-done. Great tone, bowing and intonation. Bravo.
Thanks Carl! :)
Wow, this was wonderful. I have rarely heard Bach come out so beautifully on any instrument (that it is a double bass aside). Thank you so much for sharing, Lauren!
Wow, what a sweet thing to say, Ephraim, thank you :)
Your articulation is AWESOME. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you so much! Very sweet of you to say :)
Beautiful tone and impeccable intonation! Thanks for sharing!
You really make the bass sing, very nice to listen to. thnx
And who says bassists can't play fast? Beautiful playing!
Wow! Such a beautiful and lovely selection. Perfect!
it's cool to feel how powerfull and loud the sound is
Wow... This was truly amazing! Bravo! Everything was so well connected!!
Thanks so much!
this is going to save my life when i audition for districts orchestra next year.
Great Lauren. Love Bach.
Wow, If that is totally from memory, Even if you had a music stand in front of you !, You hardly looked forward, Maybe two times. and I had to watch it twice (and I will be many times)to concentrate on the fingering . P.S the end sound quality here at the computer (HTTV) is surprisingly full and clear!, Mics,Instrument, room tone, sound processing, It's all working great . yours truly Richard Bishop
Good job ms laurent thanks for you is music for beatiful
I really enjoy listening. Thanks a lot!
This woman has a soul of an angel and hands of steel :-D
Listening to bach's cello suites in winter = how to become your own psychoanalyst.
I'm a young bass player and I want to be like you! I am trying hard everyday to become a conductor or a orchestra teacher, playing like you is my dream!
Awesome I'm studying this piece rn on double bass and I also play French bow
This is amazing!
This is awesome as hell! Looks so effortless!
👌beautiful!
Wow - very impressive!
BRAVO LAUREN 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏MASTER ⭐
Long time no see! Thanks for uploading, this was great to hear.
Sorprendente, normalmente no me gusta este estilo de ir rápido como carrera. Pero suena sumamente armonico y brillante esta vez, muchi trabajo.
Brilliant. Brava.
excellent performance!
That's perfect! loved it!
oh I am tempted to play this on my cello
Do it!
+Lauren Pierce but I'm kinda satisfied just hearing you play. I cannot endure the practice x_x
Ha! You just gotta learn to love being alone. Working a customer service job helps ;)
+Lauren Pierce aww you sounded like my teacher lol. okay I'll try :D
YOU ARE AMAZING
Aww you are sweet, thank you xx
this kicks ass
Brilliant!
AWESOME...
Awesome! Bravo!!!
you sound absolutly sublime! what ever you used to record this video keep doing it!!!
Thanks so much! xx
W O W. Enough said.
Tremendous!
Get it Lauren!
Thanks dude!
Flawless!
Thank you love!
This brings me back. I played these for competitions and conservatory entrance auditions. Lovely job. What recording equipment are you using? I assume you're capturing sound separately and editing with video as most cameras have terrible onboard microphones.
Isso que é um belo solo ....
Excelente Bravo
I really envy your neighbors. they can wake up to beautiful bass tunes everyday
Very good, but as a fellow bass player, I ask why so fast?
GREAT!!!
So, so, so, so good! "I say so four times cuz that's how many times in a row I watched it!!! Then I dragged my wife in and watched it again... : ))
Daww Johnny! Thank you :)
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👏
Are you playing the piece at the same pitch as the cello plays it? I see your playing rather high up the neck - so I think you are playing it at the pitch it was oringinally scored for, rather than transposing it down a sixth, to fit double bass compass - is that the case? Great playing btw - and lovely looking Bass too!
Lauren is playing this in the key of G and it was originally written for the cello in C. Most bassists play this version as it is crazy difficult in C and doesn't sound nearly as good on the bass.
Amazing! It's in A. I've heard it in different keys, I wonder how that came to be?
Usually the standard key on bass is G, however, she is using solo strings which allow your bass to tune a whole step higher, therefore making it sounds like it is in the key of A instead of G.
wow !!!!
That’s a very big cello
So inspiring!!!!
Aw thanks!
Hey Lauren, if you read this comment, can you tell me what brand and style of strings you use? Thanks!
¡Brava!
excellent music, pretty lady, lovely ambient.
uau very nice
Great!!!
Nice bass and playing! what bass is it you're playing??
@Lauren Pierce did you try a german bow or would you like to try it?
Wow.
Hi Lauren, excellent performance! I have a question, if you or someone else could answer for me. In thumb position, when I'm reaching for the high D, or any note after that, my left shoulder begins to hurt. I feel like I'm stretching the muscle too far. I know, it's a hard question to answer, but do you think I might have the endpin too low, which is making me stretch too far? I have been working on strengthening my shoulders/back but the pain still gets me sometimes, when I'm in thumb position for too long. Thanks for any feedback!
Greg Makamian Had the same problem over here. Try to notice any unnecessary tension or stiffness in your whole body, especially the neck and shoulder, while you're in thumb position. Try to rest your arm's weight on the instrument's body and fingerboard. It should like your fingers are dropping effortlessly on the strings rather than you use force to do it. Also check your position. Slight variations (endpin height, a different angle here or there) can have huge impact on how your muscular effort is "transmitted" to the instrument. Finally, see if you can get in some kind of body-awareness program, like the Alexander Technique, or Feldenkrais, or Franklin or meditative yoga. It helps a lot in all these issues and your overall wellbeing. :)
Hey Alex, thanks for the feedback! I recently starting working out, and doing long stretches and seems like it has helped me quite a bit. I'l look into these programs thanks! Are you Greek? If so, efxaristo polu file!
Greg Makamian parakalo! ellinas ki esu?
Alex Karagiorgis apo Kipro!
ahh... you're so beautiful and such a lovely player. brava from a cellist to a bassist :)
Aw thank you, love! xx
Im probably doing this piece for my NYSSMA in 8th grade... probably not this fast
The size of your cello looks like for me one acoustic bass, anyway the sound are beautiful. Congrats! =)
Haha thanks love! xx
Definitely an amazing performance, but i do have one question... What year is that bass from? It's odd that it has corners like a cello and violin and viola. Ive never seen one like it before
My bass was made in the 1850s - not sure of the exact year and the maker is unknown.
Violin corners are actually a specific style basses are made in! You'll also find the gamba shape (which has the lower shoulders), busetto corners (the bottom corners are rolled), and everything in between :)
😯 wow
I find it too fast, i always feel that Bach should be played more slowly, to feel and appreciate the depths of the musical tone (to my opinion, but it may be a question of taste). Maybe because i find the music of Bach very profound and contemplative, and i listened this piece in a slowler movement, so i have difficulty to appreciate the fastness, like when i listened fast version of the prelude. But it's a question of taste, and it's a very good playing.
Mr. Blaha really wants me to play this
I’m learning this on bass and I’m using the cello book but the key is definitely different, is there a bass version available or do I transpose??
There are several versions published for bassists in this key (G). I believe Lauren has her own edition available.
What notes is she trilling?
The L'mit The G and F# if I am not mistaken
Is this Rabbaths transcriptions?
No, it's my own edition :)
@@LaurenPierceBass Yup .. I like your thumb used below the G harmonic in mm8-9, and I also caught your "tuning harmonic-A" solution for the awkward A4-A3-G3 leaps in mm14-15. Both of these areas currently are broken down for me, but I will try your solutions tomorrow. Also, for the 2nd bourree, I am experimenting with doing it sul D-string. And lastly, the other takeaway from Lauren's video is how MUCH bow she uses, and closer towards the finger board she plays. This is how she's ringing every note so huge. When I open up my bow stroke it seems to get heavy and out of control when I want leggierro. Trying to stay light in the LH and big in the RH, but that's hard to do. Lauren, any suggestion on how to play big AND light at the same time?
Muito bom! Porém achei rápido demais! Rsrs
I am the kind of person who sees unique things in classical music, and here it's the story of Jesus and his life, death and resurrection. This is because of the strong contrast between the two Bourrees and the fact that there is zero transition between them.
Also, your bow moves up and down a lot and not just with your left hand as it should, maybe try focusing on where it is more and even experiment with where you can get the best tone/sound, I prefer much closer to the bridge, it gets rid of the extra fuzz from the bow sound and makes the sound more like a laser beam thats very clean with great tone, just my opinion and preference though
*watches in grade 4 double bass*
plz dont play music.
